Michelle Williams Opens Up About Heath Ledger’s Death

Actress tells ‘Nightline’ she still struggles to ‘find meaning’ in the death of her 5-year-old daughter’s father. By Gil Kaufman Michelle Williams Photo: MTV News Almost three years after Heath Ledger’s death from an accidental drug overdose, former girlfriend Michelle Williams is still trying to make sense of it. “I’ve found meanings around the circumstance, but the actual event itself still doesn’t … ” she told ABC’s “Nightline” about her search to come to terms with the death of the father of her 5-year-old daughter, Matilda. “I can’t find a meaning for it. I can find meanings in things and people and relationships that have sprung up and friendships that have strengthened. I can find a lot of meaning in that, but not in why.” It’s the first time the “Blue Valentine” star has spoken about Ledger’s passing. Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment on January 22, 2008, at age 28 from what police determined was an accidental overdose of a number of prescription medications. Williams said the year after Ledger’s death is kind of a blank for her. “In a strange way, I miss that year, because all those possibilities that existed then are gone,” Williams, 30, told the show about the 12 months after Ledger’s death. One of the things she turned to in an attempt to cope with her feelings was Joan Didion’s 2005 book “The Year of Magical Thinking,” the author’s account of the period after the death of her husband, John Gregory Dunne. Williams said the lauded, gripping exploration of grief brought her comfort as she sorted through her feelings. “It didn’t seem unlikely to me that he could walk through a door or could appear behind a bush,” Williams said. “It was a year of very magical thinking, and in some ways I’m sad to be moving further and further away from it. … I know I got kind of obsessed with that for a while, the before and after. A lot of things died. … There’s a line from a book that gave me so much comfort and it said, ‘When you’ve truly lost everything, then at least you can become rich in loss.’ ” Williams has been drawing rave reviews for her performance as one half of a disintegrating couple in “Blue Valentine,” which recently won a reprieve from the MPAA, which had originally given the movie a potentially box-office-killing NC-17 rating. Michelle Williams Proud To Show Her Daughter ‘Blue Valentine’ Someday

‘I feel like I could stand behind it,’ actress says of racy NC-17-rated film. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michelle Williams Photo: MTV News Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling have an NC-17-rated, rather-depressing love affair in their new, buzzy flick “Blue Valentine.” The film follows a married couple over the course of their relationship and boasts some graphic sex scenes to help weave the tale. So, is Williams nervous about her daughter, Matilda, checking out the film one day? “I’ve been thinking about that recently, the last couple days,” she told MTV News at a junket for the film. “I thought, ‘What would her reaction to that be?’ “I feel proud of this movie, and I feel like I could stand behind it when she grows up and says, ‘What were you doing for those two months in Pennsylvania?’ I feel like I could say, ‘This is what I made.’ ” The film, which opens on New Year’s Eve, may be too dark for a child to see, but much of Williams’ post-“Dawson’s Creek” work has been thought-provoking, something she said she’ll be proud to share with her daughter someday. “And I feel like that with most of my work now: I feel like I’m excited for the day when she’s old enough to see it, because my aim is to make her proud that the time I spent away from her wasn’t in vain,” she explained. While any mother/daughter viewings of “Blue Valentine” are yet to be determined, right now the pair is happy watching more family-friendly fare. “She kind of lives in a Mary Poppins world,” Williams said. ” ‘Singing in the Rain’ is our current.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Lost Revenue’ for Government in Tax Rate Deal Distresses NBC’s Williams and Todd

Brian Williams adopted a liberal framework as he opened Monday's NBC Nightly News by declaring “it’s a fair question to ask and for a while now Americans have been wondering how lawmakers in Washington could possibly extend tax breaks for wealthy Americans while allowing benefits for jobless Americans to be cut off.” Then, after Chuck Todd outlined the Obama-GOP compromise to maintain income taxes at their current rates for two years while extending unemployment benefits and implementing a temporary reduction in the payroll tax, Williams fretted the deal contradicts how “the fight has been over anything in government that isn't paid for,” yet, as Todd despaired in filling in Williams’ regret, “none of this is paid for. In terms of lost revenue for the government next year, it's $450 billion.” read more

Hayley Williams Says She’d ‘Love To See B.o.B Win’ At The Grammys

The Paramore frontwoman picked up a pair of Grammy noms, but she’s rooting for her ‘Airplanes’ collaborator. By James Montgomery, with reporting by James Lacsina Hayley Williams Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images On Wednesday night, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams picked up a pair of Grammy nominations — a Best Pop Collaboration nod for her work with B.o.B and Eminem on “Airplanes, Part II,” and a Best Pop Performance mention for her band’s song “The Only Exception.” So, when she spoke to MTV News literally minutes after learning about her noms, the singer was understandably excited. “Oh man, it feels so good!” Williams laughed. “And I’m really proud of everything that I get to be a part of, and I love being here to represent the guys. I wish they were here.” And while her two nominations are certainly nothing to sneeze at, they sort of pale in comparison to the 10 racked up by Eminem … or the five that B.o.B got. And since Williams guested on a song with both of those artists, we had to ask her who she’ll be cheering for come Grammy night. “Well, I would love to see B.o.B win everything he got nominated for … not only is he an amazing artist and performer, but he’s such a great dude,” she said. “And we’ve been lucky to tour together and I’ve just watched him explode. He’s a massive star now, and he’s still the same guy. So I love seeing my friends win, and I’m always going to be there rooting for him.” Of course, Williams may have an ulterior motive for throwing her support behind B.o.B — after all, he did promise MTV News that if he takes home an award, he will record a song with Paramore . “Oh yeah, well I think we just entered into a verbal contract about it right here,” Williams said, smiling. “We’ll definitely do it … I love music, I love working with other artists, as long as I feel it’s true to me as well. I wouldn’t have done ‘Airplanes’ if I listened to it and thought, ‘Uh, I don’t really care.’ But I heard it and I heard something really special, and I related to it.” And just what would a Paramore/B.o.B collabo sound like? “You’d be surprised,” Williams said. “Have you heard his new mixtape yet? Just listen to that and then tell me what you think it’s gonna sound like. It’s gonna be so sick.” The 53rd annual Grammy Awards will air Sunday, February 13, on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Brian Williams Relitigates Bush v Gore, Pushes Breyer to Elaborate on Irreparable Harm

Giving Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer an unusual evening newscast platform to plug a book, on Monday’s NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams brought viewers back to the Left’s ten-year-old grudge, cuing up Breyer to agree: “Do you think Bush v Gore hurt the credibility of the modern court?” Breyer replied with a simple “yes” and Williams suggested: “Irreparably?” “No,” Breyer said in rejecting Williams’ overwrought premise, so Williams pressed: “For how long?” Williams introduced the September 13 segment by marveling: We can’t remember a sitting justice on the U.S. Supreme Court ever stopping by our studios here, but it happened today. We spent some time with Justice Stephen Breyer, appointed by President Clinton and residing on the liberal side of the court. Justice Breyer is out with a new book today. It’s about how the court works, including mistakes the court has made over the years. I started out by asking Justice Breyer, given his love of the Supreme Court, if he’s concerned that just one percent of those Americans polled, in a recent survey, knew his name? That book: Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View . The second topic raised by Williams: WILLIAMS: Do you think Bush v Gore hurt the credibility of the modern court? BREYER: Yes. WILLIAMS: Irreparably? BREYER: No. WILLIAMS: For how long? BREYER: I don’t know. That’s up to historians. I thought that the decision — I was in dissent. I obviously thought the majority was wrong. But I’ve heard Harry Reid, I heard him say this, and I agree with it completely, he said the most remarkable thing about that case, Bush versus Gore, is something hardly anyone remarks. And that remarkable thing is even though more than half the public strongly disagreed with it, thought it was really wrong, they followed it. And the alternative, using guns, having revolutions in the street, is a worse alternative. WILLIAMS: To a new area, academic social elitism on the court. What would be your view of bringing in — Presidents appointing justices who went to a couple of state law schools?

Chris Brown Joins N.E.R.D. For Fashion’s Night Out Show

Singer pop-locks during the band’s outdoor NYC performance. By Mawuse Ziegbe Chris Brown and Pharrell Williams (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images New York’s Fashion’s Night Out celebrations Friday night promised a city-wide extravaganza of major style and star power. Judging by N.E.R.D.’s outdoor performance, the evening did not disappoint. A crowd of the band’s fans and fashion revelers swarmed the West Broadway flagship of the Billionaire Boys Club brand, which is owned by N.E.R.D. frontman Pharrell Williams. Flanked by a live band and a few amped-up dancers, the crew ripped through high-energy jams to a sea of New Yorkers wielding cameraphones. Sporting an army green Billionaire Boys Club jacket and green cap, Williams rocked their latest single “Party People,” as Brown, also sporting a green shirt and shorts with a military vibe, busted out some impromptu pop-locking. The ban also tore through their saucy debut single “Lapdance.” Singer and producer Ryan Leslie, and Japanese designer and Williams cohort Nigo also stopped by the event. Earlier this year in a sit-down with MTV News, Williams broke down the energy fans can expect at their live shows. “Get your stretches in — the EMTs are always on the side, because people pull muscles and stuff. And not bragging at all, I’m just telling you, dude — fat, black, white, skinny, gay, straight, I don’t know how they treat you elsewhere at their shows, I don’t know how they treat you in streets, [but] I know how you feel when you’re going to leave that N.E.R.D show,” Williams said. “And trust me, when they ask you what it was like, and could you describe it, could you ever put it into words — you’re going to say, ‘Nothing.’ ” Did you go to any Fashion’s Night Out events?
