Jayson Williams Sentenced to Minimum of 18 Months in Prison

Jayson Williams is going to prison. The former NBA star was sentenced to five years in jail today for the 2002 crime of fatally shooting a hired limousine driver. He will be eligible for parole in 18 months. Last month, Williams pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the death of Costas Christofi on February 14, 2002. He was convicted on four counts of covering up the shooting in a 2004 trial. A clearly disturbed, dangerous person, Williams drove drunk – and into oncoming traffic – earlier this year. He averaged 13.6 rebounds per game as a member of the New Jersey Nets in 1997-98. In court today, State Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman went along with a plea agreement that spelled out the five-year prison sentence and the potential for Williams to be released as early as summer 2011. Choking away tears, Williams spoke out in court and apologized to Andrea Adams, Christofi’s sister. He said: “There’s not a day I wake up that I don’t feel sorry for what I did to Mr. Christofi and that I put you through this.” He’ll have a long time in prison to consider those actions and, hopefully, turn his life around.

Paramore’s ‘Exception’ Video Features Fans’ Valentines

Band solicited homemade cards for clip. By Kyle Anderson Paramore’s Hayley Williams in “The Only Exception” Photo: Warner Music Group Paramore have been steadily evolving since their breakout album Riot! dropped in 2007. On their latest album, Brand New Eyes, their sound grows in multiple directions. The disc even features a rarity for the band: a ballad, called “The Only Exception.” The group’s music videos have grown as well, from the basic performance piece that was “Ignorance” to the more elaborate effects-based “Brick by Boring Brick.” Their latest video — for “The Only Exception,” which premiered on their official Web site on Wednesday — sees the band exploring narrative in a way they never have before. The clip opens with singer Hayley Williams waking up on a couch next to a guy and writing a note that says “I’m sorry.” From there she walks to the next room and hugs a guy who, based on the lyrics, is probably meant to be her father. The video continues with Williams in her room staring into the mirror, singing about how love doesn’t exist. She then moves through a costume closet and into a restaurant set, where a rotating cast of guys pose as her date. In a cool transition, she moves into the next room, where there’s a wedding (everybody is wearing white, but Williams comes dressed in black). She flees the scene when the bride enters. During the chorus, the clip cuts to the coolest scene in the whole video: Williams sings the song’s chorus (“Darling, you are the only exception”) while lying down on a giant pile of homemade Valentine’s Day cards (as opposed to the official Paramore Valentines ). According to Williams’ Twitter , the cards were solicited by the band and sent in by fans. In the video’s final moments, Williams spots her dream guy in the crowd at a rock show (the same dude she woke up next to in the opening scene), fantasizes about them together and makes her way back through the various rooms to the original set. She returns to the couch where dream guy is still asleep. “The Only Exception” is Paramore’s most ambitious and mature video yet, matching its action to the advanced sentiment of the lyrics, which paint Williams as a cynic who doesn’t believe in love but is willing to make an exception for the right person. It’s another win for a band that just keeps coming up victorious. Related Artists Paramore

Lady Gaga and Matthew Williams: Rumored Couple!

Wild woman Lady Gaga has reportedly been dating a guy named Matthew Williams, according to reports. It’s the first we’ve heard of it, but he’s a lucky fella if so! After all, dating a hermaphrodite must be intense! Just kidding. Rumors began swirling about the pair as Gaga was seen recently in LA with Matthew Williams and a baby believed to be his son. He’s not the pop star’s, of course. “Matthew and Gaga have been dating for months,” an insider says. “They were together on and off for a year, but mixing work and love just became too difficult.” After some time apart, they’ve rekindled the flame, though. Matthew Williams’ girlfriend is an odd one. Matthew, nicknamed “Dada” by the singer, then dated and had a child with another girl, and Lady Gaga began dating that random entrepreneur named Speedy .

Something Doesn’t Add Up for the Women of the ‘New Math on Campus’ Story

Some of the women in the New York Times story about the gender ratio at UNC —and the horrible things the imbalance makes ladies do—say their quotes were taken out of context and the story has ruined their lives. Alex Williams ‘ story, “The New Math on Campus,” highlighted the shabby dating prospects at UNC, whose student body is nearly 60% female. In the story, women are portrayed as boy-crazy banshees who claw other women out of the way to get to the few eligible, attractive men on campus, who then don’t text them the next morning. But after the story was published, a couple of the of the women quoted in the story reached out to Gawker because they say that Williams took their quotes out of context to make the problem seem worse than it actually is. Emily Kennard, a 21-year-old junior, is quoted in the story saying that cheating is “a thing that girls let slide, because you have to. If you don’t let it slide, you don’t have a boyfriend.” I spoke to Kennard this morning, after she emailed Gawker with a letter—signed by two other people quoted in the story as well, Kelly Lynch and Austin Ivey—taking issue with the story. “[Williams] brought up cheating,” says Kennard. “I made it clear that first of all, I don’t have a boyfriend. Second of all, I clearly stated my strong opinions about how I don’t like cheating, and don’t tolerate it or condone it, but that I do know people who do cheat and stay together. I’m not saying the majority of people at UNC do it. I said I know people who have done it. I was not talking about myself. I was not saying I think you have to lie. I don’t think you should.” The irony, Kennard says, is that she was in a long-term relationship that ended because her boyfriend was cheating on her—and she dumped him. I emailed Williams earlier today to ask him for a response to his subjects’ complaints. He said he wanted to respond but had to run any statements by the Times communications department. When he — or they — send anything, I’ll add it here. Kennard and Lynch seemed most upset, however, at how the story has been received—both on and off campus. “People are telling me I’ve labeled my entire generation as slutty in seven words, that I’m an embarrassment to the school,” says Kennard. “I had to change my name on Facebook because people were harassing me from all over the country.” “Professors have approached me about it and said, you should watch what you say,” says Lynch. “The worst thing about it is I’m in the journalism school here, and I’m making the school look horrible—apparently it’s my fault because I’m a journalist and I should have known this was going to happen,” says Kennard. “My response is when I interview people and record people I wouldn’t do this.” Maybe UNC needs to add some Janet Malcolm to the syllabus .
