Obama Inaugural Address: What Did You Think?

President Barack Obama gave his inaugural address today, beginning his second White House term with an ambitious agenda and a call for national unity. On a cold morning in Washington, D.C., the 44th President asked this great nation to live up to its founding ideals and to bringing about needed change. Obama Inaugural Address 2013 Obama invoked the country’s history of hardship – be it from the deficit, rising health care costs, climate change and equal rights – and overcoming adversity. “We are made for this moment, and we will seize it – so long as we seize it together,” Obama said, after taking the oath and being sworn in for a second term . He urged citizens to meet “the obligation to shape the debates of our time – not only with the votes we cast, but with the voices we lift in defense of our enduring ideals.” Amid the pomp and ceremony, the event symbolized U.S. democracy with a peaceful extension of power based on 2012’s bitterly contested election. While focusing on broader themes of democracy and citizenship, Obama referred to some specific issues facing the country after his first four years in power: Economic disparity : Obama said Americans understand that “our country cannot succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it.” Spending : He rejects “that we must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future.” Climate change : Obama vowed to “respond to the threat … knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations.” Gun control : The President said “all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown” should be safe from harm. World peace : Americans “still believe that enduring security and peace do not require perpetual war” and that “engagement can more durably lift suspicion and fear.” Equality : Perhaps Obama’s loudest cheer came when he said we should not rest “until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts,” and “until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law.” Unlike Obama’s 2009 inauguration, he cast a more optimistic tone for the next four years as he laid out his vision for America in strokes both broad and specific. The ceremony featured Beyonce’s national anthem and Kelly Clarkson’s performance of “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” and will be followed by events throughout today. What did you think of the speech? And of the prospects for the next four years under Obama’s leadership in general? Comment (and vote) below! President Obama’s second term: How will it go?   Very well, we’re on the right track! Better than the last four years at least Better than the first term of Mitt Romney would have been Terrible, we’re doomed! View Poll »

Jennifer Lawrence Pulls Her Punches During ‘SNL’ Oscar Rivals Monologue

If you need an idea of how intensely competitive Oscar campaigning has become, look no further than Jennifer Lawrence’s opening monologue for Saturday Night Live . Given the ridiculous media tempest that arose from Lawrence’s First Wives Club  “I beat Meryl Streep ” reference at the Golden Globe Awards , I figured that the show’s writers were going to address the issue in Lawrence’s opening segment. And they did — in such a half-hearted way that it sounds like some negotiating went on to make sure that the Silver Linings Playbook star and Best Actress nominee didn’t say anything that would hurt her chances to bring home a statuette.  The monologue started out in promising fashion. The Tommy Lee Jones stuff was genuinely funny and Bill Hader’s Tommy Shuffle deserves to become a genuine dance move. And then, when Lawrence told her fellow nominees, “Ladies, I love you all, but you’re about to get served,” I thought, for a few seconds at least, that the Silver Linings Playbook actress was going to earn her comedy warrior stripes by playfully dissing her competition and sending up the whole Golden Globes controversy. It started out that way, at least. Here’s how Lawrence began: “Well, well, well, look who it is.  Jessica Chastain . More like Jessica Chas-ain’t winnin’ no Oscar on my watch!  In Zero Dark Thirty , you caught bin Laden. So what?  In Winter’s Bone , I caught a squirrel — and then I  ate it. Boom! Deal with that.” And then — boom! — Lawrence pulled her punchline, so to speak.  This is how she ended: “Also every time I see you act, I learn something new.” She did the same thing with each of the nominees, needling them gently in a way that only an idiot could misinterpret, and ending on a cringe-worthy note of praise.  That’s not comedy. That’s Oscar campaign politics making sure that any witless television viewers and bloggers tuning in won’t mistake Lawrence’s monologue for genuine trash-talking and start up a whole new controversy that could hurt her chances with Academy voters. Here’s the thing. After watching the clip below several times, I’m left with the impression that Lawrence, who has proven herself to be quite candid in interviews , wasn’t exactly committed to the flip-floppy nature of the monologue script.  The stilted and hurried way she delivers that that line of praise for Chastain off her cue card suggests she is deli something unfamiliar, or, perhaps even unsavory to her. Is that the subtle protest of an actress who doesn’t like the material she’s been given to read, but is too much of a pro to go rogue on an Oscar campaign on which many man hours and dollars have been spent? Judging from the comedic instincts Lawrence showed during the rest of her SNL performance, I say yes. What do you think? Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Evelyn Lozada on Kenyon Martin: F–k Him!

Evelyn Lozada has two words for NBA veteran Kenyon Martin following his criticism of her reality show Basketball Wives. Those two words, if you hadn’t guessed: F–k Him K-Mart blasted the VH1 hit recently, saying the show was “toxic” and a ” total misrepresentation ” of the lives of married NBA players. That didn’t sit well with Ev. It’s true … there are very few actual wives on the show. Baby Mamas would be more accurate. Still, the former Mrs. Chad Ochocinco bristled at Martin’s criticism, saying “I don’t think Kenyon knows what he’s talking about. As far as saying it’s toxic, fine.” Evelyn Lozada adds, “Don’t f**kin’ watch the show then. It’s as simple as that.” Hard to argue with her there. What fun would that be, though? Sure, we could all simply ignore Basketball Wives, Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta and all those other classic programs, but it’s more of a love-to-hate situation. You know, as opposed to just plain hating.

Dwight Howard Custody Battle: Royce Reed Wants NBA Star to Pay Legal Bills

Los Angeles Lakers star Dwight Howard and ex Royce Reed are still embroiled in a bitter custody battle about their son – one she feels he should pay for. Royce, who you may remember from VH1’s Basketball Wives, wants Howard to pick up her legal bills as he seeks to gain sole custody of their young son. According to TMZ, Howard earns $1.3 million per month and should pay her bills, otherwise the legal fight isn’t really a fight, as she can’t afford it. Her lawyer says she’s racked up a $44,113.50 bill and can expect her total case to cost $106,621.80 … a drop in the bucket for Dwight. Not for her. Royce Reed was fired by Basketball Wives this year, much to Howard’s delight; he went to great lengths to prevent her from speaking his name on the show. They’ve been battling over custody of their son for at least two and a half years, with no end in sight.
