Phillip Phillips’ ‘Idol’ Victory And The Cry Heard ‘Round The World

When his tears fell during Wednesday’s ‘American Idol’ finale, Phillips instantly became the most relatable champ in the show’s history. By James Montgomery Phillip Phillips Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic I think I’m finally coming around on Phillip Phillips. Yes, I’m aware that I’ve spent the past 19 weeks making fun of his grouting delivery (that’s “growl/shouting,” for the uninitiated), criticizing his every performance and referring to him as “Kris Allen 2.0,” but none of that comes into play here. Because what changed my opinion of Phillips had nothing to do with his singing — in fact, the moment of reconsideration actually occurred when he wasn’t singing. It happened when he was crying. See, when Phillips broke down in tears during his performance of “Home” on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” finale, it wasn’t just the show’s most touching moment in years, it was the most personal he’s gotten all season. It taught me more about him than any hometown-visit piece or expertly edited contestant-confessional vignette ever could. For the entire season, he’s been an enigma, a slightly scruffy oddball who never really seemed to be that interested in actually winning (or taking Tommy Hilfiger’s fashion advice ). Early on, he built a wall around himself, and he never let viewers get a glimpse at what lay inside — until he finally allowed himself to get lost in the moment of triumph , as the confetti fell and the audience cheered. That’s when the wall came down and the tears began to flow. And that’s when I realized that everything I knew about him was probably wrong. Because Phillips isn’t some aloof, obstinate singer/songwriter dude who’s been to a ton of DMB shows. He doesn’t possess the supreme ego required to believe that his words are poetry and his songs can save the world. He is just a regular kid from Leesburg, Georgia, one who says stuff like “Music’s fun, dude,” and one who was overcome with the emotions of the moment and the sheer magnitude of his “Idol” win, to the point where singing his coronation song became secondary and all he wanted to do was share his triumph with his family. And that’s exactly what he did, performance be damned. In other words, he acted exactly like you or I would, had we just won an internationally famous singing competition and suddenly become a star. In that instant, I realized that Phillips has never had a day of stage training in his entire life, that, unlike pretty much everyone else who auditions for “Idol,” he hadn’t been dreaming of this moment since he was a talent-competition tyke. He truly never believed he could win, because normal people never would. And so he started crying, real genuine tears, the kind that seize your body and make everything else an afterthought — the kind that professional entertainers rarely get, mostly because they prevent them from entertaining. I’ve never been able to fathom how a person could cry and sing at the same time, and yet, each year on “Idol” (and on stages around the world), I see trained talent do exactly that, shed crocodile tears while still nailing the chorus. It is oddly robotic, not to mention slightly off-putting. I’m glad Phillips didn’t try to do it, and now I know why. I’m not sure if his “Idol” victory is good for the show (probably not), or if he’ll be able to buck the recent trend and actually become a superstar (though “Home” is a nice start), but for one night, I wasn’t concerned with either of those things. Phillips’ emotional outpouring may very well have been the Cry Heard ‘Round the World, serving notice that he’s much more than the realest “American Idol” champ in history: He’s an actual human being. In that moment, he became instantly relatable, even to his staunchest of detractors (like me). And because of that, I’m willing to let my icy heart thaw just a little bit and wish him the best. And even though it goes against my every willfully difficult impulse I’ll close with this: All hail Phillip Phillips, the People’s King. Long may he reign. ‘Anchorman’ Legend Lives On With New Poster

Fans get a sneak peek at ‘Anchorman: The Legend Continues’ (or, at least, the guys’ feet) in first official poster. By Fallon Prinzivalli “Anchorman: The Legend Continues” poster Photo: Paramount The road to the highly anticipated “Anchorman 2” has been a long one . Since “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” arrived in 2004, there were reports from cast and crew confirming a sequel and announcing a script was in the process of being written. But the words were then taken back, leaving fans dizzy and disappointed believing they wouldn’t see the anchormen reunite. Finally, when all hope was lost, Ferrell made a surprise appearance on “Conan” as the legendary Ron Burgundy to announce that the sequel was greenlit. With the “Anchorman 2” teaser trailer playing before Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Dictator,” the Lebanese Cinema Movie Guide released the first official poster. It shows the Channel 4 news team’s feet standing on set in the studio, the bottom of their suits — including Ron’s signature burgundy number, presumably not bought at the toilet store — keeping it classy as always. The official title of the film appears at the bottom in big, bold print (“Anchorman: The Legend Continues”) with a release date of 2013. While the film is still in the very early stages of development, the first movie’s director and co-writer Adam McKay will reunite with Ferrell to pen the script and the principal cast is set to return, including Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. When MTV News spoke with McKay back in 2010, he told us he expected much of the cast to come along for the sequel. “We had an idea, and we contacted Steve and Paul and [David] Koechner and Christina [Applegate] and checked in with everyone, and they were all game for it,” McKay said. “It’s a tricky movie, because everyone went and did really well after it, so everyone’s prices went up and everyone’s time got a little more valuable. But at the same time, graciously, Steve and Paul and everyone agreed to cut their price to come and do it, which you don’t see very often in Hollywood — and cut their price substantially.” Thanks to the cast’s commitment, Ron and the rest of the anchormen are set to hit theaters in 2013. Until then, stay classy, moviegoers. Dracula 3D Is Terrible…Except for the Tits, Of Course [PIC, VIDEO]

Dario Argento would be screwed if he didn’t have a hot daughter. The Italian horror maestro used to be great, but his movies have been on a steep downward decline since the mid-’80s. Now their only saving grace is his exhibitionist daughter Asia Argento , who has no problem stripping down for Daddy Dearest’s movies (Exhibit A: 2007’s Mother of Tears ). Argento’s new movie Dracula 3D (rather inexplicably) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this week, and as expected, it’s terrible. Like sub-direct-to-video terrible. But look on the bright side: The reviews all note that Asia once again does her dad a solid by going naked, along with Italo-Spanish star Miriam Giovanelli. Miriam’s character is described as “mostly naked vampire Tanja” by Film School Rejects ‘ Simon Gallagher, who writes in his scathing review: “Argento doesn’t usually play by conventional or commercial filmmaking rules, e ven including nude scenes for his daughter (and almost every other female character to excess) in amongst the provocatively kitsch horror moments and downright ludicrous story elements.” In other words, hold out for the good parts on Mr. Skin…but if you’re feeling masochistic, you can see the trailer for Dracula 3D after the jump!

Bill Murray Crashes Wes Anderson Cannes Interview

And this writer couldn’t be happier to sit back and let the ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ duo share a moment. By Adam Murphy Bill Murray and Wes Anderson Photo: MTV News CANNES, France — Sitting across from “Moonrise Kingdom” filmmaker Wes Anderson, decked out in a corduroy suit on the beaches of the French Riviera during the Cannes Film Festival, I can’t help but ask about his relationship with his muse (and my personal hero), Bill Murray. Anderson feels around for the words to adequately characterize their connection, which has developed over the course of six films. “Bill is the kind of guy,” he begins, “There aren’t that many people you could turn to if there was a mob and say, ‘Please, guide them this way or that way.’ ” Just then, a voice off camera distracts Anderson. The voice remarks how great the “Moonrise Kingdom” premiere party was the previous night. “Yes it was, it was,” Anderson responds. “We were literally in the middle of me speculating about what you get out of this experience of working together.” At this point, I realize Bill Murray is standing just over my left shoulder. “I was going to go on,” Anderson says to Murray, “but then I thought maybe it’s better if you just say.” It occurs to me that this is actually happening: Bill Murray is crashing my interview with Wes Anderson. Looking more like he’s on vacation than promoting a film, Murray joins Anderson on camera. I take my cue to sit back and watch. “It’s really fun, and I do feel that I am sort of in the center, because I’ve been in [Anderson’s films] a long time,” Murray says. “And I welcome others to come in, and I try to inform them of the rules of the place and how they have to behave. And the great thing is that the kid [Anderson] keeps getting better and better. … I’m so proud of what he does now and how much fun he’s having doing it. Because that’s the reason I do it, ’cause I have fun doing it. And he’s really done an excellent job of instructing others how to have fun and make it a real adventure to play.” “Pretty good, pretty good!” Anderson says. “Yeah, for just waking up!” Murray replies. After this moment of sincere, shared admiration, Anderson asks, “Can I hug him on MTV News?” Who am I to stop them? I look back to the camera to make sure this is real. After their embrace, Anderson compliments the longhorn skull on the sleeve of Murray’s polo shirt. There’s some discussion of meeting on a boat later. I immediately get the impression that these two are as close as we all like to think they are. I imagine the two of them taking turns playing old 45s for each other by lantern light in a tent in the living room. And then he was gone. Anderson acknowledges that his moment with Murray ate up a bunch of my interview time, a point so ludicrous it actually proves what an earnest guy he is. Someone tells me I’ve still got a couple of minutes left with him. How do I possibly follow that? Happy Birthday: May 19, 1925 Malcolm Little Aka El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz Was Born, Take A Look At His Most Powerful Quotes

Happy Birthday to one of the greatest Black leaders this country has ever seen. A List Of Malcolm X’s Most Powerful Quotes There are few figures in the black freedom struggle as dynamic and complex as Malcolm X who would have celebrated his 86th birthday if he were still alive today. Dr. Manning Marable’s recently released book, Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, has helped spark new debate and renewed popular interest in this iconoclastic and central figure of the civil rights era. Before his life was taken by the bullets of assassins, some of whom may have never been brought to justice for their crimes, Malcolm X was on a breathtaking journey building new organizations and planting the seeds of a global Pan-African movement to help address the crisis faced by blacks in urban America. Dr. Marable’s new work methodically peels back the layers and helps shed light on the real Malcolm X, who, though imperfect and flawed as the rest of us, was steadily undergoing personal transformation and evolving politically. But just as powerful as his actions were his words which struck chords, ignited debates and roused audiences all over the globe. Cameron Diaz, Chace Crawford Know ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’

Stars share the strangest pregnancy facts they learned during filming. By Kara Warner Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford in “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” Photo: Melissa Moseley/ Lionsgate As if the film’s title weren’t explanation enough, “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” is all about what couples experience during pregnancy, based on the best-selling nonfiction book of the same name. Because the subject is a complex, loaded and almost universal one, when MTV News sat down with the castmembers from the film, we asked them to enlighten us with the most unique facts they learned about pregnancy during production. “I think the weirdest thing I’ve seen — I’ve actually seen it — is a woman getting on her hands and knees giving birth,” Matthew Morrison said. “It’s interesting, because you think about a woman [lying on her back] and pushing, but honestly, if you let gravity do the work, it makes it a little easier.” “The squat position, there is a purpose for it — not just to lift the butt and tone the quads,” added Diaz, who plays Morrison’s girlfriend and baby mama in the movie. “But to open the hips and pelvis and let gravity do the work. The only reason a woman is on her back in our culture is so the doctor can see what’s going on. I say get a platform, squat over it, let the doctor be underneath it.” “If you want the baby to come right now, eat spicy food,” Ben Falcone (“Bridesmaids”) said of one tip he’d heard mentioned that might speed up delivery. “Have sex,” said his onscreen wife, Elizabeth Banks. “Sprint,” Falcone joked. “Sprint uphill.” “A lot of running is encouraged,” Banks continued with a smile. “Slam doors. Get surprised. Surprise her, scare her.” Chace Crawford and Anna Kendrick provided the most to-the-point advice, but because their characters have to deal with an unplanned pregnancy, their words of wisdom were how not to get pregnant in the first place. “Wrap it up. That’s what we learned on this shoot,” Crawford said of practicing safe sex with the use of condoms. “Right?” he asked Kendrick, who collapsed into a brief fit of giggles. “Never mind.” “Sorry. You completely lost me,” Kendrick laughed, before regaining composure. “Yeah, wrap it up to avoid pregnancy. And stay away from Chace Crawford; he’s irresistible.” Check out everything we’ve got on “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Botched Booty Implant Leaves Woman Double Amputee!: April Brown Refuses To Snitch On Backroom DR. [Video]

April Brown Double Amputee After Backroom Butt Injections Gone Wrong This is not worth it: April Brown was once a cosmetologist, fashion designer, and working mother of two daughters. She’s now a multiple amputee. She says hospitalizations after unlicensed cosmetic procedures led to life-threatening infections. Professionals removed her limbs last year to save her life. “I got the butt implants five years ago,” said Brown. “For five years, I lived in pain. Excruciating pain.” April Brown won’t identify the unlicensed practitioner who injected her with silicone. She will only say it was somewhere near Western and Manchester. Brown tells us, her own lack of self-esteem issues are mostly to blame. “They call it butt injections,” she says. “These things are done at pumping parties. They call it medical grade silicone but a lot of it is industrial grade silicone.” Brown’s case recalls similar incidents in Florida. But Brown feels she’s a survivor, empowered by the words of loved ones who feared she would die. “We don’t validate each other,” she says. “We really don’t know how our friends feel about us, unless we have very expressive friends.” Brown envisions a new career as a motivational speaker. Meanwhile, loving daughters Courtney and Dayne are grateful she’ll be home for Mother’s Day. All this over cakes? Turn the page to peep the disturbing interview with the victim… who sticks by the code of the streets AND WONT SNITCH!
