LA Times: Liberal Embrace of ‘Waiting for Superman’ Proves Conservatives Are Intolerant

The internet is abuzz with praise for the new documentary that points out the many faults of public education,  Waiting for Superman . With positive reviews from both the  Huffington Post  on the Left as well as the  New York Post   on the Right, it makes one wonder, how could this be? It appears that this film has single-handedly done what  President Obama  could not do to save his own life: bring the Left and Right together on a single issue. It is refreshing that the film’s director, Davis Guggenheim (who directed  An Inconvenient Truth ), is able to put politics aside to see the destructive nature of teachers unions. Guggenheim put his own kids through private school but realizes that not everyone can afford such a luxury. Here, he sets out to tackle the real problems that have long plagued public school systems: teachers unions. Though, he is  careful to say that he isn’t bashing unions  in general. Guggenheim sees that not everything has to be a political football, which is why we should applaud him for taking a bipartisan approach. However, some feel that the response to the film shows the true, negative colors of conservatives. Liberal Patrick Goldstein comments in the  Los Angeles Times : If you’re a documentary filmmaker, you’re happy to get rave reviews from any source, since you need all the good PR you can get. But I find it revealing, when it comes to the liberal vs. conservative partisan divide, that whenever Michael Moore releases a new documentary promoting a liberal cause, conservatives are quick to bash him for being a left-wing propagandist. But when Guggenheim makes a film offering wholehearted support for a conservative cause, liberal critics have written just as many glowing reviews as conservative ones. (The film has a sky-high 93 fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes.) What does that tell you about who’s got the most open mind here? First of all, only looking at  Michael Moore  and Davis Guggenheim as leftists is a bit single minded (even though they are). Sure, they both have done their partisan films, but one is far worse than the other.  Big Hollywood ‘s editor-in-chief John Nolte has even gone as far as to  defend Moore  when he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors: Yes, Michael Moore is a liar, a shameless propagandist and an anti-American leftist of the highest order. But he’s also one helluva talented filmmaker and it would be wildly hypocritical for me to believe or argue that anyone should be blacklisted from AMPAS due to their political beliefs. And that’s the only reason I could possibly use to argue against this appointment. It doesn’t get any fairer than a conservative defending Moore because not doing so would support a blacklist mindset. Even still,  Moore  has dedicated his career to leftist causes.  Look at his films:  Bowling for Columbine  (a good film that ends up ruining itself with a weak plea for gun control),  Fahrenheit 9/11 (a horribly partisan and dishonest portrayal of Bush enabling conspiracy theorists), and  Sicko  (a disgusting defense of socialism). Everything Moore directs (and writes and says) is to further a far Left agenda. Therefore, he is so painfully predictable, which is why it is so easy for the Right to go after him. On the other hand, Guggenheim has directed the paranoid global warming holy film  An Inconvenient Truth  as well as a short for the 2008 Obama campaign. Yet Guggenheim differs from Moore in that he has also done a lot more work outside of political documentaries. If you look at his profile from imdb.com  you will see he has directed episodes of  Deadwood ,  Numbers ,  Alias,  and even the conservative loved  24 , a show Moore wouldn’t touch in fear of losing his leftist cred. Sure,  An Inconvenient Truth  is praised by leftists and hated by conservatives (generally speaking), but by creating a wide variety of content, Guggenheim gives an opportunity for both conservatives and liberals to appreciate his work. So it isn’t fair to assert that liberals are better than conservatives because critics on the Left show balls by embracing a leftist filmmaker who makes a conservative argument (when the Right won’t respect Moore). The day that Moore steps outside of his self-loathing, socialist-loving fog bubble is when conservatives can respect him. Anyone who is honest about their politics will find good and bad on both sides. Guggenheim has apparently done this with  Waiting for Superman . Until Moore decides to transform some of his propaganda films into useful documentaries, we will continue to wait, but I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath. Crossposted at Big Hollywood

Joe Jonas May Drop Solo Album Next Year

Jonas Brothers singer working on ‘a more dangerous sound’ for the project, E! News reports. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas Photo: George Napolitano/ FilmMagic Nick Jonas did his own thing with the Administration, and in 2011, Joe Jonas also plans to go it alone . It has been confirmed that the Jonas Brothers singer will release a solo album sometime next year, something he’s been hinting at for a while now. E! News reports that the 21-year-old is currently recording the album, and sources tell the website that he is going for “a more dangerous sound,” similar to Justin Timberlake. “Joe has been working with various writers and producers but there’s no confirmation on what it will be for,” a Jonas Brothers rep told MTV News. Joe hasn’t been secretive about his desire to pursue other projects. “I’ve been working on lots of music,” he told MTV News in August. “I’ve been working [with] lots of musicians having a great time. [I have] been writing with a lot of friends of mine and some artists here and there, and we’ll see what comes out it.” And his music has even gotten his brothers’ seal of approval. “I’ve heard it. It’s awesome,” Nick said, before Kevin chimed in, “It’s really good music.” Joe has been very busy in 2010 with his own projects, mostly in the acting department. Between an appearance on “Hot in Cleveland,” a November guest spot on “90210” and a mysterious acting project with Tom Hanks , Joe has been branching out from the JoBros. How does Joe feel about all the work? “Life is wonderful,” he tweeted last week. “Thank you all who impact my life. Family, friends, fans! Xo” What do you think about Joe Jonas going solo? Lindsay Lohan ‘Should Reach Out To Oprah,’ Fans Say

Fans give MTV News a variety of ways the troubled starlet can make a comeback. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan arrives at court Friday Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images Between the multiple jail and rehab stints, alcohol-monitoring devices and a dearth of high-profile onscreen roles, this year appears to have been especially trying for Lindsay Lohan . On Friday, the actress was sent to jail for the second time in three months (she was released the same day) after she admitted to failing a court-ordered drug test. Lohan will reportedly don a SCRAM bracelet for the second time this year and is due to head back to court on October 22. Her legal drama has all but eclipsed her film career and many wonder if Lohan can still attract fans with her work as ably as she can hog headlines with her antics. On Sunday (September 26), just days after her most recent jail stint, MTV News went to directly to the fans in New York’s Times Square to ask how they think Lohan can revive her career. “[She could make a comeback] if she actually would just learn from something and … take something seriously, and not act like … the world revolves around her and she has these special privileges that no one else has,” Lauren Suitors said. She pointed out that many are able to overcome bad decisions after they’ve hit rock bottom. “Other people have gone to jail and they come out and they’re just fine, but she just keeps making the same mistakes again.” “I really think that she probably needs to revamp herself and prove to everyone that she’s capable of being a good actress and cleaning up her life, ’cause, as of now, she’s kind of gone into a downward spiral,” Jenny Phillips observed. Phillips said Lohan should head back to rehab and put in the work when it comes to a comeback because she is ultimately a talented star. “She’s a legitimate actress when she’s not all drugged up and stuff.” Sarah Leigh said Lohan’s issues stem from her substance abuse problems , an observation the actress largely agrees with, and suggested a single step toward getting her act together: “Stop taking drugs!” Evoking the “All publicity is good publicity” philosophy, Mel Dummett said that Lohan’s high-profile high jinks will probably boost for enfeebled status as a box-office draw. “I think this is actually going to revive her career ’cause she’s been in the news,” she said. “Any celebrity site you go to she’s covering the whole thing.” Tramel Ulysses agrees that she should “keep doing what she do” and that, ultimately, everybody makes mistakes. “I don’t think she should be judged because everybody mess up, people do wrong things, people say they civilized but people also do bad things,” Ulysses noted. “Everybody have their bad days.” Sebastian Moore said Lohan should look to a higher power to guide her through the drama. “Just try to reach out to Oprah and let her solve everything,” Moore said. “That’s what I would do.” How do you think Lindsay Lohan can revive her career? Justin Bieber Gets ‘Kudos’ For His ‘CSI’ Cameo

Show’s exec producer sings the star’s praises over his appearance on the show, airing Thursday. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber on “CSI” Photo: CBS Justin Bieber might be one of a handful of pop stars to make a cameo on “CSI,” but he has certainly left his mark on the cast and the crew of the hit CBS crime drama. When Bieber hits the small screen Thursday night (September 23) for his performance as Jason McCann, he will certainly leave fans stunned by his acting chops, one of the show’s producers told MTV News. “I thought that he did a really good job. We only had Justin for a day, for 10 and a half hours, and he had a lot of work crammed into those 10 and a half hours,” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn said about the first of Bieber’s two appearances on the show. “And he had one super big scene, and the scene was an interrogation scene in the police department with [actor] George Eads, and George actually took Justin under his wing.” Why did the veteran “CSI” actor feel that Biebs was worthy of his mentorship? “George said that when he was just starting out, Tom Selleck took him under his wing, so I think he tried to return that kindness, and he really had some time to work the material,” she explained. “We built in some time, and I thought that scene was really good, and Justin had a couple of scenes where he didn’t have a lot of dialogue or no dialogue and then two pretty heavy scenes.” Noting that Bieber did a “really good job” with the heavier work, Mendelsohn added that Bieber has some acting chops. “It’s hard for any accomplished, mature actor to come on the set and fall right into character and do your work, so kudos to Justin,” she said. ABC’s Dan Harris Dismisses Tea Party, Hints: ‘Complacency’ Is the Big Risk for ‘Gleeful’ Democrats

ABC’s Dan Harris on Saturday offered some odd spin in the debate over the Tea Party. The weekend Good Morning America co-host argued that “complacency” was the big risk for Democrats “gleeful” over the anti-big government protesters. [MP3 audio here .] Harris announced, “But some Democrats, including some people in the White House, seem to be verging on gleeful when it comes to the rise of the Tea Party, because the logic seems to be, some of these people have said such extreme things in the past, that they’re gonna be easier to beat.” Talking to Democratic strategist Karen Finney, the journalist wondered, ” Is there complacency potentially setting in? ” According to a September 19  Rasmussen tracking poll, the Republicans have a ten point generic ballot lead over the Democrats. So, worrying about the “complacency” of “gleeful” Democrats is certainly an unusual analysis. However, this isn’t the first time Harris has tried to portray the Tea Party movement as bizarre and out of the mainstream. On the September 15, 2009  World News, Harris chided the protesters: “…Some prominent Obama supporters are now saying that it paints a picture of an opposition driven, in part, by a refusal to accept a black President.” A transcript of the September 18 segment, which aired at 8:04am, follows: DAN HARRIS: Let’s stay in Washington now and get some insight from two political pros. Republican Robert Traynham and Democrat Karen Finney. Good morning to both of you. ROBERT TRAYNHAM (REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST): Good morning. KAREN FINNEY (DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST): Good morning. HARRIS: Thanks for getting up early. We appreciate it. Let me start with you, Karen. Is Sarah Palin running? FINNEY: You know, I don’t think so, I think she enjoys being something of a political celebrity, obviously in the primary season, she’s been able to have an influence on the process. And, you know, she seems to enjoy being able to get paid and back candidates without having the accountability of any policy ideas. HARRIS: Robert, is she running? TRAYNHAM: I don’t know the answer to that. And truth be told, I don’t think she knows the answer. But she’s doing everything that she can to possibly can to at least position herself, that if she chooses to run, she has the staff and the resources in place to do so. HARRIS: Well staying with you for a second. If she does run, do you think she can win? TRAYNHAM: In the primaries, I think she could. I mean, look, if you take a look at it, there’s really three states that determine who the Republican nominee is gonna be. Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. When you take a look at the demographics of those states, Sarah Palin has a significant ground force. The real question becomes whether or not she can win in the general. And I’m not sure anyone knows the answer to that question or not. But look, she is a force to be reckoned with, there’s no question about it. HARRIS: Karen, is this a candidate that the Obama White House would like to face or would fear facing? FINNEY: You know, I think Democrats learned a long time ago when they were hoping Ronald Reagan would be the Republican nominee not to try to guess or foreshadow. But look, you know, again, I don’t think Sarah Palin’s seriously running. I think, again, what she’s doing here is trying to stake out a base in the party, which she clearly has. And be, you know, a political player. HARRIS: Robert, while Palin appeared in Iowa, we had this cattle call going on in D.C., which is gonna continue straight through the weekend at the Values Voters Summit. Is there anybody in the field, a large field of potential Republican presidential candidates that stands out to you? TRAYNHAM: Not really. I mean, the only person that pretty much is putting his big toe in the water right now, and arguably could have a chance at this, is Mitch Daniels, the Republican Governor of Iowa- of Indiana. He is someone that definitely strikes me as someone that is a deficit hawk. He is someone that clearly talks the talk of a lot of social conservatives. But truth be told, the field is wide open. We have about a dozen Republican candidates, everyone from Newt Gingrich, to Mitt Romney, possibly Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, Haley Barbour. The field is wide open, and they all recognize that Obama is very vulnerable right now. HARRIS: Karen, there’s so much energy on the right right now. But some Democrats, including some people in the White House, seem to be verging on gleeful when it comes to the rise of the Tea Party, because the logic seems to be, some of these people have said such extreme things in the past, that they’re gonna be easier to beat. Is there complacency potentially setting in? FINNEY: No, I hope not. And I hope we learned our lesson, frankly, from the Massachusetts Senate race. I mean, that was a big wake up call. And I think frankly even Lisa Murkowski’s race should be a big wake up call to anyone who’s an incumbent that you cannot take anything for granted. You’ve got to do the work and show up. That being said, I think what Democrats recognize is that while there’s been so much talk about the enthusiasm gap, what we’ve seen is really Republican enthusiasm folding in against itself. Not necessarily against Democrats, which suggests that during the general election, we don’t know how those Tea Party candidates are going to fair. If Democrats can really turn out the vote, things might turn out a little bit differently than everybody’s predicting. HARRIS: Well Robert, what’s your state of anxiety or lack thereof right now? With the Tea Party, obviously, it was a huge phenomenon during the primaries. The primaries are now over. We’re heading into the general election, are you worried that the Tea Party phenomenon could hurt the party going forward? TRAYNHAM: Well I’m not sure. This is a healthy conversation that the Republicans are having amongst themselves about the heart and soul of the party. You know, I agree with Karen that you should never take anything for granted. And you can look at Arlen Spector, you can look at all the primaries across the country, Bob Bennett in Utah. Obviously, Lisa Murkowski in Alaska. But I disagree with her. This is not really a conversation within the Republican Party, per say, or civil war. This is a- FINNEY: Robert- Robert- TRAYNHAM: Karen- Karen- this is a conversation that the American people are having because take a look at this. The Democrats should be very happy right now that the, the President Obama ended the Iraq war. That comprehensive health care reform has passed. That the Consumer Protection Agency has a new head, and by the way, they’re very, very unhappy right now with the Democratic Party, so the truth be told, there’s some real issues within the President’s party that he needs to address. DAN HARRIS: I’d love to see you two use each other’s names against each other the way you’ve done, but unfortunately, we’ve got to cut this off. I’m gonna do this, however, with Bianna going forward. Bianna.

Emma Stone Talks Justin Timberlake Breakup In ‘Friends With Benefits’

‘I gotta tell you, breaking up with Justin Timberlake is really fun,’ she jokes about upcoming comedy. By Kara Warner Justin Timberlake on the set of “Friends with Benefits” Photo: James Devaney/ WireImage Fresh off the buzz from their charming teen comedy “Easy A,” star Emma Stone and director Will Gluck are already waist-deep into an equally fun-sounding next project called “Friends With Benefits.” The film revolves around two recently dumped individuals, played by Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, who eventually help each other get over their “evil” exes, played by Stone and Andy Samberg. Amid idle chatter about how Stone needed an oxygen tank after filming her fake-sex scene in “Easy A,” she said filming her breakup scene with Timberlake was equally hilarious. “I gotta tell you, breaking up with Justin Timberlake is really fun,” she said. “It’s a feel-good time. He’s such a nice, funny guy. It was really fun. We had a good time.” We then asked Stone if she was privy to any of Timberlake’s rumored serenading on set. “There was some humming,” Stone recalled. “Maybe some scatting.” It seems as though JT saved his pipes for his “Benefits” director, as Gluck had a little bit more to say on the subject. “He sings everything,” Gluck said. “He sings when we’re waiting to shoot, he sings when he’s pointing out paparazzi, he always sings everything. The funny thing is, unlike other people humming, every time he sings, you’re like, ‘That’s Justin Timberlake! He’s singing a song about “the boom just hit me in the face”!’ and it could be a pop song if he does it right,” Gluck said, adding that he would have to persuade his crew to refocus on their work and not Timberlake’s vocal stylings. “He does like to sing, and he’s good at it,” Gluck said. “And even when he does a little dance [to go along with the song], he’s good at it.” Fingers crossed that Gluck will add a reel of Timberlake’s on-set singing to the “Friends With Benefits” DVD. Blake Lively Compares ‘The Town’ And ‘Green Lantern’

Actress relished the chance to play a ‘dark’ role in the drama and a fighter pilot in the superhero flick. By Kara Warner Blake Lively Photo: MTV News “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively has been expanding on her Upper East Side roots of late. She landed the coveted role of Carol Ferris opposite Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan in “The Green Lantern” and can be seen holding her own with Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner in this week’s “The Town.” When MTV News caught up with the leading lady recently, we asked her how the effects work and acting requirements differed between the two very different roles. “With all the special effects, you’re in a big soundstage with blue walls and the world you’re acting opposite will be created months after you’re finished shooting,” Lively said of her work on “Lantern.” “So to watch that will be a very different experience, because I don’t know half of what I’m going to see. It’s so exciting, seeing all the visual arts and all the amazing effects they’re creating and the main characters they’re creating. I cannot wait to see it, because that’s one of the most important elements in our story.” Regarding “The Town,” Lively said there’s really no comparison because there’s no CGI in the movie. “Everything you’re seeing, we were doing in the moment,” she explained. “You’re just playing off of each other, a lot of reacting and a lot of improv. It was a very different experience, but both [movies] I just treasure so much. To get to do a role like this that is so dark and so different and so broken and then to go be in a superhero movie opposite such amazing actors and an incredible director, and not just be the damsel in distress, be a fighter pilot, be his boss at the company, to play women with strengths are the characters I’m most attracted to.” But will moviegoers — specifically the always-knowledgeable fans of the “Lantern” source material — get to see any signs of Ferris’ eventual villainy in the film? “No, not yet,” Lively said. “Well, I mean, there are always winks and homages to certain things in the comics for the fans, but I don’t think you know yet how evil she turns.” Are you more excited for “The Town” or “Green Lantern”?
