Andrew Garfield Is The Actor We’re Most Thankful For In 2010

His Oscar-worthy turn in ‘The Social Network,’ ‘Spider-Man’ casting and overall humility have endeared the young actor to MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Andrew Garfield Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic He plastered an all-too-human face on the backstabby founding of Facebook in “The Social Network” and just might win an Oscar for his troubles. He healed our broken geeky hearts when he assumed the role of Peter Parker after the “Spider-Man” franchise collapsed unexpectedly in January. And let’s not forget his powerful performance as a cloned human desperate to prove he has in a soul in the underrated adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Booker Prize-winning novel “Never Let Me Go.” For all of these reasons — as well as for being such a damn nice fellow — Andrew Garfield is the man MTV News is most thankful for in 2010. Just don’t tell that to him. Humble as ever despite talk of awards-season love and the prospect of taking on one of pop culture’s most beloved superheroes, Garfield has trouble accepting the fact that he’s deserving of all the hype. A conversation with him veers through talk of insecurities, I-better-not-screw-this-up fears and the self-consciously naive hope that his life isn’t about to change forever. He is, in other words, an utterly charming guy, and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the screen in 2011. MTV : So every year, we look back at the film folks we’re truly thankful for, and this year, you’re the man we’re most thankful for. Congrats! Andrew Garfield : Wow, that’s stupid. That’s very, very silly. I guess if I make you feel better about yourselves, that makes sense. MTV : We’re very insecure. Garfield : No, I’m very insecure! I’m incredibly insecure. That’s crazy, but it’s very flattering. MTV : Do you have a speech prepared for the occasion? Garfield : Yes, I would like to, first and foremost, thank you for inflating my ego. I really only want to thank you. MTV : It’s been quite a year for you, with “Never Let Me Go” and then “Social Network” and then you obviously landed “Spider-Man.” Does 2010 feel like a landmark year for you? Garfield : I feel incredibly lucky that I’ve had the good fortune to work with people and on projects I care about. From “Never Let Me Go” to “I’m Here,” a short film I did with Spike Jonze, to the David Fincher thing, “The Social Network,” with all the casts and crews — I don’t take that lightly. It’s inspiring, and you feed off it. In that way, I’m incredibly happy. And moving on to the next job I’m going to be shooting, being given that responsibility, I see it as a real gift. It’s a character — I’m talking about the Spider-person — I’ve known for my whole life. He’s been a presence in my upbringing and a very symbolic figure and force of manhood and bravery and a moral compass. All of those things that have shaped me as a person, he’s been very much involved in. MTV : It seems like maybe you were fairly well known in the U.K., but until recently, not many people in the U.S. knew who you were. How has your day-to-day life changed, if at all? Garfield : It hasn’t changed yet. I say “yet” as if that will happen. Maybe naively, I think my life is going to stay the same in terms of anonymity. I feel it’s so important to have a normal life, to be able to walk down a city street and have a normal human experience in order to reflect that in the work. Otherwise, you can’t relate. It’s so funny how actors are perceived. It’s craziness. Even the way I got when I met Doc Brown the other day. What’s his name? MTV : Christopher Lloyd from “Back to the Future”? Garfield : Yeah, I met Christopher Lloyd. I lost my mind. I turned into a schoolgirl. I started screaming in his face. I went insane. But I guess because his performances had such a profound effect on me, it was like meeting a hero. I personally haven’t been on the receiving end of that, thankfully. MTV : Well, people aren’t probably walking around shouting at you, “Hey, Eduardo,” your character from “Social Network,” but you’ll probably be getting a lot of, “Hey, Peter Parker!” Garfield : Unless they let me play Peter Parker with a disguise so no one sees my face. I’ll play him with a beard and mustache. MTV : Maybe a little “Benjamin Button”-style CGI facial work … Garfield : Yeah, they could face-replace me, and then it’ll just be my body. People will recognize some other, better actor’s face. MTV : You should bring that up with Sony. Garfield : You think they’ll like it? MTV : Totally. … I mean, not a chance. Anyway, has there been a surreal moment from 2010 that kind of encapsulates what a crazy year it’s been for you? Garfield : I did have a strange moment when I was told I was going to play this role. I was like, “Oh, wow, this is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a kid.” There was a moment of total boyish excitement. It was this cosmic convergence where I was in the past, present and future all at once. In the future, I was thinking about my nephews that are going to have an uncle who’s Spider-Man, but then I thought that could be bad because kids can bully you for any reason, and it’s like, “Where’s your uncle now when I’m beating the sh– out of you?” I’ll have to go to their school a lot, but by that time I’ll be really old and fat and no one will believe I was Spider-Man. Then I was thinking about the past and when I was first shown a “Spider-Man” comic. It inspired me because I was one of those people who felt stronger on the inside than they looked on the outside. And then in the present moment, I was thinking this moment is something I’ll never forget. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. The Two-Party Oligarchy Vs. The People

Watching Democrats complain about Republicans and Republicans complain about Democrats is like watching two Neanderthals throw rocks at each other while a pack of lions surround them. Dear Independent Media, Stop Contributing to Our Demise, It’s Time to Evolve! Independent news sites are excellent sources for in-depth information on many vital political issues. Most of them work hard to get the facts right and provide much needed context to move our national debate forward. However, they have a fatal flaw. There is a rule of war that many Independent media outlets are failing to understand: “Do not fight the last war.” In The 33 Strategies of War, Robert Greene calls this “The Guerrilla-War-Of-The-Mind Strategy.” “What most often weighs you down and brings you misery is the past, in the form of unnecessary attachments, repetitions of tired formulas, and the memory of old victories and defeats. You must consciously wage war against the past and force yourself to react to the present moment. Be ruthless on yourself; do not repeat the same tired methods.” When Progressive news sites complain about Republicans, or Conservative sites complain about Democrats, I can’t help but think that they are insuring their own demise, and the rest of the country’s for that matter. By buying into the Democrat versus Republican charade they have become the most important cog in suppressing any organized resistance. Based on personal experience, I understand how difficult it is for Independent news organizations to obtain funding. Unfortunately, most of the more popular “Independent” news sites survive by getting grants and donations from foundations and political organizations that will only fund them if they engage in partisan politics. However, they need to ask themselves a serious question: Are you doing this work to just collect a paycheck, and thereby maintain the very status quo that you appear to be against, or are you doing this to actually change the dire situation we find ourselves in? Given your deep understanding of current political issues, I find it incredibly hard to believe that you don’t see how global corporate interests have completely bought off both political parties. How betrayed do you have to be before you realize that both parties are against you? Our country has been robbed. Our future prospects are bleak. Trillions of dollars have been looted from the economy and no one in our government is holding the thieves accountable – Obama is not, the Democrats are not and the Republicans are not. They are all pivotal accomplices in the continued rape of our country. So stop deluding yourself into believing that only the opposing party is to blame. Focusing on one party as the source of our problems is journalistically lazy and intellectually na

Dr. Dre Is ‘Constantly Working,’ Producer Alex Da Kid Says

‘Love the Way You Lie’ producer tells MTV News he met Dre through his sessions with Eminem. By James Dinh, with reporting by Tim Kash Alex Da Kid Photo: MTV News After years of working on his long-awaited album Detox, Dr. Dre is the epitome of a perfectionist. In addition to some rumored collaborations , the super-producer, who is set to drop the LP early next year, has been logging studio sessions with the industry’s newest hitmaker, Alex Da Kid. When MTV News caught up with the British producer at the American Music Awards on Sunday, he revealed that the duo were introduced through Eminem, who worked with Kid on the Rihanna-assisted “Love the Way You Lie.” When asked about Dre’s forthcoming project, the producer remained tight-lipped, joking, “I’m not allowed to say too much because I will get shot and killed. They have snipers on the rooftop as we speak.” Despite working with Em, Rihanna and other music staples, Kid admitted that the biggest challenge when working with the West Coast icon was overcoming his “fear of getting in the studio with such a perfectionist.” Once the duo met, Kid said his anxiety melted away. “He’s been working at this for 11 years, but once you get over that, he’s like the nicest guy ever. I can’t describe how nice he is,” he said, adding, “He just makes you feel comfortable and easy.” As a newcomer within the industry, the 27-year-old music mind said Dre’s secret to success boils down to his work ethic. “I think, basically, he works harder than everybody I know,” he said. “He’s constantly just working. I think that’s what it takes to be successful in anything, not just producing.” Detox may not be out until early next year, but fans have already gotten a taste of Dre’s Alex Da Kid-produced material, including “I Need a Doctor.” The track, which features Eminem, hit the Internet last Wednesday. The collabo coincidentally finds Slim Shady giving Dre a musical reality check about his perfectionist goals. Who else do you hope Dr. Dre will collaborate with on Detox ? Tell us in the comments! Taio Cruz Wants To Work With Kings Of Leon

Collabo king tells MTV News he was starstruck when Kylie Minogue recorded at his house for ‘Higher.’ By Gil Kaufman Taio Cruz Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic It’s already been a pretty spectacular year for Taio Cruz . He scored a breakthrough U.S. hit with “Break Your Heart” (featuring Ludacris), hooked up with Ke$ha for “Dirty Picture” and then set up shop near the top of the charts most of the summer into the fall with the unstoppable single “Dynamite.” Along the way, he’s recorded another upcoming single with Travie McCoy, “Higher” (which will feature Kylie Minogue in the U.K.), and he helped present an award alongside Nicki Minaj at Sunday night’s American Music Awards , where he came in with modest expectations for a win . Always thinking about his next move, Cruz is on the hunt for new collaborators, and on the AMA red carpet , he spilled some details on what he looks for in a musical match. “Someone who’s going to make an impact, something the fans are going to find a fun collaboration, something interesting,” he told MTV News. Despite his eclectic slate of collaborators, Cruz said he doesn’t feel like he needs to be a chameleon to shape himself to the singers he works with. “I think you just have to be nice,” he smiled. “People respond pretty well to nice. And musically it helps that I’m a producer and I can figure out ways of moving songs around.” Though he’s a veteran producer, Cruz admitted to getting a bit starstruck when Minogue came to his home studio to lay down some vocals. “I was just like, ‘Wow, Kylie Minogue is in my house.’ … It was very surreal.” Keen to keep his finger on the pulse, Cruz has also been hunkering down with Swedish House Mafia on some new tracks. “They’re so much fun,” he said of the crew. His ultimate dream musical match is one that might surprise you, though. “I would say I would have to call Kings of Leon,” he said of the arena-rocking Southern family band. “Because they’re incredible.” Who would you like to see Taio Cruz hook up with next? Chloe Moretz Is Thankful For ‘Kick-Ass,’ Hit-Girl Groupies And Brad Pitt

And we’re thankful for her, one of our favorite actors of 2010. By Josh Horowitz Chloe Moretz Photo: Mike Coppola/ FilmMagic At the beginning of this year, MTV News tagged Chloe Moretz , a little-known young actor whose largest role at that point was in “(500) Days of Summer,” as one of the actors in our “10 to Watch in 2010” series. She didn’t disappoint. The 13-year-old blew audiences away as the sword-wielding, bullet-taking badass Hit-Girl in “Kick-Ass.” She followed up that comic book adaptation with an intense and mature performance in “Let Me In,” in which she played a troubled vampire yearning for a human connection. It’s no surprise, then, that we’ve now named Moretz as one of the folks we’re most thankful for in 2010. MTV News recently sat down for a chat with the teen star, who talked about meeting overly enthusiastic fans, how her family has helped her career and one unforgettable encounter with Brad Pitt. MTV : You were one of our stars to watch in 2010, and now Thanksgiving time is rolling around very soon. Every year we select the actors we’re most thankful for, and you’re one of the actors we’re most thankful for in 2010. Chloe Moretz : Really? Wowers! Yayers! Yay-zies? MTV : Does it feel like it’s been a big year for you? Moretz : It’s been huge. “Kick-Ass” and then [“Let Me In”] — it’s been absolutely insane. MTV : What’s been the highlight? Moretz : “Kick-Ass,” how big it got. The sheer thought of how much work I put into it and it finally getting so huge. That was insane. I was flabbergasted. MTV : Were there any moments at red carpets or premieres where you thought, “Wow, this is crazy”? Moretz : A guy at the London premiere, he had a Hit-Girl costume on — a pink wig and everything. That struck home. That leaves a memory. He was chic. MTV : Have you run into some fans of yours, or fellow actors, who have come to you and said how impressed they are by your work? Moretz : Brad Pitt at the afterparty, he was like, “I really like the role of Hit-Girl.” And I was like, “What’d Angie think?” No, it was amazing. It was really cool to see someone who is so big and is such a phenomenal actor to recognize my work. MTV : Who or what are you most thankful for in 2010? Moretz : My family, of course. Without my family, where would I be? That my mom said yes when I was 6 begging her to let me semi-start the business. Where would I be without my brother Trevor? He’s my acting coach. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. Gay rights protesters demand Obama help end ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’

Thirteen gay rights activists handcuffed themselves to the White House fence Monday afternoon, calling for President Barack Obama to work harder for repeal of the “don't ask, don't tell” ban on gay service members serving openly. Former Army Lt. Dan Choi, the Iraq war veteran and West Point graduate who has become the face of the movement to remove the ban, led the midday protest on the opening day of the lame-duck session of Congress, to put pressure on Democrats and the president to jettison the law before January. Choi and others repeatedly shouted, “I am somebody! I deserve full equality!” as U.S. Park Police approached each protester with a huge pair of red shears. One by one, the police cut through the handcuffs that attached protesters' feet and wrists to the front gate of the White House. The protesters were bound with plastic ties and carried across the sidewalk to Pennsylvania Avenue where they were arrested and detained. U.S. Park Police officers on horses and U.S. Secret Service uniformed officers lined up on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House, creating a barricade for about 75 onlookers, many supportive of the protesters. Several taunted the president, calling for him to come out of the White House and display more courage supporting equal rights for gays. One man shouted, “President Obama is afraid to act.” http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/11/15/dadt.protesters/ added by: TomTucker

GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING: The History of Health Tyranny: Codex Alimentarius, part 1

http://globalpoliticalawakening.blogspot.com/2010/11/history-of-health-tyranny-c… Contrary to popular belief Codex Alimentarius is neither a law nor a policy. It is in fact a functioning body, a Commission, created by the Food and Agricultural Organization and the World Health Organization under the direction of the United Nations. The confusion in this regard is largely due to statements made by many critics referring to the “implementation” of Codex Alimentarius as if it were legislation waiting to come into effect. A more accurate phrase would be the “implementation of Codex Alimentarius guidelines,” as it would more adequately describe the situation. Codex is merely another tool in the chest of an elite group of individuals whose goal is to create a one world government in which they wield complete control. Power over the food supply is essential in order to achieve this. As will be discussed later, Codex Alimentarius will be “implemented” whenever guidelines are established and national governments begin to arrange their domestic laws in accordance with the standards set by the organization. The existence of Codex Alimentarius as a policy-making body has roots going back over a hundred years. The name itself, Codex Alimentarius, is Latin for “food code”[1] and directly descended from the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus, a set of standards and descriptions of a variety of foods in the Austria-Hungarian Empire between 1897 and 1911.[2] This set of standards was the brainchild of both the food industry and academia and was used by the courts in order to determine food identity in a legal fashion. Even as far back as 1897, nations were being pushed toward harmonization of national laws into an international set of standards that would reduce the “barriers to trade” created by differences in national laws.[3] As the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus gained steam in its localized area, the idea of having a single set of standards for all of Europe began to pick up steam as well. From 1954-1958, Austria successfully pursued the creation of the Codex Alimentarius Europaeus (the European Codex Alimentarius). Almost immediately the UN directed FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) sprang into action when the FAO Regional Conference for Europe expressed the desire for a global international set of standards for food. The FAO Regional Conference then sent a proposal up the chain of command to the FAO itself with the suggestion to create a joint FAO/WHO programme dealing with food standards. The very next year, the Codex Alimentarius Europeaus adopted a resolution that its work on food standards be taken over by the FAO. In 1961, it was decided by the WHO, Codex Alimentarius Europaeus, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the FAO Conference to create an international food standards programme known as the Codex Alimentarius.[4] In 1963, as a result of the resolutions passed by these organizations two years earlier, Codex Alimentarius was officially created.[5] Although created under the auspices of the FAO and the WHO, there is some controversy regarding individuals who may or may not have participated in the establishment of Codex. Many anti-Codex organizations have asserted that Nazi war criminals, Fritz Ter Meer[6] and Hermann Schmitz[7] in particular, were principal architects of the organization. Because many of these claims are made with only indirect evidence, or no evidence at all, one might be tempted to disregard them at first glance. However, as the allegations gain more and more adherents, Codex has attempted to refute them. In its Frequently Asked Questions section, Codex answers the question, “Is it true that Codex was created by a former war criminal to control the world food supply?”[8] It then goes on to answer the charges by stating: No. It is a false claim. You just need to type the words “Codex Alimentarius” in any search engine and you will find lots of these rumors about Codex. Usually the people spreading them will give no proof but will ask you to send donations or to sign petitions against Codex. Truthful information about Codex is found on the Internet – there is nothing to hide from our side – we are a public institution working in public for the public – we are happy if people want to know more about our work and ask questions. There is an official Codex Contact Point in each member country who will be pleased to answer your questions on Codex.[9] But, as one can see from the statement above, Codex’s response does very little to answer this question beyond simply disagreeing with it. While it is true that many individuals who make this claim provide little evidence for it, the presentation of the information does not necessarily negate its truthfulness. In fact, Codex offers its own website as a source for accurate information about the organization; yet, beyond the FAQ section, there is nothing to be found that is relevant to the “war criminal” allegations. Furthermore, the codexalimentarius.net website is virtually indecipherable, almost to the point of being completely useless. In the end, this response raises more questions than it answers. This is because Codex, if it wanted, could put these rumors to rest by simply posting a list of the individuals and organizations that funded or played an integral role in its creation. However, it does nothing of the sort. Beyond mentioning the FAO and the WHO, we are completely unaware of who or how many other individuals and organizations participated in the creation of Codex Alimentarius. Natalia Kills Hooks Up With Will.i.am For ‘Dark Pop’ Debut

‘We should dance through the feelings, sadness, revenge,’ British singer says of her musical philosophy. By Vaughn Schoonmaker, with reporting by Tim Kash Natalia Kills Photo: MTV News Self-described “dark pop” singer Natalia Kills is not going to let you get away with being shallow on the dance floor. “I don’t want people to just dance to dance music, and the lyrics are about dancing in a club and taking shots,” explained the 24-year-old Brit. Instead, she believes, “We should dance through a breakup. We should dance through the feelings, sadness, revenge.” When she moved to the United States to pursue her music career, Natalia met with producers including Akon and Justin Timberlake before finally teaming up with will.i.am and signing on to Interscope/ Cherrytree Records in 2008. “Will.i.am is crazy!” Kills gushed of the Black Eyed Peas frontman. “He is on a different level to most creative human beings. … When I was in the studio with Will, he showed me, really, that music is about bringing camaraderie and joy and unity between people.” Natalia is currently focused on creating a steady presence in the U.S. and has already been praised by the likes of Perez Hilton. After spending the summer as the opening act for Robyn and Kelis on tour, she says she’s started to develop a great fanbase. While she’ll remain on the road with Robyn through North America and Europe this fall, she’s preparing for the early 2011 release of her debut album, Perfectionist. And she’s already shot a music video for her first single, “Mirrors.” “I would say expect drama,” Natalia warns of her first clip. “Expect a lot of fun.” Related Artists Natalia Kills

Jay-Z’s ‘Decoded’: The Reviews Are In!

Hov ‘deserves the same level of respect as any of those great scribes,’ one reviewer writes, comparing the MC to iconic poets. By Gil Kaufman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News Jay-Z said he put together his book “Decoded” to give fans a chance to “really understand” his story and the origin of his rhymes. The book, which came out on Tuesday (November 16), is equal parts memoir and lyrical deconstruction as well as an argument for rap to be considered as a form of modern poetry. So, what’s the public reaction to “Decoded”? “Despite the career he has made out of rapping in the first person, Jay-Z is known for prizing privacy. His new book ‘Decoded’ may not erase that reputation — look elsewhere for gossip — but it is nonetheless Shawn Carter’s most honest airing of the experiences he drew on to create the mythic figure of Jay-Z,” Simon Vozick-Levinson writes in Entertainment Weekly. EW breaks the book down along three criteria, giving Jay props for portraying the “desperation that drove him to crime and the paranoia and shame that followed” in describing his time as a crack dealer and additional props for not lingering on his rise to the top. Instead, Jay offers interesting glimpses at the drug life that reveal a complex businessman and friend. “The memoir’s chief theme is Jay-Z’s obsession with words,” Vozick-Levinson writes. “Annotated lyric sheets unpack allusions that even the most attentive listeners might have missed. He situates his work in the English canon, comparing his chosen form to the sonnet and crediting favorite authors (”Shout-out to Alfred, Lord Tennyson”). After reading ‘Decoded,’ you won’t doubt for a second that he deserves the same level of respect as any of those great scribes. The Barnes & Noble review noted the irony of the title, given what it called the MC’s “decidedly plain spoken and confessional” lyrics compared to such knotty contemporaries as the Wu-Tang Clan. It also notes that while we know Jay the performer, aside from the well-trod arc of his life as project kid to hustler and then world-renowned hip-hip icon, he is generally a private man. “Though he’s released a staggering 11 albums in 14 years, the man behind the business still remains a mystery — often seen, but rarely heard,” writes Adam Bradley, the author of “Book of Rhymes: The Poetics of Hip-Hop.” “That is what makes ‘Decoded’ such an unexpected and welcome gift. At over 300 pages, it is a multimedia, multi-genre extravaganza: part memoir, part coffee table book, part annotated compendium of lyrics, part polemic in the defense of hip hop’s poesy.” Bradley commends Jay and co-author dream hampton for interspersing “personal anecdotes, rhetorical broadsides and deep reflections with rich images and typography. From Andy Warhol’s striking ‘Rorschach’ on the book’s front cover to the interior art, which ranges from Michelangelo’s ‘Piet
