Acid Attack Was Faked: Bethany Storro Admits to Police She Maimed Herself

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/09/16/washington.acid.attack/ CNN) — A 28-year-old woman who said an unknown assailant threw a cup of caustic liquid in her face has admitted her injuries were self-inflicted, Vancouver, Washington, police said Thursday. Bethany Storro was being interviewed by detectives, and whether she will be charged will be up to prosecutors, police said. “She is extremely upset,” said police Commander Marla Schuman. “She is very remorseful. In many ways it got bigger than she expected.” Police would not speculate on Storro's motives, only saying the August 30 incident did not occur as she described and that there were discrepancies in her account, including wearing sunglasses in the evening. They also had questions about the liquid's splash patterns on Storro's face. Officers acquired a search warrant and conducted a search Thursday morning. They removed several undisclosed items, but said they did not find a substance that might have caused her injuries. Video: Police: Acid attack was self-inflicted RELATED TOPICS Criminal Assault Crime Vancouver (Washington) Vancouver had searched for an assailant, described as an African-American woman with an athletic build and slicked-back hair pulled into a pony tail. Storro was released from an Oregon hospital on September 5 after undergoing surgery for her injuries after the alleged attack. Police spent hundreds of hours on the case and the community came together to offer donations for Storro's treatment. “It has had an impact on our community,” said Police Chief Clifford Cook. “It has brought negative attention on our community that is undeserved.” Storro's family was also being interviewed, police said. They described her as being in a fragile mental state. Storro credited a new pair of sunglasses — which she said she bought just 20 minutes before the attack — with saving her eyesight. “God is watching over me,” Storro, of Vancouver, told CNN affiliate KATU in Portland, Oregon, at the time. “I believe in him. That his hands are on me and I can't live the rest of my life like that — in fear. I can't let what she did to me wreck my life.” Storro told KATU that she had stopped at a Vancouver Starbucks about 7:15 p.m., just after she had gone back to buy a pair of sunglasses that she had seen earlier. The woman walked up to her and said, “Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?” When Storro declined, the woman threw the contents of the cup in her face and ran off, Storro claimed at the time added by: keithponder

Video game fans rally after tragic death

September 15 2:47 P.M. Brian Wood spent his life thrilling millions of faceless gamers, but his last moment was spent saving the lives of those he loved most. Wood, a 33 year-old lead designer at popular game developer Relic Entertainment, was on his way back to his Washington home when his wagon was struck by an oncoming Chevy Blazer being driven by a 21 year-old woman believed to be driving under the influence. With his pregnant wife Erin in the passenger seat, Wood swerved his car to put himself directly in the path of the oncoming SUV — a decision that ultimately cost him his life, but protected his wife and unborn child from harm. Two other passengers riding in the backseat of the Blazer were also killed. “All the policeman say that if we had hit the car head-on all of us would be dead,” Erin Wood told The Province. “At the very last second (Brian) braked really hard and turned right so that he would be put in the path of the SUV and not me and the baby, and that is the only thing that saved us both.” “He was always sacrificing himself for me and the baby,” she added. But while Wood's impossibly brave act left a permanent void in the life of Erin Wood, the same people who Brian strived to please with his work have returned the favor with a striking show of support for his bereaved widow. A memorial trust was set up within days of the accident. Countless game developers, journalists and fans posted links on Twitter and Facebook, leading to literally thousands of supportive comments, messages and financial donations, prompting Wood to send an open letter to the gaming community to popular game blog Kotaku. “Brian always told me about how close-knit and wonderful the video game community was, but I had no idea until this tragedy just how special a group it really is,” she writes. “From all the articles and comments, to the emails and donations, I am simply stunned and so touched by the love, kindness, and generosity shown to me and my family.” At the time of his death, Brian Wood was working on Company of Heroes Online, a free-to-play version of Relic’s award-winning strategy game. It's currently in open beta-test. To help Erin, please visit the Brian Wood Memorial Trust . added by: Almibry

‘American Idol’ Allows Online Auditions For First Time

A select few ‘Idol’ hopefuls will advance to L.A. callbacks. By Kara Warner Photo: FOX It’s hard to believe that a new season of “American Idol” is just around the corner, but it’s even harder to believe that the reality-TV ratings juggernaut has been around for a decade. To celebrate the 10-year milestone, it was announced Wednesday (September 15) that, for the first time, “Idol” hopefuls can submit online audition videos to MySpace . From now through October 6, aspiring Kelly Clarksons and Chris Daughtrys between the ages of 15 and 28 (as of July 15, 2010) have the opportunity to submit an audition video. According to a news release from the network, entrants must demonstrate their “stellar singing ability by performing one of the songs from the approved list a cappella. Videos are limited to 40 seconds in length, and are limited to one submission per person. Auditions will be judged in a similar fashion to the live audition cities and a select number will advance to the next round of callbacks in Los Angeles.” The song list includes Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Keith Urban’s “Kiss a Girl” and Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana,” to name a few. Fans will be able to share the videos across various networks and watch highlights in a special gallery on the MySpace page. This “American Idol” offseason has been a hectic one. Aside from Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi being out as judges, the show also dropped its age limit to 15 to make sure it doesn’t miss out on a potential Justin Bieber. Now if they would just announce who will be on the judges’ panel next season … Will you submit on an online audition video? Let us know in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Kanye West Pens XXL Article — About Himself

‘At the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV,’ an apologetic Yeezy writes about 2009 VMA outburst. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West on the cover of the October XXL Photo: Harris Publications Kanye West says he often feels slighted by the media, claiming that journalists either twist his words or miss the humor in his responses. Well, the outspoken rapper will have only himself to blame if he doesn’t enjoy the October issue of XXL. ‘Ye graces the cover of the magazine and penned the story himself, a first-person narrative in which he opens up about the aftermath of his 2009 MTV Video Music Awards stunt where he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. “In a way, I had thrown a Molotov cocktail at my own career, and it gave me an opportunity, for the first time, to go away and find out who I was,” he wrote. “Because I felt very alone. “I stress that the incident wasn’t about Taylor personally,” he explained. “And it definitely wasn’t about race. Where I messed up is, at the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV.” After the incident, ‘Ye was vilified by the public and became a punching bag for comics, critics and even President Barack Obama. He also lost onetime fans who had had enough of the superstar’s stage-crashing antics. West said an apology — to everyone — was necessary. “The relationship with the public and with your fans is like the relationship with your girlfriend,” he wrote. “How could I not, at a certain point, be like, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been at the awards show. I’m sorry’? Not that I don’t deserve to get beat up or change who I am inside, to make sure that that doesn’t happen again. “I knew I wasn’t in a great spot publicly after the incident, but I would just block it out and work as hard as possible and let my work be my saving grace,” he added. In addition to penning a story about himself, West also curates the magazine’s special 40-page section, temporarily taking the title of “creative director.” The issue arrives on newsstands September 28 and will also features stories on Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa and a package on producers-turned-rappers a la West. Now that he’s survived the 2010 VMAs without incident, what should Kanye do next? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Kanye West

‘The Hunger Games’ May Have Its Director

‘Seabiscuit’ director Gary Ross is in talks to helm adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian young adult novel. By Amy Wilkinson Gary Ross Photo: Todd Williamson/ WireImage The director reaping is nearing an end: Gary Ross is in talks to direct the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ critically acclaimed young adult novel “The Hunger Games.” Lionsgate, the studio co-producing the film along with Color Force’s Nina Jacobson, is in early talks with the director, Deadline reports. Over the past few weeks, the studio has been meeting with a who’s who of directors including “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” helmer David Slade, Sam Mendes, Andrew Adamson, Rupert Sanders and Susanna White. Ross is an Oscar-nominated director and writer, known for his work on “Seabiscuit,” “Pleasantville” and the comedy “Dave.” Deadline emphasized that Ross has not been locked in, but that he is the studio’s choice, pending negotiations. “The Hunger Games” is the first installment of a trilogy focusing on 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen. Katniss lives in a dystopian version of the U.S. called Panem, which is divided into 12 districts and ruled by a capricious Capitol. To remind the districts’ citizens of their failed great rebellion, every year eavh district must send two of its children into a televised glorified death match known as the Hunger Games, where the last kid standing wins. Katniss, who has long been feeding her family by hunting with bow and arrow on the sly, volunteers to take her young sister’s place in the games. While she fights for survival, she also finds herself in a torturous love triangle and an underground movement to overthrow the government. Upon its release last month, “Mockingjay,” the third book in the trilogy, debuted at #1 on both the New York Times and the USA Today best seller lists. Collins was also named on Time ‘s 100 Most Influential People list of 2010. Along with potential helmers, much talk has surrounded the casting of the coveted lead role of Katniss. Names from Kristen Stewart to Chloe Moretz have been mentioned in connection with the project. It can be assumed that once a director is in place, casting will begin in earnest. VMAs Broke Ground Integrating Twitter With Live Show

Real-time integration of Twitter with the live show resulted in 9,200 tweets per minute about Lady Gaga alone. By Terri Schwartz MTV’s VMA Twitter Tracker Photo: MTV Sunday’s Video Music Awards became an interactive experience unlike any before it as fans took to Twitter and sent approximately 2.3 million tweets during the East and West Coast runs of the show. Not surprisingly, the woman who swept the awards show was the most talked-about celebrity on Twitter: Lady Gaga was the subject of more than 9,200 tweets per minute, which was more than half of the total tweets being sent about all of the artists being tracked by MTV’s Twitter Tracker . The largest measure of success for MTV Mobile’s Senior Vice President Michael Scogin was the real-time integration of Twitter into the main show, which is something that other awards shows, like the Emmys and ESPYs, have tried but have not been able to capitalize on as successfully. Because of the resounding success of the Twitter Tracker, Scogin expects that other programs will look to MTV in the future to set the standard for integration between live awards shows and social networking. “MTV knows how to create an immersive pop culture spectacle, and Twitter is the best way to see how the world responds moment by moment,” Chloe Sladden, director of media partnership at Twitter, said. “MTV’s bleeding-edge integration fused the story of the audience’s real-time excitement into the story of the VMAs itself.” This year’s show also caused almost double the tweet volume of last year’s VMAs, which is impressive considering Sunday’s show didn’t have as controversial a surprise moment as Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech last year. The show also marked a big increase from when the Twitter Tracker was used at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this year. There, the most discussed moment of the night — Tom Cruise and Jennifer Lopez’s dance onstage — only clocked in at 1,800 tweets per minute. Overall, the artists tracked generated an average of 15,000 tweets per minute. Following Lady Gaga in popularity were Cher with an average 7,100 tweets per minute, Eminem with 5,000 tweets per minute, and Rihanna with 4,700 tweets per minute. Rounding out the top 10 were Ke$ha, Paramore, Taylor Swift and Kanye West. Even more impressive than audiences simply tweeting about the VMAs on Twitter were the additional interactive elements implemented during the show. Gabi Gregg, MTV’s first-ever Twitter Jockey , asked Twitter users during the pre-show to start a trending topic, #ifbiebermetgaga, which immediately jumped in popularity and ended up being one of the top 10 U.S. trending topics of the night. Lady Gaga’s White-Carpet Guests Talk VMA VIP Experience

Gaga met the members of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network last week in Washington, D.C. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards with discharged soldiers from the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage You have to hand it to Lady Gaga . In addition to being a record-setting winner at Sunday night’s Video Music Awards , the international pop icon is a woman of conviction. Case in point. Last Tuesday, during the Washington, D.C., stop on her Monster Ball Tour, Gaga, a longtime gay-rights advocate, told her team that she wanted to meet with some members of the U.S. Armed Services who had been discharged because they are openly homosexual. Gaga was interested in learning more about the recent push to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy instigated by a California judge’s ruling last week that the Clinton-era military rule was unconstitutional and a vote by the House to repeal the legislation. “We met her before the show last week and told her our stories, and that’s when she said she wanted to do more,” said David Hall, 36, a former member of the Air Force who was booted out in August 2002 after a female cadet told his commander that he was gay and in an relationship. When confronted, Hall said he told his commanding officer he had no comment, but “he took her word for it over mine,” and Hall, a five-year veteran, was discharged. “We talked to [Gaga] for a bit and she said, ‘It would be great if I could bring you to the VMAs,’ ” he said. A longtime Gaga fan, Hall was ecstatic about the idea, but said it seemed unlikely that they could pull it off on such short notice. But when you’re Lady Gaga and you have 13 VMA nominations, it seems anything is possible. “I just kept thinking, ‘How can we get this together? Can we do it that fast?’ ” Hall said. “To my surprise, we were able to pull it off.” Hall and three of his cohorts — Katie Miller, Stacy Vasquez and Mike Almy &#8212 ended up walking the white carpet with Gaga and chatting with MTV’s Sway before they took their seats right behind Gaga in the Nokia Theatre in some of the most primo spots in the house. Hall has been working with the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network ( SLDN.org ) since 2006, helping the advocacy organization push to have “Don’t Ask” repealed. He said even with all the work he’s been doing for the organization, having Gaga spread the word to her 6 million Twitter followers and millions of VMA viewers was a huge boost. “I’ve done tons of media over the past four years … but I knew she would reach out to her Little Monsters and tell them about the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask’ on the white carpet and [it would have a huge impact],” he said. “You couldn’t ask for a better person to do it. She’s very genuine. It’s not some ploy to get attention. She really wanted to know about the repeal and why we need to get rid of ‘Don’t Ask.’ ” Though President Clinton had campaigned on the promise to allow anyone to serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation, the DADT policy was implemented in 1993 as a compromise gesture with Congress. It bars military officials from asking service members to reveal their sexual orientation, but also mandates that they could be discharged for offering the information themselves. It has long been criticized by the LGBT community over claims that it has led to harassment of service members, investigations based on rumors, and a double standard based on the military’s code of honesty and integrity. To date, more than 14,000 service members have been fired under the law. Gaga’s decision to use the VMA platform to publicize the attempt to push the repeal of “Don’t Ask” through — a commitment President Obama made during his campaign and which he has repeatedly said is his goal — came at just the right time, according to Hall. “The Senate is just coming back and we’re hoping that they will pass something this month,” he said, noting that Democratic control of Congress could possibly be weakened if Republican candidates score key victories in the November elections, which could set the repeal process back once again. “We were telling her that it is very important to speak out on this now,” Hall said of SLDN’s message to Gaga, who paid for the service members to fly out to Los Angeles for the VMAs. In addition to their swank seats and walk down the carpet, Hall said the organization members met with Gaga as she was prepping for the show earlier in the day Sunday to go over talking points. They also were invited to attend the post-VMA party put on by Gaga’s Interscope Records label, where they chatted with Mother Monster and her actual mother, Cynthia Germanotta. Hall’s highlight? “She gave us a shout-out during the acceptance for her first award,” he said. “And the interview with Sway on the white carpet … But every time Lady Gaga won, it was great. And when she won Video of the Year, I loved her meat outfit .” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Cuba to cut 500,000 gov’t workers

Cuba announced Monday it will cast off at least half a million state employees by mid-2011 and reduce restrictions on private enterprise to help them find new jobs — the most dramatic step yet in President Raul Castro's push to radically remake employment on the communist-run island. Castro suggested during a nationally televised address on Easter Sunday that as many 1 million Cuban workers — about one in five — may be redundant. But the government had not previously laid out specific plans to reduce the work force. The layoffs will start immediately and continue through the first half of next year, according to the nearly 3 million-strong Cuban Workers Confederation — the only labor union allowed by the government. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100913/ap_on_bi_ge/cb_cuba_mass_layoffs added by: ibrake4rappers13

B.o.B Promises ‘Spectacular’ VMA Performance With Hayley Williams

‘I’m gonna attempt to levitate,’ the ‘Airplanes’ MC jokes about first-ever set with Paramore collaborator on Sunday. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: MTV News The clock is counting down to Sunday’s VMAs, and for Video of the Year nominees B.o.B and Hayley Williams it means finally meeting for the first time. The two collaborated on the rapper’s top-five hit “Airplanes” but have never met — they recorded the song and shot their parts for the video separately. They’re set to meet Saturday afternoon (September 11) in Los Angeles when they rehearse for their performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards. “I think just the fact that me and her are performing on the stage at the same [event] is gonna be spectacular,” B.o.B told MTV News on Friday about anticipation for his appearance with the Paramore singer. B.o.B is also set to perform with Bruno Mars, bringing their #1 collaboration “Nothin’ on You” to the Nokia Theatre. And the combination performance, comprised of the two smash collabos, is among the most-anticipated. The Atlanta lyricist is excited about his prime-time performance and said he was thinking about a new wrinkle for his set. “I’m gonna attempt to levitate,” he joked. “I don’t know if the dynamics of the room will allow me to do that, ’cause it requires me to really pull from the sky.” B.o.B is one of the most-nominated artists at the VMAs, scoring nods for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video, among others. He actually found out about the recognition via Twitter. “I was just on Twitter checking to see what’s up, and then I saw I got nominated, and I was like, ‘All right, don’t mind if I do.’ ” he shared with us last month. The potential big haul left the melodic MC feeling special. “It’s very special to me,” B.o.B said. “I think it’s a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I’ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I’ve helped create. It’s definitely amazing. I’m trying to find the words to explain it, but I can’t. It’s inexplicable. I’m a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Heidi Montag Staged Bikini Pics So You Don’t Forget Her of the Day

Heidi Montag does whatever it takes to stay in the media, I guess she figures she’s put all this work into committing to being a trashcan of a person, focusing on nothing more than getting people to notice her, all while sacrificing any self-respect she might have…. That is why she pretended to get divorced to someone I think she pretended to marry. That is why they are now reporting she has a sex tape with some other useless attention whore. That is why she had the plastic surgery. That is why she is pretending to get the plastic surgery reversed. That is why she uses twitter to talk about massaging her implants. That is why she is in these staged bikini pics… The real unfortunate thing in all this is that I don’t find her hot, or interesting, or even human, she is so low grade they wouldn’t feed her to orphans or homeless people if she was beef, but I guess pussy in a bikini is pussy in a bikini…even if it is the representation of all that is wrong in this world… I do know that she’s gone this far, so the sex tape is probably real, and when it drops, I’ll be sure to climb on that like it was my wife busting my balls to fuck her….very cautiously…. The real depressing thing in all this is that she’s in Costa Rica and not Mexico, where she could have been confused for a drug lord’s slut wife, or a drug mule, resulting in her death…..but I guess we’re stuck dealing with her stunts a little longer…..
