Dancing With the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy has identified his dream partner for the upcoming season of the hit ABC competition series: U.S. soccer goalie Hope Solo! After giving Hope’s name immediately when asked who he’d love to partner with this fall, the Ukrainian hunk added, “Let’s do it! I want somebody hot, I want somebody exciting, somebody passionate, and I’ll do the rest.” Maksim took Kirstie Alley to the finals last season. He believes he could repeat that success with Hope Solo … provided her athletic footwork translates to dancing. Solo led the Americans into the World Cup final against Japan, where they fell just short of the championship, losing on penalty shots. Despite the heartbreak, Maks would offer Solo a chance for redemption, should ABC decide to give her a Dancing With the Stars whirl. “I’m waiting,” he says . “And please don’t hurt your legs.”
The U.S. women’s team fell to Japan in the World Cup final yesterday, but this kid’s epic celebration of America’s first goal almost made up for it. Seeing his native country take the lead late in the second half (the Americans ultimately lost on penalty kicks), was too much excitement to contain. It’s not looking good for this Rebekah Brooks character: The U.K. police investigation into alleged phone hacking took a dramatic turn Sunday with the arrest of Rebekah Brooks, the former chief of News Corp.’s U.K. newspaper unit who resigned Friday. London’s Metropolitan Police, known as Scotland Yard, arrested her around noon Sunday when she appeared by appointment at a London police station. She hadn’t been charged. It was the 10th arrest by police in a dual probe investigating allegations of voicemail interceptions and corrupt payments to police. The allegations focus on the News of the World, News Corp.’s Sunday tabloid that the company recently closed after 168 years amid an escalating scandal. By midafternoon on Sunday, Ms. Brooks remained in police custody along with her legal representation, according to a spokesman for the former News International chief executive. “She is assisting police at the moment,” the spokesman said, noting that the appointment with police was prearranged. “Until that’s completed, I can’t really say any more.” Ms. Brooks is due to come under public scrutiny this week when she appears before a parliamentary committee alongside News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch and his son, James Murdoch, News Corp.’s deputy chief operating officer. The trio will face questioning from U.K. politicians about the hacking and whether executives previously misled parliament. The News Corp. phone-hacking scandal involves allegations that the company’s News of the World tabloid illegally accessed mobile-phone voice mails and bribed police to get information. The scandal has been simmering for years but escalated to a new level recently with the allegation that the paper in 2002 hacked the phone of a missing 13-year-old girl who turned out to be dead. Ms. Brooks had become the public face of the scandal and for many British lawmakers their chief target. Chris Bryant, the Labour lawmaker who has pushed the issue hardest, said he was “delighted” by the news, and that Ms. Brooks should have been arrested in 2003 when she told a parliamentary committee that News International had paid police officials. Mr. Bryant thinks that police attention should now focus on James Murdoch, given he was privy to payments made to several people who had complained of phone hacking. “It feels as if the water is lapping around the feet of the Murdoch family now,” he said. Rebekah Brooks has gone from an employee of Rupert Murdoch, to the former editor of News of the World , to a woman under arrest all in one week. The disgraced journalist resigned from News International on Friday, following the revelation that her newspaper tapped the phones of over 4,000 people, including celebrities and the families of 9/11 victims. Now, British police confirm they have arrested Brooks for her role in this scandal. Brooks stands accused of conspiring to intercept communications and of bribing cops for information. She is the sixth, and the highest-ranked, News Corp official to be arrested in this case. The 43-year old is a friend of Prime Minster David Cameron and started working at News International in 2000. Murdoch and his son will appear before Parliament on Tuesday and answer questions about their media empire in Great Britain.

Thursday’s Emmy nominations were kind to the cast, but creator Ryan Murphy’s announcement Wednesday that leads Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer will exit the show after the third season came as a bit of a shock to the actors involved. Apparently, neither Colfer nor Monteith was aware that their time with Fox’s hit musical show would be ending so soon, though they did know their characters would be written off at some point to coincide with their impending high school graduations. “I didn’t necessarily know that it was going to be our last season next year,” Colfer told “Access Hollywood” . “I knew something like that was coming up eventually. I mean, we can’t be there forever. I don’t necessarily want to leave so soon, but it’s fine. It’s what it is, and all things come to an end.” Fortunately, things are on an upswing for Colfer. He earned his second Emmy nomination for the show Thursday, and after winning the Golden Globe earlier this year for his performance, there’s a good chance he’ll be taking Emmy gold home come September 18. Then, Friday morning (July 15), there was the announcement that “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks will be joining Colfer in his upcoming film project “Struck by Lightning,” which he both wrote and stars in. Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” actor Dermot Mulroney jumped onboard as well. Colfer also can look forward to the release of “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie,” coming August 12. The trailer for the film debuted online Thursday. The three exiting “Glee” stars all seem to be remaining optimistic about their upcoming departure. “We always knew we’d graduate in real time. It’s all part of the plan and it’s all good! It’s going to make Season 3 amazing!!!” Michele tweeted after the announcement hit the web. Both she and Monteith also have upcoming film projects. Michele has a role in Garry Marshall’s ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve,” filming now, and Monteith has the upcoming “Sisters & Brothers” in addition to his recently released “Monte Carlo.” Then there’s also the rumor, courtesy of RumorFix.com , that Michele and Colfer will be receiving their own spin-off show. He lives in the world of comic books, so he has in his head an amazing story already mapped out. When it comes to directing actors and understanding dialogue, he’s an incredibly talented writer. If something isn’t working for you as an actor within the words, he can walk away for 10 minutes and come back with seven options that are all fantastic and clever and witty and it’s got a pace and a banter,” he explained. “He’s a great guy to be quarterbacking this thing.” With regard to Captain America’s story line in “The Avengers,” the details of which Evans couldn’t fully divulge but are briefly teased at the end of “Captain America,” he said his character is basically a fish out of water trying to understand the modern world around him. “It’s really multifaceted. The guy has to accept the fact that everyone he knew and loved is gone,” Evans said of his character’s new arc. “Not only is he alone, [but] the world has changed so much, and I think a big part of what makes Cap Cap was his connection to the way things used to be, this kind of pro-American morality and good-ol’-boy sense of life and the way of doing things,” he added. “In the modern era, there’s a bit of a disconnect. There’s not as much human interaction. It took far too long in the eyes of many, but Rebekah Brooks is finally out at News International. The woman who served as the editor of Great Britian’s News of the World throughout its phone-hacking scandal – the tabloid broke into the voicemails of a 13-year old girl who had been kidnapped, along with the families of 9/11 victims and many others – resigned today. “As chief executive of the company, I feel a deep sense of responsibility for the people we have hurt and I want to reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know to have taken place,” she said in a statement. “I have believed that the right and responsible action has been to lead us through the heat of the crisis. However my desire to remain on the bridge has made me a focal point of the debate.” Brooks added that recent times have been “tough” and that she plans to correct “distortions” about her record as a journalist. ‘Captain America’ star opened up in rapid-fire Twitter session with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Evans Photo: MTV News Though the world’s attention is focused on Chris Evans in anticipation of his turns as Captain America in “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “The Avengers,” at heart Evans is just an average Joe who likes singing show tunes in the shower. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz set out to find the softer side of America’s superhero during a rapid-fire Twitter session with him on “MTV First: Captain America.” Evans revealed that he prefers his eggs scrambled, has a celebrity crush on Salma Hayek and still gets starstruck around Michael Jordan. But fans who submitted their Twitter questions wanted to know the real Chris Evans, the man that they would bring home to meet their parents. When asked whether he’s a good date, Evans admitted that he has some pretty good moves for the ladies. “Oh yeah, I’m a great date,” he said with confidence. “Chivalry was a big thing in my household. If you didn’t hold the door for a woman, my mother’s going to knock your head in.” Considering his superhero background, questions quickly became comic book-based. Apparently Evans’ favorite masked hero growing up was neither Captain America nor Johnny Blaze, both of whom he’s played on the big screen, but Spider-Man. At least he kept the answer within the Marvel family. Evans again voted against his onscreen alter ego when asked whether Iron Man or Captain America would win in a fight. “Unfortunately, probably Iron Man,” he confessed. “I’ve got to be honest. I’m being real.” Hopefully fans will get a chance to see that showdown once “The Avengers” hits the big screen. The most important question of the bunch, though, ended up being the one with the most surprising answer. One Twitter follower asked Evans what song he likes to sing in the shower, but Evans was too embarrassed to give a direct answer. “I grew up doing theater, so unfortunately it’s probably going to be in the world of show tunes,” Evans said with a laugh. When Horowitz prompted him to give up just one song he loves, the “Captain America” star refused. “It’s bad. I can’t even go any more than that,” he said, but then let slip that he’s a sucker for “Rent.” Well, today for you, tomorrow for us, Chris!
