New ‘Hunger Games’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

MTV News takes a closer look at the latest sneak peek. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Anytime we see anything new from “The Hunger Games,” it’s like Christmas came early around here. On Thursday (February 2), we were gifted with a brand-new teaser trailer for the film, which is set to air on Super Bowl Sunday. The one-minute spot features some familiar elements shown in the first full-length trailer , but there are also several juicy new items to look out for. Here are the five key scenes in the new “Hunger Games” teaser: Silver-Tongued Caesar Flickerman Finally, we’re starting to get sneak peeks at more key “Hunger Games” players. In this case, we get a good long look at (and listen to) Stanley Tucci as sweet-talking official “Games” interviewer Caesar Flickerman. Think of an over-caffeinated, duplicitous Matt Lauer, if you will. Flickerman’s job is to get the tributes to open up to him and “perform” for the Capitol audience. There is a perfect example in the teaser, as Tucci-as-Flickerman asks Katniss a loaded, personal question: “What did you say to your sister when you volunteered at the reaping?” “I told her I would try to win for her,” Katniss answers sincerely. “And try you will,” Flickerman adds with dramatic intonation in his voice, before bending down and kissing Katniss’ hand. Katniss Gives Prim The Mockingjay Pin For the book lovers out there, yes, this scene is different from how Suzanne Collins wrote it in the book, but it makes sense in the emotional context of the film. We see Katniss give her little sister a mockingjay pin and say, “As long as you have it, nothing bad will happen to you, I promise.” This is significant because the mockingjay is seen as a rebellious symbol to the Capitol. It should also be familiar to fans who’ve read the books, as the symbol graces the cover of “The Hunger Games.” Cinna’s Secret Gift This one relates to the opening scene of the teaser. Just before Katniss is sent up to the arena for the start of the Games, her intuitive stylist Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) pulls out the mockingjay pin that she gave her sister back in District 12 and pins it underneath Katniss’ jacket. It’s a powerful moment, in that it shows how in tune Cinna is with his tribute and that he believes in her strength, along with the fact that Prim somehow sent it along, because Katniss promised her that “nothing bad will happen” to her if she wears it. Katniss in Her Yellow Dress Again, this one is for our fellow readers of the book, but holy cow, they show Katniss in her yellow dress! It’s a very brief moment, but a loaded one. Without going into spoilers, because there are more than a few surrounding this particular look, the yellow dress Katniss wears is her most innocent-looking. Cinna designed it to showcase the softer side of the “girl on fire,” and the color was to be more like candlelight than flames. More President Snow And Effie Trinket We’ll take as many teases of the supporting players as possible, like the brief glimpse we get of Donald Sutherland’s likely first scene in the movie as President Snow. “Welcome! And Happy Hunger Games!” he says via a big-screen monitor transmitting the opening of the games from the Capitol. His voice has the perfect amount of gravitas and disturbing excitement for the upcoming bloodbath. And the puffiness of his white hair only adds to his menacing-but-stately look. Plus, we get a little more from uppity type-A escort Effie Trinkett, who eats up anything and everything official from the Capitol. “I just love that!” she says breathily after President Snow kicks off the reapings. “The Solar Parasite” Window Box Heater – Tiny Yellow House

This time around on “Tiny Yellow House”, I decided to mess around with passive solar heat so as to warm the always-cold front foyer of my home. The result: a smallish, closeable, passive solar collector that fits into a window opening. Its not rocket science (and it NEVER will be here on “Tiny Yellow House”) but it does work- even in January, in New England. Lady Gaga Visits White House To Discuss Bullying

Gaga met with administration officials to discuss their anti-bullying campaign By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Though she didn’t appear to get another audience with the President, Lady Gaga visited the White House on Wednesday to offer her help in the Obama administration’s anti-bullying campaign. Gaga met with administration staffers about her pet issue, but was unable to speak to the President in person, as he was in Kansas giving a speech on the economy. “Lady Gaga is a source of strength for many young people who feel isolated and scared at their schools. Today, I had the opportunity to welcome her to the White House, where we discussed ways we could work together to make sure that no child comes under attack, regardless of his or her race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other factor,” wrote Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett in a blog post on the White House website . “Lady Gaga has described this cause as a personal one — she has said that as a child, she was often picked on for being different. I am deeply moved by the way she has used her story, and her success, to inspire young people, and shine the spotlight on important issues.” Gaga previously met with Obama when she attended a fundraiser for the president’s re-election campaign in California in September. The singer, who recently announced the upcoming launch of the Born This Way Foundation along with her mother, was uncharacteristically low-key about the White House pop-in, not posing for photos or publicizing the visit. Jarrett went on to enumerate the various ways the administration has taken on bullying, including the White House conference on bullying held earlier this year by the president and First Lady Michelle Obama. The Lady Gaga event came on the same day that the administration released a new analysis of state bullying laws and policies, which shows that states have made some progress in enacting policies and legislation to address bullying, but that more work is left to be done. “As we continue protecting our children, we look forward to working with Lady Gaga, the Born This Way Foundation, and with every American who is willing to help make our society more kind, inclusive, and equal,” Jarrett said. Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers Among Rock Hall Of Fame Inductees

Guns N’ Roses, Donovan and The Faces will also be inducted in April. By Gil Kaufman Beastie Boys Photo: Capitol More than a quarter century after they brought hard rock back to the top of the heap, the original lineup of legendary Los Angeles band Guns N’ Roses will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April. Guns were among the acts named on Wednesday as the Class of 2012, which includes fellow L.A. rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers , iconic New York rap trio the Beastie Boys , 1960s pop singer Laura Nyro, the Small Faces (and their later Rod Stewart-led incarnation, the Faces), as well as mellow 1960s singer Donovan. Also on the roster for the induction ceremony, which will take place on April 14 in Cleveland and air on HBO in early May, is early influence blues guitarist Freddie King and nonperformer Don Kirshner, who created the Archies and Monkees and hosted the long-running live-music TV show “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.” Among those passed over
this year were the Cure, Joan Jett, Heart and hip-hip duo Eric B. & Rakim. Acts become eligible for the Hall 25 years after the release of their first single or album, so this year’s crop all started releasing music in or before the year 1986. Led by the mercurial lead singer Axl Rose, GN’R re-invented hard rock with 1987’s Appetite for Destruction , which featured such indelible glam-punk hits as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “It’s So Easy.” The band splintered a decade later amid a clash of egos, disagreement over musical direction and drug issues that resulted in Rose soldiering on alone with a parade of replacement sidemen. Before their induction was announced, buzz had already begun to build around a potential reunion between legendarily unfriendly co-founders Rose and guitarist Slash as well as the rest of the classic line-up, which included rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler. Rose is currently on the road with the new Guns. The Beastie Boys have been mixing rock, rap, soul, punk and funk for more than 30 years, helping to cross hip-hip over into the mainstream in a major way with their bratty 1986 full-length debut, License to Ill , rap’s first #1 album. After providing drunken anthems for a generation thanks to “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To) Party,” and “Brass Monkey,” they followed up with 1989’s head-tripping Paul’s Boutique , which set a new standard for artistry in sampling. They’ve continued to rock the mic over the course of five more studio albums, including this year’s Hot Sauce Committee Part Two . Funk-punk lifers the Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in Los Angeles in 1983 and released their self-titled debut the next year. Formed around the core of hyperkinetic singer Anthony Kiedis, high-energy bassist Flea, late guitarist Hillel Slovak and former drummer Jack Irons, the band made a name for itself with a spastic combo of funk, punk, hard rock and hip-hop, graduating from an underground fanbase to worldwide stardom and Grammy-winning albums thanks to such landmark tracks as “Give It Away,” “Under the Bridge” and “Scar Tissue.” Like the Who, English mod rockers the Small Faces were heavily influenced by American R&B, which they explored on signature songs “Itchycoo Park,” “Lazy Sunday” and “All or Nothing.” In their second phase as the Faces, members included future Rolling Stones rhythm guitarist Ronnie Wood and singer Rod Stewart. Late singer/songwriter Laura Nyro was just 19 when she recorded her debut in 1966, the same year folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary recorded her song, “And When I Die.” The fragile singer with an eclectic style wrote a string of songs that became hits for other acts, including “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Sweet Blindness,” “Wedding Bell Blues” and “Blowin’ Away.” She also scored her own hit with Carole King’s “Up on the Roof.” Psychedelic Folkie Donovan Leitch scored a number of hits in the 1960s, including “Sunshine Superman,” “Mellow Yellow” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” Dissension has become one of the reliable side stories of the Rock Hall ceremonies. While such notoriously splintered acts as Led Zeppelin and the Talking Heads managed to set aside differences for one night (Blondie, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Van Halen not so much), the biggest question this year is whether Rose will make nice with his estranged former bandmates. There are also question marks over whether the Beastie Boys will perform, as the group have eschewed public appearances since the July 2009 revelation that member Adam “MCA” Yauch was undergoing treatment for cancer
of the salivary gland in the throat. Related Videos MTV First: Red Hot Chili Peppers Related Artists Beastie Boys Guns N’ Roses Red Hot Chili Peppers

2012 Grammy Nominations: Kanye West Tops The List

Adele, Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars tie for six nods each, just falling short of West’s seven nominations. By Kelley L. Carter Kanye West (file) Photo: Getty Images For the second year in a row, a hip-hop artist is leading the pack in Grammy nominations. Although his name was only called for one category during Wednesday’s (November 30) “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!,” Kanye West walked away with a leading seven nods, following the hip-hop trend set by last year’s leading nominee, Eminem . He’s nominated for his Watch the Throne joint album with Jay-Z and also picked up a few nominations — including Song of the Year — for his powerhouse collaborative track “All of the Lights,” which features Rihanna, Fergie and Kid Cudi. He’s even nominated against himself, with Watch the Throne and his own My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy nabbing Rap Album of the Year nods. West was followed by this year’s critical darling, Adele , who is tied with the Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars for six nods each. Lil Wayne and dance-music breakout Skrillex each garnered five nods. While the Grammys have a reputation for catering to an older demographic (Robert Plant and Alison Krauss for 2009 Album of the Year, anyone?), this year’s nominees are notably young, with 34-year-old West looking downright geriatric next to fellow nominees Adele (23), Rihanna (23), Lady Gaga (25) and Bruno Mars (26). Take a closer look at this year’s Grammy nominees through photos! The 54th annual Grammys air Sunday, February 12, on CBS. Here are the rest of the nominations: Album of the Year

Wiz Khalifa/ Snoop Dogg’s ‘High School’ Soundtrack A ‘Big Deal’

‘I’m a fan of it, separate myself from making it. … Can’t wait,’ Wiz tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Exclusive Sure, Wiz Khalifa was only 5 years old when Snoop Dogg first stepped onto the scene as a guest on Dr. Dre’s 1992 classic “Deep Cover,” but the two cannabis-loving MCs won’t let their respective ages get in the way of collaboration. Wiz and Snoop will star alongside each other in the upcoming Dylan Brown-directed stoner comedy “Mac and Devin Go to High School” as well as on its smoked-out soundtrack. Mixtape Daily caught up with the Doggfather and Khalifa on the set for “Young, Wild and Free,” the soundtrack’s official first single, and got the scoop on the rest of the LP. “We got the homey Juicy J on the soundtrack, we got Curren$y on the soundtrack, but mainly it’s just me and Dogg,” Wiz revealed. Overall, Khalifa is just hyped up to work with one of his idols. They linked on Wiz’s “Black & Yellow” remix, Snoop’s “This Weed Iz Mine,” as well as a bunch of underground songs like “That Good” and “French Inhale.” “It’s a real big deal because nobody’s done it like that as far as a veteran in the game, an OG, a pioneer and then the newest, youngest, most exciting dude in rap coming through and really just giving people a complete project,” Wiz said. “I’m a fan of it, separate myself from making it, [I’m] a huge fan of it. Can’t wait.” As far as the musical vibe of the soundtrack, a laidback Snoop tried his best to describe it. “It’s something to relax you and get you through the day; it’s some real good music. The music is quality, I don’t even have no title for it, as far as what kinda music is it, it’s centric, it’s …,” Dogg said searching for the right words before his partner-in-rhyme lent a hand. “Eclectic,” Wiz chimed in. “Yeah, that’s probably what it is,” Snoop finished. Chris Brown Leads List of BET Hip Hop Award Winners

It’s good to be Chris Brown right now. Team Breezy has his back. Karrueche Tran is not pregnant. Even Rihanna says she’s a fan. And the BET Hip Hop Awards just bestowed three honors upon him. Most notably, Chris won Best Hip-Hop Video for “Look at Me Now.” Brown was on tour and not present, but Tweeted: “Thank you BET but most of all TeamBreezy!” The show, hosted by Mike Epps and MC’d by Da Brat (yep, she’s still around) opened up with a performance by T.I. (no word if the party bus took him there). Wiz Khalifa, Heavy D and Tyrese, Rick Ross and the Maybach Music Group, Big Sean and even DMX alongside Swizz Beatz hit the stage and rocked the crowd. Lupe Fiasco also took the mic and gave a political performance (big surprise) with a mysteriously masked female vocalist who turned out to be … Erykah Badu.
