Katy Perry, Lil Wayne And More (Possible) VMA Winners

Bigger Than the Sound guesses who will take home Sunday’s biggest Moonmen. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: Graham Denholm/ Getty Images The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on MTV this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, but if you’re a Katy Perry fan, well, you probably knew that already. After all, the California Gurl is the most-nominated artist at this year’s VMAs, leading the pack with an eye-opening 10 nods, including Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and the biggie, Video of the Year. Following closely behind her are the likes of Adele, Kanye West and Bruno Mars, but really, all eyes will be on Perry. Will she take home her first-ever Moonman? Will she sweep the night’s major categories? And, most importantly of all, what color will her hair be? Of course, KP’s not the only story line heading into Sunday’s show: Can Gaga win the only major award she’s up for? Can Tyler, the Creator shock the world? Luckily, I’m here to provide answers. Much like I’ve done in previous years (and mostly because I have a rather insatiable gambling addiction), I’m throwing on the old prognostication cap and trying my hand at picking the winners in all the major VMA categories. Of course, while I can’t guarantee my accuracy, I can promise you that I spent, like, 25 minutes on this, which is a pretty thorough investment. Oh, and for the record, I’m going with “puce” for Katy’s hair color. The rest of my picks right now: Best Male Video

‘The Avengers’ Assemble, With Other Disney Stars, At D23

We recap all the sneak peeks and news to come out of the Mouse House’s movie convention. By Terri Schwartz, with additional reporting by Kara Warner Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth Photo: MTV News “The Avengers” might not be assembling in theaters until May 4, 2012, but fans who attended Disney’s D23 convention in Anaheim, California, over the weekend were lucky enough to catch the cast joining forces in person. MTV News was on the scene too, so stay tuned for our interviews with the stars. In the meantime, here’s a little recap of the weekend’s highlights: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and Cobie Smulders all showed up to unveil two new clips from the upcoming superhero flick. It was the first time the group has come together publicly since 2010’s San Diego Comic-Con , and the first time “How I Met Your Mother” star Smulders has been part of the promotion for the movie. Both of the clips shown focused on the showdown between the Avengers and “Thor” bad boy Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, AceShowBiz reports. The first showed Loki trapped in a high-tech chamber in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Helicarrier, chatting with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. It is revealed that the chamber was actually created to hold the Hulk, but will hold Loki because he threatens Earth with war and “a force [he] can’t control.” The second scene featured Downey’s Tony Stark chatting with Loki in a private bar. “Let’s do a head count,” Loki says. “Two world class assassins” — the camera cuts to shots of Hawkeye and Black Widow — “a demigod” — cut to Thor — “a living legend who actually lives up to the legend” — a glimpse of Captain America. Stark responds by saying, “And you, big fella, you have managed to piss off every single one of them.” “I have an army,” Loki says. Stark strikes back, “We have a Hulk.” When MTV caught up with Downey and Hemsworth after the panel, the two were coy about any scenes other than the ones that have been revealed. Downey joked that his favorite scene in the movie was the one “in which we don’t reveal anything about the plot,” but Hemsworth admitted that his favorite was already revealed. “One of our first days was the whole assembly,” he said, referring to the scene that was revealed at the end of “Captain America: The First Avenger.” “That was pretty crazy. Not only meeting Robert Downey and Scarlett and whatever, but it was meeting Iron Man and Black Widow and the Hulk. It’s exciting.” Marvel wasn’t the only Disney division doing some heavy lifting at D23, though. Pixar showed up with a slew of announcements, including some news about unannounced upcoming films, ScreenRant recapped. First on the docket is “Brave,” the Scotland-based animated adventure that hits in 2012. In addition to showing some new clips of the movie, Pixar also released a fleshed out plot synopsis that gives “Brave” more context. “Monsters University” received a summer 2013 release date slot, and Pixar also added two yet-untitled animated flicks to its upcoming releases. The first, directed by “Up” helmer Bob Peterson, speculates on what would happen if dinosaurs never became extinct and should hit theaters in fall 2013. The second, directed by “Monsters, Inc.” ‘s Pete Doctor, explores inside the human mind and should be released at some point in 2014. Also on the animation front, Shock Till You Drop reported on the “Frankenweenie” sizzle reel that was presented at the panel, which included footage from the flick, behind-the-scenes moments and interviews with the cast members. The title card for the movie was also unveiled, as well as the news that Danny Elfman will be composing the flick’s score. “Frankenweenie” hits theaters October 5, 2012. Jason Segel showed up with his “The Muppets” co-stars Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy to present two new clips from the movie, Entertainment Weekly reported. Clip number one featured an inside look at Kermit’s house and showed that he’s stuck in his ’80s heyday, while clip number two showed off Muppets Rolf, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and Dr. Teeth trying to get the old Muppet Theater back in working order. Not to be outdone, the cast and crew of “John Carter of Mars” presented four new clips from their upcoming sci-fi flick. Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Lynn Collins stood with director Andrew Stanton to show off the footage, EW recounted. The unfinished clips featured scenes where the titular Carter first lands on Mars, gets captured by Thark leader Tars Tarkas, has to battle his way out of a gladiatorial arena and tries to convince his lady love not to go through with her arranged marriage. Vulture said the clips had “a distinctly Pixar sense of humor,” which can be attributed to Stanton’s history with the animation company. The last big presentation of D23 was for “Oz, the Great and Powerful,” and though there was no finished footage, the panel did get to see James Franco’s wizard and Michelle Williams’ Glinda in costume. AceShowBiz said that a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, narrated by director Sam Raimi, displayed concept art for the Emerald City, munchkins and the yellow brick road. The movie is currently in production in Detroit and is set to hit theaters on March 8, 2013. Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan Thank Pittsburgh For Hosting The Dark Knight Rises

On Thursday, Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan and Steel City first-timer Christian Bale held a Pittsburgh press conference to thank the city for hosting production on the final installment in the Batman trilogy. Nolan said that they chose Pittsburgh because “it is a very beautiful city on a very impressive scale and yet one which has a community that hasn’t lost its human scale.” So, not because of the Wiz Khalifa song ” Black and Yellow “? Go figure. Filming begins tomorrow. Principal photography started in May. [ Post-Gazette ]

Tyler, The Creator Thinks His VMA Rivals ‘Suck’

‘If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele’s,’ Tyler tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Tyler The Creator Photo: MTV News Tyler, the Creator bites his tongue for no one. Some call him evil, others, unbelievable. So when asked about his feelings on his 2011 MTV VMA Video of the Year nomination, Tyler simply spoke his mind. “I’m really excited, shout out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele ‘s,” he told MTV News. The Odd Future standout’s self-directed “Yonkers” video is up against Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” Beastie Boys’ “Make Some Noise,” Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” and Katy Perry ‘s “Firework.” The “Yonkers” clip, which was uploaded to the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All’s YouTube page back in February, has since racked up 15 million views. Most noted for the scene in which the rapper hangs himself in the end, the “Yonkers” video has become one of the most talked about and debated works of the year. It earned Tyler a Best New Artist nom as well. While the Cali rapper/producer/director is more respectful of his fellow Best New Artist nominees, he still wants to win that one too. Up against indie poppers Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks”), Big Sean (“My Last”), Kreayshawn (“Gucci Gucci”) and Wiz Khalifa (“Black and Yellow”), Tyler will let his guard down just a bit in this category. “The Best New Artist thing, that’s cool. Wiz is a really good dude and I’ve been a fan of his music, so if he wins I’ll be pretty excited. I wanna win that for sure, but Wiz is awesome, I’ve been listening to him since ’08,” he said. “Even Kreayshawn, she’s cool. So if she wins that too, I’ll be pretty stoked. But you know, I wanna win, I’m just gonna keep it 100.” Snagging a VMA has been a goal of the “Sandwitches” MC for months. He has been tweeting feverishly about it, but even he was surprised when he actually heard the nominations announcement. After the group manager called the entire OFWGKTA to a meeting, Tyler grew weary. “We were like, ‘What the f— does he have us here for?’ We were ready to leave. Then the VMA nomination thing came on and I was on my phone and I was like, ‘Oh crap I want to see what wack videos they have this time,’ ” Tyler recalled of his skepticism before being hit with the news. “Then they said my name and was talkin’ about it and I was like ‘What the hell?’ I kinda stopped breathing, I was just sitting there. I was kinda shaking. I don’t know, it was surreal.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Nia Long “Sweetly Surprised” By Unplanned Pregnancy

Continue reading here:

Nia Long is pregnant with her second child. And as much of a shock as it was for fans, it was for the 40-year-old actress, as well. Nia recently revealed to Us Weekly that her current pregnancy was unplanned. “I was supposed to go to Ghana to do a film and that’s when I found out I was pregnant. I had a doctor’s appointment to get the yellow fever shot and they were like, ‘Miss Long, we can’t give you a shot.’ [When they told me] I almost fainted. It was the best moment and the sweetest surprise ever.” She admits to having some new eating habits: “I’m craving salt like crazy. I’m usually more of a chocolate girl, but I haven’t been craving sweets.” And also admits that her first trimester wasn’t easy. “I was so horribly sick for four and a half months. Now I have energy, besides a little heartburn here and there, and I’m doing excellent. The baby is huge!” Nia Long Reveals Baby’s Father: Meet Ime Udoka! Nia Long Is Pregnant! [PHOTO]

Sade Keeps It Super Smooth On NY Tour Stop

‘Soldier of Love’ singer performed classics and recent hits after John Legend warmed up the crowd. By Rebecca Thomas Sade (file) Photo: Gus Stewart/ Getty Images UNIONDALE, New York — If the name Sade only conjures up a melancholy Diddy-Dirty Money lyric (from “Ass on the Floor”), then her reemergence on Tuesday night at Nassau Coliseum, a week into the North American leg of her 2011 world tour might not seem significant. But it’s been a decade since the iconic, often reclusive singer hit the road, and her presence onstage seemed to prove that pop still has its constants. Over the course of about 90 minutes, the Nigerian-born Brit waded through a discography that spans nearly 30 years and never seems to collect dust. In fact, her opener, “Soldier of Love” is a pounding battle hymn that shares little of the DNA of her ’80s classics. Dressed in all-black and perched atop strappy stilettos, Sade whipped up the adoring crowd, marching on to the stage and punctuating the song’s insistent drum line with kick steps. At 52, she is almost as willowy now — and still sporting the same slick ponytail, scarlet-stained lips and hoop earrings — as she is in those early MTV music videos for standards like “Smooth Operator,” which proved to be a multigenerational crowd-pleaser on Tuesday. And her smoky alto had a vocal range deceptively broader than her records might suggest. Supported by her longtime band/collaborators, Sade shimmied and kept the pace in flux, going from introspective ballads, like “Kiss of Life”(from Love Deluxe ) and “Pearls,” to midtempo cuts, like the roots-tinged “Love Is Stronger Than Pride” and “Sweetest Taboo.” This was notable because she’s built a catalog lined with sleepy tunes seemingly designed to ease you through the stages of heartbreak. While the boomer contingent came to their feet whenever the star dipped back to her ’85 Diamond Life debut (some even danced junior-prom style in the aisles), others were excited to hear her work from 2000’s Lovers Rock . If Picasso had his Blue Period , that album could be considered Sade’s Red, Yellow and Green period: The songstress had fallen in love and settled in Jamaica’s Montego Bay and seemed to absorb the culture, even sporting the signature Rasta colors on the album’s cover . She joined her backup singers for the blissful “All About Our Love” and demonstrated why she’s worn the crown for so long on “King of Sorrow.” Before signing off with another Rock cut, “By Your Side,” Sade recalled coming to NYC in her 20s, just another girl and her band trying to make it, and jokingly compared herself to Crocodile Dundee. It was probably only fitting that Maxwell was sitting just a few rows back from the stage on Tuesday night. The crooner is arguably one of the few who can even blink in Sade’s direction. John Legend is another, and he showed why during his opening set, throwing himself into smashes like “Ordinary People” and a delicious new arrangement of his “Green Light.” Have you seen Sade in concert? Tell us about it in the comments! Related Artists Sade John Legend
