Wiz Khalifa Says ‘Taylor Gang’ Is ‘Not A Departure’

Rapper responds to critics who say he’s gotten aggressive: ‘I don’t do anything that’s inappropriate for my style.’ By James Montgomery Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News AUSTIN, Texas — In recent months, first with the chart-topping success of “Black and Yellow” and then with his underground hit “Taylor Gang,” Wiz Khalifa seems to have gotten aggressive, a move that some see as a departure from his stony, laconic roots. But Wiz is not one of them. ” ‘Taylor Gang’ is not a departure for me or my style. Anybody who’s been connected to my whole career, they know the variations of where I go and my beat selections,” he told MTV News backstage at the Woodie Awards during South by Southwest. “Lex [Luger, who produced ‘Taylor Gang’] has been a real big fan since back in the day, and I’ve been up on his music for a long time as well, so it’s just been bound to happen. He’s a great guy and he’s really talented, so it’s just good to see him getting the shine he deserves.” And to anyone who still doesn’t agree with him, Wiz would like to point out that he’s actually been working with Luger for a while now — he produced a handful of songs on Wiz’s Cabin Fever mixtape — and that he wouldn’t sign on to work with anyone if he doesn’t feel like it would complement his music. “I just find that little pocket where it matches up. I don’t feel like I do anything that’s inappropriate for my style, and he’s always going to stay consistent as well,” he said. “So when we meet up, you know, that’s when it makes that magic. Cabin Fever has, like, six songs from Lex Luger on there, and people love that tape.” And with his hotly anticipated Rolling Papers album set to hit stores March 29, Khalifa said he’s hoping fans won’t bail on him just because he’s gotten a bit aggro as of late. Though, if they do, he’ll still continue doing what he does. “It’s definitely aggressive, but I’ve got songs on the album like ‘On My Level,’ ‘Black and Yellow’ is not really a calm song, so … they’ve got to keep listening,” he smiled. “Or, you know, they can stick there, but at the end of the day I know what I’m doing.” What do you think of Wiz’s new music? Wiz Khalifa Addresses Lil Wayne’s ‘Black And Yellow’ Slight

‘I don’t know why anybody would make it personal,’ rapper tells MTV News at South by Southwest. By James Montgomery Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News AUSTIN, Texas — Last month, during an appearance on ESPN, Lil Wayne discussed Wiz Khalifa’s massive Pittsburgh Steelers anthem “Black and Yellow” without actually mentioning Wiz himself. Some speculated that Weezy’s slight was intentional, a bit of revenge for Wiz taking shots at Young Money artist Tyga. Khalifa didn’t see it that way , instead describing the omission as “a missed opportunity.” It was a tellingly vague response, so when MTV News caught up with Wiz backstage at the mtvU Woodie Awards , we asked him to clarify his remarks. Was he returning fire at Wayne? “Nah, not really,” Khalifa said. “[I meant] an opportunity lost, but, you know, I feel like people have a chance to speak out and acknowledge younger people or people who are grinding and coming up in the game, and they don’t always take the opportunity. That’s all that was.” In fact, Wiz said that, if anything, he was taking the opportunity to address everyone who has slept on him in recent months. “There’s plenty of people who’ve missed that opportunity, there’s plenty of people who went back and taken that opportunity when they missed it,” he said. “It’s never too late. It wasn’t anything negative; it just is what it is. That’s the type of person I am. I’m a realistic person, so I tend to say realistic things.” And to further drive home the point that he wasn’t singling out Wayne, Khalifa said he’d most definitely want to work with him in the future and that he’s already moved on from the whole incident. “I don’t know why anybody would make it personal, you know?” he laughed. Wiz Khalifa Says ‘Roll Up’ Is ‘For Guys To Sing To Chicks’

Wiz talks to MTV News on the set of his Jake Davis-directed video. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias Wiz Khalifa on the set of “Roll Up” Photo: MTV News Oh, that Wiz Khalifa is so clever. The “Black and Yellow” star followed up his breakout single, which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Roll Up.” When he spoke to MTV News late last year, he teased the song as a nod to his favorite pastime — his album is called Rolling Papers , after all. “The next single is called ‘Roll Up,’ surprisingly,” he coyly explained with a laugh. The song, however, is anything but smoke inducing: It’s more of the skirt-chasing variety. “I was trying to be funny, be clever as possible,” Wiz told us recently on the set of the video for “Roll Up.” “It’s for the chicks. It’s for guys to sing to chicks. And it’s just a fun song.” In the clip, directed by Jake Davis (Drake and Trey Songz’s “Successful”), Wiz said he is “courting a female that I’m into.” Instead of real-life love interest Amber Rose, however, the Pittsburgh rapper has his sights set on the female lead in the video, Bad Boy recording artist Cassie. “It’s really, really awesome,” Wiz said of her casting. After being named one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11 celebrities to look out for in the new year, Wiz has managed to put a lot on his plate. He’s gracing the cover of the new Rolling Stone , he’s scheduled to start the Green Carpet Tour next month, and he and Snoop Dogg are finishing up their “High School” movie and music joint effort. But first, Wiz has to drop his album — Rolling Papers , his major-label debut, is set for a March 29 release — after a long rise to stardom for the former underground favorite. “I been waiting to put an album out for a long time,” he said. “But I feel like now my sound, at this point, has grown and matured and it’s right where it needs to be at for people to get that perfect pull and debut album from me. I’m ready to deliver.” Are you awaiting the release of Rolling Papers ? Tell us below! Related Artists Wiz Khalifa

Eminem, Rihanna To Co-Headline U.K.’s V Festival

The ‘Love the Way You Lie’ duo will share the stage at the event’s two sites this August. By D.L. Chandler Eminem and Rihanna Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images After weeks of speculation, organizers for the United Kingdom’s annual V Festival have revealed the 2011 list of featured performers, which includes two Grammy-winning headliners from across the pond. Eminem and hit “Love the Way You Lie” duet partner, Rihanna , will be headlining acts for the popular summer concert event on August 20 in Weston Park. Arctic Monkeys and Plan B, meanwhile, will serve as co-headliners that day at a sister concert held simultaneously at nearby Hylands Park. On August 21, the two sets of headlining acts switch stages and hold another concurrent concert — a hallmark of the festival. Em’s involvement in the event had been rumored for weeks, but without any solid confirmation that the Detroit bad boy would appear. Rihanna’s inclusion in the concerts also had been questionable, but organizers worked hard to secure the singer. Eminem’s star has been aglow of late, with the popular MC basking in the success of his seventh studio effort Recovery , which helped him snag the coveted Rap Album of the Year Grammy award for a second year in a row. Slim Shady’s Grammy-winning co-star Rihanna — who is a record-setting female solo artist for sales in the U.K. — has had another successful year. The Barbadian pop artist’s fifth studio release, Loud , has sold more than 1 million copies so far. Eminem and Rihanna will be joined by a few of their stateside pals at the V Festival, along with many notable U.K. acts. Some of the other artists slated to play the festival include “Black and Yellow” star Wiz Khalifa, pop singer Bruno Mars, rock legends Duran Duran, DJ/producer Mark Ronson and grime rapper Dizzee Rascal. The U.K. event is not the only big festival that Eminem is set to headline this year. In June, the rap star will be among the featured acts at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. Related Artists Eminem Rihanna

Wiz Khalifa Announces 17-City Green Carpet Tour

Taylor Gang leader kicks of Campus Consciousness trek on April 1 in Raleigh. By D.L. Chandler Wiz Khalifa Photo: Al Pereira/ WireImage After spending a few months away from the road as he prepares to release his major-label debut, Rolling Papers, Steelers superfan Wiz Khalifa is set to embark on a 17-city college tour aptly named “The Green Carpet Tour.” The “Black and Yellow” MC’s latest tour is a joint effort in conjunction with non-profit Reverb and Pretty Polly Productions as part of its Campus Consciousness Tour series. Wiz will be joined by fellow Pittsburgh artist Mac Miller on the college trek starting April Fool’s Day in Raleigh, North Carolina, before ending the tour in his home state of Pennsylvania on April 26. Wiz’s reputation for loving all things “green” precedes him, but this tour serves an even greater green purpose: It aims to promote environmental awareness by using clean burning biodiesel fuel to power his tour bus and only bio-degradable and recyclable products backstage. Wiz’s successful Waken Baken tour of last year was just the start of a series of notable wins for the charismatic rapper. The 23-year old sensation is a nominee for the 2011 mtvU Woodie of the Year award , and Rolling Papers is set for a March 29 release. Before he heads out on his Green Carpet Tour, Wiz will perform on the evening of his album release at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom. Dates for the Green Carpet Tour:

Brooklyn Decker’s Beautiful Breasts In A Bikini

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Brooklyn Decker looks pretty damn amazing in a bikini, we’ve all seen the trailer for her new movie where she walks out of the water in her yellow bikini…. Yes we have, many many times. Here she is in a promo shot for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition showing us exactly why Adam Sandler would cast her in his movies. Believe me, if I had a crappy movie franchise I’d be casting chicks like in pretty much every role. I know that they touch up these pictures to make the women look better and I don’t care, her breasts are spectacular. I want to rest my head in there, just for a moment.
