Andrew Garfield Surprises ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Fans

Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans and director Marc Webb also pop in during 3-D premiere of new trailer. By Kevin P. Sullivan Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Marvel / Columbia Pictures NEW YORK — Spider-Man fans came out in droves around the globe and in the web-slinger’s hometown to get “a sneak peek into the untold story” from the upcoming film. That’s all they knew when they lined up hours early outside Manhattan’s Regal Union Square. As similar events were taking place in major cities worldwide, no one in the audience knew about the surprises four of the events, in particular, held in store. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz moderated the New York event and welcomed fans as they took their seats. The theater grew quiet, and a live feed from L.A. replaced the Spider-Man insignia on the screen. The L.A. host welcomed the director of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” Marc Webb, to join him on-camera. Webb threw it to Rio de Janeiro, where Emma Stone was introduced. A trip across the pond revealed the film’s villain, Rhys Ifans , but it wasn’t until the special guest in New York that the crowd lost their minds. Andrew Garfield , the man behind the mask, stepped out from a side door, inciting an out-of-control roar from the theater. A man shouted “Hallelujah” from the crowd, and Garfield couldn’t help but agree: “Hallelujah. You said exactly what was on my mind,” he said. “It means the world to all of us that you care so much. Thank you for being here.” Back in L.A., Webb instructed the audiences around the world to put on their 3-D glasses for the new trailer for “Amazing Spider-Man,” hours before the world premiere. Each of the four special guests then answered a question about the upcoming film. Webb addressed the new story and villain. Stone described how Gwen Stacy is the polar opposite to Mary Jane Watson. Ifans explained how Dr. Connors’ flaws make him more significant and how the connection to Peter’s father makes the film more emotional. Garfield answered a simple question — “Why did you want to be Spider-Man?” — in a simple and honest way: “Because I’m not an idiot,” he said. “It’s the thing everyone wants.” He explained that the role doesn’t belong to him, the character belongs to everyone. Garfield even expressed hopes that the next actor to play Peter Parker would be “half Hispanic/half African-American,” like the current iteration of Spider-Man in the Ultimate run, Miles Morales. The event concluded with an extended sizzle reel, lasting about seven minutes in all, of new 2-D footage, much of which was unfinished. Scenes included an awkward and cute scene between Peter and Gwen and a short sequence showing Peter developing his powers. ‘Twilight: The Musical’ Vamps In New York

Harry, Ron and Hermione make ‘Twilight’ debut in the off-Broadway parody. By Amy Wilkinson The cast of “Twilight: The Musical” Photo: Dreamcatcher Entertainment NEW YORK — When “Dreamgirls” helmer Bill Condon took over direction of “The Twilight Saga,” more than a few cheeky journalists wondered if he’d treat fans to a bloodsucking song-and-dance extravaganza. Alas, vogueing Volturi weren’t meant to be — at least on the big screen. They have, however, found a temporary home on the New York City stage in the form of ” Twilight: The Musical .” The off-Broadway parody production premiered Monday night at the New World Stages, raising money for the charity Blessings in a Backpack. Written by Ashley Griffin and directed by Gabriel Barre, “Twilight: The Musical” is, for now, staged as a concert reading, meaning that the actors hold scripts throughout the show. But the cheat sheets did little to diminish the enthusiasm of the oft-hilarious production. A group of eight actors play more than 30 roles, with some pulling quadruple and even quintuple duty (such as standouts Lauren Lopez and Jenna Leigh Green). With her bobbing ponytail, zip-up hoodie, skinny jeans and sullen expression, Meghann Fahy (“Next to Normal”) is a dead ringer for Bella Swan (or, at the very least, Kristen Stewart’s portrayal of Bella Swan), while “Wicked” actor Colin Hanlon looks perfectly pained as Edward Cullen. Jared Zirilli (“Wicked”) spends the entire second act shirtless, portraying Jacob with the kind of earnestness that’s made Taylor Lautner the object of many a teen’s fever dreams. The show opens much as the “Twilight” movie does, with Bella’s monologue about her impending death followed by the cafeteria scene and the upbeat track “Looking for Something.” (Sample lyrics: “I think I see a Fork stuck in my road,” “We’re standing on the twilight of something good.”) The first act hems closely with its source material, including all the requisite scenes: Edward’s biology class freak-out, Bella’s car accident and the bookstore gang-up. Much of the dialogue comes straight from screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg’s script, too, albeit with much-welcomed embellishments. (Charlie to Bella: “I know it’s awkward starting in the middle of a semester, so I got you a truck!”) But things take a canon-twisting turn about two-thirds of the way through the first act when Hermione, Ron and Harry show up. Yes, someone got “Harry Potter” in our “Twilight.” Instead of Victoria, James and Laurent, Hogwarts’ finest play the villains here. The meta levels reach 11 when the wizards mistakes Edward for Cedric Diggory. And so it is that Ron tracks Bella down in her old ballet studio and is done in by the Cullen coven, leaving Hermione to avenge the death of her beloved. The first act closes on Bella’s birthday — the surprisingly bloody scene from “New Moon.” The second act opens with a freshly shorn Jacob (his wig somehow even mangier than Lautner’s) singing with his pack. From there, the production speeds through the last three books of Meyer’s series, compressing much of the story in favor of cramming it all in. Despite the odd pacing, the production sang thanks to details only a true fanatic could relish. Edward’s sparkling-in-the-sun effect is achieved with a glittery bodysuit hidden underneath the actor’s button-down like Superman’s spandex. The iconic apple from the book’s cover hangs limply (and obviously) from a springing wire gizmo as Edward tries to suavely hand it to Bella. Not to mention the actors muster plenty of fourth-wall-breaking furtive glances, letting the audience know they are in on the joke. But the tongue-in-cheek vibe is abandoned late in the second act for a sobering bit of moralizing from Harry, who comes to Bella in a dream sequence asking if it was all worth it. “You were willing to sacrifice everything to get a boyfriend,” he says. “In the end, you destroyed yourself.” Point taken, Harry Potter. But what a buzzkill. If you weren’t able to make the one-night-only charity benefit, don’t fret: Work is being done to bring the production to the New York stage for good.

Waka Flocka Flame ‘Lost’ After Slim Dunkin Murder

Police have so far been unable to identify gunman in Friday shooting in Atlanta. By Rob Markman Slim Dunkin and Waka Flocka Photo: MTV News Waka Flocka Flame is taking the Friday shooting death of his friend and rap cohort Slim Dunkin very hard. “WISH IT WAS ME … MY F—ING RIGHT HAND IS GONE,” Flocka tweeted the day after the murder. The “O Let’s Do It” MC continued to vent over Twitter, writing , “damn I feel dead” and “IM LOST” in reaction to the tragic news. Dunkin, who was born Mario Hamilton, was fatally shot once in the chest after an altercation with another man inside an Atlanta recording studio. Slim was an up-and-coming rapper in Waka’s Brick Squad Monopoly crew and had collaborated heavily with both Flocka and BSM-affiliate Gucci Mane. Atlanta police have interviewed a number of witnesses who were on or around the scene at the time of the shooting, but police have been unable to identify the gunman. “Right now we’re just trying to … identify who may have seen what, really just trying to put the pieces together,” Atlanta Police Major Keith Meadows told The Associated Press. “It seems everybody witnessed something very different. We’re just trying to go back and make sense of everything.” Despite their musical beef, rival rapper Kebo Gotti explained that he was in no way involved in the murder of his onetime friend. “I just don’t know what to say rite now,” Kebo said in a statement issued to MTV News. “What can u say u know when people are pointing the finger at you saying you killed someone you cared about just [because] you just had a fight, what can you say, what are you supposed to say about something like that. He was my brother.” Kebo, who was an original member of Brick Squad, split from the crew and has been involved in a beef with both Dunkin and Waka for some time now. The drama has even gotten physical. In an edited viral video that surfaced on World Star Hip-Hop in October, Gotti spews numerous insults at Flocka and is seen having a street fight with Dunkin. On Halloween, Slim released Menace II Society, a 20-track mixtape featuring Gucci Mane, Roscoe Dash and Pastor Troy. Rest in peace, Slim Dunkin. Leave your condolences in the comments below. Amy Winehouse Tribute Steals Show At ‘VH1 Divas’

‘VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul’ featured performances by Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Jessie J and many others. By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Hudson,Kelly Clarkson and Mary J Blige perform onstage during VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Glittering clothes , big voices and sassy songs about love, loss and everything in between ruled the night during “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” The concert was filled with booty-shaking, sing-along performances from Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Florence and the Machine , Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Jessie J and others, who rocked the Hammerstein Ballroom for the show, which aired Monday night (December 19) on VH1. With an assist from the night’s house band the Roots, it all kicked off with Hudson, Clarkson and Blige channeling the Supremes for “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” before launching into a medley of their own tracks, “Spotlight,” “Real Love” and “Since U Been Gone.” The performance set the tone for the night, which not only paid homage to the women in the room, both legendary and up-and-coming, but also the cities that birthed some of the most soulful songs in music history, including Chicago, London, Detroit, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee. Through the night, divas from all walks of life, including Erykah Badu, Estelle, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan, Martha Reeves, Marsha Ambrosius and Ledisi, as well as a few divos (Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy), sang some of the biggest hits from soul music’s lush history. The set list included a sampling of tracks like “Nowhere to Run” by Martha and the Vandellas, “Walking on Broken Glass” by Annie Lennox, “I’ll Take You There” by the Staple Singers and “Ain’t Nobody” by Khan herself. When the cities themselves weren’t being honored, the divas were, with solo performances that demonstrated the ladies’ killer vocal prowess. Florence Welch, Clarkson, Sharon Jones, Jessie J, Scott, Hudson and Blige each took the stage to give some shine to their own tracks and pop styles, proving that soul music is a genre that is still alive and well. The Amy Winehouse tribute was the culmination of the night. Although “VH1 Divas” was all about the living performers who belted out songs at the concert, the presence of one diva gone too soon was certainly felt. Instead of focusing on the loss suffered when the British songstress died over the summer, the show focused on a celebration of her music. “What’s up New York?” the tribute’s MC, Nas, asked the room. “When the legendary Amy Winehouse sang about me in her song ‘Me and Mr. Jones,’ I was so honored. Amy Winehouse was my true soul sister.” The two worked together on her Lioness: Hidden Treasures track, “Like Smoke.” “I’m here to honor a woman who had enough soul to last a lifetime,” he added. The presence of his “home girl” was felt in the room thanks to her game-changing music as reimagined by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (the latter of whom worked with her on her Back to Black album), Florence Welch and Wanda Jackson. The medley included her soul-killing breakup track “Back to Black” and her sassy anthem “You Know I’m No Good.” Related Artists Amy Winehouse Kelly Clarkson Jennifer Hudson Florence + the Machine Mary J. Mary J. Blige, Jessie J On What Makes A ‘VH1 Diva’

‘I think it’s someone that’s strong in their beliefs,’ Dolly Parton tells MTV News before show, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT tonight on VH1. By Jocelyn Vena Mary J. Blige Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — On Sunday night, some of the music industry’s biggest divas gathered at Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan to pay tribute to some of the most-soulful divas in the biz for “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J and Jill Scott all put their new-millennium spin on classics from cities like Detroit, Chicago, London, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee. “I don’t even know what a diva is,” Dolly Parton told MTV News on the red carpet before the big show kicked off. “I think it’s someone that’s strong in their beliefs, strong in their own talent, strong in who they are. … I see a lot of divas around here, and some say I am one, and I don’t know if that’s true or not,” she joked. “Do you think I’m a diva?” Jessie J waxed poetic about the title “diva.” “Sometimes the media can completely misunderstand what the word ‘diva’ means,” she said. “To me, tonight is what it’s about, and every single person’s that been here that’s had longevity, passion, consistent, amazing music that goes around the globe. For me to be a part of it in any way is incredible.” The show recalled some of the greatest hits from divas present, past and future. And it even took time to fondly remember the late Amy Winehouse, whose own music was so deeply inspired by soul music of days past. “She’s in a class by herself,” Mary J. Blige said. “She just broke the mold when she came out; it was like, ‘Wow, who is this?’ And I could hear all of the pain before I even knew she had pain.” While every diva at the show, which airs Monday night (December 19) on VH1, has played a pivotal role in pop music, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy doesn’t believe that many will be as influential as Winehouse. “I don’t think there’s gonna be another voice that cut through the way her voice cut through,” he said. “And I think that alone makes her a legend.” Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine , one of the performers during the tribute, summed up Winehouse: “She was the most incredible artist, and I feel kind of overwhelmed to be doing it,” she said. She later took the stage with Nas, Wanda Jackson and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings to remember Winehouse’s catalogue of music. “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul” airs at 9 p.m. ET/PT tonight on VH1. Jay-Z Hints At Solo, Kanye And Throne Albums In 2012

‘We’re really in a great place creatively,’ he tells MTV News of three possible projects. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Are you ready to Watch the Throne again? With Jay-Z and Kanye West still riding high off the success of their summer masterpiece, the duo just may get back in the studio and give fans another dose, Hov revealed to MTV News. “It depends on how this thing finishes up,” Jay said in reference to his and Kanye’s current Watch the Throne Tour. “We — I say ‘we’ because I’m in Throne mode — we’re in a great place creatively. You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. You know, we’re really in a great place creatively. We really found our zone.” Back in July, during an intimate listening session for the then-unreleased WTT, Jay revealed to a room of reporters that he had two songs already recorded for his yet-untitled 11th solo album but hasn’t talked about it very much since. It’s been two years since Jigga dropped his last LP, The Blueprint 3. Kanye, on the other hand, released his last solo album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, in 2010. It was both a commercial and critical success, but was noticeably absent from the Album of the Year category when Grammy nominations were announced last month. During a December 1 Throne concert in his hometown of Chicago, Yeezy addressed the snub , surprisingly blaming himself for releasing Fantasy and Watch the Throne in the same year. “Don’t worry, because me and Hov are gonna keep on making sh–,” he told the crowd. Jay, who on Thursday announced a pair of charity concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall , didn’t give official word about when fans can expect any of the three projects, but he is definitely in his zone! How excited are you for new Jay-Z, Kanye West and Throne albums? Tell us in the comments!
