Jani Lane Recalls ‘Cherry Pie’ Criticism In Vintage Video

‘We thought it was a pop-art video,’ singer said of sexy clip featuring model Bobbie Brown. By Jocelyn Vena Warrant’s Jani Lane in 1991 Photo: MTV News In 2011, Warrant ‘s video for “Cherry Pie” hardly seems very controversial. But when it was released in 1990, the kitschy clip, featuring model Bobbie Brown dancing around in super-short cutoffs and a red halter as the bandmembers drool after her, earned them a bit of flak. Following the death of frontman Jani Lane on Thursday, as fans remember Warrant’s biggest hit, MTV News looked back into the archives to find Lane’s defense of the clip and song, whose lyrics aren’t exactly talking about baked goods. “We put out the ‘Cherry Pie video [and] we had a girl in it, she wasn’t completely [naked but] she didn’t have a parka on, so right away we got labeled as a sexist bunch of kids,” he said in 1991. “But we did it because we thought it was a fun video. We thought it was a pop-art video. It was a fun song. That’s the roots of rock and roll. Chuck Berry wrote about cruising around in the car, in the back seat with a girl, so that’s what ‘Cherry Pie’ was, and you can take it for what it’s worth.” Lane and Brown later married and had a daughter together before divorcing in 1993. Lane was found dead in his hotel room in California on Thursday. He was 47. Share your memories of Warrant’s Jani Lane in the comments below. Jay-Z, Kanye West Open Watch The Throne Pop-Up Store

Superstar duo will sell copies of their brand-new album from shop in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. By Rob Markman The Watch The Throne pop-up store in New York City Photo: Rob Markman/MTV News NEW YORK — Watch the ingenuity. In what has already been an unorthodox album roll-out, Jay-Z and Kanye West are keeping the surprises coming during the record release for their tag-team LP, Watch the Throne . On Friday afternoon (August 12), the duo erected a pop-up store to sell copies of the album in Manhattan’s trendy SoHo neighborhood, and MTV News was among the first inside. When the album dropped on Monday as an iTunes digital exclusive , it seemed that Friday’s physical release of the LP would be nothing more than an afterthought. Not so! The store-front, located at 201 Mulberry Street, is regally wrapped in gold, just like the album’s Riccardo Tisci-designed cover art, the real attraction however is inside. As if slinging albums weren’t enough, Hov and Yeezy are putting the tricked-out Maybach from their “Otis” video on display inside of the retail space. Read what some hip-hop DJs had to say about “Otis” as an unconventional single. The black luxury vehicle sits there in all its remixed glory: hood on the trunk, trunk on hood, doors ripped off. Unfortunately, there is a strict no photo/no video policy in the store, but visitors are allowed to walk right up to the ‘Bach-mobile and can even touch it. On a large overhead screen, the Spike Jonze-directed “Otis” plays on a loop. There are even rumors that Hov himself will make an appearance sometime tonight and the store will be up until Sunday. For fans stopping by the Mulberry Street store, it will be open on Friday until 10 p.m. ET, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jay, who doesn’t take to his Twitter often, posted the SoHo address this afternoon. So much of the Watch the Throne release has been shrouded in mystery. Other than “H.A.M.,” which was released in January and the LP’s first official single “Otis,” fans had heard nothing from Hov and Yeezy’s project until it was released Monday morning. Who knows what they will come up with next. What did you think of the “Otis” video? Share your thoughts on Facebook or tweet your reactions and videos @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVOtis! Ryan Gosling Declares His ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ For Emma Stone

‘She’s everything, all the time,’ Gosling tells MTV News at film’s NYC premiere. By Amy Wilkinson Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Ryan Gosling may have an Oscar nomination to his name, but the leading man didn’t have to strain his acting muscles too much to portray a man enamored of Emma Stone in the upcoming romantic comedy, “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” When we caught up with the 30-year-old at the movie’s New York premiere Tuesday night, he was more than happy to dole out accolades for his co-star. “She’s everything, all the time,” he said. “There’s no one like her. As soon as she signed on for this movie, I knew it was going to be good.” In the film, which hits theaters July 29, Gosling plays lothario Jacob, a love-averse playboy who takes Steve Carell’s Cal under his wing to teach him the ways of a skilled pickup artist. Yet, in the end, Jacob himself unwittingly finds love with Stone’s Hannah — a role Gosling said was perfectly cast. “The whole film depends on my character giving it all up for her,” he said. “When she came in the room, it all made sense. Show me someone that wouldn’t give it all up for Emma Stone, and I’ll show you a liar.” The admiration, however, certainly wasn’t one-sided. Stone, who stars alongside both Gosling and Justin Timberlake (“Friends With Benefits”) this month, had a hard time wrapping her head around her collection of amazing co-stars. “It’s pretty wild, isn’t it?” she said. “It’s not too shabby. Those Mickey Mouse Clubbers, I’m going to take them by storm.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Jay-Z Is Two Songs Deep Into Next Solo Album

Working on Watch the Throne with Kanye got the creative juices flowing for Blueprint 3 follow-up. By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — While fans are still eagerly waiting for Jay-Z to drop his collaborative album with Kanye West, Watch the Throne, he has already started working on his next solo album. At an exclusive listening session for Throne on Thursday night at the Mercer Hotel, the Brooklyn rapper revealed that he is two songs deep into recording his 12th solo LP. The experience of creating the collaboration was so positive, Jay said, it inspired him begin working on new material of his own. Besides the two songs he has already completed, which he claimed were the best first pair of tunes he has ever created for one of his albums, he also has another four ideas ready to go. “I know exactly the tone and the whole feel of the album,” Jay-Z said of the follow-up to 2009’s platinum-certified The Blueprint 3. “I think when you experience creativity, you should get it out as much as possible.” Even though Watch the Throne isn’t in stores yet (pre-order receipts seem to indicate, unofficially, that it will be out on August 2), the “Empire State of Mind” rapper doesn’t want to stifle the creative juices that started flowing when he was working with West. And the inspiration flowed both ways, it seems. After getting Odd Future singer Frank Ocean to record a song for his solo album, Hov decided to have the crooner contribute his vocals to two Watch the Throne songs. So will this new solo effort come out before the discs from his Roc Nation signees J. Cole and Jay Electronica ? “Hopefully,” he quipped, before adding, “I don’t play that. We’re all competing for the same mind share. J. Cole and Jay Electronica are both making inspiring music.” Related Artists Jay-Z

‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’ Thrills Opening Night Crowds

Robot flick nabs $13.5 million from Tuesday-night screenings. By Morgan Schwartz Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whitely in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount NEW YORK — The “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” red carpet in Times Square on Tuesday evening was packed with fans, stars and possibly a few Autobots eager to see the third installment of Michael Bay’s explosive franchise . Theaters across the country were similarly swarming during evening screenings on opening night, with the alien robot flick nabbing $13.5 million in pre-midnight and midnight screenings, according to Deadline.com . And though the atmosphere in front of the screening that MTV News attended was excited, several in the crowd were cautious about their hopes for the flick. “I’ve actually had lower expectations since the second one,” Joseph Dornoff told us before he walked in. “So, I’m not expecting anything from it.” His friend, Patrick Farace, who has been anxiously waiting to see the third film since he heard of its release, also shared his hope to see “a better plot than the last one, amazing action. I’m excited to see Shockwave — he’s the new villain.” Judging by the reaction in the audience, “Dark of the Moon” surpassed many people’s expectations. Fans clapped, cheered and possibly even shed a tear as the Autobots battled the evil Decepticons in their quest to bring home planet Cybertron to Earth. Although the third film featured the same basic good vs. evil fight peppered with romance as the first two, everything seemed to be bigger in this one. The battles between Megatron, Sentinel Prime, Bumblebee and Optimus Prime were the clear fan favorite. “[It’s great] when Optimus comes by and just starts ripping everybody apart,” said Wesley Arocho after the movie was done. “This action is made even more exciting by the fact that for the first time, audiences got to view it in 3-D .” “The 3-D was great. All the special effects were great,” Carlos Barrozi added. “It was better than past movies. It didn’t hurt your eyes. You were able to watch it without wanting to take your glasses off,” said Briana Brink-Rivera. Two friends, Mustafa Ahmed and Munawar Ali Mohd, even went so far as to say seeing the epic Chicago action in 3-D was “a dream come true.” Even Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf) love life seemed to be hotter in the third film. When asked which of Sam’s love interests they preferred, newcomer Rosie Huntington-Whiteley or former franchise hottie Megan Fox, brothers Brandon and Bryce McCright responded simultaneously, “Rosie!” If the response on opening night is any indication, Bay and company can rest assured that they’ve redeemed themselves after “Revenge of the Fallen.” Now, the only question that remains is: Can we expect a fourth? Kara DioGuardi Opens Up About Lindsay Lohan, ‘No Boundaries’

We ask ‘Platinum Hit’ judge about the less-than-stellar credits in her catalog. By Jim Cantiello Kara DioGuardi Photo: MTV News In her decade-plus career, Kara DioGuardi has helped write some of the biggest hits for artists like Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Cobra Starship, Carrie Underwood, the Pussycat Dolls and countless others. But when you’re an in-demand pop songwriter and you’re churning out tracks at a breakneck pace, they can’t all be winners. Hell, even John Lennon and Paul McCartney published a few turkeys. Lucky for fans, DioGuardi’s sense of humor is just as strong as her sense of melody. Jennifer Aniston Calls New York Gay Marriage Vote ‘Unbelievable’

‘Horrible Bosses’ co-star Jason Sudeikis suggests to MTV News that Jay-Z add a new verse to ‘Empire State of Mind’ after Friday’s passage. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Aniston Photo: MTV News In the hours after New York’s historic passage of a same-sex marriage bill on Friday, the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, the site of the riots in 1969 that galvanized the gay-rights movement, became a euphoric gathering place for supporters to celebrate the development on the eve of Gay Pride Week. The news reverberated around the globe, with celebrities like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Ellen DeGeneres sharing in the excitement. And the next morning in midtown Manhattan, just a few miles away from Stonewall, the stars of the upcoming comedy “Horrible Bosses” were nothing short of ecstatic about the events. “It’s great! I thought it was unbelievable,” Jennifer Aniston told MTV News. “So exciting in this time and that it happens to be Gay Pride weekend. What a great weekend.” Aniston went on to joke that she could end up taking a trip down to Stonewall to see the action up close. “I might,” she teased. “It won’t be crowded.” “Saturday Night Live” star Jason Sudeikis said the gay-rights bill is great news for everyone — except one man: “The only person I feel bad for is Jay-Z, because he’s going to have to write a new verse for that song, ‘Empire State of Mind,’ because New York just got a little more kick-ass!” Those sentiments echoed what celebs had been saying for hours on Twitter. “NEW YORK! I [love] U! You’re OFFICIALLY the coolest place on the planet!” Perry tweeted. Gaga chimed in on Twitter, “Rejoice New York, and propose. We did it! The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice + equality.” Share your reactions to New York’s same-sex marriage bill in the comments below. New Yorkers Celebrate ‘Groundbreaking’ Gay Marriage Passage

‘This couldn’t have come at a better time,’ says Gay Pride Week participant outside the Stonewall Inn. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images NEW YORK — With the historic passing of the same marriage equality bill in New York State on Friday night, the streets of the city have since been flooded with excited members of the LGBT community and other supporters on what just happens to be Gay Pride Week. Crowds of people have continued to drop by the Stonewall Inn, the famous site that has come to be known as the birthplace of the world’s gay rights movement following the infamous “Stonewall riots” that followed a police raid on the bar in 1969. Erin Healy of Albany, New York, recalled the groundbreaking moment. “I was with my friends last night and everyone was like, ‘The bill’s going to get passed!’ So we were like, ‘Turn on the news!’ and then all of a sudden it was like, ’29 to 33, it’s passed!’ ” “I just think this is such a groundbreaking moment in gay history,” expressed 21-year-old Brianna McDonald. “This vote was so important to the young crowd because it actually gives us something to look forward to, to get married if we want to.” “We are in the gayest part of town!” laughed Tony Benninelli of Queens, who was out with his friends in the West Village celebrating Gay Pride. “This couldn’t have come at a better time.” Jesse Kissel was especially keen on noting the part that both the Stonewall Inn and New York City played when it came to this epic moment. “This is where it all started,” he smiled. “This was where the revolution began, where people started realizing that we need rights and privileges.” The passing of the act gave Miami resident Jorge Orobitg a new hope for his own state. “New York is a big state,” he said, “so that means we’re heading in the right direction.” ( Read how California residents reacted to the news. ) “Hopefully, this will sprout a nationwide thing,” Erin Healy said. “It’s just something ridiculous to me that it’s taken even this long to happen.” Share your reactions to New York’s same-sex marriage bill on Facebook. Rakim, Backed By The Roots, Revisits Paid In Full

Black Thought sits in for Eric B. at 25th anniversary concert. By Alvin Blanco Black Thought and Rakim Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Rakim is an MC who hails from the era of hip-hop when samples were the source of most of rap music’s booming sounds. Wednesday night, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the iconic and influential MC’s debut album, Paid in Full, Rakim performed his seminal classic in its entirety with Philadelphia group The Roots providing all the backing instrumentation. MTV News caught up with “The R” and the Roots crew’s Black Thought at legendary New York jazz club the Blue Note, where the show went down, to discuss the two acts linking up and hip-hop’s embrace of live instruments. “The Roots is hip-hop royalty right now,” Rakim said. “From what they do, what they bring to the table, for them to holla at me, put this together, invite me out, that let me know, ‘Yo, it’s official.’ Otherwise, they wouldn’t. It’s a good feeling to be around this long and still get that love.” Eric B. dropped Paid in Full with Rakim on July 9, 1987, according to the RIAA, but Wednesday night, Black Thought assisted the God MC onstage as the Roots re-created all of the album’s beats with aplomb. The Long Island native performed songs from his classic album, such as “Eric B. is President” and “Move the Crowd.” The Roots, besides holding down duties as the in-house band for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” have backed a number of prominent hip-hop acts in the past, including Jay-Z. While MCs being backed by live bands is now a common occurrence, the Roots remember clearly when that was not the case. “Back then, I couldn’t even imagine people taking hip-hop seriously being played with live instrumentation,” Black Thought said. “When we first got our record deal, it was in the era of Nas and Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep and B.I.G. — we was like the odd man out. “Right now, hip-hop is as musical as it’s ever been. I feel like that’s a 360 degrees, man. From having to prove ourselves coming up to now it’s a standard. It’s almost unheard of to go out and do a tour … without having a band. For young kids coming up, they don’t know what it is to be in a realm of hip-hop without live instrumentation and musicality.” But even with hip-hop’s constant musical advancement and development, Black Thought still counted the boom-bap rhythms and lyrical innovations of the night’s special guest as a crucial inspiration, saying, “I wouldn’t have pursued the craft the way I pursued it and linked up with [Roots drummer] ?uestlove had it not been for Ra’s influence.” Share your memories of Paid in Full in the comments below!
