Ryan Leslie Says ‘You Be Killin’ ‘Em 2’ Is An ‘Event’

R. Les tells MTV News ‘supergroup’ partners Fabolous, Ne-Yo bless remix, ‘Look at Her,’ with peek at what’s to come. By Rebecca Thomas Ryan Leslie Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — For any girl who takes her style seriously — like, blow the rent on a striped concoction from Prada’s spring/summer 2011 collection serious — 2010 was a good year for primpin’-ain’t-easy rap. Big, tag-flaunting singles like Drake’s “Fancy” and Rick Ross’ “Super High” expressed shock, awe and appreciation for girls and their fashion. And, for coining the word “shoe-icide” alone, the Ryan Leslie-produced Fabolous single “You Be Killin’ ‘Em” earned monster status on that playlist. Now, Leslie is aiming to follow up the radio smash with another heater. We ventured downtown last week and caught up with R.Les just before he headed out for his Coachella festival debut. He gave us a preview of Les Is More, his first post-Universal, indie release due July 4, teased his much-discussed supergroup and let us in on “You Be Killin’ ‘Em” — the sequel. “We just did a ‘You Be Killin’ ‘Em,’ part 2 called

Exclusive: Nicki Minaj In Talks To Join Britney Spears’ Tour

Young Money MC has been a rumored front-runner since Enrique Iglesias dropped out. By Alvin Blanco Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Nicki Minaj confirmed to MTV News that she is in talks to join Britney Spears on her upcoming tour. We caught up with the Young Money princess before she performed at Casio’s TRYX OUT: NYC 2011 Launch Party at the Best Buy Theater on Thursday night. “I am in talks of joining Britney Spears, yeah,” Minaj said in the British accent of her Martha alter-ego . “I’m in talks about a lot of things, ya know. I don’t know — oops, I did it again.” Rumors of the possibility of Minaj becoming the opening act on the singer’s tour promoting Femme Fatale began circulating shortly after Enrique Iglesias dropped out of the lineup . Nicki is currently on the Lil Wayne-headlined I Am Still Music Tour , but that concludes May 1 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, while the Spears tour is scheduled to kick off June 17 in Sacramento, California. The hectic travel schedule — Nicki is set to fly out right after the Best Buy Theater performance to rejoin the I Am Still Music Tour on Friday (April 8) in Greensboro, North Carolina — is the Queens MC’s only qualm about hitting the road. “I’m getting sick every other day,” she said. “That’s the one downside. I keep my dressing room warm, and then of course when we go out to the stage area, it’s freezing cold, and then when we do the afterparty, it’s cold. And then flying and stuff like that. That’s the only downside about touring. It’s just to keep your physical health in order. I was just recuperating from being sick last night and then we flew out here; the plane was freezing, and I think I got sick again. That’s the only downside — that’s the only one.” Would you like to see Nicki on Britney’s tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj Britney Spears

Justin Bieber Wax Figures Unveiled

Wax versions of Bieber land in NYC, London and Amsterdam. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber with his wax figure in London on Tuesday Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — Justin Bieber’s wax statues are here! Three statues were unveiled at Madame Tussauds wax museums around the world, in New York, Amsterdam and London. Bieber was on hand in London to catch a glimpse of his wax likeness. And, as promised, the statues feature Bieber’s old, swooping hairstyle . At the London unveiling, Bieber tweeted about how excited he was for the wax statues. “Arrived at @tussaudslondon to see my WAX figure!! the 1st time i saw a wax figure was in nyc and all we could do was look thru the glass,” he wrote. “Now we are here in London and they r about to show my figure here and in amsterdam and in nyc at the one we looked thru the glass. #DREAMBIG.” Bieber’s statue in New York is featured alongside his pal and mentor Usher in the VIP room. The NYC Bieber statue is wearing a black vest by will.i.am and pants by Balenciaga. The clothes were donated by Bieber himself. MTV News was on hand at the New York unveiling, where fans eagerly caught a glimpse of their idol’s figurine. So how accurate is the wax figure? “It’s pretty good. I love Justin Bieber, and this is pretty hot,” gushed Libby Walker, who said she also attended the Miley Cyrus wax-figure unveiling in 2008. “He cut his hair recently, so it’s not exactly the same, but I like his hair. A lot of girls like it more with the hair flip. It’s such an honor to be here to support him.” “I’m honored to be getting my own wax figures,” Bieber previously said about joining fellow pop stars like Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers at Madame Tussauds. “To be immortalized in wax alongside some of my idols — Michael Jackson, Prince, Beyonc

Lady Gaga Salutes Town That Made Her ‘Brave’ At MSG

Gaga shouts out Liza Minnelli, Marisa Tomei and a gay unicorn in the second of two hometown shows. By Vaughn Schoonmaker Lady Gaga performs at Madison Square Garden on Sunday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage NEW YORK — “Tonight, in the town where the gays birthed me, you can be free!” Lady Gaga announced at her Monster Ball show Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. On this second night in her hometown, Lady Gaga was being filmed by HBO for her concert special that will air in early May. And though it wasn’t her first time playing MSG, she still felt the significance of headlining the venue. “I used to live 20 blocks from here, so I saw all those names go up on the marquis, and I always wanted to see my name up in those lights. “You made me brave, little monsters,” she informed her squealing fans of all ages, “and New York made me brave.” Liza Minnelli and Marisa Tomei were both in the audience, and Gaga asked for her monsters to cheer on the two women, who she said greatly influenced her. “I don’t lip-synch,” Gaga reminded the audience who was already quite aware of that impressive fact, considering all of the heavy dancing mixed with extended high notes. “I’m not going to waste your time watching some bitch lip-synch her way to an HBO special, especially not with Liza watching.” Gaga recently said in an interview that she would want Marisa Tomei, above anyone else, to play her in a movie. While performing all of her hits from The Fame and The Fame Monster, Gaga took plenty of time to speak to the crowd directly, and her witty banter had the room laughing every moment they weren’t cheering their lungs out. Someone in the audience held up a bright purple unicorn stuffed animal, and Gaga caught sight of it when flashing her disco stick flashlight around the crowd. “That is the most fabulous gay unicorn I have ever seen,” she remarked, as straight-faced as ever. “The only thing better than a unicorn is a gay unicorn.” The evening flowed seamlessly from the moment Gaga took the stage with her dark pop tune, “Dance in the Dark,” disguising her dozen or so costume changes with dazzling art videos. The videos often depicted Gaga in a pose or in extreme slow motion, creating the sense of a moving portrait, surrounded by driving club dance beats. Some of the images included tears of blood, neon-green vomit, gothic clothing and bondage attire. The show itself could be an installment at a high-end gallery. Gaga’s incessant devotion to LGBT rights was in full effect during her two hours on stage. She called a fan in the audience, Jimmy DiPasquale, who had made a generous donation to her LGBT youth fund, to thank him personally. At the end of “Alejandro,” while the beat continued to thump, two of her male backup dancers took the stage and made out passionately as the curtain came down. As Gaga drove the night toward her two encores of “Bad Romance” and new single “Born This Way,” she looked on the verge of tears and announced, “This is the last of five sold-out shows here, but I hope this song and this record bring us back here next year.” Related Photos Lady Gaga’s Madison Square Garden Performance Related Artists Lady Gaga

Trey Songz, Lloyd Melt Hearts In NYC: Six Sexy Moments

Headliner Trigger Trey kicked off his Love Faces mini-tour at Madison Square Garden on Friday night. By Rebecca Thomas Trey Songz Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Trey Songz bowed his Love Faces Tour on Friday night with a steamy, sold-out show in the Theater at Madison Square Garden. Lloyd, playing for the first time with a live band, warmed things up with an uptempo opening set. Whether you were cuffed up or on the prowl, it’s hard to imagine there was a better way to kick off a heart-racing Valentine’s Day weekend. Here, we re-live the evening’s six sexiest moments. Trey Twirls A Tender ‘Roni’ Back in 1989, Virginia-born Tremaine Neverson was a 5-year-old army brat, still years from ascending the Billboard charts under the nom de stage Trey Songz. Instead, another crooner known for flashing his granite-hard abs was ruling the airwaves: Bobby Brown. The ex-New Edition singer dropped the now-vintage video for “Roni” that year and it featured live-show footage of Brown — shirtless in silky “Hammer” pants and a heavy gold chain — going waist-to-gyrating waist with a swooning concertgoer. (“I guess this is why I got arrested, hunh?” he jokes to the audience.) On Friday, a woman named Simone became the envy of about 5,000 panting women as Songz, channeling the onetime King of R&B, pulled her from the crowd for an onstage dance to “Love Faces.” He removed her coat. He caressed her. His lips brushed her neck. Hearts exploded. Lloyd Lays it Down “New York is the most magic city in the world, and ain’t no girl like a New York girl,” Lloyd told the crowd before launching into his smash “Lay It Down,” the lead single from his March 22 LP, King of Hearts. The Polow Da Don-produced track may be one of the most flawlessly crafted pieces of bedroom music to be committed to MP3. Just hours before Friday’s show, MTV News asked Lloyd about the ecstatic, yodel-like vocal ad libs that form the song’s collision. The Atlanta-based crooner joked that he’d tapped his inner Scotsman and recorded that section while wearing a kilt. Whether Scottish, Swiss, Alps or ATL in origin, the vocal trick sent his lady fans (already on their feet and singing every lyric) into fits. Trey Covers ’90s Boy Band Burners Yes, fans were there to here Songz deliver catalog hits like “I Invented Sex” and “Neighbors Know My Name,” but his covers of Boyz II Men’s saccharine “I’ll Make Love to You” and Jodeci’s syrupy “Freek’N You” should be show staples. Hometown MC Cameos One of the perks of catching concerts at the World’s Most Famous Arena is that artists who make their nests in one of New York’s five boroughs occasionally pop up for surprise cameos. The inaugural show on the Love Faces mini-jaunt didn’t disappoint as Lloyd Banks joined Lloyd mid-set and Fabolous hit the stage for the homey Trey Songz. The G-Unit soldier trotted out his bouncy, Lloyd-featuring “Any Girl” before the New Orleans crooner fell back to play hype man as Banks ignited the crowd with the still-blazing “Beamer, Benz, or Bentley.” Loso, in a complementary smoking jacket (“I see your swag is right,” Trey smiled when the Brooklyn MC emerged onstage), ripped his “Say Aah” verse in a boozy knockout that was preceded by a thunderous rendition of “Bottoms Up.” Smoking Grooves For the second half of his show, the man with the velvety vibrato donned a dark, velvet smoking jacket, after opening up in a white ensemble that recalled Sinatra in his heyday. Simply put, Trey Songz knows how to suit up. (They don’t call him “Mr. Steal Your Girl” for nothing.) Make ‘Em Sweat Any girl who’s been on the receiving end of a stale Whitman’s Sampler or a wilted delicatessen bouquet knows that real romance is about the details. And Trey Songz, the performer, has honed his eye for detail. “There’s so much love right now everywhere I go,” he told MTV News during an interview a day before the show. If it comes across at times that he’s calculated the best moment to dab the perspiration from his forehead with a towel before tossing it into a squealing crowd, it’s no less effective. And when he asks for the house lights to be turned up so he can shout out a few beaming fans individually. (“I see you baby in the pink T-shirt”), the cost of admission seems priceless. Prince Keeps It Fresh At Welcome 2 America Show

At New York’s Madison Square Garden, the artist dug deep into his vault for two hours of hits. By Jem Aswad Prince (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Prince hasn’t had a hit single in more than 15 years and has gone even longer without a legitimate hit album. And at 52 — after all those years of splits, spins and pivots in high heels on hard stages — he can’t dance like he used to. But he can still sing and play guitar, he’s got a band as tightly drilled as the Special Forces, and most of all, he’s got a plush featherbed of hits. And that’s how he’s managed to fill five New York-area arena shows over the course of six weeks on his Welcome 2 America Tour : by promising — and finally delivering — the hits that his fans want. His show at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night was certainly a crowd-pleaser. See, Prince used to mess with his audience’s expectations so flagrantly, it verged on self-sabotage. He followed Purple Rain with the fan-confounding Around the World in a Day. He gave hits like “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Manic Monday” to other artists. During stadium concerts at the peak of his popularity, he’d play “Little Red Corvette” for 45 seconds and vamp on an unreleased song for eight minutes. Even his hit-driven 2004 tour was way too heavy on unspectacular, then-new songs. Tuesday night’s show had very little of that — although it did start off with him playing annoying snippets of those cherished hits like an obnoxious dude repeatedly hitting fast-forward on a CD. But after that, it was a lush, two-hour-long dive into his golden era. There were mega-hits (“Kiss,” “Take Me With U,” “Raspberry Beret,” “U Got the Look,” “Purple Rain,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “1999”); mezzanine hits (“Delirious,” “Controversy,” “Let’s Work,” “Anotherloverholenyohead,” “If I Was Your Girlfriend”); falsetto-dripping slow jams crammed together in the second encore (“Insatiable,” “Scandalous” and “Adore,” which are basically the same song); and a few curveballs for the die-hard fans (“She’s Always in My Hair,” plus two songs he wrote for others: Sheila E’s “A Love Bizarre” and the Time’s “Cool”). He didn’t play all of the songs in their entirety, but he played most of a lot of them. There were still a lot he left out: “When Doves Cry,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Diamonds and Pearls” and “When U Were Mine,” to name just a few. He hardly played anything from the past 15 years. And he’s still weird. He played the first half of the show wearing a shirt with his own face on it. He made two references to getting his picture taken even though the ushers individually warned audience members not to take any. He jumped on, lay on and even dry-humped the purple grand piano several times but played it for only about two minutes. He repeatedly held his mic to Maceo Parker’s saxophone, even though it had its own. He was nearly upstaged by a hapless stagehand who spent several minutes crawling around the stage, brushing off (by hand!) the purple confetti that earlier had rained down on the crowd. He brought a girl onstage from the audience and serenaded her tenderly with the bitter “I Love U, But I Don’t Trust U Anymore.” He heaped praise on opening act Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings but hurried them off the stage after they joined him for “A Love Bizarre.” Prince has promised to shuffle the set for every night of the tour, and while that kept things fresh, it did make for some uneven pacing. The band missed a couple of cues (prompting evil glares from their boss), and it’s hard to say if there were three or four encores, as the musicians followed Prince offstage at one point only to come back seconds later. But the energy peaked as the evening drew to a close. He brought a couple dozen audience members — including Jimmy Fallon, ?uestlove, Leighton Meester, Sharon Jones and a few Dap Kings — onstage for “Baby I’m a Star.” (Donald Trump and Madonna were also reportedly in the audience — Prince made an obscure joke about the latter.) And he milked the evening for all it was worth: The last encore saw the band roaring through “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Delirious” and “1999,” and at 10:55, as they were reaching the end of “Peach,” Prince pretended to look at his watch (going past 11 p.m. usually means overtime pay for venue staff at the artist’s expense), and launched into another three or so minutes of soloing. He then threw his Telecaster into the crowd, thanked New York one last time, and left the stage — this time, for good. Have you seen Prince in concert recently?
