Chris Brown hints at Justin Bieber collaboration

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Could a Chris Brown and Justin Bieber duet be debuting the near future? According to the older R&B/pop singer, the two have joined forces for a new song set to premiere early next year. Brown posted a note about the collaboration via Twitter on Christmas Day, writing, “ME and @justinbieber got a BANGER/SMASH record for all the fans out there at the top of the NEW YEAR!!! 2011 #BREEZYTAKEOVER” There’s been no official comment yet from Bieber’s camp about the collaboration, which would be Brown’s most high-profile yet since he plead guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Rihanna , in 2009. The scandal dealt a major blow to Brown’s career, though the singer has recently made inroads toward a comeback: his current single, “Yeah 3X,” is at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 . Brown also finished the domestic violence counseling sessions he was required to take as part of his sentencing for the assault, posting a photo of his certificate of completion on Twitter last week. Bieber, meanwhile, has been a fan of Brown’s since before his rise to fame. One of his most popular YouTube videos remains a cover of a Brown’s “With You” performed on acoustic guitar, a clip uploaded in February of 2008. It’s unclear whether the new pairing would for Brown’s next album or Bieber’s, which is already confirmed to include a musical partnering with country group Rascal Flatts . Michael Jackson Fans Celebrate Michael’s Release With DJ Cassidy

‘It was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson,’ Cassidy says at album-release party Monday night. By Steven Roberts Michael Jackson’s Michael Photo: Epic Records NEW YORK — Many a Michael Jackson fan lined up outside of the Roseland Ballroom on Monday night to celebrate the release of the King of Pop’s posthumous Michael album . Dozens of dancers and fans filled the ballroom’s floor, decked out in costumes inspired by MJ’s iconic looks from throughout his esteem career. One of those fans also happened to be the evening’s master of ceremonies, DJ Cassidy. “I’m here to make the fans dance,” he told MTV News. “I think that’s why Michael essentially made the music. He wanted to make people dance. He wanted to make people feel the emotion he felt, and I’m here to do just that. I’m here to help the fans in the celebration of the king.” Dressed in a leather suit with a pink shirt and socks, a red bowtie and shell-top Adidas, Cassidy said that he’s been a fan of Jackson for as long as he can remember. The late singer has been his inspiration in anything artistic in his life, from music to fashion. “So much of my fashion comes from Michael,” Cassidy explained. “So much of how I play music comes from how he formed his songs, how he created his sound that really inspired the way that I DJ. And really, it inspired me to want to be a DJ, to want to make people dance. “So, when I became a DJ at the age of 10, it was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson,” he added. “Tonight’s just a small way for me to really celebrate his music.” The party’s guests also included producers Teddy Riley, Eddie Cascio and Neff U, who each had a hand in producing Michael ‘s tracks. But before he began to spin for the night, Cassidy was thinking back to the classics, particularly his favorite party song, 1979’s “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” “You can be anywhere in the world, any city, any small town, any type of crowd, black, white, old, young, poor, rich, at any type of venue,” he said. “They could be wanting to hear house music, hip-hop music, anything in between, but ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ will turn that party out.” What’s your favorite Michael Jackson song? Ja Rule To Serve Two Years In Prison On Gun Charges

Rapper reaches plea deal for charges from arrest in July 2007. By Jayson Rodriguez Ja Rule (file) Photo: Mark Mainz/Getty Images NEW YORK — Ja Rule reached a plea deal with prosecutors in a Manhattan courtroom on Monday (December 13) that will see the rapper serve two years in prison. The charges stem from a gun bust in July 2007, when both Ja and Lil Wayne were arrested separately following a concert performance. The Murder Inc. star pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony in the second degree. “Minor setback for a major comeback,” Ja tweeted after reaching the deal. Ja Rule is expected to be sentenced in February, following a court appearance that same month to report his progress to the judge. The case originated just over three years ago, when Ja Rule joined Lil Wayne at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre to perform with the Cash Money superstar, who was headlining his first New York City bill. After the concert, both rappers, in separate instances, were pulled over in their vehicles by the New York Police Department. Both were subsequently charged with illegal possession of a firearm; Lil Wayne was also brought up on drug charges. In Ja Rule’s case, the rapper was one of three men in his car to be charged; all three were arraigned on the same charges. Police said they found a loaded semiautomatic weapon in the rear door of his car. If the Queens native had gone to trial and been found guilty, he could have faced up to seven years behind bars. Now, having reached a plea agreement, he’ll likely serve 16 months in prison, followed by a year and a half of post-prison supervision. Last year, Lil Wayne reached a plea deal in his case, and in March of this year, he turned himself in to begin his one-year sentence. Just last month, the New Orleans MC completed his sentence and is currently on probation for an unrelated incident in Arizona. Related Artists Ja Rule

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry Rock Jingle Ball

Madison Square Garden concert also featured Enrique Iglesias, B.o.B. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs at “Jingle Ball 2010” Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images NEW YORK — At 7:30 p.m. on the nose, the house lights went down, the girls went crazy, and Jingle Ball 2010 got the party started Friday (December 10) for a rousing night of music and fun at Madison Square Garden. Kim Kardashian, in a white body-hugging dress, kicked off the night’s festivities by noting that it was her first time ever at MSG, then bringing Taio Cruz to the stage. He played “Break Your Heart” and “Dynamite,” and for his track “Higher,” he was joined by Travie McCoy, though the song usually features British pop princess Kylie Minogue. Jesse McCartney was on hand to proudly invite Bruno Mars to the stage. The Grammy nominee played drums for an excited crowd. He played “Billionaire,” and the entire room sang along as McCoy joined him for their ode to getting famous. The crowd ate it up. He then slowed it down with “Grenade.” The set ended with “Just the Way You Are” to the delight of the crowd. Jay Sean beat-boxed, then helped introduce Paramore to the stage. The band brought some loud, boombastic rock to the show thanks to a set that included “Brick by Boring Brick.” “Anybody else care to join the party tonight?” frontwoman Hayley Williams asked the crowd before blaring out “Misery” and inviting a fan onstage to sing with her. They finished it off with “The Only Exception.” B.o.B was next to the stage. The rapper got real with his track “Don’t Let Me Fall.” Then the crowd went insane for “Magic.” As if that didn’t get the girls hyped enough, Bruno Mars returned for “Beautiful Girls.” “Everybody put your hands up,” B.o.B told the crowd before playing his massive “Airplanes” with Williams by his side. The crowd went nuts when Flo Rida introduced Selena Gomez for her dance-tastic performance of “Round and Round.” Gomez looked like a true disco queen in her little black dress and heels. She thanked Katy Perry for her next track, “Rock God,” then got trancey for her song “A Year Without Rain,” and ended her set with “Naturally,” crediting it as the reason she got a spot on the radio tour. The show took an adult contemporary and old school turn when Michael Buble arrived to croon tunes such as “Hollywood” and “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and for “Let it Snow,” he got in the crowd and paid homage to the season, dusting MSG with snow confetti. Katy Perry brought the girl power in her performance, which featured ballerinas, Christmas trees, Santa Clauses and Perry popping out of a gift box in a latex toy soldier costume for “Hot n Cold.” “This is Madison Square Garden!” she shouted to the crowd. “This is something I’ve dreamt about for a long time.” “This next song is about falling in love with a foreigner, like far away … Not even in England,” she said to introduce “E.T.” After a jazzy version of “I Kissed a Girl,” she proudly proclaimed, “Let’s dedicate this West Coast anthem to the East Coast right now,” ending her performance with “California Gurls” as red and green confetti fell from the ceiling. Pauly D prompted the loudest screams of the night when he introduced Enrique Iglesias. The Latin pop star played the clean version of “Tonight,” followed by older jams such as “Escape” and “Hero,” serenading a girl from the audience. With the swooning complete, Iglesias ended with fan favorite “I Like It.” Kardashian returned, telling the crowd, “I think I’m catching a fever,” before the night’s most-anticipated performance: Justin Bieber. In a plaid top and khakis, the teen star got his party started with “Somebody to Love.” Bieber was in full swagga mode, dancing like a seasoned pro and getting the crowd hyped. “The last time I was here for Jingle Ball, I had a broken foot, and this year, I’m here and both my limbs are working,” he joked. “We shot a movie here, and it’s coming out in February, and I think we should show you a preview.” The trailer transitioned to “Never Say Never.” Bieber even brought out a surprise guest, Jayden Smith, to join him. “I had someone who’s really special to me, and I decided to bring him out,” he then announced, calling for Sean Kingston for “Eenie Meenie.” The girls went crazy as the pals went back and forth on the cut. “I think I want to slow it down a little bit. My acoustic album had an extra song on it that’s really important to me. But first, I need everyone to close their eyes and ‘Pray,’ ” he said before the inspirational ballad. He then teased the excited crowd, saying, “I think we should do one more song,” and listing some of his track names. He settled on “Baby.” “Who wants to be my baby?” he asked. He ended the night with showers of fireworks and confetti, saying, “You guys are amazing.” Did you go to Jingle Ball 2010? Give us your review in the comments below! Cake Hang Out With Fans And Microphones In New York

Sacramento rockers build anticipation for new album, Showroom of Compassion, at Irving Plaza. By Sabrina Rojas Weiss Cake’s John McCrea and Xan McCurdy perform in New York on Tuesday Photo: Joey Foley/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Cake are the kind of band it’s easy to think you know well — songs like “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” and their “I Will Survive” cover still pop up regularly in ads and soundtracks — and easy to love for their blend of regular-guy sound with clever lyrics and off-beat instrumentation. But in concert, anyone who, say, owns only four of their albums, will never be mistaken for a diehard. No, the superfans know every single word of every early album deep cut. Still, when the cult faves hit Irving Plaza on Tuesday night, frontman John McCrea made sure everyone felt like they belonged. Dressed in a fedora, T-shirt, hoodie and rugged jacket, the bearded McCrea looked like a buddy you’d just invited over for a beer in your Brooklyn living room. After kicking off the show with 2001’s “Comfort Eagle” and a couple of tracks from their upcoming new album, Showroom of Compassion, the singer launched into a deadpan banter that really made it feel like he was everyone’s friend too. “We are just hanging out together, with the tree and microphones,” McCrea said, pointing to the small evergreen onstage that he later gave away to an audience member — part of an old Cake concert tradition. When one fan got a little too comfortable with the band and threw a paper airplane missive at the stage, McCrea gently reminded her, “I can’t really read long notes right now; I’m kind of playing a show.” Mixed in with several of the new Compassion songs — which stick to the trademark Cake sound of head-nodding rhythm, nasally guitar and Vince DeFiore’s brilliant trumpet solos, occasionally punctuated by McCrea on the vibraslap — were a whole lot of the favorites. The pleasantly small, sold-out venue was filled with the sound of fans singing along with the likes of “Frank Sinatra,” “Say It All” and “Friend Is a Four Letter Word.” “Congratulations to all of you singing along, you just got the equivalent of a beer from endorphins,” McCrea said after a rousing rendition of “Sheep Go to Heaven.” And they weren’t just singing with the classics. During the encore, following their cover of “War Pigs,” when the band at last performed new single “I’m So Sick of You,” McCrea began directing everyone as a choir. One side of the room was the “escapists,” who sang “I want to fly away,” while the other side was instructed to chant “I’m so sick of you, so sick of me, I don’t want to be with you.” It was an instant favorite of the happy crowd, but the show’s closer, their 1996 hit “The Distance,” was perfectly calculated to send everyone home humming and smiling. Showroom of Compassion, Cake’s first studio album in six years, is due out on January 11. Related Artists Cake

Emma Stone Is The Actress We’re Most Thankful For In 2010

With winning turn in ‘Easy A,’ ‘Spider-Man’ casting and ‘SNL’ hosting gig, the 22-year-old has had quite a year. By Eric Ditzian Emma Stone Photo: Fotonoticias/Getty Images As MTV News’ Thankful Week draws to a close, we begin to cast our gaze away from the big screen and towards tables soon to be the scene of turkey-crazed feasts. But we have one last honor to bestow: the actress we’re most thankful for in 2010. The winner is none other than Emma Stone, a move that completes a nifty “Spider-Man” double win, as we also honored Andrew Garfield — who’s stepping into the role of Peter Parker — as the actor we’re most thankful for this year. Stone won the part of Gwen Stacy in October, capping a stellar year for the 22-year-old. From the top-notch teenage rom-com “Easy A” to her “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig to the opportunity to shoot flicks opposite the likes of Steve Carell (“Crazy, Stupid, Love”) and Justin Timberlake (“Friends With Benefits”), Stone was already having a great 2010. Then “Spider-Man” director Marc Webb came calling. Her life is never going to be the same — and she couldn’t be more excited. The always-energetic actress called up MTV News in the midst of “Spider-Man” preproduction to talk about what a surreal year it’s been and how she’s dealing with the pressures of taking on the iconic Marvel series. MTV : Thanks for calling up to chat. Emma Stone : Thank you for having me! MTV : Well, you’re going to be very excited in a second. Stone : What is it? What’s it going to be? You like how I’m excited at the mere mention that I’m going to be excited? MTV : Uh-oh, I really have to come through now. Look out your window — there’s a blimp with your face on it! Stone : Oh my god, it’s so beautiful, I’m looking right now! You wanna know what’s really insane about that? I actually pulled back the curtain and looked at the sky. MTV : I’m sorry to disappoint, but I can tell you that every year we honor various people we’re thankful for, and this year you’re the woman we’re most thankful for. Stone : Oh my god, shut up! Get out of here! I prepared a 10-minute speech, is that OK? MTV : I’m afraid we don’t have enough time. You know, the man we’re most thankful for this year is your “Spider-Man” co-star Andrew Garfield. Stone : Hey, I know that guy! We’ve met. He’s the worst! MTV : I won’t tell him you said that. It has been quite a year for you. “Easy A” gets a great reaction, you’re shooting movies with people like Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling, you host “Saturday Night Live,” and then you land “Spider-Man.” Does 2010 feel like a landmark year? Stone : It feels kind of scary saying this because that means it’s only downhill, but it’s been the best year of my life. Not just with how lucky I’ve been work-wise, but with my family and friends. I’m totally terrified for 2011. I have such a disaster mentality, it’s not even funny. MTV : Which raises the question, are you ready for something as big as “Spider-Man”? Can you ever be ready for something like that? Stone : The way I have to approach it, and I think Andrew would agree, is just like any other movie. You’re going to put the same amount of focus into this that you would with anything. It just happens to be an exponentially bigger budget. So there’s that. It’ll probably feel different when we start to do press, but we won’t have to deal with that for another year and a half. And there are harnesses I’m going to have to use in this one. That’s the only difference: just the harnesses. MTV : Seriously, though, it’s been quite a year for you with onscreen love interests. The women in the office are jealous — Penn Badgley, Timberlake, Gosling, Garfield. You’re a lucky woman … Stone : What can I say? You cannot compare them. They are so wonderful in their own ways. Again, it’s been an amazing year. MTV : Has there been one surreal point in particular that kind of encapsulates 2010 for you? Stone : Hosting “Saturday Night Live.” That’s always been my ultimate dream. That moment before you come out those doors when Don Pardo says your name and you’re standing there … I had never let myself imagine what that would feel like. That moment when you walk through those doors was probably the most surreal moment, not just of this year, but ever. MTV : So you guys are in rehearsals for “Spider-Man,” right? What is that process like at this point? Stone : Today I went and did hair tests, because I have blonde hair now since Gwen has blonde hair. My natural hair is blonde, so it’s kind of nice. I looked in the mirror and said, “Oh my god, it’s me again, it’s been so long!” We’re finalizing the visual stuff. And I think we’ll start actually rehearsing, because we start shooting in two weeks. Andrew and I went and learned about science yesterday. Gwen really likes science, so we learned about science. I was homeschooled, so I never went to chemistry class in a traditional setting like Gwen is into. That was really beneficial. MTV : There seemed to be so much competition for the role of Gwen Stacy. Do you ever think, “Why me?” What do you think won you the part? Stone : I ask myself that question every day. I have no f—ing idea. It’s the most amazing idea, I can’t even tell you. I don’t think I ever will figure out how it happened. It’s been mind-blowing. I know things will eventually change, so I’m just trying to avoid thinking about it and just enjoy it while it’s happening. Ugh, what am I even saying? Don’t write any of that down! Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long. Kings Of Leon Turn Madison Square Garden ‘Radioactive’

The boys from Tennessee declared the New York venue their new home court on Tuesday night. By Jenny McCoy Kings of Leon’s Caleb Followill performs at Madison Square Garden Tuesday Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images NEW YORK — With red smoke, a clean, metallic set and a crowd as varied as their albums, the Kings of Leon launched into a 22-song set at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night with “Mary,” a song from their new album, Come Around Sundown. The Kings then took a very full (thought not quite sold-out) crowd on a two-song trip back to earlier times with “Crawl” and “Molly’s Chambers” before crooning this summer’s single, “Radioactive,” a song that sounds perfect for in the arena. From there, they continued to weave the best of their raw beginnings, sing-a-long hits from the hugely successful Only by the Night and new tracks from Sundown. The crowd was a mix of 30-something professionals, 20-something drinkers and the occasional flannel, and KOL’s song choices was made to please every variation of fan. While some commuters filtered out before the show’s end, most stayed on until the very end. After recording their album in New York City, the boys from Tennessee declared the Garden their new home court. “The first time we played here, we were the opening band. It feels good not to be the opening band tonight,” frontman Caleb Followill told the crowd. “Now that we’ve spent more time in this beautiful city, it means a lot more to us.” The Followill brothers and cousin took a couple minutes to announce a couple of very special guests: their moms. “Just want to say how wonderful it is to have our moms here tonight — the two prettiest women in the world,” Caleb announced before playing the fittingly titled “Back Down South.” KOL wrapped the show with “Use Somebody,” inspiring the crowd to use their best shower-singing voices and sway like they were at a seventh-grade dance. But the energy was turned up again for the encore — “Be Somebody,” “Sex on Fire” and “Black Thumbnail” — when the band said goodbye with a pyrotechnics show.
