Jessica Biel Recalls ‘Intense’ ‘Summit On The Summit’ Climb

Actress says Mount Kilimanjaro ‘was like this mysterious, foreboding, ominous woman.’ By James Montgomery Jessica Biel Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — While climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, as part of Kenna’s “Summit on the Summit” mission, Jessica Biel got to know the 19,000-odd feet of rock pretty well. In fact, she’s pretty sure the mountain is actually a woman. “She was like this mysterious, foreboding, ominous woman. And she was hidden almost all day long, and just when you were unmotivated, and feeling like crap and uninspired and thinking, ‘What am I doing here?’ the clouds would part and she would peek out, and the beauty would strike you, and then you’d be inspired again,” Biel told MTV News on the red carpet for the premiere of “Summit.” “And she was literally, like, this woman who would pull this veil over her face and disappear, and then she’d show a little bit of herself, and then she’d disappear again. It was kind of this running joke, but I really felt that way. I felt like, ‘I respect you. Please let me get up, please. ‘ ” But just because Kilimanjaro was inspiring doesn’t mean she also couldn’t be positively dominating too. In the film — which debuts Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV — Biel and her fellow climbers (a team that also featured Lupe Fiasco, Santigold, Emile Hirsch and a team of scientists, United Nations ambassadors and experienced mountain guides) were brutalized by freezing rain and snow, gashed and twisted on stones and dizzied by the rapidly thinning atmospheric conditions. But that was just the physical trauma. The real challenge, for Biel at least, was overcoming the mental aspects of scaling the peak. “It was a combination of the mental and the psychological aspects of the mountain, of the slow-but-steady pace that you had to go up it, and that sometimes made your brain just want to explode, because you just wanted to get there so badly,” she said. “And then you couldn’t see anything at night, when we were doing our ascent attempt, and you start thinking that it would never end and you’d start to think, ‘Why am I here? This is miserable!’ “But then you’d get this rush of inspiration of ‘I’m not doing this for me. I’m doing this for something bigger than me, for people who don’t have a voice, for people that need water around the world,’ and then you’d power through,” she continued. “Your mind started to play tricks on you. And then, with the altitude, you just felt so strange. You didn’t know why you were lethargic, you didn’t know why you were so tired. It was an intense experience.” And that bigger goal was to raise awareness about the global clean-water crisis , a problem much bigger than any mountain. But Biel was inspired, not just by her trip to the top of the world, but by the larger message the mission carries: that together, people can conquer even the most insurmountable of challenges. “That’s a part of all movements. One voice is something, but a group of voices can change the world. All grassroots movements started that way, and with the Internet and people following us and watching our ascent, it really feels like people were excited by what we were doing and hopefully were inspired to create challenges for themselves, whatever that may be, and for whatever cause that may be,” Biel said. “To get involved with their community, or pick something around the world that they care about, that they feel they should stand up for. That was the idea behind this. Kenna wasn’t going to stop, because he had this group of friends behind him, who were supporting him. And I wasn’t going to stop, because I wanted to be there for Kenna, and I didn’t want to take the group down. It was such a group mentality, and I don’t think we could’ve done it without everyone being there, and 100-percent ready for the challenge.” Don’t miss “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. Lil Wayne Sentenced To A Year In Prison

After multiple sentencing delays, the rapper turns himself in to begin his jail term. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne (file) Photo: Louis Lanzano/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Lil Wayne turned himself in to authorities Monday (March 8) after multiple sentencing delays for a July 2007 gun-possession charge. A near riot broke out in front of the Manhattan Criminal Court Building when the superstar MC entered, escorted by police and his Cash Money crew. Photographers aggressively angled to capture the last images of the rapper before he was formally sentenced to one year in prison. Dressed in black jeans, a black shirt and a gray jacket, Lil Wayne made his way in, before Judge Charles H. Solomon sentenced the rapper. The New Orleans native sat next to his lawyer, Stacey Richman, without addressing the court. After Solomon reminded Wayne of his charges, the rapper firmly nodded that he understood. Police then handcuffed Lil Wayne and he stood up to be taken away. He paused momentarily before leaving and nodded to Cash Money execs Birdman and Slim, who were present in the courtroom. Just like that, Wayne was gone. The rapper reached a deal with prosecutors in November to plead out to a lesser deal, and in return, he is expected to be released from prison as early as October. In 2007, Lil Wayne was arrested for attempted gun possession following his first headlining performance in Manhattan at the Beacon Theatre. New York is among the toughest states in the country when it comes to gun-possession laws. In other states, Lil Wayne could have gotten off with a misdemeanor rap and probation. However, in New York, only law-enforcement officials and those affiliated with authorities are permitted to carry firearms. Jay-Z Feels The Hometown Love At Madison Square Garden Show

Jay gets some help from Young Jeezy, Trey Songz, Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj and other special guests. By Shaheem Reid Jay-Z performs at Madison Square Garden Tuesday Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images NEW YORK — There is always palpable exhilaration whenever Jay-Z plays Madison Square Garden. Tuesday night (March 2) was another sold-out show at MSG as Hov’s Blueprint 3 Tour arrived in town. After Trey Songz played up to the ladies with his set, there was a short intermission. Like lightning — boom! The Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” video began playing on two big screens that hung over the stage, and a 10-minute countdown began perfectly in sync with the classic hip-hop track. Hova chants started several minutes prior to that. Finally, with no time left on the clock, Jay’s music began. He was greeted with a deafening roar of approval. “Feel it coming in the air,” Rihanna’s recorded voice from “Run This Town” blasted through the arena. Jay rose from underneath the stage, rolling his head around his shoulders like a young Mike Tyson getting ready for a prize fight. Jay, like Tyson in the ’80s knows he’s a dominant force in any ring, any arena, but especially at the Garden, he’s unstoppable. Jay then brought out Memphis Bleek and told his former neighbor in the Marcy Projects he wanted him to see something special. Like a wizard, Jigga waved his hand around the arena and made fans scream. “I wanna be careful how I phrase this, because it’s one of my heroes,” Jay said. “Madison Square Garden used to be Run’s House. But ‘Run’s House’ is now on MTV. Madison Square Garden is now ‘The House That Hov Built.’ ” His assertion was backed up with triumphant showings of “On to the Next One,” “U Don’t Know,” “99 Problems” and “Show Me What You Got.” “Empire State of Mind” felt special in the Garden. Jay’s performance of the record filled the arena with hometown pride. It’s the closest feeling the crowd at the Garden will get to the Knicks winning the championship … at least until LeBron James signs with the team next year (fingers crossed). James was in attendance, along with his Cleveland Cavaliers teammate Shaquille O’Neal, Rick Ross, Gwyneth Paltrow, Diddy and Cash Money Records CEO the Birdman. Birdman was on hand to cheer on his “son” Lil Wayne. Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj had the show-stealing moment as part of Young Jeezy’s set. The Snowman also brought out Akon. Jeezy came out about 40 minutes into Jay’s show, and the two did “Real as It Gets” from Blueprint 3. After handing Jeezy the keys to MSG for a while, Jay came back and traded rhymes with his Southern partner on the remixes of “Put On” and “My President.” Trey Songz came out with Jay as well to help out on “Heart of the City” and “Already Home.” The Blueprint 3 Tour stopped with an “overtime” session that saw Jay take his fans back as far as the Reasonable Doubt days with “Ain’t No N—a” and “Can I Live.” “Am I going too far back? This moment is only for us,” he added of himself and fans of his first LP. Hov then brought it up a few years for “Big Pimpin’,” with Jay urging everyone to wave whatever they had from rags to bandanas to hats in the air, Carnivale-style. “I don’t take it for granted,” Jay said of the fan love. “I appreciate everyone in the building tonight. Thank you, and I hope we return the love tenfold. The legendary MC then asked to do one more record: “Encore.” Hov is going to be in the Tri-State Area with a few shows during these next two weeks. He plays Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel as well as the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island next week. John Mayer Thanks Fans For ‘Believing’ In Him At NYC Concert

‘It’s a clean me now, people, clean me,’ he tells Madison Square Garden crowd weeks after controversial Playboy comments. By Dana Kasser John Mayer performs at Madison Square Garden Thursday Photo: Alyssa Scheinson / Splash News NEW YORK — The fans at Madison Square Garden didn’t let a little snow keep them from John Mayer’s sold-out concert on Thursday night (February 25). Mayer has also had some adversity come his way over the past few weeks, after the backlash from his controversial comments in Playboy magazine . Mayer took a moment onstage to thank his fans for believing in him through the uproar. “I hate to come off like an a–hole ever, and thank you guys for believing that I am not an a–hole,” he told the crowd. “Never, ever in my entire life did I ever think that it would be a good idea to be an a–hole. But you know what? There’s plenty of a–holes who think the same thing, so I have to thank you.” Mayer said he’s ready for a fresh start: “It’s a clean me now, people, clean me.” When Mayer wasn’t thanking his fans for braving the elements, he and his five-piece band were rocking out the stage to a set list of songs from his current album, Battle Studies, as well as hits from his past, including “Waiting on the World to Change” and “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” He even succumbed to a section of cheering fans calling out for him to perform “City Love” from his breakthrough 2001 album, Room for Squares. Even if the public isn’t convinced by his numerous apologies , Mayer had the Madison Square Garden concertgoers on their feet from show-opener “Heartbreak Warfare” to his encore — snow boots and all. The singer/songwriter even checked in with the crowd on Twitter after the show: “MSG crowd, will you tweet me when you get home safe? It’s bad out. Oh and HOLY SHNIKES. You were unreal tonight.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: John Mayer Related Artists John Mayer

LMFAO’s Sky Blu Says Mitt Romney ‘Vulcan-Gripped’ Him On Airplane

‘What I did was a Vulcan-grip countermove,’ he says of his altercation with the Massachusetts governor. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway LMFAO Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — LMFAO’s Sky Blu isn’t a violent person; he’s a partyer. But when former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney placed a “Vulcan grip” on him, he said he physically struck back because he was in the heat of the moment. “I look at the man, like, ‘Are you serious?’ And then, boom, Vulcan grip comes out on my shoulder,” Sky Blu told MTV News about the incident. “He Vulcan-gripped me real quick. The man was sitting here and said, ‘Sir, put your seat up,’ and, pow, and what I did was a Vulcan-grip countermove. I learned this when I was a youngster. Bam, forehead.” So Sky Blu actually hit Romney in the face? “Oh, yeah, I got him,” he said. “I went upside his head one time. That was the reaction when you touch me, especially during a heated exchange, I’m gonna have to rearrange your forehead piece.” Sky Blu and his musical partner Redfoo made headlines last week when word broke that LMFAO were involved in a skirmish with Romney. The Massachusetts governor reportedly was upset when Sky Blu reclined his seat into the passenger behind him before the flight took off. Romney’s wife was the one seated behind Sky Blu, he said, but she didn’t voice any displeasure until the conflict occurred. Sky said he barely reclined his seat. Although the LMFAO guys joked that they were saints that morning who helped “little old ladies cross the street,” Sky Blu said Mitt Romney was pleasant afterward. He just didn’t appreciate Romney’s approach, let alone being grabbed by him. “First of all, that’s too hard-core for the first talk,” Sky said. “For the break-the-ice, that’s too hard-core — especially if you’re not a flight attendant.” Related Artists Lmfao

Ludacris Says He And Tiger Woods Should Talk

‘Let’s go play some golf and talk about it,’ Atlanta MC says. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Ludacris and Sway Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Ludacris poked fun at Tiger Woods’ sex scandal on the intro to his new track “Sexting” from his forthcoming Battle of the Sexes album (due March 9), intimidating the embattled golf star’s frantic voice mail to one of his alleged mistresses. But the Atlanta rapper said there are no hard feelings behind the jab. “If I’m making fun of Tiger Woods, I’m also making fun of myself,” Luda told MTV News from Madison Square Garden before he took the stage Wednesday (February 24). On the Neptunes-produced song, “Sexting,” Luda raps about his own tale of sex addiction. “My girl went through my cell phone,” he spits, explaining how he got caught. Throughout the track, the Luda-as-Tiger voice mail plays. Luda said the track is only a reflection of reality. “This is what happens,” he explained of the inspiration behind the song. “So I’m just bringing to light what’s really going on in the world .” So, does Luda have a take on Tiger’s message to his mistress? “It’s very entertaining,” he laughed. “And I do feel as though he may have handled it wrong.” Ludacris, however, said he’d offer Tiger some advice — especially if the golf legend feels slighted by song. “I would say, ‘Let’s go play some golf and talk about it,’ ” he offered. “I take that back — I’d say, ‘Let’s go to the sex-rehab place together and let’s discuss it. Let me know where your sex-rehab place is and I’ll let you know where mine is. We got some things to get off our chest.’ Related Artists Ludacris

Capone-N-Noreaga Revisit The War Report Before Recording Sequel

Busta Rhymes urged the duo to listen to the original, even though they had avoided it for years. Capone-N-Noreaga Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Thanks to Busta Rhymes, Capone-N-Noreaga had to face the music. The Queens duo, friends for more than 20 years, decided they would make a sequel to their classic debut, The War Report, late last year. Upon hearing of the re-up, Busta — who guest-starred on the original album — called the group and told them before they went into production on part two, they had to listen to part one. “I’mma be honest: For years, I could never listen to The War Report, ” N.O.R.E. told MTV News. “It wasn’t because I wasn’t proud of it; it just brought up so much pain and so much hurt. To listen to it, I used to tear up. I used to think about Capone when he was gone [in jail]. I didn’t just lose a partner, I lost a best friend. It’s like not being able to use your right hand. When I listen to The War Report, it’s bugged out. I’m talking about years of not being able to listen to The War Report. When Busta said that, it was almost, like, painful: ‘Damn! I got to?’ But when I did it, I knew exactly what he was talking about. I had to go back into that style. It’s beyond the music; it’s the feeling, the tension that was built around it. We luckily captured it [on the new album].” Noreaga’s other half, Capone, also has his horror stories from the time the first War Report was made. “I really didn’t listen to the War Report album for a long time too,” Capone said. ” The War Report was a long time for me. Besides what he was going through and what I was going through, it was a lot of family stuff — losing my mother, getting shot. … During War Report, I had to go to jail. I was on the clock. I was on the studio-time clock and the judge clock. Every day, knowing I was getting closer and closer to going to jail, you feel like, ‘Why am I doing this? I’m about to go to jail. Nothing is promised to me. Why am I recording this?’ “Certain songs I sit back and listen and be like, ‘I gave 60 percent effort there. I gave 80 percent effort there. Damn, I could remember that day. I had to go to the hospital to get my bandage checked,’ ” Capone added. “I really didn’t like listening to War Report until Busta … gave us that talk. Like, ‘You have to. You have to.’ ” “I wanted Bus back as a fan,” Noreaga added. “I love when Bus calls: ‘Yo, you blacked on that Jay Electronica joint.’ I wasn’t getting those calls for a while.” The War Report 2 is slated for a June 15 release to coincide with the anniversary of the original. The first War Report came out June 17, 1997. Meanwhile, C-N-N just released a new single, “Thug Planet,” with Iman Thug. Related Artists Capone-N-Noreaga
