What to Expect When You’re Expecting Trailer: What Did You Expect?

Just when you thought that a movie could not accommodate more stars and subplots than tomorrow’s Garry Marshall-directed New Year’s Eve , Lionsgate has unveiled the trailer for What to Expect When You’re Expecting . The film, an adaptation of the popular ’80s pregnancy guide, packs Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Cameron Diaz, Matthew Morrison, Anna Kendrick, Chris Rock, Thomas Lennon, Dennis Quaid, Wendi McLendon-Covey, the hot Brazilian from Love Actually and more actors into a sprawling tale of hormonal outbursts, catty jealousy, dads unafraid to wear Baby Björns and infants. Lots and lots of infants. Judge the trailer for yourself below.

REVIEW: Theron, Reitman and Cody Combine For Stark, Sublime Young Adult

I don’t pretend to be a feminist or even understand feminism beyond accepting the fundamental concept of gender equality. That has always seemed straightforward enough, despite the vagaries and complications evident in myriad cultural examples from Michele Bachmann to Margaret Cho to Diablo Cody, the stripper-turned-scribe whose three produced screenplays to date — Juno , Jennifer’s Body and this week’s Young Adult — make up some of contemporary cinema’s rangier ruminations on feminism. Or at least what I think is feminism.

REVIEW: Gary Oldman Sneaks Off with One of the Year’s Great Performances in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Some movies come directly to you, begging for your attention if not demanding it outright. And other movies sit still and quiet even as they hold out a hand, beckoning you closer until you’ve been drawn in almost in spite of yourself. Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor, Soldier, Spy , an adaptation of John Le Carré’s 1974 novel, is the latter type.

In Honor of Young Adult, the 10 Classic Types of Lady Tantrums in Movies

This red-band promo clip of Young Adult indicates that Mavis Gary’s (Charlize Theron) confrontation with Beth Slade (Elizabeth Reaser) will be mean, profane and pretty embarrassing for both characters. According to my calculations, that’s a level-four tantrum in the “angry lady” cinematic universe. Young Adult opens in limited release this week, and to celebrate, let’s counting down 10 classic types of female conniptions in film. Everyone from Ellen Ripley to Joan Crawford is accounted for — but who’s the grande dame of femme freakouts?

Watch Charlize Theron Become Enraged in Young Adult Red Band Spot

Charlize Theron said recently that she took a four-year break from acting to work with her production company, so it’s interesting to consider what about Young Adult (besides the Oscar-friendly duo of Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody) would drag her back into the craft. Here’s an idea: She gets to be profane, uncompromising, and really, really pissed off. In this red-band spot for the new film (out December 9), Theron loses her shit with Elizabeth Reaser, who plays her ex-beau’s (Patrick Wilson) new wife. Yikes.

Charlize Theron Covers Vogue, Talks Single Life, Looks Very Attractive

Charlize Theron is featured in the latest Vogue , talking to the magazine about her new movie and her love life and… some other stuff. We assume, at least. We were too busy remembering how wonderfully evil she looks as the queen in the Snow White and the Huntsman trailer , then staring at the actress’ gorgeous cover photo to pay much attention. You can’t really blame us, can you? Below, we’ve posted excerpts from Theron’s interview: On winning an Academy Awards : “It was life-changing – it opened a lot of doors. But it made people have a lot of opinions about what should happen next. You realize quickly that you can never please everybody.” On filming Young Adult : “I realized how much I love what I do. I really, really missed it. Like around week three, I had this horrible, sappy moment where I got a little overwhelmed. It was just a really great f-cking experience.” On her splitting with Stuart Townsend : “It was sinking, and I had to give it a fight. I really wanted to try and make it work. That was the priority. I wouldn’t do it any different way.”

Henry Cavill on Immortals, Man of Steel, Surviving Tough Times and Inspiring Twilight’s Edward Cullen

Much has been made of British actor Henry Cavill ‘s abs in this week’s Immortals , or the strange, logic-defying Superman beard spied on the set of Man of Steel . Never mind that the 28-year-old actor turns in a persuasive dramatic performance in Tarsem ‘s stylized fantasy myth, playing the classic hero Theseus as an honorable peasant battling a sadistic god-hating tyrant (Mickey Rourke) with the aid of a comely priestess (Freida Pinto) and supernatural bow and arrows. But therein lies the surprise: Go to Immortals for the bloody action, or the mythological spin, or the wonderment of Tarsem’s visuals, and you’ll also get the pleasant revelation that Cavill wears leading man status like a natural.
