Here’s what I’ve gathered from the new Snow White and the Huntsman trailer: Charlize Theron ‘s Evil Queen is pissed, Kristen Stewart ‘s Snow White is innocent, and the color saturation of this fairytale world looks like a Crayola-dappled Middle Earth. Pretty spectacular.
Kenneth Lonergan has finally finished Margaret , his long, long, long delayed follow-up to You Can Count on Me , which stars Anna Paquin as a flirtatious teen who may or may not have caused a fatal bus accident. Allison Janney, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo and Matthew Broderick (who reportedly fronted Lonergan $1 million to finish the project) co-star. Let’s take a look at the trailer for the drama and decide whether it was worth the six-year wait.
Diablo Cody has her own movie to anticipate with the release of her third feature Young Adult this December (featuring a thoroughly unamused Charlize Theron ), but the Academy Award winner took time out tell Movieline which three films she most looks forward to seeing. What will make the cut? The Iron Lady ? Carnage ? A Dangerous Method ? Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip Wrecked ? Click through for her adroit (and quite cheeky) observations.
If Sean Penn didn’t love the abstract narrative Terrence Malick employed in Tree of Life , maybe he’ll dig the pretty-similar, much more conventional stuff in the long-delayed Fireflies in the Garden — a Tree of Life Lite starring Ryan Reynolds as a middle-aged man who returns to his Texas childhood home to deal with his strained relationship with his stern father (Willem Dafoe). Period flashbacks, memories of an angelic mother (Julia Roberts), and a pivotal death that inspires exploration into deep emotional scars? The only things missing are the cosmic clouds of particles laden with meaning. Would Penn approve?
Looks like Spike Lee got his rumored dream star for the Oldboy film he’s helming: Deadline reports that Josh Brolin will lead the English-language remake of Park Chan-wook’s 2003 thriller about a man held prisoner for 15 years who sets out for revenge upon release. With Brolin onboard, will Christian Bale sign on next as his mysterious foil? (And how faithful will Lee’s remake be to the brutality of the original?)
What’s a girl got to do to find a decent movie around here? Usually, wait until the summer — a season full of big budget action blockbusters, male-targeted comedies and easy paycheck franchise extensions — ends, and the movie posters change color with the leaves. Fortunately, Movieline has just the guide to make the seasonal cinema transition a little easier.
Why let your freak flag fly when you can buy an official Glee T-shirt or hoodie (priced from $19.99-$34.99) at Macy’s with your friends? The partnership between the retail giant and Fox launches this weekend in over 600 stores with Glee -themed window displays. Even though the cast of the Emmy-nominated hit was banned from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade last year, cast members Kevin McHale, Heather Morris and Jenna Ushkowitz will be on hand Aug. 21 at the Beverly Center location to sign your new apparel. Matthew Morrison’s relatively low-paying contract probably does not stipulate shopping-mall appearances. [ NYT ]
Young Adult is already lining itself up as a major Oscar 2012 contender before a frame of film is shot: It’s written by Diablo Cody, will be directed by Jason Reitman and currently has Charlize Theron attached in the lead role, a 30-something writer who returns to her hometown to stalk an ex-boyfriend. And who might that boyfriend be? Try Josh Brolin. According to Roger Friedman (salt grain), the Oscar-nominee is circling the project. Yes, please. [ Showbiz 411 ]
