Lessons From Chloe & Maud: The Tap Duo Explains How Beyoncé & Debbie Allen Helped Boost Their Success

Source: Photo by @photosbynae / iOne Digital Chloe and Maud Arnold are women of many talents. The two sisters, who are six years apart, are probably most known for their tap dancing and choreography. Together, they perform with their all-women tap dance group Syncopated Ladies and they perform as a duo, doing workshops and performances around the world. Their tap dance videos, which have gained millions of views, have gotten the attention of people like Beyoncé , who brought the two to London to perform at her Ivy Park clothing line launch in 2016.   For ten years, Chloe and Maud have also organized the DC Tap Festival  under Chloe and Maud Productions in their hometown of Washington D.C. It has grown to become the biggest tap dance festival in the world. All these things are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Chloe and Maud’s accomplishments, and they have much more planned in the future. We spoke with the two artists soon after Chloe’s Emmy nomination for choreographing a segment of The Late Late Show With James Corden.  The two talked about their humble beginnings in D.C. and how  Debbie Allen helped them expand their creative talents early on in their career (at one point, the two even lived with Allen every summer to train). The years that followed were filled with lessons that contribute to Chloe and Maud’s amazing journey. So can you both start out by describing the biggest obstacles you had to face starting in dance? Maud: One of the obstacles was growing up poor. Usually, if you’re poor, things are set up so that you stay poor and you stay where you’re from and you don’t elevate out of that situation. Luckily, our mom is extremely illustrious and she read the newspaper and never allowed a lack of money to stop us from going after what we worked for in life.  Another obstacle was people forgetting about tap dance.  Chloe:   Our artform was marginalized in the world of dance and in the general public. Then within that art form, African American women are marginalized. As we’re leveling up, we did receive resistance from some of the gatekeepers and men in our field. When we started to assert our own voice and our own style, it shook up the status quo and there was some resistance.  That was probably the most disappointing because you hope that the people who are seeing you work your butt off are excited for you when you start to make it happen. But what Maud and I really learned from that is that no matter what, you have to stay positive.  How did Debbie Allen play a role in your career? Chloe: As a teenager and for Maud’s preteens, Debbie Allen became our guiding voice and kind of awakened our possibilities. She taught us to learn everything about the arts that you possibly want to know and then it’ll be there in your foundation down the road. So that’s how we expanded to learn all styles and she encouraged us to act, and study film, and to sing. Literally anything you’re feeling artisticly, she encouraged you to do.   And then after years of dancing and putting in work, Beyoncé eventually came into the picture. You shot a “Beyoncé Tap Salute”  that she shared on her Facebook. Then you put out a “Formation” tribute video that she shared again? Chloe: Well the second time Beyonce shared our video, it was on her Facebook page and it was on the homepage of Beyoncé.com for several weeks. That catapulted us to at least 20 million or something views for the video. And then she hired us to go to London to launch her clothing line Ivy Park. We have not stopped working since that.   Chloe: It’s just absolutely incredible and Maud and I always say, it’s a testament to what happens when women really believe in sisterhood, support it and elevate it. It makes the difference because not only has Beyoncé elevated all of the lives in Syncopated Ladies, but then that funnels to all of our students and all of the people online that are looking to us. So for all the people who watch our videos, it becomes this translation of the importance of sisterhood and lifting each other up, and believing and sharing your platform when you have it.   Was there anything that surprised you when working with a particular artist like Beyoncé’s team or James Corden? Chloe: Interesting enough, I’m constantly inspired by the kindness of the teams of the people that we’ve worked with, and finding a serious parallel between excellence and kindness. So Beyoncé’s team…they were so kind. Like truly kind. When I got nominated for an Emmy, they all congratulated me. Like they’re busy, they were on tour. But the fact that they’re constantly kind — I’m just very thankful that the universe has been placing us around like-minded people with a common sense of values. Now that you all have gained this new level of success, what are your biggest obstacles now? Maud:  I would say now our biggest issue is time management. Now, we need to expand because we have so much work coming in that we’re excited about. We want to make T.V. shows, and sell them and write them. It’s about finding that time to do all of those things. Chloe:  I think it’s a matter of getting the investors too, so that we can build the infrastructure needed so that our time can be divided. Because we do everything. So being able to have Chloe and Maud Productions hire employees. Creating more partnerships with brands and opportunities to help build our infrastructure so that we can get more hands on deck.

Flawless! Michelle Obama Slays In Dior For December’s ELLE Cover

Source: Tom Williams / Getty Former First Lady Michelle Obama is serving up a serious lewk on the December issue of ELLE Magazine ! Rocking a Dior Poplin shirt, pleated-voile skirt and leather corset, our #ForeverFLOTUS looks like a stunning queen. Just take a look for yourself: Amazing! The Harvard and Princeton educated lawyer was interviewed by none other than iconic journalist and talk show host Oprah Winfrey . In a deeply personal and enlightening interview, the two discussed a range of topics including her memoir, overcoming her marriage issues with counseling and how Donald Trump’s birther conspiracies impacted her family. When asked was she scared about sharing so much of her personal life with the public, Mrs. Obama surprisingly replied that she wasn’t. “Actually, no, because here’s the thing that I realized: People always ask me, ‘Why is it that you’re so authentic?’ ‘How is it that people connect to you?” And I think it starts because I like me. I like my story and all the bumps and bruises. That’s what makes me uniquely me.: Adding, “So I’ve always been open with my staff, with young people, with my friends. And the other thing, Oprah: I know that whether we like it or not, Barack and I are role models.”   On how she had to learn to love differently to keep her marriage intact: “I had to learn to love differently, I feel vulnerable all the time, and I had to learn how to express that to my husband, to tap into those parts of me that missed him — and the sadness that came from that — so that he could understand. He didn’t understand distance in the same way. You know, he grew up without his mother in his life for most of his years, and he knew his mother loved him dearly, right? I always thought love was up close. Love is the dinner table, love is consistency, it is presence. So I had to share my vulnerability and also learn to love differently. It was an important part of my journey of becoming. Understanding how to become us…I share this because I know that people look to me and Barack as the ideal relationship. I know there’s #RelationshipGoals out there. But whoa, people, slow down — marriage is hard!” On Trump’s dangerous rhetoric about former President Obama: “Because I don’t think he knew what he was doing. For him it was a game. But the threats that you face as the commander in chief are real. And your children are at risk. In order for my children to have a normal life, even though they had security, they were in the world in a way that we weren’t. To think that some crazed person might be ginned up to think my husband was a threat to the country’s security; and to know that my children, every day, had to go to a school, and soccer games, parties, and travel; to think that this person would not take into account that this was not a game—that’s something that I want the country to understand. I want the country to take this in, in a way I didn’t say out loud, but I am saying now. It was reckless, it put my family in danger, and it wasn’t true. And he knew it wasn’t true.”   On no longer living in the White House and the simple freedoms that come with that: So here I am in my new home, just me and Bo and Sunny, and I do a simple thing. I go downstairs and open the cabinet in my own kitchen—which you don’t do in the White House because there’s always somebody there going, ‘Let me get that. What do you want? What do you need?’—and I made myself toast. Cheese toast. Then I took my toast and I walked out into my backyard. I sat on the stoop, and there were dogs barking in the distance, and I realized Bo and Sunny had really never heard neighbor dogs.   On holding up Barack and combatting the pressures that came with the being the first Black family in the White House: “Trying to be the calm in his swerve. You know, when the leaves are blowing and the wind is rough, being a steady trunk in his life. Family dinners. That was one of the things I brought into the White House—that strict code of, You gotta catch up with us, dude. This is when we’re having dinner. Yes, you’re president, but you can bring your butt from the Oval Office and sit down and talk to your children. Because children bring solace. They let you turn your sights off the issues of the day and focus on saving the tigers. That was one of Malia’s primary goals; she advocated throughout his presidency to make sure the tigers were saved. And hearing about what happened with what school friend. Immersing yourself in the reality and the beauty of your children and your family. Plus, on the East Wing side, our motto was, we have to do everything excellently. If we do something—because the First Lady doesn’t  have  to do anything.”   On the importance of remaining optimistic in these tumultuous times: “Yes. We have to feel that optimism. For the kids. We’re setting the table for them, and we can’t hand them crap. We have to hand them hope. Progress isn’t made through fear. We’re experiencing that right now. Fear is the coward’s way of leadership. But kids are born into this world with a sense of hope and optimism. No matter where they’re from. Or how tough their stories are. They think they can be anything because we tell them that. So we have a responsibility to be optimistic. And to operate in the world in that way.” Just amazing and inspiring! Read the ELLE cover article in its entirety here . Thug Passion: Teenaged Tupac Shakur Lust Letters Up For Auction

Source: Al Pereira / Getty Take note, if you die young and a superstar, all your business will eventually get out there. Case in point, a couple of love letters a teenaged Tupac Shakur wrote a high school crush are going up for sale.  Reports TMZ : The folks over at Moments in Time are selling 2 handwritten letters for a cool $15k. They’re from the rapper to a teen crush when he was a 14-year-old freshman in 1985 at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Baltimore. They’re addressed to Averel, who at the time was the same age. The first letter reveals a shy Tupac introducing himself to Averel. Tupac surfaces in the second one as emboldened … professing his wants and needs, if ya catch our drift. We’re told Averel, who sold the letters to Moments in Time, was not impressed by Tupac’s game. Worth noting, one letter is signed “Passionately, Tupac (New York) Shakur.” Yes, he dotted the “i” with a heart.” Check out the love letters right here . First Black NHL Player To Be Inducted Into League’s Hall Of Fame

N early six decades after breaking racial barriers in the NHL, an athlete is finally receiving the recognition that he has long deserved. 83-year-old Willie O’Ree —the first Black player in the National Hockey League—will be inducted into the league’s Hall of Fame on Monday, the New York Times reported. O’Ree, 83, the league’s first black player, is being honored not just for the historical significance of his career, but also for his decades of working with young players all over North America https://t.co/mXvQ8w2rpc — NYT Sports (@NYTSports) November 10, 2018 O’Ree entered the league in 1958 and played for the Boston Bruins, the news outlet writes. During his career—which lasted for 24 seasons—he encountered the unthinkable all due to the color of his skin. There was an incident where during a brawl an opponent knocked his teeth out with a hockey stick and there was another time where unruly fans attempted to pull him into the stands and attack him. “I heard that N-word so many times that I just let it go in one ear and out the other,” O’Ree told the news outlet. “I never fought because of racial slurs or remarks. I fought because guys speared me, butt-ended me, crosschecked me and things of that nature. Otherwise I would have spent every game in the penalty box.” Despite those obstacles, O’Ree persevered because he knew that stepping on the ice to compete was something bigger than him and he was breaking barriers for Black athletes who would follow in his footsteps. After retiring from hockey, O’Ree spearheaded several youth programs in an effort to diversify the sport. O’Ree’s legacy has inspired the generations of Black athletes who have come behind him. “Willie O’Ree’s story must not be forgotten,” Karl Subban , a father of three Black NHL draft picks, told Sports Illustrated . “He has made it possible for my boys to have the NHL dream and to believe they could achieve it. He changed hockey which is now for everyone. Hockey needed him and so does the Hockey Hall of Fame. The time is right!” There remains a lack of diversity in the NHL. According to the New York Times , 97 percent of the league is white.
