Tree of Life Officially Out of This Year’s Oscar Derby

Oscar pundits have been holding down a space for Terrence Malick’s long-delayed The Tree of Life for two years, and today brings both good news and bad. On the plus side: The Sean Penn/Brad Pitt drama is finally kinda-sorta dated! Downside: It’s coming out next year. Fox Searchlight dropped the bomb today while announcing that the studio has picked up domestic rights to distribute, and considering the packed awards slate Searchlight is fielding this year (which includes Never Let Me Go, Black Swan, 127 Hours , and Conviction ), maybe a 2011 berth is best. Susan Boyle haters can thank Lou Reed this morning for causing the Britain’s Got Talent sensation to flee the states. TMZ reports that Boyle flew into Los Angeles yesterday to sing “Perfect Day” on America’s Got Talent but the performance was 86-ed at the last minute when Velvet Underground lead singer Lou Reed refused to give her permission to perform the song because he “is not a fan.” Upon learning the news, Boyle promptly fled the set in tears, returned to LAX and hopped on a plane back to London. Unmaking the Sausage: Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters is Supposed to Be a Joke, Right?

Haha, Hollywood… you guys . Always with the fake-franchise speculation, hype and innuendo, the inflation of a screenwriter’s pitch to a full-blown screenplay, the complete and total fabrication of cast and director negotiations, attachments and commitments… too funny. Especially Paramount’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters , starring Jeremy Renner and Noomi Rapace and co-produced by Adam McKay. Hilarious. Wait, what?

Is Piers Morgan’s Larry King Live Takeover the Ellen/American Idol Snafu of 2011?

We didn’t need more confirmation that Piers Morgan will take over for Larry King next year, but here we have it: Morgan and CNN have released a statement announcing that he will “fill the legendary suspenders” in January . Huzzah. While we’ve already coped with the fact that Morgan will say, “Hello, Tuscaloosa!” with little flair, it’s time to consider whether the America’s Got Talent judge’s new gig will be 2011’s greatest TV snafu.
