The Russian Spy Caper: So Funny, Except When It’s Not

Leave it to the Russians to not understand that the Cold War is dead and buried. The 10 alleged deep-cover operatives who were arrested on Monday may number more spies than were here in the 1950s, when there was a real possibility of war between the U.S. and Russia. (An 11th suspect was apprehended in Cyprus but released on bail.) You have to wonder what the Russians could have been thinking to spend the tens of millions of dollars that such an espionage infrastructure costs. Were they planning for a new Cold War? The other odd thing is that the suspected Russian operatives seem to have been stuck with a Cold War spy's craft, with secret writing, dead drops and money stashes. What was wrong with flying to Europe to meet your control officer once a month? On top of that, there was a comic sloppiness to the whole operation. At one point, an undercover FBI agent introduced himself to one of the suspects, claiming to be a substitute-control officer. Not only did the alleged Russian operative fall for it, she didn't notice that afterward, she was followed by more undercover FBI agents to a Verizon store, where they observed her buying a prepaid phone card. They then observed her as she apparently dropped the Verizon bag into a trash can — with the receipt in it. The name on it was Irene Kutsov — not the Americanized alias she reportedly used in the U.S. — and the address “99 Fake Street.” Indeed, the suspects were not charged with espionage but, much less glamorously, conspiring to act as unauthorized foreign agents and conspiring to commit money laundering. Moscow has called the accusations baseless. Read more: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2000396,00.html?xid=rss-topstorie… added by: Sexirobot

CNN Fails to Label Liberal Group Poised to Sue McDonald’s Over ‘Happy Meal’ Toys

As NewsBusters sister company CNSNews.com reported , the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a liberal consumer advocacy group, is threatening to sue the McDonald’s Corporation for “unfair and deceptive” marketing practices unless the fast food company stops giving away toys in its “Happy Meals.” CNN’s “American Morning” on June 23 covered the story half-jokingly, but failed to identify the liberal tilt of organization. Co-host Kiran Chetry reported: “The Center for Science in the Public Interest is delivering a warning to McDonald’s about toys being used to make “Happy Meals” more appetizing to kids. They say “Happy Meals” are unhealthy.” Making no effort to apply an appropriate label to the organization, co-host John Roberts continued: “The group accuses the fast food giant of ‘unfair and deceptive’ marketing practices toward children. McDonald’s, of course, as you could image, rejects the accusations.” On the surface, CNN crafted the impression that CSPI is a quirky but sincere consumer advocacy organization, but underlying the group’s innocuous veneer are liberal activists willing to inject partisan politics into consumer safety.                   Referring to the Bush administration, CSPI Litigation Director Stephen Gardner told CNSNews.com: “Marketers of all kinds in this country, one, were lulled into a sense of true security under the prior administration when the federal agencies did absolutely nothing to protect consumers.” At the end of the segment, both Chetry and Roberts seemed dismissive of the lawsuit, but neither anchor was willing to inform viewers of CSPI’s liberal leanings and history of pushing a public policy diet heavy in government regulation . A transcript of the segment can be found below: CNN American Morning 6/23/10 7:56 a.m. KIRAN CHETRY, co-host: Welcome back to the most news in the morning. The food police have a beef with McyDees. The Center for Science in the Public Interest is delivering a warning to McDonald’s about toys being used to make “Happy Meals” more appetizing to kids. They say “Happy Meals” are unhealthy. JOHN ROBERTS, co-host: Yeah, they’re putting McDonald’s on notice, saying “drop the toys, or we’ll sue you.” The group accuses the fast food giant of “unfair and deceptive” marketing practices toward children. McDonald’s, of course, as you could image, rejects the accusations. CHETRY: They can’t get a break. First they tried to give away the glasses but they had to recall them because of cadmium in the paint on the “Shrek” glasses. ROBERTS: Well that definitely is a bad thing, but the toy? Come on. –Alex Fitzsimmons is a News Analysis intern at the Media Research Center. Click here to follow him on Twitter.

Sarah Ferguson: Drunk and Taking Bribes

Sarah Ferguson, a.k.a. Fergie, a.k.a. Britain’s Duchess of York, says she was drinking and “not in my right place” when she was caught in a sting operation. The set-up? Ferg was caught on video offering access to her former husband, Prince Andrew, for $724,000. She told Oprah Winfrey she was “in the gutter.” “I’m aware of the fact that I’ve been drinking, you know. I was not in my right place,” Sarah Ferguson said in an interview set to air on Oprah on Tuesday. Ferguson said she had seen the video while traveling through airports recently but had not sat down to watch closely: “I haven’t faced the devil in the face.” According to transcripts of the show, the Duchess says “I was in the gutter at that moment.” We’re inclined to believe it, given the accusations in this case. Tape of the sting was posted by London’s News of the World , which set up the meeting. Ferguson asks for $40,000 cash and 500,000 pounds ($718,500). In exchange for that wire transfer, she agrees to introduce an undercover reporter to the prince. It’s unclear why the reporter supposedly wanted access. The newspaper’s sting operation has caused a major embarrassment for the 50-year-old Sarah Ferguson, who has a pair of daughters with Prince Andrew. Andrew is the second son of Queen Elizabeth and fourth in line to the throne. The prince is also known as the Duke of York. The couple divorced in 1996. He acts as Britain’s special representative for international trade and investment, so surely this can’t be going over well across the pond. More to come .

John Travolta and Kelly Preston: Expecting!

John Travolta and Kelly Preston, who lived through the tragedy of losing their teenage son Jett last year, can now announce the best news they’ve had in years. Kelly is pregnant at age 47! “It’s impossible to keep a secret … especially one as wonderful as this,” they say in a statement. “We want to be the first to share this great news with everyone.” “We are expecting a new addition to our family. Love, John, Kelly and Ella.” Travolta, 56, who broke the news on his site, and Preston are also parents to Ella, 10. Here’s the cute, soon-to-be-growing family … John, Kelly and Ella are expecting a new baby . Jett Travolta died of a seizure in January 2009 at age 16. The tragedy was even harder for the family given the extortion plot against them stemming from it. We couldn’t be happier for them today, though. Nothing can bring back the child they lost, but to bring another into the world is always a magical experience. Congratulations to the Travoltas!

Bryant Gumbel & Al Roker: Leave Matt Lauer Alone!

Bryant Gumbel and Al Roker – friends and Today colleagues of Matt Lauer – say the TV anchor and his wife Annette Roque seem fine … and to back off! Echoing the couple’s own angry denials of a breakup, Gumbel said: “Nobody likes being under a microscope, even in the best of times. It’s not pleasant.” “I think they’re doing fine. They just stay away from the glare.” Gumbel’s wife Hilary also spoke in support of the Lauers: “They’ve made their rebuttal [to the accusations] … They’ve done what they needed to do.” Lauer was said to be having an affair, and Alexis Houston (alleged sister of Whitney) was alleged to be the other woman involved in the scandal. Today weatherman Al Roker says he doesn’t believe rumors . Matt and Annette Lauer have denied cheating allegations . “All I know is that he’s great,” Roker said. “I’ve seen him. They’re fine. It’s more about things on the outside. Everything on the inside is fine.” Matt Lauer and his wife, married since 1998, blasted a report alleging that Lauer had moved out of the family’s apartment amid reports of infidelity. According to the report, the sexy beast was also looking for his own bachelor pad. He told People last week that the story was “a work of fiction.” While acknowledging vaguely the imperfections in his marriage, Lauer denied the details of the report and says everything is fine with Annette. We hope so. The couple has three kids under the age of 10.

More Women Accuse Steven Seagal of Sexual Misconduct

Kayden Nguyen may have been alone with Steven Segal when he allegedly tried to fondle her inappropriately , but the model is not alone in her accusations against the actor. As first reported by TMZ, two more women have come forward and delivered sworn declarations to Nguyen’s legal team that paint Seagal in a shady (sort of hilarious) light. Both females claim they were also employed by the former action star when he made unwanted advances against them. One says Seagal lured her into a bedroom, groped her boobs and said he was ” checking just as a doctor would for lumps .” However, on Seagal’s resume, he’s played a Navy SEAL, an environmental protection agent and about nine renegade cops. But never a physician. The declaration adds: “Seagal reached his hand down my pants. He said, ‘ I just wanted to touch it for a second to see what it felt like .'” Under siege from the press, Steven Seagal could soon be entering the dark territory of a jail cell. As you might expect, Seagal’s lawyer, Marty Singer, has a different view of the new allegations. “My client has no knowledge of these women and a preliminary check of his employment records does not show that they ever worked for him,” he told TMZ. “The declarations were clearly prepared by Nguyen’s lawyer to be leaked to the media to help bolster his client’s meritless claims.” Fine. But what is Seagal’s defense for Under Siege 2 ?!?

Ben Roethlisberger Accuser Claimed She Was Raped By NFL Star, Coerced By Bodyguard

Ben Roethlisberger’s sexual assault accuser has broken her silence for the first time, describing an allegedly disturbing incident with the NFL star. A friend of the woman told police that Roethlisberger’s bodyguard dragged the woman into a bathroom where she and Ben had sexual relations. In 572 pages of documents released Wednesday, Nicole Biancofiore told police that her friend, a student at Georgia State University, “was dragged by a bodyguard to the back room in Capital [City, a local nightclub].” “She was extremely intoxicated and not aware of what was happening.” Ben Roethlisberger: What a shady individual. “He had sex w/me and meanwhile his bodyguards told my friends they couldn’t pass them to get to me,” the accuser wrote in her statement. Roethlisberger will not be charged in the incident, which occurred March 5, as the accusations could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. In the Milledgeville, Ga., incident, Roethlisberger was out drinking with friends to celebrate his 28th birthday and bumped into the student. The girl and her sorority sisters linked up with Ben’s crew at Capital City, where he invited them to a VIP section and bought them shots. Later, the accuser said Roethlisberger had sex with her in a bathroom … having already taken the equipment out beforehand. Uhh … Another friend of the accuser, Aliesha Scholten, told police she tried to open the door, but “she was taken away by a bodyguard of Ben’s.” The initial police report said that “One of the suspect’s bodyguards escorted her to a back room/hallway area where the suspect was.” “Once there, she stated, the suspect asked her for sex. It is unclear what happened after this due to the ” hysterical ” complainant’s recollection being foggy. However, she did write a statement of what she thought happened.” She told authorities Ben took his penis out of his pants before following her into a bathroom, and later told people she was raped . This just moments after her encounter with Ben. According to one witness, the accuser claimed it all started in a secluded hallway when Ben walked over “with his penis already out of his pants.” The accuser claimed she tried to walk out of the area, but instead of opening an exit, mistakenly opened the bathroom door … and walked in. According to the witness, the accuser claimed afterward that Ben followed her inside the bathroom, shut the door, and proceeded to rape her.

Kayden Nguyen: Nude, Serious About Steven Seagal Lawsuit

Despite a threat from Steven Seagal’s lawyer, Kayden Nguyen is undeterred in her lawsuit against the actor. She’s also undressed in the photos below. First (more clothed and court-related) things first: Marty Singer, the attorney for Seagal, says Nguyen’s sexual harassment suit against his client “is in direct violation of the terms of the confidentiality agreement” she signed in February, after she earned a job with Seagal. Nguyen alleges this job was advertised as an executive assistant position… but Seagal instead placed Kayden in a compromising position on her first day in the office, grabbing her breasts and feeling for her crotch. If true, it was the actor’s ugliest behavior since everything he did in 2001’s Exit Wounds . Singer has threatened to seek lawyer fees, costs and sanctions from Nguyen if she goes through with the lawsuit – but her attorney isn’t budging. Replied William Waldo: “Please tell Steven Seagal two things. First, the cheap shot threats that might have intimidated other victims and their lawyers don’t phase me. Save your ink. Second, Ms. Nguyen’s claims are not going away. Five other victims called me yesterday.” Seagal has denied the accusations , while his hilarious reality show ( Steven Seagal Lawman ) has been placed on hiatus. Meanwhile, Kayden Nguyen nude photos have hit the Web. Peep them below. Posing nude does not turn Kayden Nguyen into liar. But it will turn her into a popular presence on the Internet.
