Jim Carrey To Bring Classic ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ To Big Screen

Film will be upscale adaptation of popular children’s book. By Kara Warner Jim Carrey Photo: Todd Brown/ MTV News The last time Jim Carrey lit up the big screen, he did so as four different CGI characters in Disney’s animated “A Christmas Carol” reboot. Now, in addition to the recently announced project “Pierre, Pierre,” with “Bruno” director Larry Charles, Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has lined up the funnyman to star in “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” based on the classic children’s book of the same name. The film adaptation is said to be an upscale spin on the book, with Carrey in the role of the titular Mr. Popper, now a high-powered businessman who suddenly inherits six penguins. As Popper becomes increasingly attached to his feathered friends, his life unravels and you guessed it wackiness ensues. According to the script synopsis, Popper’s swanky apartment turns into a winter wonderland, and he almost lands in jail. “But thanks to his new charges,” the logline reads, “Popper comes to understand the importance of family human and otherwise.” Fans of the book, written by Richard and Florence Atwater, will note that this proposed film version is a departure from the 1938 original, in which Popper is a poor housepainter who receives the surprise gift of a penguin by mail after writing into a radio broadcast hosted by Antarctic explorer Admiral Drake. Eventually, one penguin turns into 12, and in order to support their expansive brood, the Poppers train the penguins to perform. Perhaps Carrey can convince the filmmakers to reintroduce the painter aspect of Popper’s character, given the actor’s newfound passion for painting, which he has been chronicling via his Twitter account. No word on when production is scheduled to begin, but Mark Waters (“Mean Girls” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles”) is set to direct. ‘True-ish Grit?’ Hollywood Libs Attempt Remaking a Classic

Hollywood westerns don’t sell very well anymore. Remakes of westerns don’t sell and they tend to remind those who do see them of the superiority of the originals. So remaking the iconic 1969 western, “True Grit,” for which John Wayne received his only Best Actor Oscar, seems an odd choice for the Coen brothers. But the extremely successful directors of “Fargo,” “Oh Brother Where Art Thou?” and “No Country for Old Men,” are indeed remaking “True Grit.” They stress that their effort is based more on the 1968 novel by Charles Portis than the original movie. Still, The Duke’s portrayal of hard-drinking, one-eyed Marshall Rooster Cogburn has been a TV staple for decades. Portis’ novel – not so much. The Coens’ quirky, often dark and sometimes absurd portraits of America couldn’t be much more different from any flick in John Wayne’s legendary career. And maybe that’s the point. After all, any movie with America-bashing lefty Matt Damon in an important supporting role is bound to be at odds with traditional takes on the American frontier. All the more-so because Damon admitted, “I’ve never even seen the original John Wayne movie.” The Coens cast 2010 Best Actor Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges as Cogburn. Bridges will have to be a heck of an actor to do the character justice, because in real life, he couldn’t be more different than Wayne, a traditional conservative. Bridges is an admitted pot-smoker and marijuana legalization advocate. On his website , Bridges has a page dedicated to the End Hunger Network, a charity he helped establish. While Bridges work with this charity is admirable, he downplays the role of charities on the page, and advocates for massive government intervention. We can never end hunger through the wonderful work of local charities – like other western democracies, we must end hunger through governmental leadership. Charity is nice for some things, but not as a way to feed a nation. We don’t protect our national security through charities and we shouldn’t protect our families that way either.  Included in the cast are Josh Brolin, son of James Brolin and stepson of actress and liberal activist Barbara Streisand. Brolin and Damon, who play’s Glenn Campbell’s old role as LeBeuf, have collaborated before. They participated (along with Hugo Chavez pal Danny Glover) in a History Channel Miniseries based around the 1980 anti-American revisionist book, “A People’s History of the United States,” written by communist historian Howard Zinn . And of course, there’s Damon, fresh from his failed anti-American agit-prop thriller, “The Green Zone.” So maybe the Coens know what they’re doing, and we can all look forward to “A People’s History of True Grit.”

Justin Long ‘Would Love To’ Star In ‘Die Hard 5’

‘I don’t know if I’m going to get my hands on it,’ he laughs about the Bruce Willis franchise. By Kara Warner Justin Long Photo: MTV News In addition to having some wacky moments, Bruce Willis dropped some exciting tidbits on MTV News at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, revealing, for one, that “Die Hard 5” is “imminent.” When we caught up with his “Die Hard With a Vengeance” co-star Justin Long, we asked him how he might be involved in the imminent, as Willis described it, fifth installment of the misadventures of John McClane. Apparently, Long needed a quick vocabulary lesson before responding. “Nice try, Bruce, for making up a word. I think he meant emasculate,” Long joked while promoting his September 3 flick “Going the Distance.” “No, I heard it was imminent and as soon as I looked up the word, I got excited.” But Long said his excitement was unfortunately short-lived, his mood tempered somewhat by what he said was an awkward exchange with a film studio executive. “I had a meeting recently at Fox about doing a romantic [comedy],” Long explained. “And the guy in the office next door, he was in charge of the new ‘Die Hard,’ [so] I said, ‘Do you mind if I pop my head in?’ So I met him and I was like, ‘Ummm?’ ” the actor recalled, gesturing with his hands in a motion that suggested “what about me?” “He was equally vague in his gesture back to me,” Long said. “So I didn’t get a good feeling that I was going to be a part of the imminent ‘Die Hard.’ I don’t know if I’m going to get my hands on it.” He added, “I would love to.” With or without Long, it seems a decision about whether the film will actually happen is still up for debate. What do you think about Long’s character coming back for a fifth “Die Hard” movie? Tell us in the comments! Mel Gibson: Trying to Dodge Court Deposition?

Is Mel Gibson trying to avoid sitting down for a deposition as part of the domestic violence investigation launched against him? All depends on who you ask. Sources connected with Oksana Grigorieva , who accuses the actor of beating her, say that Gibson is going to great lengths to avoid sitting for his deposition. Oksana’s camp believes Mel does not want his deposition taken before the L.A. County District Attorney makes a decision on whether to prosecute the actor. The D.A.’s office will make its decision on whether the police’s domestic violence investigation warrants charges against him within the next couple of weeks. Mel will almost certainly choose to assert his Fifth Amendment privilege on most, if not all, of the events surrounding the January 6 fight, TMZ speculates. As for the implications of that on the family case – Mel and Oksana are also fighting for custody of eight-month-old daughter Lucia – that remains to be seen. Regardless, the deposition was scheduled more than two weeks ago, only Oksana was far from pleased to learn Mel was out of the country on a fishing trip. Other sources dispute that Mel is intentionally avoiding his deposition, saying he will be back this weekend and the deposition should take place shortly. The Mel Gibson rants Oksana recorded and leaked certainly prove how badly he needs help, but as far as whether he abused her? That’s much murkier. He’s apparently had a P.I. grilling witnesses , or alleged witnesses, to the attack(s). Are any of them credible? That will be up to the D.A. to determine.

Report: Charlie Sheen Tossed Brooke Mueller Around "Like a Rag Doll," Actor Blames Attack on Train Single

Last week, Charlie Sheen was sentenced to 30 days in rehab for his infamous Christmas Day fight with Brooke Mueller. But it’s clear this actor belongs behind bars. According to a newly-released police report, the December 2009 attack – in which Sheen allegedly held a knife to his wife’s throat – wasn’t the first time these two got into it physically. Both Sheen and Mueller confirmed to officers on the scene that day that Brooke had suffered head trauma during an incident a couple months earlier. The two sides disagree on whether that injury was inflicted intentionally, however. Wrote Officer Rick Magnuson: “I asked [Sheen] if he ever harmed Mueller in the past. [Sheen] stated that approximately two months ago, in California, Mueller accused him of sleeping with prostitutes. [Sheen] stated that he denied this allegation, which escalated into a ‘huge fight.’ He added that when Mueller attempted to leave the argument, he grabbed her by the wrist, causing her to fall to the ground.” The Two and a Half Men star acknowledges Mueller sought medical treatment at the time, but claims he was acting to simply restrain his wife when the accident occurred. But Brooke told a different story. When Magnuson questioned Mueller about the fall 2009 fight, she got “upset,” he wrote in his report, adding that neither side contacted authorities to report this altercation. “She was very adamant that [Sheen] intentionally hurt her by throwing her to the ground, like a ‘rag doll.’” What does the band Train have to do with any of this? According to Sheen, it was the popular single “Drops of Jupiter” that contributed to the Christmas Day fracas. He told police at his home that he and his daughter “share an affinity for both astronomy” and the Train song. Mueller took exception to this, allegedly, growing irate and jealous and asking why Charlie has a tune he shared with his daughter, but not one with her. Now, with the couple living apart and divorce likely imminent , the questions remain: Did the wind sweep them off their feet? Did they finally get the chance to dance along the light of day and head back toward the Milky Way? And do they miss each other while looking for themselves out there?
