This synopsis for X-Men: Days of Future Past explains how two Professor Xs and Magnetos can co-exist in the same film (via The Film Stage ): The storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps. The present-day X-Men are forewarned of the possible future by a future version of their teammate Kitty Pryde, whose mind traveled back in time and possessed her younger self to warn the X-Men. It’s a familiar tale to fans of the X-Men comic; the dystopian alternate future saga of Days of Future Past was a hugely popular storyline, adapted memorably in the animated X-Men series in episodes featuring the time-traveling Bishop. The original comic storyline featured Kitty Pryde in the pivotal time-traveling role; is it too much to hope for Ellen Page reprising her X3 character to bring the entire X-Men film franchise full circle? The A-List Goes Indie: Spirit Awards Nominations Heavy On Hollywood Alpha Males

When the Independent Spirit Awards  take place in Santa Monica on the Saturday before the Academy Awards  next February,  there should be plenty of A-list testosterone coursing through the event tent.  The slate of nominations for the 2013 honors , which celebrate independent film, is studded with box-office friendly male actor who’ve carried studio films. And Jennifer Lawrence .  Best Male Lead Jack Black ( Bernie) , Bradley Cooper ( Silver Linings Playbook ) and Matthew McConaughey ( Killer Joe ) , who’ve all starred in studio pictures,  count for three of the six Best Male Lead nominations. John Hawkes ( The Sessions ) , who’s on the verge of leading-man status, Wendell Pierce ( Four ) and Thure Lindhardt ( Keep The Lights On ) round out the category. That’s a considerably more Hollywood pack than last year’s nominations, of which there were only five: The biggest studio star in that bunch was Ryan Gosling ( Drive ), whose fellow nominees were, respectively French and Mexican actors, Jean Dujardin ( The Artist ) and Demián Bichir ( A Better Life ) and Woody Harrelson ( Rampart )  and Michael Shannon ( Take Shelter ), who are best known for excellent character work. Best Female Lead The Female Acting categories are not so larded with heavy hitters, but they do include   The Hunger Games star Lawrence, nominated for Best Female Lead based on her performance in Silver Linings Playbook , and Helen Hunt, who nabbed a Best Supporting Female nomination for her portrayal of a sex therapist in The Sessions . Best Supporting Male Actor The Best Supporting Male actor category also has two A-listers: Bruce Willis , for his work in Wes Anderson ‘s Moonrise Kingdom, and, nominated in his second category, McConaughey  for his inspired pelvic thrusting in Magic Mike . As far as I’m concerned, Sam Rockwell, who’s nominated for Seven Psychopaths , is an A-lister, too, even if he hasn’t anchored a tentpole movie. With the indie film market growing increasingly choked with product, big-box-office actors populating independent movies — and getting honored for their work — probably isn’t going away any time soon since A-list names help draw investors and distributors to small projects. In terms of reading the Oscar tea leaves, five Spirit nominations for Moonrise Kingdom , including Best Film and Best Director, bodes well for Wes Anderson’s Academy Award nomination chances. Hawkes and Hunt’s actor nominations could provide the spark that The Sessions needs to get back into the Oscar derby. Multiple nominations for Silver Linings Playbook should intensify the film’s already golden Oscar glow, while nods to  Beasts of the Southern Wild   and its child star  Quvenzhané Wallis  are making the film look like one strong dark-horse candidate. Who wasn’t nominated for a Spirit Award is also interesting.  Despite fine performances in both Hyde Park on Hudson and Moonrise Kingdom , longtime studio-star-turned-indie-darling Bill Murray got bupkis, and, though Channing Tatum got the lion’s share of the press when  Magic Mike  was released — in part because he produced the picture and brought his real-life experiences as a stripper to the story — his G-string came up empty. ‘Moonrise Kingdom,’ ‘How To Survive A Plague’ ‘Beasts’ Win Gothams

Wes Anderson ‘s Moonrise Kingdom won Best Feature tonight at the IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards tonight in New York, while David France’s How to Survive a Plague took Best Director. Benh Zeitlin ‘s Beasts of the Southern Wild , meanwhile won two awards including the Breakthrough Director prize and the inaugural Bingham Ray award. Moonrise Kingdom actors Bob Balaban took to the stage with fellow actors noting that if “Wes Anderson asks you to be in a movie…just be in it.” Anderson was a no-show, however, for the big win. Zeitlin took Best Breakthrough Director for Beasts of the Southern Wild . Taking to the stage, he said he hopes more people gets the kind of “freedom” he had to make his film which won Sundance earlier this year and the Camera d’Or in Cannes earlier this year. Zeitlin also won the inaugural Bingham Ray Award which honors a “promising emerging filmmaker.” How to Survive a Plague won Best Documentary. The film captures the ACT-UP movement and the push to get antivirals through government roadblocks. The emotional doc won accolades at Sundance. “It’s a story not about what AIDS did to our community, but a story about what our community did to HIV,” said director David France. Best Ensemble Cast went to Your Sister’s Sister . Actor Mark Duplass thanked his fellow actors Rosemarie Dewitt and Emily Blunt for their work only making $100 a day. The film beat out the likes of heavy-hitting Oscar contender Silver Linings Playbook as well as Moonrise Kingdom and Bernie . Angus T. Jones Slams Two and a Half Men as "Filth"

Charlie Sheen may no longer be a member of the Two and a Half Men cast , but controversy continues to trail this sitcom. The latest surrounds star Angus T. Jones, who represents the fraction in the show’s title. In a wide-ranging, religious-based interview that has founds it way online, the actor slams the program’s content and tells fans NOT to tune in for it on Thursday nights. Angus T. Jones: Two and a Half Men Sucks! “If you watch Two and a Half Men , please stop watching Two and a Half Men … I don’t want to be on it. Please stop watching it, and filling your head with filth… “People say it’s just entertainment. Do some research on the effects of television and your brain, and I promise you you’ll have a decision to make when it comes to television, especially with what you watch.” Well, Chuck Lorre, the contentious ball is in your court. We can’t wait to see how you play with it.

2013 Oscar Predictions: Oscar Index Evaluates The Best Director Race

You’re done gorging on turkey, which means only one thing: ‘Tis the season to be stuffed with Oscar punditry. Movieline ‘s Institute For the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics has awoken from its L-Tryptophan slumber to provide you with our latest Oscar Index , which evaluates the contenders for Best Director. The latest Index on Best Picture can be found here , and over the course of the long weekend, we’ll be weighing in on the Best Actor, Actress and Support Actor and Actress races. How The Oscar Index Works With each award category that we track, we’ll present four different rankings. Movieline Executive Editor Jen Yamato , Managing Editor Brian Brooks and myself will each provide our personal weekly rankings of the movies and actors in the running, and then those results will be weighted and averaged to determine an official Movieline ranking for each category. Let’s begin: Best Director In terms of perception, the Best Director category has been fairly static for a while now, but that should change next week as Les Misérables   and Zero Dark Thirty   screen for critics and reaction to them begins to flow through the blogosphere. Up to this point, the strong standings of the directors of those films, respectively, Tom Hooper and Kathryn Bigelow , has been almost pure buzz, so their positions could rise or fall sharply once actual scenes and performances can be scrutinized. Until then, Steven Spielberg remains the auteur to beat despite Lincoln ‘s  at-times sloggy pace, and Ben Affleck is holding strong as his Argo continues to do well at the box office and on the word-of-mouth exchange.  The Master director Paul Thomas Anderson could use a Harvey Weinstein-style reheating,  and Ang Lee may need a different kind of PR campaign after he annoyed critics, including Movieline’s Alison Willmore  and the New York Times’ A.O. Scott ,, by undercutting the often-breathtaking visual narrative of Life of Pi with a cliched journalist-interviews-story-subject framing device. Hugh-larious! Amanda Seyfried Tells Vanity Fair About Hugh Jackman’s ‘Wildly Inappropriate’ Wit

Amanda Seyfried had fun on the set  of Les Misérables . In a photo feature shoot with Vanity Fair.com , the actress, who plays adopted daughter Cosette to  Hugh Jackman’s  Valjean, talks about how she and her co-star invented “alternative story lines that transformed their characters’ tender relationship into something altogether less innocent,” according to the website.  Seyfried, who shares what the magazine describes as Jackman’s “wildly inappropriate sense of humor,” , says, “We sexualized everything as much as we could. It was really funny, the moments we could find . . . It’s like every movie has another version, another satirical version of itself.” Hmm….wildly inappropriate sense of humor, huh? I’d say that makes Jackman a prime suspect in the international headlines-making James Marsden IMDb bio-tampering case that I wrote about on Nov. 14.   The Bachelorette actor told the Hollywood Reporter that “a famous actor friend of mine,” whom he would not finger by name, “likes to go into other people’s bios and add things,” which resulted in IMDb’s erroneous assertion that Marsden is a big Barry Manilow fan. While saying someone’s a fan of the “Mandy” man is not exactly wildly appropriate, it sure sounds like the kind of prank that a show-tunes loving actor like Jackman — who co-starred with Marsden in the X-Men films — might play on a pal. Ryan Gosling Don’t Look So Pretty In ‘Drive’ Director Winding Refn’s ‘Only God Forgives’

Nicolas Winding Refn has said that the The Texas Chainsaw Massacre inspired him to become a filmmaker. So we shouldn’t be surprised that Ryan Gosling appears to be sporting a quasi-Leatherface look in what may be a poster for Only God Forgives.  (Check it out after the jump.)  Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but the actor’s face does look pretty damn tore up. The Film Stage posted the image , which it indicates it received from a reader. Certainly, it doesn’t seem implausible as a poster. What better way to whip up interest in a film than to go with a poster that messes with Gosling’s pulse-quickening handsomeness . On Gosling and Winding Refn’s follow-up to their most excellent 2011 film  Drive ,   Only God Forgives is set in the Thai boxing underworld.  According to the Film Stage, this  is the synopsis: Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly. The fight scenes in this movie are apparently brutal and intense — as if the poster image doesn’t convey that — and, like Drive , Winding Refn sets many of his scenes to the kind of electronic music that gets under your skin and makes those shots even more emotionally palpable. Kendra Wilkinson Slams Kelsey Grammer as "Disgusting"

Kendra Wilkinson does not approve of Kelsey Grammer’s parenting choices. The former centerfold was asked about the sitcom star last night outside Lure nightclub in Hollywood, following Grammer’s appearance at a Halloween party this fall during which he brought his infant daughter to The Playboy Mansion . Wilkinson told TMZ she actually confronted Kesley at the shindig, adding that she was “disgusted” by the incident and: “He KNOWS how I feel, trust me… I gave him that eye and I left because of that.” Wilkinson, of course, has a young son of her own. Grammer, meanwhile, said he brought his kid to the affair because he didn’t have a babysitter . Totally normal, right? It’s not like he simply couldn’t have attended.
