Globes Analysis: Hooper, Russell, De Niro Snubbed & Is Waltz Really A Supporting Actor?

Early Thursday morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its Golden Globe nominees , and, as you might expect, there were some surprises. Thanks to the Academy’s decision to unveil its Oscar nominations on Jan. 10, three days before Globe winners are revealed on Jan. 13, today’s nominations will have less bearing than usual on Oscar jockeying.  But don’t let anyone kid you.  Academy voters may have nothing in common with HFPA members, but they aren’t impervious to the media’s perception of who’s hot, cold or no longer in the running. With that in mind, here are a few preliminary observations about the nominations: The snubs:  Although both  Les Misérables     and Silver Linings Playbook  were nominated in the Best Musical or Comedy Picture category, those films’ directors, respectively, Tom Hooper and David O. Russell were conspicuously absent from the Best Directors category. Robert De Niro , who does his best work in years in Playbook was also not nominated. Beasts of The Southern Wild  was shut out entirely, although I doubt that will be the case with the Academy.  In some ways, the biggest surprise of all was the cold shoulder that Skyfall got despite its critical acclaim and spectacular overseas box-office success. Adele’s theme song, Skyfall , was the FHPA’s only nod to the film. Dame Judi Dench is among the nominees, but for her work in  The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel . We at Movieline are also extremely disappointed that Matthew McConaughey was not nominated for Magic Mike. The surprises:   Salmon Fishing in the Yemen which netted nominations for Best Film, Actor ( Ewan McGregor ) and Actress ( Emily Blunt ) in the Comedy or Musical category.  (The film may not have done Skyfall numbers, but it also performed surprisingly well at the box office.) Nicole Kidman’s Supporting Actress nomination for The Paperboy should at least get Academy voters to consider or reconsider her performance. Meanwhile,   Rachel Weisz’s performance in The Deep Blue Sea is turning in to the most honored acting role that nobody saw, but that could be about to change. The Head Scratcher:   I realize that the title of Quentin Tarantino’s movie is not Dr. King Schultz Unchained , but it’s a damn shame that Christoph Waltz’s  extraordinary performance as the bounty hunter who frees Django and helps him locate his wife, has been relegated to the Supporting Actor category. Although Daniel Day-Lewis is probably going to win the Best Actor, Drama category, I actually think Waltz would have had a better shot in that race because his performance and Django Unchained are both very different from the other entries. In the supporting actor category, he and co-star  Leonardo DiCaprio will inevitably cancel each other out. Technicalities and politics be damned, Waltz’s performance is as crucial to the movie as Jamie Foxx’s, and I say he got robbed here. Sarah Jessica Parker Assistant Steals Sunglasses From Airport Shop, Delays Flight in Norway

An assistant of Sarah Jessica Parker is believed to have shoplifted a pair of sunglasses at an airport in Norway, and delayed a flight in the process as police intervened. The Sex And The City star and her entourage were boarding a United flight from Oslo to NYC when they were confronted by officials , according to news reports. The incident happened after an airport shop owner claimed the actress’ (probably now former) assistant had come in and ganked a pair of expensive shades. A settlement was reached and a $1,400 fine paid on the spot. Sarah and her assistant, who attended the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, are said to have eventually boarded the flight and returned to the United States.

Anne Hathaway Crotch Shot Photos Published, "Devastating" to Actress

With her critically-beloved performance in Les Miserables , Anne Hathaway hopes to soon be compared with stars such as Meryl Streep. Unfortunately for the actress, however, one mistake made this week has put her in the same class as Britney Spears instead. Hathaway was caught with her pants down yesterday… or her skirt up, to be more accurate, as the actress was snapped exiting a car, sans a shred of underwear. The New York Daily News has published the racy Hathaway photos in question, and also overheard the newlywed making it clear this was a regretful error. “I was getting out of the car and my dress was so tight that I didn’t realize it until I saw all the photographers’ flashes,” Hathaway told Vanity Fair writer Ingrid Sischy during lunch yesterday at the Four Seasons, adding: “It was devastating. They saw everything. I might as well have lifted up my skirt for them.” To paraphrase Hathaway’s famous character in Les Miserables , that would definitely be a dream many a man around the world has dreamed in times gone by.

Hugh Jackman Went A Little Wolverine On Tom Hooper To Land ‘Les Miserables’ Role

Hugh Jackman is known for his love of a good musical as much as he’s known for his portrayal of the adamantium-reinforced wise-ass Wolverine . So, it’s no surprise that he used a bit of the latter character’s blunt persuasiveness to land the part of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables . At a press conference for  the hotly anticipated musical at Claridge’s on Wednesday, Jackman recalled that upon hearing from his agent that a film adaptation of the vaunted musical was in the works, he began to lobby for the part. Director Tom Hooper had barely had the chance to unpack his best director Oscar from The King’s Speech , let alone formally announce his next project, when Jackman called to arrange a meeting. Upon meeting Hooper, Jackman didn’t mince words. The straight-talking Aussie told the British filmmaker: “Mate, I’m going to audition for you,” and persisted with both Hooper and Les Misérables ’ legendary theater producer, Sir Cameron MacKintosh until the deal was sealed. “I’ve dreamt of being in a movie musical for a long time. For some reason I never even thought Les Mis would be possible,” Jackman said. “It was so iconic, the role wasn’t even on my radar.” Once cast, Jackman said that Hooper issued a clear directive to him about his coming portrayal of Valjean: “I want you unrecognizable. If you’re recognizable, I want your friends to think you’re sick,” the director told him. Upon which Jackman lost around 15 kilos (33lb) — more weight than Anne Hathaway  shed for her role of Fantine, as the actress pointed out following a New York screening in November — to shoot the movie’s opening scenes as an emaciated prisoner. Jackman later gorged to regain the weight for following scenes, gleefully stating, “That bit was fun by the way!” Jackman insisted that Les Misérables  has been the most physically demanding role he has ever tackled. It seems giving Eddie Redmayne a fireman’s lift while wading through the movie equivalent of chin-high sewage (in reality, watery peat), remains a prominent struggle in the then rehabilitated-man-mountain’s mind, “It was very, very cold, and Eddie, a very trim guy, is not a light as he looks, let me tell you! I constantly wanted to call for a double.” Alas, Jackman said, Hooper wasn’t up for that. As a regular performer on the musical scene, the physical requirements of the role were no surprise to Jackman, “It’s weird coming from me, who’s played Wolverine, or has been in other action movies, you’d probably think, ‘at least a musical is going to be easy.’ But anyone who’s done a musical knows; whether you’re dancing or not, physically it’s the most difficult thing you can do. “Singing is incredibly physical. All of those things combined, as well as emotionally and vocally, it’s the most challenging thing, and usually all at once. It’s the kind of thing you want as an actor. You want to feel challenged. It’s good to feel uncomfortable. “I’m really grateful, that’s the overwhelming feeling.” A head-strong actor with a passion for both musical and action genres — does anyone see a hybrid movie on the horizon, The Sound of Mutants perhaps? Les Misérables  opens in U.S. theaters on December 25.
