Playboy Offends Itself in ‘Shocking Breach’ of Standards

It must be difficult to offend a company that makes its money off pictures of naked women (to be fair, there are also articles … apparently). The folks at Playboy Portugal managed to do just that. On Wednesday, news broke that the Portuguese edition of Playboy magazine published several photographs depicting Jesus Christ observing pornographic scenes . On Thursday, the parent company, which licenses the Playboy name to international publishers, distanced itself from the controversy. “We did not see or approve the cover and pictorial in the July issue of Playboy Portugal,” Playboy’s vice president of public relations, Theresa Hennessy, reportedly told the gossip blog Gawker in an email. “It is a shocking breach of our standards, and we would not have allowed it to be published if we had seen it in advance. Hennessy told Gawker the magazine would be “terminating our agreement” with the Portuguese publisher. ( Visit Gawker for the full statement . Content warning: some readers may find Gawker’s photo offensive.) As of Friday morning, however, the Playboy website still listed Playboy Portugal among its 27 international editions.

Progress for Ohio’s Farmed Animals | Landmark Agreement Addresses Cruel Factory Farming Practices | Thank You, Mercy for Animals!

“Dear Friends, Today great progress was made to lessen the suffering of millions of farmed animals in Ohio – progress that is a direct result of the tireless effort of our volunteers and supporters. For months, Mercy For Animals has been on the ground, in the streets, and behind-the-scenes working diligently to mobilize support and gather signatures as part of the Ohioans for Humane Farm's campaign to place an initiative on the November ballot that would phase out cruel factory farming practices in the state. Just recently, once it became known that animal advocates had gathered enough signatures to put the initiative on the ballot, animal agriculture finally agreed to discuss meaningful reforms. And on June 30th, just hours before over 500,000 signatures were slated to be filed, a major animal protection agreement was reached – preventing costly and contentious campaigning. On that day, a landmark settlement was reached between animal protection advocates, Gov. Ted Strickland, and the Ohio agribusiness lobby. The agreement includes recommendations from all of the parties for the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board, the Legislature, and the Governor to adopt the following provisions: * A ban on veal crates effective in 2017, the same year provided in the ballot measure. * A ban on new gestation crates in the state after Dec. 31, 2010. Existing facilities are grandfathered, but must cease use of these crates within 15 years. * A moratorium on permits for new battery cage confinement facilities for laying hens. * Regulations regarding the manner in which sick and injured farmed animals can be killed, including a ban on strangulation. * A ban on the transport of downer cows for slaughter. * Enactment of legislation establishing felony-level penalties for cockfighters. * Enactment of legislation cracking down on puppy mills. * A ban on the acquisition of dangerous exotic animals as pets, such as primates, bears, lions, tigers, large constricting and venomous snakes, crocodiles and alligators. While this agreement puts a hold on the planned anti-factory farming initiative for this fall's ballot, the gathered signatures still remain valid for years to come – giving us the option to go back to the ballot if the terms of the agreement are not fulfilled. Mercy For Animals will continue to work diligently to protect Ohio's farmed animals from cruelty, hold abusers accountable, educate the public on farmed animal issues, and advocate for stricter state and federal laws. This landmark, hard-fought progress for Ohio's animals would not have been possible without the determined, selfless, and inspiring work of hundreds of volunteers and supporters. Truly, because of you, we have moved our society toward a kinder future for animals. Sincerely Nathan Runkle Executive Director” Mercy for Animals added by: EthicalVegan

‘World’s Biggest’ Forest Protection Deal for Canada

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10123210.stm Timber companies and environment groups including Greenpeace, Canopy, and ForestEthics have unveiled an agreement aimed at protecting two-thirds of Canada's vast forests from unsustainable logging. Over 72 million hectares are included in what will become the world's largest commercial forest conservation deal. Logging will be totally banned on some of the land, in the hope of sustaining endangered caribou populations. Timber companies hope the deal will bring commercial gains, as timber buyers seek higher ethical standards. The total protected area is about twice the size of Germany, and equals the area of forest lost globally between 1990 and 2005. “The importance of this agreement cannot be overstated,” said Avrim Lazar, president and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC). “We're thrilled that this effort has led to the largest commercial forest conservation plan in history,” said Steve Kallick of Pew Environment Group. “Together we have identified a more intelligent, productive way to manage economic and environmental challenges in the Boreal [Forest] that will reassure global buyers of our products' sustainability.” The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA) brings together FPAC's 21 member companies and nine environment groups, many of which have fought a bitter battle against what they have sometimes criticised as rapacious logging. As part of the agreement, those groups have agreed to suspend criticism of the industry and calls for boycotts. The Pew Environment Group, which has worked for about a decade on trying to “green” Canada's forestry, said it was “excited” by the agreement. “We're thrilled that this effort has led to the largest commercial forest conservation plan in history, which could not have happened without both sides looking beyond their differences,” said Steve Kallick, director of Pew's International Boreal Conservation Campaign. Pew notes that the total area covered by the deal is larger than in some agreements currently feted as global leaders, such as the Brazilian Amazon Region Protected Areas project. Throughout the protected lands – which run right across the country from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts – companies and environment groups are pledging to work together to implement “world-leading forest management and harvesting practices”. The effects of forest protection on wildlife, particularly caribou, will be monitored; and timber will be certified as coming from sustainable sources. Pew believes the agreement could be a template for future forest agreements in other parts of the world, as industry leaders respond to an increasingly environmentally-aware public. “There is a recognition that this is how forestry will be done in the 21st Century, and there's a great interest in getting ahead of the rest of the industry,” Mr Kallick told BBC News. The agreement at present covers companies and environment groups; both parties are looking now for backing and reinforcement from governments. In the Canadian system that means the national and provincial authorities, and “First Nation” governments of indigenous groups, some of which have already indicated their support. added by: captainplanet71

Gilbert Arenas Sentenced to Probation in Gun Case

Washington Wizards All-Star guard Gilbert Arenas was sentenced on Friday to two years’ probation for a gun-toting standoff in the NBA team’s locker room. The judge showed leniency to Arenas, who avoided serving jail time after pleading guilty to felony weapons possession for bringing four guns to work. Arenas must spend 30 days in a halfway house, perform 400 hours’ community service and contribute at least $5,000 to a fund for violent crime victims. The judge said he accepted responsibility , was genuinely remorseful, and was a “decent person” who performed acts of charity and kindness to strangers. Arenas, wearing a dark suit and tie while showing no emotion, admitted his acts were “stupid and irresponsible. I am very sorry that this all happened.” BANG, BANG : Gilbert Arenas won’t be doing time for packing heat, but he won’t be suiting up with his Washington Wizards teammates anytime soon . Under a plea deal, prosecutors agreed not to seek more than six months in jail for Arenas. But the judge in the case was not bound by the agreement and could have sentenced him to as little as probation or up to five years in prison. Prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Kavanaugh, had recommended that Arenas, 28, receive three months of incarceration, three years of probation and be required to do 300 hours of community service. Kavanaugh told the judge Arenas had been convicted of a similar gun offense previously, that he gave multiple versions of the event, that he attempted to hide the truth and had failed to show genuine remorse. But it was not to be.

The White House hopes the agreement, which will pick up where the old Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty left off, will set the stage for more ambitious cuts in the future.
