Snoop Dogg, DPGC Reminisce About Doggystyle Before Sequel

‘ Doggystyle was another way for us to be seen and heard again,’ Snoop tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Snoop Dogg Photo: Getty Images Cornerstone Credentials: Snoop Dogg and the DPGC A few days ago, Snoop Dogg announced that his next LP will be Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. And while the 1515 Boys can’t claim 100 percent responsibility for Don Kinging the situation, we’ll take a little credit. A couple of weeks ago, during Rock the Bells rehearsals, the big homie Sway put it in the air while talking to Snoop, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, Lady of Rage, RBX and Warren G. When Sway asked Snoop if having his crew back together for the concerts meant getting everyone back on one album again, the Dogg said: “Nothing can stop that. The rebirth! It’s done. We’re gonna try to be out before Detox so we can help Dr. Dre speed up the process.” Having the old gang in tow sparked plenty of memories for Snoop about the original album, his debut solo classic. “The Chronic album, we felt that was our album,” Snoop thought back. “We gave Dr. Dre our full attention and our soul and devotion. Everything we wanted to say, we said. He gave us the platform to do that. So we felt that was our album. Then when Doggystyle came out, we felt like it was our record again. ‘We get to do it with Snoop and he’s gonna really involve us. He’s not gonna be like Dr. Dre and be such a perfectionist. Snoop’s gonna bring us all in the studio and Dre is gonna fine-tune it and make it sound like how it’s supposed to sound.’ A lot of records didn’t sound like they sound on the album in the beginning. Warren G brought a lot of tracks to the table that were halfway right. Dre made ’em all the way right. Same with Daz, same with other producers. … Doggystyle was another way for us to be seen and heard again. We followed that up with Tha Dogg Pound album and ‘Murder Was the Case’ soundtrack.” Snoop officially announced Swizz Beatz as a producer on the album, and the way the love was flowing with Dogg and his musical family, we’re already anticipating the DPGC as guests, just like the old days. “This is nostalgia,” Rage said. “It’s like going back to Solar Studios. Popeye’s Chicken on the corner. Eight of us sharing a three-piece meal. Smoking, drinking, fussing! Not too much fussin’. I’m beatboxing, Snoop’s rhyming. Daz rhyming. Kurupt’s rhyming. RBX. When RBX came on the set, he was like, ‘Yeah, I’m signed to Death Row.’ I was like, ‘Who said so?’ I was all defensive and sh–, like, ‘Now everybody wants to be on Death Row. Who are you?’ Little did I know.” “The battles were epic, man,” RBX offered about the siblings’ ciphers. “I used to crave that. It kept you sharp. Me watching all the old kung fu flicks, I always felt like you had to stay sharp and that was through walking through the fire. Whether it be Snoop walking through the fire and I’m judging. Kurupt walking through the fire … ” “Me, I was into eating people alive,” Kurupt jumped in. “If Dogg said get ’em, I got ’em. It’s over. Game of death.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Snoop Dogg DPGC

‘Glee’ Star Matthew Morrison Teams With JC Chasez For Solo Album

Actor gets help from former ‘NSYNC-er for ‘Dancing in the Rain.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Matthew Morrison Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images It’s no Acafellas reunion, but “Glee” star Matthew Morrison says he hooked up with former boy bander JC Chasez for one of the tracks on his solo album, which he plans to release next year. “I wrote about half the album so far, but I’ve definitely co-wrote. I’ve definitely teamed up with some great producers, some great songwriters,” he teased MTV News at the “Glee” season two premiere party on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. “And yeah, I just did this great song last week with JC Chasez that was very, very cool. It turned out really well. He’s such a good songwriter.” While the details of the collaboration with the former ‘NSYNC member are scant, Morrison (who plays glee club coach Will Schuester on the show) did share the name of the track. “It’s called ‘Dancing in the Rain,’ not ‘Singing in the Rain,’ but ‘Dancing in the Rain.’ ” Morrison shared that he’s got some other collaborations on the album, but wouldn’t name names. “It’s very eclectic. I’m doing some great duets. I can’t release who they’re with yet, [but it’s] some people that you’ve probably heard of before, that you’ve definitely heard of before.” Fans of “Glee,” which returns to Fox on September 21, shouldn’t be surprised to learn what Morrison’s album will sound like. “It’s gonna be a little adult contemporary,” he said. “And there’s gonna be some pop songs that you can shake your money maker to in the club.” And while Morrison’s co-stars may be presenting an award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, he’s got even bigger plans following his album’s release. “I’m hoping to perform at the VMAs next year!” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. 30 Seconds To Mars Win Their War: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Take a look back at Jared Leto and company’s road to the 2010 VMAs. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds To Mars Photo: MTV News The success of 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War album is as much a tribute to the band’s unyielding dedication as it is to their general insanity. After all, they were, for a long while, a band without a home — having been famously sued for $30 million by their label, Virgin Records — or a plan ( Jared Leto told MTV News that he intended to sell their still-unfinished album “door to door”) if the band couldn’t rectify things with Virgin). Of course, we all know how the story ends. After a long wait, War hit stores in December, spawned two hit singles and served as the launching pad for 30 Seconds to Mars’ ever-growing world tour. Perhaps as a tribute to their unwavering commitment, the band was honored with four nominations at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , including nods for Best Rock Video and Video of the Year. (Nominations they promise to celebrate with a very unique arrival at the show on September 12 .) It was a pretty nice reward for all their struggles, and though everything is right in the 30 STM universe these days, that wasn’t always the case. So with the VMAs just around the corner, we decided to take a look back at the band’s long and bloody battle for their future. There’s a reason they decided to call their album This Is War, after all. In 2009, things were pretty bleak, but rather than be deterred by a mega lawsuit and an uncertain future, 30 Seconds to Mars never backed down . Instead, they pressed on with the album bringing in Kanye West , holding fan-only recording sessions , importing Tibetan monks . They made This Is War bigger and badder, despite the very real possibility that it might never see the light of day. It was either a labor of love or an exercise in lunacy. Maybe both. Eventually, things reached a breaking point. In the spring of 2009, 30STM’s lawsuit was settled, in an effort to “make peace, to move ahead and begin again.” And work began on finally bringing This Is War home. Of course, just because they’d made peace with their label, that didn’t mean they were going to change the way they’d operated throughout the creation of their album … quite the opposite, in fact. Emboldened, they set out to make things even bigger than before. In October 2009, with the release of War still some two months off, they began working on their epic “Kings and Queens” video , a massive, sprawling thing that saw the band — and an army of their Critical Mass cohorts — take over the streets of Los Angeles, riding en masse while the city slept. It was a project of such scale that Jared Leto (who directed under his “Bartholomew Cubbins” alter ego) almost didn’t finish the thing, and “Queens” was literally in the edit room until hours before it premiered. His hard work would be rewarded, as the song — and video — would both hit big, and, in February 30STM prepared to launch their Into the Wild world tour . In April, with the North American leg of the jaunt just around the corner, they shot another epic video, for the album’s title track. Featuring Leto and his mates in army fatigues and body armor, “War” looked like a suitable follow-up to “Kings and Queens.” Only, months passed, and to date, the video has yet to premiere . By this point, of course, the band was practically impervious to struggle, so rather than continue to wait for “War” to be completed, they decided to shoot yet another video, a downright spiritual live clip for “Closer to the Edge.” . They just set off across North America once again, and there are plans to release a pair of films — one documenting the making of the This Is War album, and a second about the Into the Wild tour — in the near future. And, yes, Leto says that someday, the “War” video will see the light of day. No matter what it takes to get it done. Conflict is nothing new for his band, after all. As their success seems to prove, they practically thrive on it. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12. Rihanna Set To Premiere ‘Only Girl (In The World)’

New single, produced by Stargate, will premiere Tuesday on RyanSeacrest.com. By James Dinh Rihanna Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ WireImage Rihanna may be in the midst of filming “Battleship,” her Hollywood debut, but that doesn’t mean that the pop star won’t be focusing on her music. Just less than a year after the release of her last album, Rated R, the singer is already set to debut a new single called “Only Girl (In the World)” from her fifth studio album. The song, which was produced by Stargate, will premiere on Tuesday (September 7) on RyanSeacrest.com at 3 a.m. PT/6 a.m. ET. This isn’t the first time the Barbadian songstress has worked with the Norwegian producing team. She has collaborated with the duo on earlier hits including “Please Don’t Stop the Music,” “Hate That I Love You” and, most recently, “Rude Boy.” Just days after joining Twitter, the singer hinted at the single in a tweet directed at Seacrest. “@RyanSeacrest Soon! In less than 10 dayz ima send u sumn special, and ur gonna play it OVER and OVER, like I’m the only girl in the world!” she said. In addition to Stargate, the singer has also been working with Sean Garrett. Back in June, the producer spoke to MTV News about the new album, which he said is going to be more uplifting than the darker material on Rated R. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett told MTV News. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about.” While not much else is known about the project, Rihanna has also reportedly recorded a song called “Cheers,” with production by the Runners. DJ Khaled Says An Eminem Collabo Would ‘Rip The Streets Apart’

‘Let’s make history,’ the Miami super-DJ reaches out to Slim Shady for We the Best Forever. ‘I got the beat right now.’ By Shaheem Reid DJ Khaled Photo: Ben Rose/ Getty Images DJ Khaled is in the production stage of his upcoming LP, We the Best Forever. He has beats cooking every night in the We the Best studio in Miami. But while most of the people he wants on this project already have solid relationships with the mogul DJ, there is one MC he’s never met — nor done a song with — and he needs him to be a part of the movement. “The list goes on and on,” Khaled said after rattling off some of the names of his past collaborators, including Kanye West, Jay-Z, the Birdman, Lil Wayne, T.I. and Akon. “This album I’m working with them boys again. It’s gonna get bigger and bigger. The collaboration I want to make happen and the people want to make happen is a DJ Khaled/ Eminem collaboration. I know if I get with Eminem and put him on one of my anthems … ’cause I make these anthems. I got something so special in my drive that for Eminem on there.” He added that if Em doesn’t want to team up off the strength of Khaled’s track record alone, then he should do it for hip-hop. “We’re doing it for hip-hop. We doing this for hip-hop,” Khaled told MTV News emphatically. ‘I’m a big fan of his. I don’t have a way to contact him. I don’t know how I can sit down and play him some music; whatever I gotta do. Eminem, I got love. I wanna make this crazy record with you. Let’s make history. Let’s rip the streets apart. I got the idea already [that] I wanna do with Slim Shady. I got the beat right now, so crazy, the concept. It’s something the people are gonna love too. If I get Slim Shady on this joint, I’mma tear up the streets. “The album is called We The Best Forever. There’s only certain people who could be on this album,” he said. “It’s time, I think I deserve it. The streets deserve it. When [Eminem] meets me personally, he’s gonna see this energy. He’s gonna understand why these anthems come out like that. I’m gonna sit with him, and we gonna vibe. I know what he’s gonna do: He’s gonna go crazy!” Khaled recently signed a recording deal with his good friends Birdman and Slim, the CEOs of Cash Money Records. “I’m so excited about life, making music, excited to put my album out on Cash Money. I’ve always been excited to make music and make these hits. This album is coming out crazy already and I’m excited. All my albums, me personally, I feel they’re super-big and classic. Every year I have one big record that’s huge, anthemic.” Should Eminem jump on the Miami don’s next album? Tell us what you think in the comments! Related Artists DJ Khaled Eminem

2AM Club Hook Up With Kanye West Producer No ID For Debut

L.A. band is set to release What Did You Think Was Going To Happen? in September. By Jocelyn Vena 2AM Club Photo: MTV News This September, L.A. outfit 2AM Club will release their debut studio album, What Did You Think Was Going To Happen? and for it, the guys hit the studio with a number of top-grade producers including former Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison and hip-hop producer No ID , who they say helped shape one “ridiculous” track for their album. “The beginning of the No ID collaboration is he had a track [and] we did our album with an A&R guy named Peter Edge, who worked with Alicia keys and D’Angelo and has done a bunch of amazing records over the last few years,” 2 AM-er Tyler Cordy explained to MTV News. “And we just heard it one day and it was ridiculous. And it always had been there.” So, after thinking it over, the guys decided to revisit the song for the album. “And we heard it and we kind of went back months later and [were like], ‘What happened to the No ID beat?’ … So we got in the studio and hashed out this song, ‘Make You Mine.’ The track turned out ridiculous.” The guys not only hooked up with the hip-hop producer for the track, they also left sunny California to record the album in very chilly New York City. It was a refreshing change. “We had a bunch of demos written when we were leaving L.A. And then, hooking up with our team, they extended the hand [to come to NYC],” Cordy explained. “We never really lived on the East Coast, and we wrote in Brooklyn and spent a number of cold, cold winter months [there]. It gave the record two different angles.” Bandmate Marc Griffin explained that this album means the world to the group. “We’ve been writing it our whole lives,” he said. “It’s about love and heartbreak and nighttime and leaving home.” Related Artists 2AM Club No ID Kanye West

Bow Wow Wants To Become An ‘Artist’s Artist’ With Greenlight 3

‘I’ve accomplished more than a lot of cats in hip-hop who get that recognition,’ Bow tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Bow Wow Photo: MTV News Monday’s Main Pick Street Star : Bow Wow Holding It Down For : Cash Money Mixtape : Greenlight 3 Real Spit : Bow Wow’s Greenlight 3 has a yellow light for now. Bow definitely plans to put it out, but he’s delaying it for a couple of weeks. He wanted to let his film “Lottery Ticket” breathe before he dropped his new project. “It’s important for me to do the Greenlight mixtape, because the fans want it. Where I got the title, the whole Greenlight title came from Jermaine [Dupri],” Bow explained. “He was gonna name his album Greenlight. I asked him: ‘What you gonna do with it?’ I took it and ran with it and created a brand. G1 set the tone. G2, I told you, it did a million downloads in a day. I never knew it was gonna be like that. I didn’t know if it’s me signing to Cash Money or because it was free. This is the third one, and it’s the last one. And it’s gonna complete the series. ” Greenlight 3 has 12 original records. It’s gonna sound like a brand-new album,” he added. “It’s easy to take a verse and put it on whatever’s hot. To make songs, that’s what a lot of artists or MCs have a hard time with. Making records. I did it this time for it to be original, because you see what’s going on with Chris [Brown] and the ‘Deuces’ record. That’s off the mixtape, what you think is off an album. I did that intentionally, because I could probably have three singles — which I do. I feel like I got three singles off the G3. G3 is to prepare people of what’s to come from the album.” Joints to Check For
