Andrew Jackson Music – Another Day of Misery

Show your support to an up and coming independent artist Andrew Jackson. http://www.andrewjacksonrock.net Another day of misery, brought to me by the powers that be. Another day of misery, Just you and me. All of my life I tried to remember The messages in the air. The smilers will ask you to surrender… But did you read the whole story Before you made up your mind? Did you buy the blind glory Or did you read between lies? My hands are tingling; The room is spinning. I'm angry when I'm fainting sometimes. I'm focused on standing, A task so demanding, As the color melts away. Whoahoh I'll think of you From a time before I knew. When it's all said and done tomorrow, You'll love your servitude. From the album Feral Familiar by andrewjackson. added by: critic

Eminem’s Recovery: What Is The Secret Of Its Success?

Experts point to radio hits and a starved fanbase as the main factors. By Paul Cantor Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Eminem is dominating the charts like it’s 2000 all over again, when his second album, The Marshall Mathers LP, spent eight weeks at the top spot on Billboard ‘s top 200 and went on to sell 9 million copies in the United States alone. His latest LP, Recovery, isn’t as big of a blockbuster just yet, but in the current music-industry climate, it’s killing. The album has spent seven non-consecutive weeks at #1, the first hip-hop act to do so since Outkast’s double-LP Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in late 2003/ early 2004. A lot of Eminem’s chart success can be attributed to a very old-school source: radio hits. His first two singles, “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” have been staples on top 40 stations since they dropped. “Radio still makes hits, and hits make artists relevant outside of their core consumer base,” Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. “That’s why you see that aberration in Em’s sales on Recovery vs. Relapse. To a 16-year-old, Eminem was bordering on being their older brother/ sister’s favorite artist, but ‘Love the Way You Lie’ has not only re-excited Em’s existing fans — now mostly in their mid-20s to mid-40s — but reintroduced him to new generation of teenagers for whom Relapse didn’t register.” New York Times music writer Jon Caramanica for thinks Em’s fanbase has also been starved. In a sense, they’ve been waiting for something worth buying from him. “Eminem has been around for long enough to develop different pockets of fans: total loyalists, casual listeners, people who like only specific songs or sorts of songs,” he explained. “That he’s continuing to sell week after week is reflective of the fact that all of these groups don’t get activated at the same time. There are still people out there who might buy an Eminem album but haven’t, and each week, it seems, a few more do.” But can Em’s reign at the top continue? “I believe Em has a couple more weeks on top of the charts, even if he gets knocked out of #1 a few times before October 1st,” Vibe Editorial Director Datwon Thomas said. “He has two mega-concerts where he’s headlining a hometown show with Jay-Z in Detroit and then opening for Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium in New York. The amount of media and fan fervor for these events alone will spur people to grab both artists’ albums from their respective catalogs. [And] if Em can build on that momentum and release another smash of a hit from this album, he’ll be OK well into the holiday season.” Working his album through Christmas seems like it might be an option, if only because his record label, Aftermath/Interscope, appears committed to going the whole 12 rounds with Recovery. “Nowadays, [labels] push [albums] until the first-week sales and then generally abandon ship,” Callahan-Bever said. “With Recovery, it’s clear that Interscope knew they had a record with legs and went out of their way to push it. ‘Love the Way You Lie’ just connects to people in that really special, emotive way that only one or two pop songs a year do, and that is just undeniable.” Will Eminem rule the charts until Christmas? ‘We knocked down the door,’ Phife Dawg tells MTV News at Rock the Bells stop. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Shaheem Reid Q-Tip and Phife Dawg perform at Rock the Bells Sunday Photo: Getty Images Making The Moment: Midnight Marauders A Tribe Called Quest pulled off the rare feat of dropping back-to-back-to-back classic albums in the early 1990s, with People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, The Low End Theory, and Midnight Mauraders. But while they were creating those masterpieces, they were fully unaware of the impact the group was having on hip-hop. According to Phife Dawg, ATCQ were just concerned with keeping the momentum going from one project to the next. “Gotta keep it coming,” he told MTV News. ” People’s Instinctive, we knocked down the door. Low End Theory, we knocked it off the hinges. And we just had to skyrocket after that. I don’t think we thought about it that much; we just decided to be ourselves and have fun with it. But I remember us saying to each other, ‘Let’s not make this a conceptual album — let’s just have fun. Rhyme over these beats and do what we do.’ But one important thing that we always had in mind was how the album would be sequenced, and I think that’s what really made the album banging.” While the four-man collective — Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheem Muhammad and Jarobi — didn’t realize yet the place they were carving out in music history, as they reflected on their careers, Tribe, touring this month on the Rock the Bells trek, said they understand the benchmarks they’ve achieved. And in particular, the influence they’ve had on a bevy of MCs, from Lupe Fiasco to J.Cole to Kid Cudi, all whom have burrowed from Tribe’s rythmic sound and everyman raps. Tribe’s DJ and one of the group’s core producers, Ali Shaheed, said he wished there were even more room for acts with that kind of artistic slant. “There are a lot of people who are bringing a lot of technique and style out there,” he said. “Hip-hop is different these days. One thing that’s missing is that there used to be a plethora [of diverse acts]. It only feels like just a handful on the mainstream level that’s impacting, like Drake, Lupe, Kid Cudi. They each have their own fanbase, which says a lot, that people are opening their minds to follow artists like that. But I would like to see a whole lot more. There was dozens of dozens of groups making an impact when we were out there. It’d be nice to see that again on a mainstream level.” Which up-and-coming MCs most remind you of A Tribe Called Quest? Swizz Beatz Talks ‘Going Into Overdrive’ To ‘Make The Best’ Records

‘When you’re working on albums, nobody sleeps,’ the energetic producer says of projects with Kanye West, Mary J. Blige and more. By Jayson Rodriguez Swizz Beatz Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Swizz Beatz has been busy in the studio lately, working on numbers for Kanye West, N.E.R.D., Mary J. Blige and, of course, his own solo album, Haute Living. The multiplatinum producer has been tweeting about his long nights recently, but he told MTV News that when you’re inspired by a project, there’s just no sleep until completion. “When you’re working on albums, nobody sleeps,” he explained of all the work piled on his plate. “The excitement of being in the moment of music and having that pressure on you — you got a lot of people waiting on that project, you not gonna sleep either. You want to get it right in your mind, [so] you don’t have an appetite, you’re not tired. You go into overdrive … to make the best thing possible. “That shows how it goes when you work with real artists, you work until it’s done,” Swizz added. “Sometimes it gets overdone [ Laughs ].” Over the weekend, Swizz and Blige connected in the studio and completed four records, according to the Ruff Ryder alum’s Twitter messages. He told MTV News that at least one of the songs would see the light of day this week. While Swizz said he’s producing a number of songs for her new project, he also revealed that Blige might appear on one track from his forthcoming LP. While holed up in a New York studio earlier this month, Swizz managed to collaborate with Kanye West on his “Power” remix. His studio session with Pharrell happened to overlap with Kanye’s and the three producers wound up working on one another’s projects by the end of the night, Swizz said. “We were in there working on multiple things, [Kanye] was working on a song for my album, I was working with N.E.R.D. in another room for their album, and then the ‘Power’ remix was still in the works,” Swizz explained. “So, at the end of the night, everybody just ended up in both rooms. It was just going from one joint to the other and everyone showing respect to everyone’s craft. It was super-dope.” Who else would you like to hear on a Swizz Beatz collabo? Eminem’s Recovery Continues To Make Chart History

Em’s latest has topped Billboard albums chart for seven of its nine weeks out. By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic In these rather dire times, when album sales continue to plummet and ringtones seem to be the driving force of the music industry, there are still, on occasion, old-school bright spots: artists and albums that seemingly defy the odds and continue to move units, week after week. Eminem is officially one of those bright spots, because once again, his Recovery sits atop the Billboard albums chart , the seventh week it’s held the #1 position in its nine weeks of release. (And if it weren’t for those meddling kids in Avenged Sevenfold and the Arcade Fire , Em probably would have gone nine-for-nine.) The list of accomplishments doesn’t stop there. Recovery sold more than 741,000 copies in its first week of release , giving Eminem not only the year’s biggest debut, but the biggest opening-week numbers of any artist since 2008. To date, Recovery has sold more than 2.2 million copies, which already makes it the second-highest-selling album released in 2010. And in the nine weeks since it was released, the album has yet to fall any lower than #2 on the Billboard chart. So, clearly, we are witnessing something pretty remarkable here. Historical, even. According to Billboard, the album’s seven non-consecutive weeks at #1 are the most for any album since Taylor Swift’s Fearless held the top spot for 11 non-consecutive weeks in late 2008/ early 2009. Recovery ‘s seven weeks at #1 are the most for any male artist since Usher’s Confessions, which earned nine weeks atop the chart in 2004, and the most for any hip-hop album since Outkast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below held the top spot for seven weeks in late 2003 and early 2004. It’s likely that Recovery will fall to #3 on next week’s Billboard chart, as it faces tough challenges from Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Fantasia’s Back to Me. But following that onslaught, who’s to say it can’t reclaim the top spot? At this point, we’re not willing to bet against Eminem (or his remarkable album). And who knows? With a little bit of luck — and some endurance — perhaps Recovery can lay claim to the most weeks at #1 of any album released in the SoundScan era. The “Bodyguard” soundtrack holds that record (20 weeks), and while Whitney Houston probably isn’t quaking in her boots just yet, Em’s definitely going to make it interesting. Do you think Recovery has what it takes to top the “Bodyguard” soundtrack? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos A Decade Of Eminem At The VMAs Related Artists Eminem

How Rock The Bells Tour Lineup Came To Fruition

‘It’s something you see classic rock bands do,’ tour organizer Chang Weisberg says of artists like Snoop Dogg playing their entire albums. By Shaheem Reid Snoop Dogg Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images When you initially looked at this year’s Rock the Bells Tour lineup , it seemed almost too good to be true. It’s not like fans didn’t have faith in the outing’s promoters, Guerilla Union — they’ve delivered time and time again. Acts such as Nas, Rage Against the Machine, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes and two of this year’s headliners, A Tribe Called Quest and the Wu-Tang Clan , have all stepped foot on the main stage in the previous six outings of RTB. Still, the tour this year is more than historic. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime epic, as the artists are performing their classic albums in their entireties. Slick Rick has been performing his The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, Rakim does Paid in Full, Lauryn Hill does selections from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill as well as the Fugees’ The Score. Want more? KRS-One perform Boogie Down Productions’ Criminal Minded, the Wu do Enter the 36 Chambers, Tribe do Midnight Marauders and Snoop Dogg closes it out with Doggystyle. To see all of those classics, all of those LPs, which could easily make up a Best 10 Rap Albums of All-Time list, be performed within a 12-hour span, is absolutely surreal. The tour kicked off on Saturday night in San Bernardino, and for many fans, it was like seeing the soundtrack to their lives right in front of their faces. “This is something we had thrown around for a while,” Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union, the tour’s organizer and promoter, said last week in Los Angeles. “We’d been talking about it for awhile with the squad. It became a reality during last year’s Smoke Out [festival]. Cypress Hill did Black Sunday in it’s entirety for the Smoke Out. It went over so crazy, that was the solidifying moment when we said we’ve definitely gotta do this for Rock the Bells. We talked to managers and artists immediately, seeing if people were really into it. Any time you’re sitting around and talking about Rock the Bells, you’re talking about what these kids are dreaming about. It’s always a question, whose record is better? What’s a top five record? Who’s the top five MC? Then, when you throw it in all together and couple it with what are the most classic records of all time, it was undeniable. “It’s something you see classic rock bands do,” Chang added. “Like, you see Pink Floyd do The Wall. Or outside of the hip-hop genre, it’s something that might be a lot more common. Here, it’s an opportunity to do a whole new reign. Kids are already saying ‘we wanna see Illmatic or Paul’s Boutique. People weren’t thinking like that. As a promoter, I don’t think I’ve asked artists ‘Would you do this song?’ as opposed to ‘Would you do this whole record?’ Fortunately, we were close enough to these camps that they knew we were serious and it would be an amazing thing if we could pull it off.” Snoop Dogg, who’s the last act to perform every night on his year’s tour, says he was excited to be a part of this event. “I was a fan of KRS and Rakim and Eric B and Slick Rick. All the rappers that’s getting down before me and whatnot. I’m thinking I’m opening up for them,” Snoop, surrounded by Daz, Kurupt, Lady of Rage, DJ Battlecat, Warren G and RBX, said. “I grew up buying their records and being fans of theirs. It’s an honor to be on the same stage with them. When [Guerilla Union] asked, I said I’m rolling. They told me what it was. I said I don’t want to just get onstage and perform my album, I wanna make it an experience. I wanna bring out the theatrics to the album. Doggystyle is like a journey. I want people to see it and feel it and when they leave be like ‘We seen a movie.’ ” Snoop definitely goes hard in the paint with mini-movies, a live band and, of course, his crew from the album. Probably the most surprising act for people to see is Lauryn Hill. For the past decade, her music releases and stage appearances have been kept at a minimum. Chang says he and his company were lucky enough to have close ties with the music legend. “We were blessed in that we’ve worked with Lauryn for a number of years and we’ve stayed close with her and her camp,” he explained. “Ultimately, she’s in a space where she’s excited about music. Her children are old enough where she can hit the road comfortably. We are very fortunate she decided to do it. We always hold Lauryn as one of the best MCs of all time. It was awesome when she said she would do it. She sat with it for a while. At the end of the day, we were fortunate she agreed to do it.” As huge as the talent pool of this year’s Rock the Bells is, it originally had yet another timeless act scheduled for the tour. “The first confirmation for Rock the Bells, it’s no secret, it was Run-DMC,” Chang revealed. “We had Run-DMC doing Raising Hell. It was going to be Raising Hell at Rock the Bells. It didn’t work out, but fortunately [there were] enough other groups to pull off the vision that we felt comfortable with when we made our announcement.” Rock the Bells continued in San Francisco Sunday night, and this Saturday, the tour stops in New York. The last day of the tour is on Sunday in Washington D.C. Besides the pioneers on the main stage, the Clipse, Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Immortal Technique and Yelawolf are among the acts appearing on the “Paid Dues” stage. Linkin Park’s ‘Catalyst’ Video All About Contradiction

The clip conveys ‘something can be beautiful or it can be destructive,’ Mike Shinoda tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Mike Shinoda on the set of “The Catalyst” Photo: MTV News Linkin Park’s much-discussed A Thousand Suns will finally see the, uh, light of day on September 14, bringing to close a nearly two-year process that saw the band push themselves in ways they never thought possible. And, as is the case with most grand projects, things were still being worked out up until the very last minute. Case in point: The video for the album’s first single, “The Catalyst,” which the band shot back in June. In keeping with tradition, the clip was directed by the band’s DJ, Joseph Hahn, but aside from who would be sitting in the director’s chair, there were still plenty of details to sort out including just what they were going to call the song itself. “We are deciding the title as we speak,” LP’s Mike Shinoda told MTV News on the set of the video back in June. “We came in with a title in mind, and changed our minds, and probably by the end of the day, we’ll have a new name for the song.” And while they were still unsure of the song’s title a few months ago, the boys knew exactly the kind of emotions they wanted to convey in its video. Much like the album itself, they were gunning for big, often-contradictory themes: power and grace, destruction and salvation, ugliness and beauty. “The concept to the video: It kind of comes from the idea of, like, if you could imagine when nuclear fission was invented, or a moment in time when something can be used for positive or negative,” Shinoda said. “Something can be beautiful or it can be destructive. Or even, you know, if you’ve ever seen a dangerous fire from far away, it’s devastating up close, but from far away, it can be beautiful. Those are the kind of themes that run throughout the album, and they’re also themes that you see in the video.” “The Catalyst” video premieres at midnight August 25 (technically, the 26th) on MTV.com and VH1.com, and then on MTV, VH1, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Hits, MTV Tr3s and all MTV international territories at 8 p.m. ET/PT on August 26. Will Demi Lovato Be On Selena Gomez’s Album? Demi Dishes

Rumors have been circulating that the two Disney stars would work together on Gomez’s A Year Without Rain. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato at the “Camp Rock 2” premiere Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage With so much talk that Selena Gomez’s fellow Disney princess “Sonny With a Chance” star Demi Lovato may make an appearance on her forthcoming album, A Year Without Rain , fans of both the “Wizards of Waverly Place” star and the “Camp Rock 2” star may have been hoping that the two songstresses would get together for some funky pop-music collaboration. So when MTV News caught up with Demi Lovato on Wednesday night at the “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” premiere in New York City, we wanted to know if there was any truth to those rumors. “No! It’s not true,” Lovato shared about the album, which is also said to have songs featuring Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. “I think she’s already finished with her album.” However, she didn’t totally rule out ever working with Gomez, especially given that she’s hard at work on her own album. “I don’t know,” she said about a possible collaboration. Whether or not a Gomez-Lovato partnership does ever happen, she’s still focused on her wish list of having Drake and Trey Songz on her new record. And she’s looking forward to using her big voice on the R&B-influenced album . “It’s really nice to embrace it,” she said. “I grew up singing R&B and then I grew up listening to rock, so it was kind of weird. But I’m kind of learning how to incorporate the two and I’m having a good time with it. … I can put my vocal stylings on songs that are R&B and it showcases my vocals more than just singing really loud on a rock song.” Would you like to hear Selena and Demi on a track together?
