Joss Whedon Trolls ‘Star Wars’ Fans, Talks Wasp In ‘Avengers’

In our pre-Mayan apocalypse era, when you want to ensure that whatever you say is disseminated far and wide faster than the time it takes to tweet ‘DID YOU SEE THIS ###$$!!!’ the best advice is to master the subtle art of trolling with useful facts. Case in point: Joss Whedon , who screened The Avengers and afterward, sat for one of Jeff Goldsmith’s Q&As Tuesday night at the Director’s Guild of America in Hollywood. During a discussion that also included some tantalizing non-reveals about elements that almost, but didn’t make it into The Avengers , he decided to troll the entire universe by insisting that Star Wars: A New Hope is better than The Empire Strikes Back . Kind of! Slashfilm was on the scene and reports this comment: “I still believe that even though The Empire Strikes Back is better in innumerable ways than Star Wars , Star Wars wins,” Whedon said, “because you can’t end a movie with Han frozen in carbonite. That’s not a movie, it’s an episode.” Okay, after putting my fist back down and unclenching it, I see his point. Empire began what has become the most troubling aspect* of Hollywood’s obsession with trilogies; a stand alone first installment, with two subsequent films that work better as a duo rather than taken individually. A true trilogy ought to either feature three films that either work as stand alone stories linked by a common theme, or two cliffhangers in a row with resolution coming in the third movie. Empire , and to a lesser extent Jedi , manage the trick with some subtlety, but there’s a short line between them and Matrix Reloaded / Revolutions . And we must never forget Matrix Reloaded , lest we repeat the mistakes of the past. Anyway, those comments came during a circumspect discussion of how he envisions the Avengers franchise, and should probably be taken to mean that we won’t be getting an Avengers ‘trilogy.’ Good news, that, because instead we’re getting the crazy experiment that is the Marvel movie universe. Slashfilm ‘s recap is worth a full read, particularly because it includes more confirmation that the inclusion of the Wasp was indeed considered in the event ScarJo wasn’t available — interesting in light of recent rumors that Lizzy Caplan , who stars with Jesse Bradford in the Marvel short Item 47 , is a potential candidate to play the diminutive mutant. Read the whole thing here . * Second most troubling: claiming that three thematically unrelated sequels constitute a trilogy I AM LOOKING AT YOU DIE HARD . SMH: Alabama Football Player Kicked Off Team For Racist Tweet About Obama During Newtown Speech “Get That Ni**er Off My TV!!”

President Obama interrupted Monday Night Football to give a speech about the Newtown tragedies and it looks like not everyone in America appreciated it…. Northern Alabama Player Kicked Off Team For Racist Tweets Last night’s Sunday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots was interrupted in the first quarter by President Barack Obama giving a speech at the Newtown memorial for victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. Via The Grio reports: Football fans did not appreciate the interruption and instead erupted in numerous racist and offensive tweets on Twitter. Miley Cyrus vs. Taylor Swift: Shots Fired?

Did Miley Cyrus just call Taylor Swift a slut? Earlier this week, a Twitter user with the handle “kenbakernow” posted the following message, matching up Miley with Taylor and asking fans to consider the reputation of each superstar: It is true that some of the Miley Cyrus fashion choices have led to a certain label, and it hasn’t really helped that she recently took to the stage with strippers . Swift, meanwhile, receives a few jabs for her very long dating resume, but is mostly considered America’s Singing Sweetheart. How does Miley feel about the comparison? “@kenbakernow haha,” she responded. “this made laugh. thanks for making me smile I needed it love u.” Of course Cyrus would appreciate a follower standing up for her, but didn’t she sort of throw Swift under the promiscuous bus in the process? What do you think THGers? Does Miley receive unfair criticism, while Swift should be taken more to task for her never-ending line of boyfriends?

Dawn Hochsprung, Sandy Hook Principal, Mourned After School Shooting

The astonishing Connecticut school shooting Friday claimed the lives of 26 people in Newtown, Conn., will be tragically remembered for the 20 small children slain. Six adults were also killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, however, notably Dawn Hochsprung, the principal and a committed educator beloved by students. The principal died trying to protect the students she cared for every day. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza , started his rampage in the school’s main office, where Hochsprung had reportedly come out of a meeting. Hochsprung was killed in the shooting, the horrific sound of which was reportedly broadcast over the school’s PA system around 9:40 a.m. Friday morning. “She was really nice and fun, but was also very much a tough lady in the right sense,” Tom Prunty, a friend whose niece goes to Sandy Hook and was uninjured, told CNN. “She was the kind of person you’d want to be educating your kids. And the kids loved her.” In all, the death toll has reached 28 total: 20 children, six adults – including Dawn Hochsprung – Adam Lanza and his mother, Nancy, who he shot at another location. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by the Connecticut school shooting .

Adam Lanza: Did He Preview School Shooting on 4Chan?

Did Connecticut school shooting perpetrator Adam Lanza preview Friday’s stunning massacre on the online forum / bulletin board 4Chan two nights beforehand? That’s the rumor going around, anyway. In the following 4Chan forum exchange, an anonymous user purported to be Lanza makes an ominous promise that he will kill himself Friday and it will make the news. He adds that he lives in Connecticut. The below screen grabs from 4Chan have been censored, but also appear to show other users egging Adam Lanza on (if it’s really him). Take a look … State and federal officials are still putting together the pieces of one of the worst mass murders in U.S. history and the 20-year-old who shockingly carried it out. The first Adam Lanza photos released last night, in all their boyish innocence, belie the violent thoughts he apparently harbored – and acted upon. Horrifying. For all the debate over gun control – and you can expect plenty of that – it is beyond tragic that no one saw, or maybe even could see, how troubled this young man was. Twenty-seven people were killed, including Lanza, who began the day by shooting his own mother in the face, allegedly with weapons registered in her name.

Gun Control: Time to Get Serious?

The horrific shooting at the Newtown, Conn., elementary school that left 28 dead, including 20 children, has re-ignited a polarizing debate over gun control. If nothing else, it’s time to get very, very serious about discussing the issue. Public figures immediately jumped in to offer condolences in the wake of the mass murder committed by Adam Lanza , while some called for new restrictions. Plenty of others, while clearly sympathetic to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, defended gun rights and the 2nd Amendment. President Barack Obama, who cried during a press conference regarding the shooting Friday, did not touch upon the controversial issue of gun control by name. He did, though, sound a call to prevent further tragedies, regardless of politics. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he was “shocked and saddened” by the tragic shooting. He said society should “unify” to “crack down on the guns.” N.Y. City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said “immediate action” was needed. Mark Kelly, husband of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was gravely injured by a gunman in Tucson in 2011, wrote on Facebook: “The children of Sandy Hook Elementary School and all victims of gun violence deserve leaders who have the courage to participate in a meaningful discussion about gun laws.” “How can they be reformed and enforced to prevent violence and death in America?” Many believe the CT school shooting tragedy is just the latest, preventable case of a bullied, disgrunted and/or mentally ill person taking lives that could’ve been saved. Directly or indirectly, are guns too readily available to the perpetrators? Fewer guns, tougher laws, fewer tragedies, right? Take away the availability and fewer weapons will fall into the wrong hands at the wrong times. Right? Lots of people would agree with that theory, but not necessarily a majority. The debate has been fast and furious in the past 24 hours, and not one-sided. Trending topics on Twitter included “2nd Amendment,” “NRA” and “Columbine.” For every argument about the 2nd Amendment being antiquated is a counter-argument about its necessity, and its place in the foundation of American liberty. Some gun rights advocates believe this tragedy epitomizes the need for gun rights , not gun control, as a means of protection against those who may act violently. One Twitter user wrote, “The only gun reform we need is to allow people the ability to defend themselves, not provide nut jobs with easy targets #NRA.” Another posted, “Guns don’t kill people people do! Practice the 2nd Amendment – keep your gun loaded with you at all times – the younger you are the better.” Philosophically, gun rights activists feel that gun control takes away another piece of our liberty, starting a slippery slope toward socialism and totalitarianism. From a practical standpoint, they argue that criminals will always find a way to obtain guns, and that only law-abiding citizens would abide by regulations anyway. Furthermore, they feel crimes are just as often prevented by the deterrent of gun possession, and a dangerous black market would develop in the event of tougher laws. In light of recent events, and the arguments above, what do you think? Comment and vote below: Is it time to pass major gun control laws?   YES. Fewer guns, fewer tragedies! NO. It’s unconstitutional and won’t stop anything! View Poll »

Justin Bieber murder plot

Police in America have uncovered a bizarre and elaborate plot hatched by three men who planned to castrate and kill teenage pop singer Justin Bieber. Their Bieber fever started long ago at the state prison near Las Cruses, NM, where Staake met Dana Martin, a convicted killer serving two life sentences for raping and killing a 15-year-old girl in Vermont in 2000. Justin Bieber was reportedly the target of a murder plot hatched by a convicted killer behind bars. Investigators say they had ever
