Jay Sean Looks Forward To Freezing Time In 2011

As he rang the closing bell of the NASDAQ in Times Square, the singer reflected on his past and future. By Jay Sean, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Jay Sean rings the closing bell of the NASDAQ in Times Square Photo: Nasdaq MarketSite NEW YORK — To commemorate the first day of trading in the New Year, Jay Sean had the honor of ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ MarketSite in Times Square on Monday, and MTV News tagged along for the ride with his family, friends and industry colleagues. It has certainly been a rather meteoric two-year ride for the Brit in America, and in 2011, the Cash Money R&B singer will release his second stateside album, Freeze Time. At this introspective moment, Sean wrote about his feelings about his past year and the one to come, just for MTV News: “So, another year gone, and so much has happened. Sometimes it feels like it’s all one big blur, and thankfully, I have photos and calendar entries to see exactly what it was that I did!! 2010 was a year in which I witnessed growth. Growth as an artist, as a vocalist, and a songwriter but perhaps more importantly growth as a human being. 2009 ended with me having wedged my foot in the door, and 2010 gave me the opportunity to walk proudly in, quietly confident. By scoring two more hits in the U.S. with “Do You Remember” and “2012 (It Ain’t the End),” I managed slowly but surely to establish my place in the enormous American music scene, and that’s important to get those notches in the belt. One of the coolest memories for me was watching “The Karate Kid,” starring Jaden Smith, and hearing my song “Do You Remember” kick it all off. I can’t pretend I wasn’t overly pleased with myself (mainly because I knew that Will Smith had now heard my music, and anyone can tell you I’m the biggest Will Smith fan! lol). “2010 brought me back into the studio! Songwriting is actually my favorite part. To sit there away from all distractions in the world and create something that hopefully one day the world might hear and that my lovely fans will hopefully BUY LEGALLY FROM ITUNES AND VARIOUS OTHER DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL OUTLETS for, let’s face it, less than the price of two McDonald’s meals … (I digress, but you know what I mean!!) That is amazing for me. Nothing can match that process of creation. I see it as a privilege more than a gift, and I appreciate it. And I appreciate my co-writers and producers!! Big up all yourselves!! I got to work with the best of the best. Together we made an album that I am truly proud of. From its uplifting uptempos to sexy slow jams and melodic mid-tempos, I can honestly say this is my best work yet! If you loved the fun uptempos like “Down,” you’re gonna hear more like that! And if you liked slower sexy songs like “Ride It,” you’re gonna love this album! It’s a sick blend of pop, dance and r’n’b. It’s called Freeze Time, and it’s my fourth album. I can’t wait for you all to hear it when it comes out this year!!! Also last year, I got to work with some of the coolest artist in the world! From Nicki Minaj to Mary J. Blige, last year I shot six music videos, many of which will come out early in 2011, including my duets with Alesha Dixon from the U.K. and Jessica Mauboy in Australia. I also got to do my fourth song with Lil Wayne (FOURTH!!! WTF?!) which featured on his I Am Not A Human Being album! “Today, I leave to go to Qatar to do a concert and sing the Asia Cup theme song on which I’m featured. That’s gonna be a lot of fun! I also toured heavily with my band last year, and shared the stage and got to have jokes with some of the worlds biggest artists: Enrique Iglesias, Bruno Mars, Akon, B.o.B, Pitbull, Sean Paul, Flo Rida, Natasha Bedingfield and Katy Perry, to name just a few! In arenas around the world, to audiences of up to 20,000 in each arena!!! 20, 000!!! Eight years ago, I was onstage singing my heart out at bars to an audience of 23 wasted students, whilst dodging bottles of beer and making out like it was a dance move. Oh, and my DJ at the time was my brother. And the sound guy was, umm … my brother. And now, as I stand on the stage at the 02 in London or MSG in New York, I can honestly say, these are the most incredible live performances I’ve ever done. From Australia, to London, to Miami and Vegas, I traveled around the globe and managed to sing to all my wonderful fans everywhere. (Why does that make me sound like Santa Claus?) I am fortunate to have such loyal fans, and I love you all and thank you for your continued support over the years. You are all allowing me to live my dream, and I thank you for that. “My fans also helped me through the lowest point of my life so far. One of my favorite people on Earth left in November, my granddad. He passed away from a stroke, but fortunately I got to hold his hand in his last hours and tell him how much I love him. That taught me something, watching someone take their last few breaths. To take in ALL that we can, because we never know how long it’s all going to last. My granddad’s motto was ‘Don’t worry man, be happy,’ and I want to live like that from now on, to just not sweat the small stuff and be grateful for what we do have. And to just have fun and enjoy it all!!! Life is about the journey, not just the destination, so I take a lot more photos now so that I can remember all the moments. I’m gonna take on 2011 for everything it throws at me and OWN THAT BIYAAATCH!! I ended 2010 with a bang (and a disgusting hangover) by performing in Vegas for NYE and kicked off the New Year by ringing the closing bell on the first day of trading in 2011 at NASDAQ in Times Square, New York — my unfortunate mug on a GIGANTIC screen in the middle of Times Square, right opposite Diddy! Madness!! 2011 is going to be amazing, I can feel it.” Related Artists Jay Sean

Foo Fighters To Return This Spring With ‘Massive’ New Album

Yet-untitled record is shaping up to be their heaviest to date. By James Montgomery The Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage The Foo Fighters , for the majority of their career, have been the kind of band that only operates on a really, really huge level (witness their two-night stand at London’s Wembley Stadium in 2008 for proof of this, or even the sprawling, double-disc In Your Honor album). So when Dave Grohl is saying that their new album is, well, “massive,” you’re probably going to notice. On Tuesday (January 4), Grohl spoke to BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe about the Foos’ still-untitled new album (which they had apparently just finished the night before, according to a celebratory tweet ), and from the sound of things, it’s going to be a big deal. “There’s 11 songs and, front to back, there’s not one sleepy ballad,” Grohl said. “The fact that we did it without any computers, it was just really simple. It just sounds massive. It’s different to any other Foo Fighters album, because it just sounds big. It was really inspiring.” The band began work on the album — which Grohl said will be hitting stores “in spring” — last September. They teamed up with super-producer Butch Vig (Nirvana’s Nevermind ), former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and, judging by the photo he posted on the band’s Twitter account, frequent Nirvana collaborator/former Foo Pat Smear too. But rather than go for a big studio sound, the band opted for a much, well, simpler approach. “It was really in my garage,” Grohl said. “You could put a minivan in there and that’s it. We entered into this project with a direction. The first song we started recording, the tape just started shredding.” And judging by the early results — a 10-second snippet of a song called “White Limo” the band tweeted on Monday — Grohl isn’t kidding about the massive part. Or the rough-around-the-edges garage bludgeon, either. This really could be their heaviest work to date. And now, with the recording out of the way, the Foos can focus on more important tasks — like picking the first single. “I don’t even know what the single is going to be,” Grohl said. “It’s hard to choose because it sounds like there’s more than one.” What are you expecting from the new Foo Fighters album? Gwyneth Paltrow To Host ‘Saturday Night Live’

‘Country Strong’ star and musical guest Cee Lo will appear on January 15 episode. By Eric Ditzian Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic After Jim Carrey opens up the 2011 run of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, Gwyneth Paltrow will take over hosting duties on January 15, NBC announced on Tuesday (January 4). The appearance will mark the Oscar-winning actress’ third time hosting “SNL” and comes as she’s promoting her musical drama, “Country Strong,” which expands into a wide release this Friday. Paltrow will be joined by musical guest Cee Lo , whose hit single, “F— You,” she covered to wide acclaim on “Glee” last year. “I really am just flattered … that not only ‘Glee’ [covered it], but it was Gwyneth [singing],” Cee Lo told MTV News last November. “I didn’t realize when we first did the clearances for it. I just thought that maybe it would be sung by the cast, but [it] turns out to be her. I’m like, ‘That’s just, that’s too awesome.’ ” Paltrow has put her musical talents front and center in recent months. In addition to “Country Strong” and her turn on “Glee” (where she also performed a mash-up of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and “Singin’ in the Rain”), the actress performed at the Country Music Awards in November and has already booked a return trip to “Glee.” She’s even discussed the possibility of making an entire country album. “I think if I was going to make a country record, it would be like a super-bare, kind of stripped-back kind of country,” Paltrow told MTV News. “Like a little bit of bluegrass-influenced kind of thing.” Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: ‘Country Strong’ MTV News Extended Play: Cee Lo Related Photos The Evolution Of: Gwyneth Paltrow Related Artists Gwyneth Paltrow Cee Lo Green

Exclusive: Paramore React To Josh Farro’s ‘Exit Statement’

Band opens up to about Farro brothers’ departure during ‘Paramore: The Last Word,’ live on MTV.com Friday at 4.p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: MTV News FRANKLIN, Tennessee — Hayley Williams isn’t going to deny any of it. Not the anger, the sense of betrayal she felt two weeks ago when reading Josh Farro’s “Exit Statement,” or the bewilderment over the bizarre set of circumstances that led to that statement. But more than anything, she’s not going to deny her overwhelming desire to put the whole incident behind her … which is why MTV News flew to Tennessee last Thursday to talk to Williams and her Paramore bandmates Taylor York and Jeremy Davis about the split with the Farro brothers, and their plans to move forward without them. Because as they told us, once 2010 came to a close, they had no intention of addressing the topic anymore. “There’s been a lot of things said online, especially in the past week, and it sucks … it sucks to read it, and it also sucks to know that responding isn’t really going to help, online, because things travel so terribly on the Internet,” Williams said. “So we really wanted the opportunity to show our fans that we’re OK, you know? The three of us are still here, we’re not going anywhere. A lot of kids are still asking if the band is breaking up, and that just goes to show how broken the communication online can be, when rumors start traveling. So this is our way of showing that there’s a future and we’re stoked for it.” MTV News will examine the band’s past and future in “Paramore: The Last Word,” a live stream on MTV.com on Friday, December 7 at 4 p.m. Because unlike any other band of their stature and status, Paramore just can’t seem to escape the past. To this day, questions exist about their formation, talk of Williams’ initial pseudo-career as a solo artist and about the group’s early days as an indie-label act with major-label backing. And if, by some bizarre circumstance, you weren’t aware of any of that, well then Josh Farros’ statement probably brought you up to speed. A large portion of our interview last week dealt specifically with Josh’s central points — points the band deemed “irrelevant” — and, on Wednesday, we’ll publish Paramore’s responses to them. But we figured the best place to start with a situation this complex is at the beginning: with the band’s first reactions to Farro’s statement, which turned what had been a rather amicable split into something else entirely. “I don’t know if I got a phone call or an e-mail, but I woke up to it, basically, and that sucked, and I was not happy,” Williams said. “And yeah, it hurts, because what we were told was that they weren’t happy, they didn’t want to do this, and you can’t be mad at someone for not feeling something. … But then when it really became about all these other things, I was very surprised and kind of felt led on, almost. We’ve been doing this for six, seven years now. I don’t think any of this has been in vain, for any of us … and I don’t think anyone should discredit it.” “It was a drag. … Once we released our statement , we all knew they would probably release something,” guitarist Taylor York added. “So I think we were all kind of bracing ourselves. You know, breakups are hard, and there’s a lot of feelings so we kind of, in a way, we expected there to be something weird. So, yeah, it was really hard to read, just because it seemed like a lot of the stuff was pretty irrelevant to what happened. I think that was the weird thing, ’cause it just didn’t seem really necessary.” Of course, Williams and York said all of this in carefully measured, downright diplomatic tones. You get the feeling, had we sat down with them on the morning of December 22, immediately following Farros’ statement, their reactions would’ve been slightly different. But Paramore made it clear that are trying very hard not to get angry, if not for the sake of the band, then for the sake of their fans. “You feel every single type of emotion possible when something like this happens with someone that either was — or is — very close to you, you just feel everything, all at once,” Williams smiled. “I’ve never felt so … I don’t know, I couldn’t even figure out how I felt. But after realizing, like Taylor said, that it was kind of going to happen this way, you’ve just got to know that what’s important is the three of us are still here, and that we want to do this, and that’s the positive part about this.” MTV News will be unveiling our exclusive interview with Paramore on Friday at 4 p.m. ET with “Paramore: The Last Word,” a live stream on MTV.com that will feature in-depth analysis of the band’s future, real-time discussion with their biggest fans and exclusive footage of the band, past and present. Justin Bieber Says He’s ‘Crazy’ And ‘Nuts’

Bieber opens up about his personal life and the trials of pop superstardom in a new Vanity Fair cover story. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber on February 2011 cover of Vanity Fair Photo: Art Streiber / Conde Nast When Vanity Fair got hold of Justin Bieber for their February cover story , the boy wonder admitted that there’s a lot going on in that well-coifed head of his. “I’m crazy, I’m nuts,” the teen pop sensation declares, while suggesting that might not be such a bad thing for someone in his line of work. “Just the way my brain works. I’m not normal. I think differently — my mind is always racing,” he says in the issue, which hits newsstands everywhere January 11. “I’m just … nuts. But I think the best [musicians] probably are.” Bieber also talks about his hectic life in the spotlight. “It’s hard to really balance myself. A regular kid, if he catches the flu, he just gets to go home,” the young singer explains. “But I can’t do that … Everything is important. But, you know, my sanity is important, too. Even if I’m angry, I’ll just put a smile on my face and fake it. I don’t often fake it — what’s me is me … I know I have to give up a lot of myself, or a lot of a private life.” Still, Bieber reveals that he does have someone who helps to ensure that he gets to have some normal experiences. That guy is Kenny Hamilton, his bodyguard, who says, “I feel like I’ve become an expert at covert operations,” adding that he is the guy who makes sure that things go smoothly when the singer gets a day off. Aside from trying to find time for a personal life, Bieber also confesses that he wants to travel to space (something fellow pop star Lance Bass also dreamt about), hates reading — although he does own a copy of the Will Smith-approved “Rich Dad Poor Dad” — and has a hard time sleeping at night, but that could be attributed to his self-proclaimed racing mind. “I just turn over all night and think. My mind races,” he explains. “I think about all the things I didn’t have time to think about during the day — like family and God and things that should be more important but you don’t have time to think about, because you just get caught up [in everything else] during the day.” The Vanity Fair piece also includes a conversation with Bieber’s mom, Pattie Mallette, who shared that she thinks God put her and her son on Earth to bring light to the world. In addition, the magazine spoke with Usher, who describes the mop-topped singer as “the antithesis of Disney and Nickelodeon,” while adding, “You could immediately tell that this [was] a kid who has style — he’s a hip kid.” Bieber, now 16, is experiencing all his growing pains in the public eye and he knows that everyone is watching. “For younger guys, it’s like [they think] they’re not cool if they come to my concert. That’ll [change], I think; it’ll happen, maybe when I’m 18. But meanwhile, all their girlfriends are coming to watch me,” he says. “Of course, I think that people are just waiting for that time when I make a mistake and they’re gonna jump on it … There’s gonna be haters.” He adds that he intends to remain level-headed as his career progresses. “I know I’m not going to make a life-changing bad decision, as some people have,” he insists. “I’ve seen it happen too many times. I could be my own worst enemy, but I don’t want to mess this up.” Related Photos Justin Bieber Takes Over The Bodies Of Other Teen Idols Related Artists Justin Bieber

Waka Flocka Flame Arrested On Drug, Weapons Charges

Arrest stems from a raid on his Atlanta home last month. By Kara Warner Waka Flocka Flame Photo: Henry County Sheriff’s Office Rapper Waka Flocka Flame turned himself in to authorities in Atlanta on Monday (January 3) following last month’s raid on his home . Flocka was booked on multiple charges, including possession of marijuana and hydrocodone, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violation of probation for driving on a suspended license. According to TMZ , Waka’s mother and manager, Deb Antney, said the rapper turned himself in because “he wanted to do the right thing and didn’t want to run.” The rapper’s arrest stemmed from a warrant issued after a raid on his home in Atlanta last month, during which authorities were said to be investigating a prostitution organization but instead uncovered drugs and guns on the premises. Antney, who was home at the time of the raid, along with Waka associate Gucci Mane, fiercely denied the prostitution allegations. Although Antney and Mane were detained while police searched the home, neither party was charged. “It had nothing to do with prostitution,” Antney told MTV News. “The weapons they found were licensed weapons. There was under an ounce of marijuana, but it was nothing but a blunt. The other drugs were medication that was in Waka’s room from when he got hurt,” Antney said, referring to Waka Flocka Flame’s shooting last year . During a sit-down with radio station Hot 93.7 in Hartford, Connecticut, after the raid, Waka denied he was involved in any shady dealings, maintaining he has no plans to juggle life in the streets and the spotlight. “Why would I rap and go try to street gang bang? That’s hustling backwards. Why would I wanna rap all around the world and then go hit the streets and gang bang? I’m a rapper, I’m not a [gang-banger]. How can you gang-bang and be a rapper? I don’t understand that,” he said. “I would love to find out where their information is coming from. I can’t wait.” The “No Hands” rapper, whose real name is Juaquin Malphurs, is reportedly being held on $31,950 bond. A hearing is set for Tuesday. Related Artists Waka Flocka Flame
