‘The Hills’ Star Justin Bobby Was A ‘Genius’ Hairstylist, Adam Levine Says

‘One day, mid-cut, he was like, ‘So I think I’m going to do this show,’ ‘ the Maroon 5 frontman recalls to MTV News. By James Montgomery Justin Bobby and Audrina Patridge Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images Back before he was the slouchy philosopher dude with questionable facial hair on “The Hills” — who could forget his sage-like proclamation that “Truth and time will tell all?” — Justin Bobby was better known as Justin Brescia, hairstylist to the stars. And back then, he counted among his clients the gentlemen of Maroon 5 , who were, needless to say, rather amazed by his hairstyling abilities. Like, really amazed, as they told us earlier this month in New York. With the series finale of “The Hills” upon us, we decided to share their revelations with you now. “His name is Justin Brescia … somehow he became Justin Bobby,” M5 frontman Adam Levine said. “I don’t know quite how to say this — I’ve got to say this delicately — but the man is the most incredible hairstylist ever. He really is. Justin, you’re a genius,” he laughed. “He cut all our hair for a long time, and then one day, mid-cut, he was like, ‘So I think I’m going to do this show,’ and it was called ‘The Hills.’ And now he’s quit cutting hair and he’s on the show and he’s a big star, I guess.” But aside from having Brescia cut their hair, the guys in Maroon 5 remain rather blissfully unattached to the entire “Hills” phenomenon (“That’s about as close as I get to that whole … uh, thing,” Levine smiled). So they weren’t exactly aware that the show was coming to an end. But they were excited by the news, mostly because it meant they might be getting their old stylist back. “The guy was like Edward Scissorhands … he even has scissors tattooed on his arm,” Levine said. “He was really passionate about cutting hair, he was like a sculptor. I know it sounds crazy, but the dude is a monster.” Well, what are the odds of getting Brescia back? Levine thought about it for a second, smiled, and then provided an answer straight out of the Justin Bobby book of philosophy. “I don’t know,” he laughed. “Only truth and time will tell, bro.” What do you think Justin Bobby’s next act should be? Should he go back to cutting hair post-“Hills”? Tell us in the comments! Usher Gets Steamy In ‘There Goes My Baby’ Video

R&B heartthrob goes shirtless in sexy new clip released online Tuesday. By Jayson Rodriguez Usher’s “There Goes My Baby” Photo: LaFace/ Jive Usher has taken on critics who say he’s lost his swagger. And with a new video for his single “There Goes My Baby,” the singer continues to push back at detractors who dare to suggest he’s slipped. His last single, the Will.I.Am-produced “OMG,” is still riding high on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, currently resting comfortably in the #3 slot. And now, he’s pushing his next number with a video for the slow-burning ballad “There Goes My Baby.” Released on Tuesday (July 13), the clip features Usher and his leading lady trading sweaty moves under a desert sun. In the opening scene, Usher has his back to the camera as the sun rises just over his right shoulder. The R&B crooner, sporting a black tank top and dark jeans, slowly pulls his love interest closer toward him in the next scene, and then ditches his tee as he sings to her. “There goes my baby,” he sings on the chorus. “Loving everything you do/ Ooh girl, look at you.” As the song’s climax begins, the pair unite once again and exchange kisses as the sun fades. “There Goes My Baby” is the latest from Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond, which the singer recently announced would be made available in two separate extended editions next month. Versus will feature eight new songs, including “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” a Pitbull-assisted number that premiered on the singer’s website earlier this month. Usher will also release Raymond v. Raymond (The Deluxe Edition). That edition of the album will include tracks from Versus, as well as material from the original version of Raymond v. Raymond that had initially leaked online prior to his album’s official release and wasn’t included on the retail set. What do you think of Usher’s new video for “There Goes My Baby”? Usher Performs First Concert In China — And Sings In Chinese

He is joined by Chinese singer Leehom Wang, who helped Usher out on ‘OMG.’ By Kelley L. Carter Wang Leehom and Usher Photo: 42 West For his first-ever show in Beijing, Usher paired up with Chinese singer Leehom Wang onstage to sing his hit “OMG.” They also joined forces on Wang’s “My One and Only” — which Usher even sang in Mandarin. Usher encouraged his fans to sing along. “I want you to have crowd participation, which is very odd in my Asian markets, because a lot of times, they don’t like to sing out of respect, but I don’t mind. I love for my audience to sing along with me,” Usher said, according to Rap-Up.com . “That’s the part that makes me really enjoy it and I hope it makes them enjoy the show as well.” It was Usher’s first trip to China, and he pulled in Leehom to perform with him because he wanted to give his Chinese fans a little hometown flavor. “I am really excited!” Wang said before the show. “It is a great honor to be able to perform with Usher who has had such a powerful role in developing R&B around the world. The audience in Beijing is in for a really special night.” Usher said Wang came to his attention earlier that year as he started preparing for the tour. “You know, in looking at the music in Asia, Leehom really stood out,” Usher said in a statement. “Like me, he started young and I’m impressed by his natural talent, plus he has written some great songs. Also, his commitment to the environment and other good causes really resonated with my own philanthropic work.” What do you think about Usher singing in Chinese? Let us know in the comments! 50 Cent Attacked By Fan Onstage In Brazil

Fan tackles Fif during performance of ‘Ayo Technology.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe 50 Cent (file) Photo: Getty Images 50 Cent is known for getting involved in beef with other hip-hop artists, and at least one of the star’s followers appears to have been influenced by the rapper’s aggro persona. Video of a fan bum-rushing the rapper during a performance in Brazil was posted on RapRadar.com . The footage shows the attacker briefly clutching the rapper before being taken down by security. About midway through his performance of “Ayo Technology,” a fan in a hat and jeans runs onstage and grabs 50 as the rapper leads the crowd in an amped-up rendition of his Justin Timberlake-assisted hit. However, security is right on the heels of the fan and quickly tackles and slams the attacker onto the ground. A man in a white T-shirt (identified in some Web reports as G-Unit member Lloyd Banks) then gets in a few punches before the attacker is hauled offstage. Although he appears somewhat shaken up at first, 50 barely misses a beat and continues to spit the rest of the song, despite the melee. 50 Cent recently embarked on the Invitation Tour in the U.S., and afterward, the star and his G-Unit crew headed to Brazil on Friday for a string of dates. Overzealous stage-jumpers aside, 50 said fans can expect a lot of variety from his upcoming stage shows. “Because of the technology, there’s no real mystique to your actual performance anymore. After the first show, that’s gonna be on YouTube. So I have to keep changing the set so that it’s not the same show every night,” 50 told Cleveland.com. “I got so much material, I could actually perform for three hours straight, so it’s easier for me to make the decision to change music than a newer artist that doesn’t have that kind of catalog, where they can keep switching songs to play music that people are going to enjoy.” Related Artists 50 Cent

Lindsay Lohan Is A ‘Fragile Lost Child,’ Lawyer Says

Stuart Goldberg declined to take her case after meeting with Lohan over the weekend. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images Even with a 90-day jail sentence and a 90-day bid in an inpatient rehab facility to follow, a lawyer who met with Lindsay Lohan over the weekend about possibly taking up her case said the actress still doesn’t appear to fully understand how serious her situation is. According to People magazine, Chicago attorney Stuart V. Goldberg met with Lohan, her mother Dina and younger sister Ali at Lohan’s West Hollywood apartment this week after the “Mean Girls” star was dropped by her former attorney , and he came away concerned that his potential client is living in a fantasy world. “My impression of Lindsay is that she’s a fragile lost child — a sleeping beauty with her head in the sand. I found her not fully forewarned of the consequence of her actions,” Goldberg reportedly told the magazine. “I’m concerned that she’s not disciplined or tethered enough to the reality of adult consequences. … She doesn’t seem to have the awareness of what’s going to befall her.” Criminal defense attorney Goldberg was contacted after Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, quit the case following the backlash against the 24-year-old actress’ actions and alleged comments following her sentencing, which included revelations that she had the phrase “f— u” stenciled on her middle fingernail during the court appearance. After explaining to the Lohans that his requirement for taking on Lindsay’s case was “100 percent loyalty and zero tolerance for dishonesty,” Goldberg said “they didn’t seem to understand the urgency and gravity of the situation.” Additionally, TMZ reported that unnamed insiders said Goldberg may have split because Lohan’s manager said they couldn’t afford to pay him, while a source in the actress’ camp said it was because of personality issues. Much as she did during her probation hearing last week, Goldberg said Lohan took copious notes in a notebook during their six-hour meeting, while sister Ali asked “astute” questions, but in the end he declined to take on the case. He said at one point he worried that Lohan might be in a “dangerous state” and asked the actress — who has struggled with addiction issues and spent time in several rehab facilities — if she had thought about hurting herself. “She started sobbing quietly. She was genuinely in pain,” Goldberg said, adding that Lohan was “like Teflon” to his comment that she should get out of the toxic environment of Los Angeles. “It just slid right off her. She seemed to have some inner deep sadness that that was her fate.” Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

M.I.A. Says MAYA Is ‘A 3-D Album’

‘It’s not this one-dimensional, shiny pop album,’ singer says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali M.I.A. Photo: MTV News It’s been called everything from her “most personal” effort and “a towering work” (link http://www.clashmusic.com/reviews/mia-maya) to an outright “turd” , but according to M.I.A. , her new ///Y/&#92 album is really just her … in 3-D form. “I think my album’s really diverse, because I tried to make a 3-D version of who I was. Maybe that’s because I made it in the year when everything was f—ing 3-D, like ‘The World Cup … in 3-D!’ ‘Toothpaste adverts in 3-D!’And I was like ‘Fine, I’ll make an M.I.A. album in 3-D,’ ” she told MTV News. “And … that’s what I did. Sonically, it’s a 3-D album, it’s not this one-dimensional, shiny pop album, or, like, f—ed up dub-step album. It’s just 3-D. You’re not always high all the time, going like, ‘Oh My God, life’s so great! [I’m] at the beach!’ It’s way more complex that that, and I think it has those levels in it.” And ///Y/&#92 (which hits stores Tuesday), is most certainly complex, an album of multi-tiered dissonance, of whoops and wails, squelches and scuzz. From the paranoid rattle of opening track “The Message” to the stoned-out babble of closer “Space,” M.I.A. and her cadre of producers (a team that, this time around, included not just frequent collaborator Diplo — he of the “turd” comment — but also Blaqstarr, Rusko and Switch) go to great lengths to pack the album with as much sonic detritus as possible … everything from pneumatic tools (on “Steppin’ Up”) to screaming jet engines (“Story To Be Told,”) with Suicide samples, handclaps, Tablas, Jamaican radio chatter, muffled gunshots and an army of power chords thrown in for good measure. It’s enough to make your head swirl … or possibly explode. And it sounds that way because, during the year-plus she spent working on the album, M.I.A. very much felt like she would explode, too. Barred from leaving the country, pregnant with her first child, watching her homeland of Sri Lanka slog through the last stages of a bloody civil conflict, she felt helpless, confused and downright frustrated by everything going on around her. And ///Y/&#92 is the sound of her inner turmoil. “The last album was more about the environment and where you ended up and the people you met … on this one, there was just so much going on in my own world, and in my own life — whether it’s personal or professional — [that] there’s just no room for all that stuff,” she said. “And I’m still working off things I’ve seen and been inspired by that I haven’t fully explored in my other two albums. And so, having all that, and then with all this extra sh– that was going on in my personal life, I think it worked out great that I couldn’t leave the country, and I was just, like, locked up in a cave. It gave me time and space to just puke all this stuff out that was going on in my own life.” So while it’s by no means easy listening, ///Y/&#92 isn’t supposed to be. Born out of intense personal strife, it represents M.I.A. at her most cathartic, her most detached, her most free. Does all of that make for radio-friendly pop? Not especially. Does it make for an absolutely compelling listen? Most definitely. “I couldn’t even register another human being, or another influence, or the scene and the music that’s going on outside. I’ve always been like that, I’ve always been out there … and been really connected to everything and everyone before,” she said. “And this was the first time I had to just take time out and I think this is the music that reflects all the stuff that was going on — sometimes it was confusing and sometimes it was great.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: M.I.A. The Roots And John Legend’s Wake Up! Track List Revealed

Tracks from Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway will be covered on the upcoming album. By Mawuse Ziegbe The Roots and John Legend Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images The Roots and John Legend will revive a host of soulful songs on their upcoming collection of covers, Wake Up!, which is due in stores in September. The track list — which was revealed by Rap-Up.com on Monday (July 12) — includes 11 songs, and Chicago MC Common and Grammy-nominated songstress Melanie Fiona make appearances on the album. Wake Up! revisits songs such as “Little Ghetto Boy” by Donny Hathaway, “Wholy Holy” by Marvin Gaye and “Hard Times” by Baby Huey and the Babysitters. Although the album is a collection of vintage tracks, Legend said the timeless lyricism has a contemporary appeal. “These songs sound so relevant now,” Legend said in a statement. “On most of them, you wouldn’t change a lyric. ‘Wake Up Everybody’ (the album’s first single, featuring contributions from Melanie Fiona and Common) has four verses — the first one is a general statement, the second is about education, third is about health care, and the fourth is about making a better environment. No editing needed.” Roots drummer ?uestlove and Legend also recently spoke to MTV News about their cover of Ernie Hines’ “Our Generation” and its connection to a classic hip-hop track. ” ‘Straighten It Out’ [by] Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth was an important hip-hop record and it sampled ‘Our Generation,’ ” Legend said. On Wake Up! , Legend said he and the Philly collective strived to spotlight songs that could be incorporated into a hip-hop record. “A lot of what we did was try to bring songs that have been sampled or should be sampled or sample-able to make the album,” he said. Legend also said that another upside of working on the album with the group he has been following since college is having access to ?uest’s extensive musical knowledge. “He just knows a lot of great records,” Legend said. “When you’re thinking about putting an album together of songs that were performed [more than] 40 to 50 years ago, he’s one of the best people to talk about that with.” The Roots and John Legend’s “Wake Up!” track list, according to Rap-Up.com: 1. “Compared to What” 2. “Hard Times” 3. “Little Ghetto Boy” 4. “Wake Up Everybody” (featuring Common and Melanie Fiona) 5. “Our Generation” 6. “Love the Way It Should Be” 7. “Hang On in There” 8. “I Can’t Write Left Handed” 9. “Wholy Holy” 10. “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” 11. “Shine” Are you looking forward to Legend and the Roots’ joint album? T.I. Is ‘Taking The World Over’ On King Uncaged, Swizz Beatz Says

‘We’re growing as artists,’ Swizzy says of collaborating with Tip. By Shaheem Reid Swizz Beatz Photo: MTV News When Swizz Beatz and T.I. link up in the lab, the result will probably be epic. First, they landed Tip a smash single with “Bring Em Out,” then they trumped themselves with “Swing Ya Rag” from Paper Trail. The pair recently collaborated on the King of the South’s upcoming King Uncaged. “What we just did is bigger than those,” Swizz said about the two new records he produced for Tip. “It’s bigger than ‘Swing Ya Rag,’ it’s bigger than all of those. We’re growing as artists. That’s one of the things I wanted to focus on with Tip, was: ‘We did that already. We don’t need to compete with nobody. You up there.’ Everything we gotta do, we gotta stay leaders. That’s how we got to where we at now. He gave me his OK on that. Gave me the clear lane. And we’re gone. Trust me on that. The first joint, it’s nice. Crazy! The second joint is taking the world over. It’s a positive message, and I’ll let him explain the rest of the story, because he would be glad to. [It’s] very musical, but still with that swag in it.” T.I. completed a yearlong prison sentence in March for weapons charges. Swizz said one of their collaborations delves into that experience. “The other one is more heartfelt,” the producer said. “Story to tell. Think about the real things that’s going on in the world. He just finished dealing with a real situation. Besides his situation, there’s a million of other real situations going on in the world. So the feel is more worldly. African congas, symphony violins, what I told I was gonna do. I told y’all I was gonna switch the sound thing up.” King Uncaged is due in September.
