President Obama’s Appearance At Kalamazoo Central Was ‘Electrifying,’ Students Say

‘Everybody was screaming. Nobody was forming sentences,’ Xavier Bolden says of surprise meeting before graduation. By James Montgomery Kalamazoo Central High School student Simon Boehme Photo: MTV News A salutatorian. A future lawyer. And an actor. Up until Monday, all three were students at Kalamazoo Central High School in western Michigan, and all three were responsible for “We Are the Giants,” the winning entry in the White House’s “Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.” So all three were responsible for the prize: President Barack Obama , who came to town to deliver the : commencement address at Central’s graduation ceremony. MTV News and Get Schooled — a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates — gave all three students video cameras to document their graduation and, of course, all the excitement that came with having the Commander in Chief in town to help them celebrate. “I woke up on Monday, had two early morning interviews at 6 a.m. with local TV news stations, and then after that, I relaxed a bit,” Central’s salutatorian Simon Boehme told MTV News. “After that, I read over my speech, and then, well, I got a new tie, met my family, went out to lunch with the mayor of Kalamazoo, and then got ready. It was a pretty hectic day.” Nicole Allen, who will head to Western Michigan University in the fall and law school after that, had a busy day too. “This morning at 6:30, I had an interview with a local CBS news affiliate, and then I came home and tried to take a nap, but that didn’t work out so well,” she recounted. “Then, I had [graduation] rehearsal from about 8:30 to 10, and after that, I went home and finally managed to take that nap … around 2 p.m., I started getting ready, only we had serious car problems. So I was rushing around, hoping I’d make it there on time!” Due to Obama’s appearance, Central’s graduation ceremony was moved to nearby Western Michigan University, where the soon-to-be grads milled about anxiously until principal Von Washington Jr. gathered them in adjoining room, where they got the surprise of their lives: a meeting with Obama himself. “I had no idea. I was actually filming some of it [for MTV], and I looked underneath the curtain, and I was like, ‘Wait … that’s got to be Obama. Look at the shoes! From the ankles down, that’s him,’ ” laughed Xavier Bolden, who stars in the “Giants” video and will study theater at WMU in the fall. “Still, though, when he came out, I was shocked! It was electrifying. Amazing. Everybody was screaming. Nobody was forming sentences.” “We were sitting in the room, and then all of a sudden, out walks the president!” Allen said. “It was completely a surprise! When he came in, I cried, but then I cried when I found out we won. People say I’m emotional, but it was so unexpected. I burst out crying. I was shaking. My whole body was.” And as for Obama’s actual speech, well, all three students found his message of hard work, selflessness and service inspiring. Even Boehme, who used his salutatory speech as a platform to ask Obama to form a youth advisory council (“I always knew I wanted to ask him about it,” he said). As they head out into the world, they’ll always remember their graduation day and who they got to speak at it. “I mean, the president is standing right in front of us! That doesn’t happen every day,” Allen said. “And to be in high school and have the president give your commencement speech, I won’t ever forget that.” Get Schooled is a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates and promoting the importance of education, developed by Viacom in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Drake Says He And Lil Wayne Are Planning A Joint Album

‘I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,’ he tells MTV’s ‘Sucker Free.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: the305.com A Young Angel and Young Lion LP? It’s finally in the works, according to Drake. The Toronto MC said he and Lil Wayne spoke about a joint album when he visited the incarcerated star last week in prison. “I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,” Drake told DJ Envy on MTV’s “Sucker Free.” ” … There’s some things I’m excited for in my life — I’m excited to go perform certain places — but [this project] will probably be one of the most exciting things in my life, because we make music on a different level. It’s just so fun, so comfortable. A whole album? To think about all the things we can do, especially if we’re gonna do 15 songs. Me and him don’t like to do 12, 13 [songs]. We want to do 15, 16. Yeah, Lil Wayne and Drake album.” Wayne is only featured once on Drake’s debut album, Thank Me Later, which drops June 15. The Cash Money superstar and Drizzy collaborated on a number of projects in the past, including Drake’s mixtapes Comeback Season and So Far Gone, in addition to the Young Money compilation released last year. But this will be the first time the two MCs pair up for their own project. Last year, while on the verge of inking his deal, Drake told MTV News about his career ambitions and said Lil Wayne would be a part of them for a long time. “I plan to work with Wayne for the rest of my career, so I think it’s a smart career move,” he said. “You know, everybody else [on Young Money] will hopefully work out the situations, get the right people on the album. I think it was important for me to show him that I believed in him as much as he believed in me. Because a lot of months, he stuck his neck out there for me, you know with the VMAs [where Lil Wayne rapped Drake’s verse from ‘Money to Blow’ at the beginning of his performance of ‘Misunderstood’] and then ‘Ransom,’ and all the songs that we put out. And the things he would say in interviews, he really put himself out there for me. So I think it was only just and fair to show him that I feel the same way.” For more Drake, check him out with DJ Envy on the road for Sucker Free Summer at Hartford, Connecticut’s Hot Jam 9 this Sunday at noon on MTV2. Eminem’s Recovery Leaks Two Weeks Early

Rapper’s latest is officially due out on June 22. By Gil Kaufman Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope It doesn’t matter if you’re a new kid on the block like Drake or a veteran like Eminem , chances are your new album is bound to leak early at some point. Marshall Mathers is the latest to fall to the leak plague, as his upcoming Recovery hit the Internet on Monday, two weeks before its June 22 official release date, and spread like wildfire. Fan forums immediately blew up with quick-take reviews on the rapper’s second album in as many years, raving about the many different sounds Slim Shady tries on over the course of the disc. The opening track, “Cold Wind Blows,” finds Em taking aim at some of his favorite targets, viciously daring haters to take him on while dropping references to Elton John, Michael Vick, Aquaman, Michael J. Fox and Mariah Carey before dipping into a sing-songy chorus, “I’m as cold as the cold wind … blows, bla bla bla blows.” He gets contemplative on the expansive acoustic ballad “Space Bound” and praises his second chances on the gospel stomper “Cinderella Man.” He also weaves his way around a gorgeous Rihanna chorus on the troubled-love ballad “Love the Way You Lie.” The leak comes less than a week after the online debut of the second song from the album, an unexpected collaboration with Pink called “Won’t Back Down.” The DJ Khalil-produced track finds Em dropping his usual verbal bombs, taking on all comers in his inimitable style. “Listen, garden tool/ Don’t make me introduce you to my power tool,” Em raps over Khalil’s droning organ chords. “You know the f—ing drill/ How you douche bags feel?/ Knowing you’re disposable, Summer’s Eve, Massengill.” Eminem spoke about his Recovery collaborations while in France on a promotional tour. Pink, Rihanna and Lil Wayne are all featured, a departure from Em’s previous projects, where the guest lists were usually limited to Shady or Aftermath artists. For “Won’t Back Down,” he explained, Pink was added to the track after it was completed. “When I did the song that I did with Pink, I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record and felt that she would smash this record,” Em said. Pink does her part with a fiery warning in the chorus: “You can sound the alarm, you can call out your guards/ You can fence in your yard, you can pull all the cards/ But I won’t back down, I won’t back down,” she sings. The video for “Not Afraid,” the album’s first single that’s been storming the charts, premiered on Sunday. In the dark clip directed by Richard Lee, the rapper stands on the ledge of a roof, slowly edging closer to the edge as he raps about coming out of a perilous time in his life. He’s able to pull back from the abyss and takes a walk through the streets of Newark ending up in a hall of mirrors where’s he’s forced to confront his reflection. ‘Green Day: Rock Band’ Features Decades Of Dye Jobs And Tattoos

‘I thought we could have a lot of fun with ‘Rock Band’ and highlight different times in our career,’ Mike Dirnt tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Green Day Photo: MTV News Capturing the likeness of a band that’s spent the past two decades rifling through Manic Panic and tattoo ink at a breakneck pace was one of the biggest challenges facing the designers of “Green Day: Rock Band,” and Green Day were more than ready to put them to the test. “I think we were sort of challenging the programmers and the game designers, like, ‘OK, but can you do this ?’ ” drummer Tre Cool said. “And they’re like, ‘Sure!’ ‘Well … can you do this ?’ ‘Yeah!’ ‘OK, but it’s got to be … ‘ ‘Yeah!’ They were really good.” “I thought we could have a lot of fun with ‘Rock Band’ and highlight different times in our career,” bassist Mike Dirnt said. “I thought it was a really cool way to kind of show people, you know, just different things [about the group] in a format the size of a TV set.” It seems that — nearly as much as their music — Green Day’s career can be broken down into specific looks too: the baby dreadlocks and eye-popping dye jobs of the Dookie days; the bottle-blond, leather-jacket look of the Warning era; or the black spikes (and even blacker eyeliner) of American Idiot, to name just a few. And the designers of “Rock Band” knew that — which is why all those looks made the cut. Plus a whole lot more, too. “Different details come up in the game that go from, you know, 1994 through 2000. Plus, what year is it now? 2009, 2010?” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong laughed. “And just kind of seeing the different tattoos and wearing a T-shirt I remember. Like, the T-shirt that I wore, and I wrote ‘Stupid’ on it and put an arrow up to my face. And that’s the kind of details that they seem to nail.” And while the hairstyles and tattoos might be instantly recognizable to Green Day fans, there’s another — slightly newer — detail that designers decided to include almost as a joke: the band’s Drunk Bunny, which started making appearances during American Idiot performances and has since become a fan favorite. And, yes, his inclusion made all the difference to the guys in the band. “Yeah, that’s great too. Sometimes when we were playing festivals, whoever was playing right before us weren’t quite getting the crowd going, so I think we ended up with a friend of ours just putting a bunny costume on and said, ‘Hey, go warm up the crowd!’ ” Armstrong smiled. “So, you know, they’d just down beers and get everybody to do the YMCA, you know? It’s definitely a nice touch.” MTV News is celebrating the release of “Green Day: Rock Band” with a week of special coverage. For more on the game, check out our Multiplayer blog. ‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors’ To Give Dirty South Its Props

Drake, Rick Ross, Diddy, Gucci Mane among rappers performing tributes on the show. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South” promises fans energetic performances by some of rap’s all-time greats, when the latest installment in the tribute series airs Monday night (June 7). This year’s show is dedicated to hip-hop originating from down bottom: Luther Campbell and his Miami group the 2 Live Crew; producers Jermaine Dupri, Organized Noize and Timbaland; J. Prince and the Houston-based Rap-A-Lot music empire; and Master P and the No Limit soldiers who turned New Orleans on its ear. “Tonight is gonna be historical,” DJ Khaled told MTV News last week as the show taped at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. “To be a part of a historical moment like this … I been with [Rick] Ross, I seen Bun B, I seen Luke. I seen Pitbull, Trina, Goodie Mob. Just the rehearsal alone, I had goose bumps. This is big for the South — this is big for music period.” Among the acts honoring this year’s class are Khaled and Ross, Paul Wall, Lil Jon, Drake, Trina, Pitbull, Nelly and the St. Lunatics, as well as Diddy and Gucci Mane. Meanwhile, T.I. and Jonah Hill participated as presenters; Craig Robinson hosts. “Just being in jail three weeks ago, that was so big for me,” Gucci told Miss Info about his involvement in the ceremony. “No pressure. Everything is downhill from there,” he told the media personality. “Nothing bigger than … getting your freedom back. I don’t have nothing to prove.” During rehearsals last week, Silkk the Shocker said he was proud of what his brother, Master P, had accomplished . “With me, first of all, shouts out to him, ’cause I got to see greatness for a long time,” Silkk said. “It’s very good to finally see him get honored for it. And then, I think a lot of people out there also appreciate what he’s done. I perform all the time, but to actually perform and give back to him and show him what he means to us, that’s amazing for me.” P told MTV News that one of his greatest contributions was selling so many records without the backing of a major label. “When it comes down to putting out records, people are afraid. They say, ‘I don’t want to put out too many records,’ ” P explained of the conventional rationale. “My thing was, with No Limit, when you’re hot, you’re hot, you give ’em whatever you can give ’em. That’s what I teach my family: When you got ’em, give it to ’em, ’cause when you got a fanbase, feed that fanbase. There’s no such thing as too much music. We accomplished something that nobody did, to be able to sell 75 million records independently and to be honored for hip-hop is a blessing and lets you know we been dong the right thing.” Some of the can’t-miss moments on this year’s “Hip Hop Honors” are Bow Wow dressed up like Kris Kross to perform the JD-produced classic “Jump,” and the lively return of Mystikal during P’s “Make ‘Em Say Ugh.” Whose set are you most looking forward to? ‘Jersey Shore’ Star The Situation Vs. Taylor Lautner: Who Has Better Abs?

‘There can only be one Situation,’ the Situation himself says of the showdown. By Josh Wigler Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino and Josh Horowitz on the 2010 Movie Awards red carpet Photo: MTV News Fans of the “Twilight” franchise must pick a side: either Team Edward or Team Jacob. But the hunky werewolf’s loyalists might want to make room on their plate for a completely different rivalry: Team Jacob vs. Team Situation? While walking the red carpet at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , “Jersey Shore” castmates Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino were asked to weigh in on which star had the better “situation” going on: the “Jersey Shore” star or Taylor Lautner. For Ronnie, it’s not even a question who has the better shirtless situation: “You’ve got to go with the Situation, the original.” But the Situation himself seemed to be looking for a humble and amicable resolution. Instead, he offered: “You know what? The Situation is called the Situation for a reason. There can only be one Situation.” It’s hard to say whether Ronnie and the Situation’s opinions reflect those of the rest of the “Jersey Shore” cast, as Pauly D and Vinny Guadagnino told MTV News earlier in the night that they’re fans of the “Twilight” actors. “I’m a fan of them,” Pauly D revealed, with Vinny adding: “I wish everybody success. We’re both doing our thing right now, and we’re both guests at the MTV Movie Awards. Can’t ask for anything more than that, you know?” They might feel that way now, but what if they were asked who had the better hair between Pauly and RPattz? That would be a whole different “situation” altogether. Mark Wahlberg Says He’s ‘Focused’ On Bringing ‘Entourage’ To Big Screen

‘In the trailer, you see [Ari, Lloyd] waking up together in Vegas,’ he jokes of possible story lines, at MTV Movie Awards. By Josh Wigler Mark Wahlberg Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images “Entourage” fans have spent seasons following Vincent Chase and his loyal crew as they work to land the young actor big parts in big movies. Now, the real-life actor/producer who helped bring the series to HBO wants to get a movie of his own made. Mark Wahlberg confirmed that a big-screen adaptation of the show is in the works, when we spoke to him on the red carpet at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . “The Other Guys” star said an “Entourage” movie is more than just a possibility — it’s the project he’s most determined to see in theaters. “I am more focused on making that movie than my own films,” Wahlberg told MTV News, exhibiting all the passion of Jeremy Piven’s energetic talent agent, Ari Gold. “I just think we can make a great movie. I think people always wanted [it] and have complained that the episodes are too short — they’ve always wanted more. I think we’re going to do it. We just have to end strong, and this season is, by far, the best season so far.” Over the course of six seasons, “Entourage” has covered a lot of ground: Vinnie has gone from rising star to leading man (with the world’s highest-grossing blockbuster among his credits), only to see the work dry up, going from out-of-work actor and back to emerging star once again. It’s been quite the journey. So what story line could an “Entourage” movie explore? Wahlberg offered up one particularly memorable scene, though it had nothing to do with Vinnie. “In the trailer, you see [Ari and his associate, Lloyd] waking up together in Vegas not knowing what happened,” Wahlberg imagined. “It would be pretty cool!” If that’s not enough to sell you, then “Entourage” probably isn’t your cup of tea. But Wahlberg’s enthusiasm for the project was palpable. He’s already considering making a cameo in the film: “Possibly, yeah. I’ve been on the show so many times, and we’ve got some great cameos coming up this year. It’s getting pretty good.” Do you want to see an “Entourage” movie? Tell us in the comments! T.I. Says He’ll Bring New ‘Insight’ To King Uncaged

‘I’m older. I’m wiser. I’m more mature,’ he tells MTV News on the Movie Awards red carpet. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Josh Horowitz T.I. Photo: Getty Images T.I. is feverishly at work on his forthcoming album, King Uncaged, his first collection of new music since finishing his federal prison sentence earlier this year for a 2007 gun rap. The Atlanta MC has rolled out two tracks, “I’m Back” and “Yeah Ya Know (Takers),” in addition to his recently released F— a Mixtape. After going through a challenging period in his life, with the death of his best friend and jail time, the rapper has a new perspective on things. “I’m older. I’m wiser. I’m more mature,” Tip told MTV News on the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards , his first awards show since leaving prison . “I’m more patient. And I just take it as it comes.” So does that mean we’ll be seeing a more conscious Tip on his next project? “Nah, not at all,” he said. “I still feel like I have my edge. But I have some intellect and insight to go with it. I feed off of all my experiences, music-wise.” For now, T.I. continues to work on King Uncaged, slated for a late-summer release. He’s spent some time working with The-Dream for his album and for the singer’s next project. The-Dream told MTV News in April that Tip’s new material is impressive. “Tip is in a zone, man,” the singer said. “He’s in one of those things. But me just being a lyric guy, what makes songs, I think, hits is when it comes from the heart and you really are saying something you mean.
