B.o.B’s ‘Nothin’ On You’ Came Together ‘Magically,’ Smeezingtons Say

‘We’re melody guys, we sing,’ Phillip Lawrence says of production trio, which includes Bruno Mars. By Jayson Rodriguez Photo: MTV News The making of B.o.B’s breakout hit “Nothin’ on You” was a group effort, according to the song’s producers. Bruno Mars , who is featured on the track, said he and his production partners, Phillip Lawrence and Ari Levine — together they comprise the Smeezingtons — collectively pieced together the music that would eventually top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Me and Phil always had that hook,” Mars told MTV News, spontaneously breaking out into the chorus that is helping to make him one of music’s buzzed-about names. “It was a different melody at first, though,” Lawrence added. “So one day our other partner — the Silent Bob of the Smeezingtons — Ari, he walked into the studio and said he programmed the drums [over],” Mars explained. “It had this old-school hip-hop beat. I said, ‘Gimme the piano,’ and that was the first thing I started playing. Magically, that melody worked with this track we were doing.” The result, of course, was “Nothin’ on You,” which landed atop the charts this year and has become an early contender for song of the summer. Now, the production trio’s services are increasingly in demand. Among the artists they’re hoping to get in the studio with is Keri Hilson, who’ll be prepping her next album. Apart from B.o.B, the Smeezingtons also recently worked with Gnarls Barkley’s Cee-Lo on Mars’ debut EP, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, and are hoping to get back in the lab with him. (“He’s incredible,” Mars said of Cee-Lo.) And their remix of K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag” has been selected as the Coca-Cola anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Smeezingtons intend to apply the same principles that have brought them success so far to future projects, including Bruno Mars’ forthcoming full-length debut. “We’re melody guys, we sing,” Lawrence explained of their sound. “That’s kind of our main focus, to have really good, memorable melodies. We’ll go into the studio, and [Mars will] start playing the piano and I’ll start freestyling or vice versa. We’re heavily influenced by the ’80s [sound].” Are you looking forward to new material from the Smeezingtons? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists B.o.B

Ronnie James Dio Remembered By Metallica’s Lars Ulrich

Drummer salutes late Dio/ Black Sabbath/ Rainbow singer in long, heartfelt post on Metallica’s website. By MTV News staff Ronnie James Dio Photo: Paul Natkin/WireImage When an artist has a career as long and legendary as that of heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio, who died Sunday after battling stomach cancer, the influence can be felt by generations of musicians. The singer — who fronted Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell and his own band, Dio, over the years — was remembered by many musicians in the hours after his death was announced on Sunday, including members of Slipknot, Slayer, Anthrax and others . Yet Metallica’s Lars Ulrich wrote an extremely heartfelt, personal and lengthy letter to Dio posted on Metallica’s official website , drummer recalling seeing Dio’s band Elf opening for Deep Purple in Denmark in 1975. “Dear Ronnie, I just got off stage in Zagreb. I was met with the news that you’ve passed on,” he wrote. “I’m kind of in shock, but I wanted you to know that you were one of the main reasons I made it onto that stage to begin with. When I first saw you in Elf, opening for Deep Purple in 1975, I was completely blown away by the power in your voice, your presence on stage, your confidence, and the ease with which you seemed to connect to 6000 Danish people and one starry-eyed 11 year old, most of whom were not familiar with Elf’s music. The following year, I was so psyched when I heard the results of you joining forces with my favorite guitar player [Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple to form Rainbow with Dio in 1975]. You guys sounded so right for each other and I instantly became Rainbow’s #1 fan in Denmark. “In the fall of 1976, when you played your first show in Copenhagen, I was literally in the front row and the couple of times we made eye contact you made me feel like the most important person in the world. The news that you guys were staying in town on your day off somehow embedded itself in my brain and I made the pilgrimage to the Plaza Hotel to see if I could somehow grab a picture, an autograph, a moment, anything. A few hours later you came out and were so kind and caring … pictures, autographs and a couple minutes of casual banter. I was on top of the world, inspired and ready for anything. “When we finally got a chance to play together in Austria in 2007,” the post continues, “even though I may not have let on, I was literally transformed back to that little snot-nosed kid who you met and inspired 31 years earlier and it was such a f—ing honor and a dream come true to share a stage with you and the rest of the legends in Heaven and Hell. A couple of weeks ago when I heard that you were not going to be able to make it to the Sonisphere shows that we would be sharing this June, I wanted to call you and let you know that I was thinking of you and wish you well, but I kind of pussied out, thinking the last thing you needed in your recovery was feeling obligated to take a phone call from a Danish drummer/fan boy. I wish I’d made that call. “We will miss you immensely on the dates, and we will be thinking of you with great admiration and affection during that run. It seemed so right to have you out on tour with the so-called ‘Big Four’ since you obviously were one of the main reasons that the four bands even exist. Your ears will definitely be burning during those two weeks because all of us will be talking, reminiscing and sharing stories about how knowing you has made our lives that much better. “Ronnie, your voice impacted and empowered me, your music inspired and influenced me, and your kindness touched and moved me. Thank you. Much love, Lars” Related Photos Ronnie James Dio: A Life In Photos Related Artists Ronnie James Dio Black Sabbath Metallica

Adam Lambert Says ‘If I Had You’ Clip ‘Gets Kind Of Psychedelic’

‘I was inspired by the parties that I’ve gone to in the past, like Burning Man,’ Lambert tells MTV News of the video. Adam Lambert Photo: MTV News Adam Lambert has already dropped some hints about the over-the-top video for his latest single, “If I Had You.” And when MTV News caught up with the singer backstage at KIIS-FM’s annual Wango Tango festival in Los Angeles, the former “American Idol” contestant admitted that all he needed to shoot the clip were some old pals. “The thing about the video [is] there is a love interest: It’s all my friends,” he explained. “It’s about the love that you have with your circle of people that you surround yourself with. “The ‘If I Had You’ video we shot in the woods at night,” he continued. “I was inspired by the parties that I’ve gone to in the past, like Burning Man and this other party called Lightning in a Bottle. There’s a big kind of subculture in California and around the country of people who are designers and performance artists, just free spirits that like to come together and play dress-up and have a good time. And it’s a very specific community, one that’s inspired me a lot.” Instead of casting people to look like they could be part of this subculture, Lambert got his real friends on-board. “I invited my friends to come party in my video, so there’s a real authentic joy,” he explained. “And it gets kind of psychedelic. There’s just gonna be a lot of special effects … Some are from [Los Angeles variety extravaganza] the Zodiac show, some are from parties [and] clubs. … Some of them I’ve done theater with. It’s a big variety of people.” And, as teased in a photo released last week, there are going to be some great costumes from the fashionisto himself. “You know me and costumes, I tried to do as many looks as I could,” he said, adding that he was a little shocked there were any paparazzi hanging around near the set. “It’s funny ’cause I wanted to keep that whole thing a secret. I think there were paparazzi camped out on the hillside.” Are you looking forward to Lambert’s new video? Tell us in the comments! Related Photos Wango Tango 2010 Related Artists Adam Lambert

Bret Michaels To Appear On Live ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ Finale

Poison singer is competing against actress Holly Robinson Peete on Sunday’s show. By Gil Kaufman Bret Michaels on “Celebrity Apprentice” Photo: Ray Tamarra/Getty Images A few days before Bret Michaels is scheduled to play his first concert since a brain hemorrhage landed him in the intensive care unit, the Poison singer will appear on next Sunday’s finale of “The Celebrity Apprentice.” Michaels made the cut on Sunday night’s (May 16) edition of the show — taped several months ago — which paved the way for him to make his comeback on this week’s live finale, where he will go head-to-head with actress Holly Robinson Peete. “I came in here as a complete underdog,” Michaels said after getting the news on the show. “You know what everyone’s mistake was? They so underestimated me!” Michaels made the cut after Sharon Osbourne, chef Curtis Stone and model/wrestler Maria Kanellis were eliminated. Michaels has been competing on “Celebrity Apprentice” in support of his chosen charity, the American Diabetes Association. The singer, who was diagnosed as a child with Type 1 diabetes, was first sidelined on April 12, when he was rushed to a hospital for an emergency appendectomy. Ten days later, he suffered a brain hemorrhage that kept him in the intensive care unit for two weeks. After making rapid progress, though, Michaels is in the midst of intensive physical rehab and announced last week that he will make his live return at the Hard Rock Live in Biloxi, Mississippi, on May 28. He is also reportedly set to begin a tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd on June 10 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Before any of that, though, Michaels will pay a visit to “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Wednesday to discuss his recent health travails. Ronnie James Dio Remembered As ‘One Of The Nicest Guys’ By Metal Peers

Members of Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, Anthrax, more mourn the vocalist, who died Sunday. By Ryan J. Downey  Ronnie James Dio Photo: Steve Thorne/ Getty Images Friends, disciples and fans throughout the heavy metal community are remembering the late Ronnie James Dio as not only one of the best but one of the kindest vocalists in history. The singer for Black Sabbath, Rainbow and of course, Dio, succumbed to cancer on Sunday at age 67. “The world has lost a real talent and a genuinely great man,” Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor said in an e-mail to MTV News. “Words cannot describe my sadness and music will never be the same without his voice and honesty. He will always be an icon to heavy metal and hard rock. On behalf of all of the fans and the singers inspired by his life, we will miss you, Ronnie.” “Few people have had the ability to carry a song like Dio, literally demanding your attention as he effortlessly re-created live the amazing things he did on record,” Slayer guitarist Kerry King told MTV. “It’s odd how things get taken from you quickly. I just saw him a month ago. I know I was lucky to have known Ronnie, one of the nicest guys in the business, without a doubt. He will be hugely missed.” Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian echoed that common sentiment: “Ronnie was the nicest man in metal,” he declared. “Every day on tour,
