‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Katie And Andrew Ignore Adam Lambert’s Wisdom

Meanwhile, Ryan Seacrest’s erratic behavior was the only thing keeping us watching. By Jim Cantiello Katie Stevens and Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images “American Idol” in 60 Seconds has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you Jim Cantiello’s bite-size recap of this week’s “Idol” high jinks. This week, “American Idol” producers targeted the tween demo by forcing the top nine to sing the songs of Elvis Presley! And where better to rehearse than on the stage of the Cirque du Elvis Las Vegas stage show?! Adam Lambert broke all sorts of barriers by being the first openly-“Idol” contestant to return to the show as a guest mentor. Although Adam’s advice was spot-on and intuitive (Yo, Andrew, stop being a bore! Yo, Aaron Kelly, stop being a 5-year-old! Yo, Lee Dewyze, Jocelyn Wildenstein moves her face more than you!) most of the contestants blatantly ignored his wisdom. The result? An episode as entertaining as “3000 Miles to Graceland.” Yep, it was that bad. The only thing that kept viewers from switching over to “Lost” was Ryan Seacrest’s increasingly erratic behavior. He slow-danced during Tim Urban’s (kind of awesome) performance; he slurred his speech; he made inappropriate comments to contestants; he forgot he was on live television — it was like Paula Abdul never left “Idol.” So congratulations, Mariah Carey! Your loopy “TRL” appearance from 2001 is no longer the craziest thing we’ve seen on live television. On Wednesday night’s results show (which featured a double elimination), we learned that “Idol Gives Back” will have the same lineup as the one from two years ago. (Basically.) We also learned that Kara DioGuardi is somehow even more unappealing when she’s holding an adorable African baby. How is that even possible? Two “Idol” alums returned to sing a song, and each brought something special to the stage. Adam Lambert brought lasers and a glittery ear monitor, while Brooke White brought along deadweight in the form of Miley Cyrus’ tone deaf ex-boyfriend, Justin Gaston. Once results time arrived, Andrew was the first to get the boot, and he straight up didn’t sing “Straight Up” as his farewell song. By the end of the hour, Katie Stevens was the other singer sent packing, putting the “cut” in “Connecticut.” Next week is “Idol Gives Back,” which means we’ll hear inspirational ballads from the top seven. You’ve been warned. Do you think Katie and Andrew were eliminated too soon? What was the highlight of this week’s “Idol”? Share your opinions in the comments! Adam Lambert Returns To ‘American Idol’ Stage With ‘Whataya Want From Me’

‘I brought lasers!’ the season-eight runner-up jokes at the end of his dramatic performance. By Larry Carroll Adam Lambert performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox There’s an old saying that you can’t go home again. On Wednesday night (April 14), however, Adam Lambert did exactly that — and left a worldwide audience welcoming him back with open arms. “Adam is the King!” read a sign held in the air by an “American Idol” audience member, moments before the season-eight runner-up took the stage in the newest role of his career: music icon. Appearing as a mentor on Tuesday’s episode , Lambert reminded the “AI” folks why he’s a fan favorite. “There’s someone on the stage they’re excited about,” Ryan Seacrest beamed as he introduced Lambert, who then took over the show. Performing his single “Whataya Want From Me,” Lambert was bathed in green light and smoke, like something out of an early ’80s new-wave video. It was an appropriate setting, since the song feels like a hit from the heyday of Depeche Mode and New Order. “Yeah, it’s plain to see/ That baby you’re beautiful and it’s nothing wrong with you,” Lambert sang onstage. “It’s me, I’m a freak/ But thanks for lovin’ me, ’cause you’re doing it perfectly.” Wearing a suit, skinny tie and his signature guy-liner, Lambert gave an emotional performance. When he hit the high note at the end of the song, it nearly seemed like he was on the verge of tears. “Now that’s a performance,” Seacrest marveled as he stepped onstage after the final note. “Wow!” “I brought lasers!” the playful Lambert remarked about his retro stage lighting. “I wanted to do something a little different.” With the crowd still buzzing about his show-stopping performance, Lambert went on to say that “Idol” is the perfect training ground for a musical career. “We worked so hard on this show to give everybody a surprise every week,” he explained. “Thanks to ‘American Idol,’ because it prepared me to make it in the real world. I owe ‘American Idol’ everything.” What did you think of Adam’s performance? How do you think he did as a mentor? Let us know in the comments below! Katie Stevens And Andrew Garcia Sent Home On ‘American Idol’

‘Idol’ alums Adam Lambert and Brooke White, along with Justin Gaston, perform during results show. By Gil Kaufman Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox Despite doubling up on the eliminations thanks to Michael Lynche’s save last week, there were no major upsets on Wednesday night’s (April 14) “American Idol,” as bottom-three regulars Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens were sent into “AI” purgatory until this summer’s tour. It was a surprisingly dry-eyed goodbye, as the two underperforming singers appeared resigned to their fate as “Idol” footnotes. The eliminations came after a season-high 34 million votes were cast and, thankfully, the end came quickly for Andrew Garcia. Host Ryan Seacrest brought him out alongside Casey James and Aaron Kelly near the top of the show, and rather than putting him through the usual torture of waiting nearly 55 minutes to learn his fate, Seacrest abruptly said, “Andrew, it’s the end of the road. I’m sorry. America has voted. It’s the last chance tonight on ‘Idol.’ ” That meant James and Kelly advanced, while Garcia — who wowed the judges early on with his oft-cited cover of former judge Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” but never again brought that kind of thunder — was done in by his Velveeta take on Elvis’ “Hound Dog.” He went out singing James Morrison’s “You Give Me Something” from the semifinals. “I appreciate everything,” the often-emotional Garcia said. “I’m glad I’m here. I’m glad I’ve been through what I’ve been through. You guys let me experience something that I’ve never experienced.” The second to go was teen Katie Stevens, whose bluesy, brassy “Baby What Do You Want Me to Do” landed her in the bottom three for the third and final time after Simon Cowell called her performance annoying, shrieky and too loud. Stevens said she’d tell her friends about the amazing people she met and the unbelievable experience she had on the show. Trying to fight back tears, she reprised her cover of the Beatles’ “Let It Be,” her voice cracking at times. Joining Aaron and Casey in safety were Lee Dewyze, Crystal Bowersox (who tootled a little ditty on her harmonica in celebration), Siobhan Magnus and “Teflon” Tim Urban, who again escaped elimination and was sent to safety as Lynche and Stevens were left awaiting their fate near show’s end. After serving as this week’s mentor, season-eight runner-up Adam Lambert showed the kids how it’s done with a smoke-and-lasers new-wave blowout of his hit “Whataya Want From Me.” Also performing were season-seven finalist Brooke White and “If I Can Dream” web star — and Miley Cyrus’ ex — Justin Gaston, who teamed up for a schmaltzy cover of, you guessed it, “If I Can Dream.” The obligatory group lip-synch included an extra cheesy, show-tuney medley of “Burning Love,” “Teddy Bear,” “Return to Sender” and “Viva Las Vegas” that would have had even jumpsuit-wearing fat Elvis waddling for the exits. Next week’s theme is “inspirational songs,” and the shows will coincide with the “Idol Gives Back” charity event. It has not yet been announced if producers will forego an elimination during the fundraiser, as they did in its inaugural year in 2007; Michael Johns was sent home during the 2008 event. Among the acts pitching in next week are Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood, the Black Eyed Peas, Annie Lennox and Jeff Beck. Were you surprised Andrew and Katie were sent home? OneRepublic Are ‘Freaked Out’ By U2 And Bon Jovi Warm-Up Gigs

‘I have a little bit of Bieber fever … but not as much as Bono fever,’ frontman Ryan Tedder tells MTV News. By James Montgomery OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder Photo: MTV News If you’re a hitmaking machine like OneRepublic, you generally don’t agree to open for anyone. But when two of the biggest acts in the business extend offers to serve as curtain-jerkers, you have to at least think twice. And say yes, apparently. Because this summer, OneRepublic will open for both Bon Jovi and U2, and one of those gigs will see them perform with Jon Bon at the brand-new Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey, a slot akin to opening for the Pope at the Vatican. “We just got asked to open up the first musical performance at the new Meadowlands Stadium, in New Jersey … so that’s going to be crazy,” OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder laughed. “Something like 70-80,000 New Jerseyans, opening up for Bon Jovi in his home state. So we have to do something special for that. I’m not sure just what, but it’ll be something. Maybe we’ll work a Bruce Springsteen cover into the set.” And since they’ve agreed to two high-profile tours, the guys in OneRepublic know they have to step up their game. A Boss cover just isn’t going to cut it. “It’s kind of like the Olympics: You have America, and then you have Bermuda. They both compete on the same stage, at the same level; one’s just got a little bit of catching up to do,” Tedder said. “So I’d like to think of us as somewhere between Bermuda and, maybe Switzerland, and Bon Jovi’s probably America. Or maybe Canada at the Winter Olympics.” And while the gigs with Bon Jovi are certainly going to be huge, it’s their opening slot on U2’s upcoming tour that really had Tedder and the boys excited — so much so that the mere thought of meeting Bono has them morphing into squealing pre-teens. “The U2 stuff, I mean, that’s kind of why we started a band. … I’m still kind of freaked out about it. And I’m not a guy who takes a bunch of pictures and video, but I’m going to be filming the whole thing. [We’ll be like] one of those idiots, backstage, Twittering our rosy little fingers off,” he laughed. “For all those kids out there, it’s kind of like how you feel about Bieber. Bono is Bieber to us. I have a little bit of Bieber fever too, but not as much as Bono fever. I have a full-on rash. A Bono-sized rash.” Will you check out OneRepublic’s warm-up gigs for Bon Jovi or U2? B.o.B Is Surprised By ‘Dramatic Impact’ Of ‘Nothin’ On You’

‘Me and my managers, we still look at each other speechless,’ rapper says of #2 single. By Steven Roberts B.o.B Photo: MTV News B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ on You” has become something of a surprise smash hit. Released in early February, the song steadily climbed the Billboard and iTunes charts and is currently perched at #2 on both, with what seems like a real shot at #1. MTV News recently caught up with B.o.B., who was as surprised as anyone by the single’s crossover success. The Atlanta rapper admitted he and his managers are still dumbfounded. “We really didn’t expect it to have the dramatic impact it had, nor how fast it happened,” B.o.B said. “Me and my managers, B. Rich and TJ, we still look at each other speechless. We always aim to be successful. But when the byproduct exceeds your expectations — when usually you barely make the basket with what you want — the gratitude is through the roof. It’s literally a dream come true.” The song features Hawaiian crooner Bruno Mars, who did double duty singing the infectious hook and producing the track as one half of production duo the Smeezingtons (Flo Rida’s “Right Round”). B.o.B said he and Mars had worked together before, but “Nothin’ on You” has become the goose that laid the golden egg. “I’ve worked with Bruno Mars a lot, and I would say this is the golden egg that we hatched,” B.o.B. said. “Bruno’s got a lot more up his sleeve, so I’m glad that he’s really doing his thing and making the best of this time.” B.o.B speculated that “Nothin’ on You” is doing so well because its sincerity makes it relatable to women everywhere. He said that sometimes girls who feel insecure need a boost of confidence from their significant other. “I feel like [the song] kind of spoke to ‘that crowd,’ ” he smiled, “which is a huge crowd apparently.” Related Artists B.o.B

Miranda Cosgrove Urges The ‘Importance’ Of After-School Programs

The ‘iCarly’ star has teamed up with the Quaker Chewy Afterschool Rocks campaign. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Miranda Cosgrove Photo: MTV News Miranda Cosgrove already has a pretty sweet after-school program to keep her busy: her hit Nickelodeon series “iCarly.” But the teen star is doing her part to help ensure that other kids have something positive to get into when the last bell rings. The actress teamed up with Quaker Oats for Quaker Chewy Afterschool Rocks, a campaign co-sponsored by the nonprofit Afterschool Alliance . The aim of the partnership is to extend access to affordable, quality after-school programs to students across the country. Cosgrove thinks the cause is vital. “It’s really cool,” she told MTV News. “They’re bringing after-school programming back to schools.” In March, Cosgrove hung out with a group of students at PS 72 in Harlem, New York. “I got to meet all the kids, and they did a choreographed dance,” said Cosgrove, who was treated to a performance by the 90’s Babies dance troupe, an offshoot of the Harlem RBI sports-based educational program. But Cosgrove is not just a spokesperson. The actress — whose album Sparks Fly is due later this month — will be performing a private concert for about 300 guests. Fans can enter to win a ticket through the Chewy Afterschool Rocks sweepstakes . “I just think that after-school programs are really important,” Cosgrove said. “I remember when I was little, my big thing was I was on a baseball team. I remember it as one of my favorite memories. I went out with my dad and got a whole baseball outfit. And I made up a team name. We called ourselves the Rose Buds.” What after-school programs are you involved in? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Miranda Cosgrove

Lil Wayne’s ‘I’m Single’ Video Premieres On MTV2 Sunday!

Scoob Doo-helmed clip is for song from Wayne’s No Ceilings mixtape. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne and Scoob Doo Photo: Nino Brown Scoob Scorsese is getting ready to debut his biggest movie yet. DJ Scoob Doo has spun records at parties and clubs, made mixtapes and stepped out as Lil Wayne’s cinematographer in the DVD reality series “The Nino Brown Story.” Now he’s taking his next step: video director. Scoob helmed the video for Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” from the No Ceilings mixtape , and it officially debuts Sunday on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Sunday Countdown” and MTV Jams. “The thing with Wayne, if you don’t get a chance to see how hard he worked on the record, and the wit and pizzazz he had with it, he wants to give you that same feeling the first time you hear it,” Scoob told MTV News. “Which he does audio-wise, but him performing it for you in the studio is what really it’s about as far as this video.” In the clip for “I’m Single,” we see Wayne play and perform the song for the first time. “I was there, Mack Maine was there,” Scoob says. “Mally G was there. This is the first time he’s playing it. It’s history. When you hear a song for the first time, you always remember where you was when you heard it. Even if the cameras wasn’t there to capture it, that’s exactly what it would be. That’s the great thing about the video, it’s authentic. It’s your front seat. Enjoy your seat!” The short also has a storyline element. “[Wayne’s girl was made that] he didn’t make it home in time,” Scoob explained of the plot. “He stayed out all night. That’s the idea I got with the song. It brought me back to watching the film ‘A Thin Line Between Love and Hate.’ Me growing up watching Martin [Lawrence], it was epic, it was a funny movie. I loved the cinematography in it. [Writing the script for the video], that was me being a fan of that movie and good music and putting it together.” The video also stars models Natasha and Tammy Torres (from Wayne’s “Mrs. Officer” video). “Tammy Torres is the mistress,” Scoob detailed. “She’s the reason Wayne didn’t make it home — the reason why he’s single for the night. Natasha is the one who has heartache. She’s scorned to the point where she turns crazy and deranged. You don’t wanna cross that thin line.” Scoob said people shouldn’t be surprised to see him in the director chair. It’s something he’s been pursuing for quite some time, he’s just taking the opportunity now. “It’s not something I would call a transition,” he said. “This is something I’ve been doing for a while. I’m excited that we’re making a big deal out of it because I’ve been working hard. I didn’t have to change my format of what I’ve been doing. The people that know me, they are so excited right now. This is exactly what they’ve been campaigning and promoting for years.” The clip is one of many that Wayne filmed before he began his prison sentence on weapons charges last month. Scoob has “The Nino Brown Story Part III” coming up, as well as the Birdman’s “The Godfather” DVD — there’s a video for Birdman’s “Bigger Than Life” that Scoob directed in the can as well. Don’t miss Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” video, premiering Sunday on MTV2’s “Sucker Free” and MTV Jams! “Sucker Free” airs at 12 p.m. ET. Justin Bieber Back On Top Of Billboard Albums Chart

Solo album from former Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash debuts at #3. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 Photo: Island The pupil has quickly become the teacher. Just one week after Justin Bieber ‘s mentor, Usher , topped the charts, the Canadian teen will climb back into the #1 spot next week with his second album, My World 2.0. After falling back a spot to make room for the chart debut of Usher’s Raymond v Raymond , Bieber reclaimed the pole position with 102,000 in sales, despite a 65 percent drop-off in business, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That gives the “Baby” singer a three-week total of more than 675,000. And while Usher’s sales slipped 72 percent in week two, his 92,000 was enough to keep the self-titled debut solo album from former Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash down at #3 on sales of 60,000. The only other newcomer in the top 10 is the live CD/DVD from Madonna, Sticky & Sweet Tour, which moved 28,000 units. The rest of the top 10 is largely unchanged, with this year’s top-selling album, Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now, at #4 (57,000), Now 33 (#5, 53,000), Monica’s Still Standing (#6, 38,000), Lady Gaga’s The Fame (#7, 32,000), Bieber’s My World (#8, 30,000) and Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh (#9, 30,000). Just outside the top 10, Jakob Dylan’s second solo album, Women and Country, have a soft landing at #12 (26,000), soul belter Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings hit #15 in the first week for I Learned the Hard Way (23,000), and Sigur Ros singer/guitarist Jonsi has a solid debut at #23 with the solo album Go (15,000). Thanks to the hype surrounding the video for their existential world-of-wonder rhyme “Miracles” , greasepaint rappers Insane Clown Posse storm back up the charts to #55 with Bang! Pow! Boom! (8,000). Much further down the list, the collaboration between former Talking Heads leader David Byrne and DJ Fatboy Slim, the Imelda Marcos concept album Here Lies Love, debuts at #94 (5,000), while E-40’s Revenue Retrievin’ albums both take a solid hit, with Night Shift dropping 51 spots to #100 (5,000) and Day Shift slipping 61 to #108 (5,000). And while Adam Lambert’s debut, For Your Entertainment, holds relatively steady at #76 (6,000) — with a likely bump next week, following the “American Idol” season 8 runner-up’s mentoring gig on the show this week — the self-titled bow from the man that beat him, Kris Allen, falls off the charts for the first time since its release in November. At less than 300,000 copies, Kris Allen is officially the lowest-selling debut album from an “Idol” winner in the show’s history. Next week will bring chart bows from MTV Musical March Madness winners Coheed and Cambria and MGMT, whose Congratulations has met with lukewarm critical response so far. Coheed And Cambria Call Year Of The Black Rainbow ‘Accessible’

‘The lyrics are a bit more universal, and the themes that are in the songs are universal,’ Claudio Sanchez tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Coheed and Cambria Photo: MTV News By their own admission, Coheed and Cambria’s Year of the Black Rainbow, which hit stores Tuesday (April 13), is their most “accessible” album to date. That sort of makes us wonder how they define the term “accessible” in the first place. For proof, here’s frontman Claudio Sanchez to explain the story line behind the disc. “It’s [about] the origin of Coheed and Cambria. Basically, this void forms above Heaven’s Fence, which is deemed ‘the Black Rainbow’ because no one really knows what it is,” Sanchez said. “And half the inhabitants believe that maybe it’s the Hand of God and the unfortunate things that are about to come. Or it’s confirmation that Wilhelm Ryan, the evil dictator that is ruling all of Heaven’s Fence, this is the confirmation that he is God. And that actually kind of creates this civil unrest. … It spawns the creation of Coheed and Cambria.” Totally. And while Rainbow is the prequel to the band’s “Armory Wars” story line (which has played out over the course of their four previous albums), Sanchez and his mates maintain that no previous knowledge of the rather lengthy — and slightly insane — sci-fi backstory is necessary to enjoy it. Because, really, at its core, it’s an album about universal subjects like love, loss and sacrifice — with about 50 bajillion really killer guitar lines thrown in for good measure. “In the past, the concept has never really been an essential part for the listener to enjoy the music. I’ve had fans come up to us who have no idea that there’s a concept behind what we do,” Sanchez said. “And for myself, as a lyricist, I think I’ve become a bit more open, and the lyrics are a bit more universal, and the themes that are in the songs are universal. So I like to think of it as accessible in that world. Everybody can really enjoy it. It’s not necessary to get into all the other details.” “People keep telling us that it’s ‘accessible,’ and it’s hard for us to tell if it is or not,” bassist Mic Todd added. “That’s a good thing, though. We want people to hear it. We’re incredibly proud of it all. … We think it shows our growth as musicians and songwriters.” So now that their Armory Wars saga is complete, are Coheed — who stopped by the MTV Newsroom on Tuesday to pick up their Musical March Madness Championship Cup — going to put the whole “concept album” thing behind them? Will the next C&C album be (gasp!) a straightforward, totally kick-ass rock album? “Time will tell. We’re all really proud of this record. I think it really reflects who we are as a band and who we are as individuals, and if the band were to stop, this is the full [story,] part one to four-and-a-half. It’s all there,” Sanchez said. “And there’s always ideas to keep going further into the past of the story. … I think we could do whatever we want, really. I think that I’ve become a little more open, and the universal themes of the story line are kind of blossoming on this one. But who knows?” Are you excited to get your hands on Coheed’s new album? Eminem Collaboration ‘Was A Gift,’ B.o.B Says

‘He wanted to get in the studio with me,’ B.o.B says of Em’s work on his ‘Airplanes (Part II)’ track. By Steven Roberts B.o.B. Photo: MTV News Eminem is a busy guy — he isn’t exactly the most accessible artist to work with, which is part of the reason why his guest spots on songs like Lil Wayne’s “Drop the World” and Drake’s “Forever” are such big deals. He doesn’t just do it for anybody, because not just anybody can keep up with him. So when the track list for B.o.B ‘s debut album The Adventures of Bobby Ray was released, it was a surprise to see Em’s name included. B.o.B scored a guest spot from an enthusiastic Eminem on “Airplanes (Part II),” also featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore . Marshall Mathers said Paul Rosenberg introduced him to B.o.B’s work, starting with his first mixtape Cloud 9, and he liked what he heard. “Paul Rosenberg played him the Cloud 9 mixtape and it kind of gave him an idea of what my music,” B.o.B explained. “Eventually he started playing Em more of my stuff and was keeping him updated on my progress and eventually he wanted to get in the studio with me, so that was a gift.” According to B.o.B, working in the studio with Em was like being in a laboratory with a mad scientist, watching and observing how everything works. But he was happy to find that while each artist has different methods, they’re all trying to find that zone. “It’s really reassuring to know that every artist has a way of working but it’s all … the essence of it all to get in that vibe and to get in that zone, and everybody has a different way to get in that zone,” B.o.B offered. “It’s good to see a different way, because you know, ‘OK, I can do this or I can do that.’ It kind of showed me where I was thinking inside of a box and where I can open up even more.” What do you think of the collaboration between Eminem and B.o.B?
