Erykah Badu’s Naked ‘Window Seat’ Shoot ‘Shocks’ Dallas City Councilman

‘It was not the right choice to go and perform the video as it was performed,’ Dwaine Caraway tells MTV News. By MTV News staff Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway knows Erykah Badu , and he’s always been impressed by the Texas native’s philanthropic ventures and support of D-town causes. But Caraway had to shake his head when news broke that one of the city’s favorite daughters ran buck naked down the streets of downtown while filming the viral Molotov cocktail that is her “Window Seat” video . “I’m a fan and personally know Erykah, and she’s a trooper here for our city,” Caraway said. “However, governing the city as we are expected to, it was not the right choice to go and perform the video as it was performed.” Despite his praise for her civic pride and engagement, Caraway — the man behind the local “Pull ‘Em Up” campaign to stop sagging pants — said he and fellow City Council members were definitely taken aback by Badu’s permit-free guerrilla action on St. Patrick’s Day. Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’: Shot By Shot “There should have been a permit issued for the filming,” he said. “Had there been a permit, then certain boundaries would have come into play and it wouldn’t be such outright shock.” Dallas Police told MTV News that had Badu’s actions been observed by one of their officers, she might have faced both a $4,000 fine and up to a year in jail, a sentence the video’s directors said she was more than willing to deal with in order to get her message across. But, because no officer witnessed the naked shoot, no charges are likely to be filed, and Caraway said no sanction will be forthcoming from the Council because no complaints have been lodged over the incident from witnesses. The councilman hasn’t reached out to Badu to speak to her about the stunt, but he said once his fellow council members are back from spring break next week, he expects some vigorous debate about the video. “I’m sure something will come up for discussion, and there will be some talk about changing the rules and putting some preventatives in place, and I’m certain something will come from it,” Caraway said. That said, given the worldwide attention “Window Seat” has garnered, Caraway figured that the video accomplished what Badu set out to in terms of hyping the release of her new album, New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh). “It’s a win-win for her,” he said. “Even if we were to fine her a million dollars, she’ll probably make $200 million.” Do you think Dallas should take any action against Badu’s video? Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’ Video: Our Favorite Bystanders

The unnamed people of Dallas are almost as entertaining as the disrobing singer they’re watching. By James Montgomery Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” video is marvelous for many reasons, and not just because the Princess of Nu-Soul gets naked at the end. We love the historical feel of the clip and the politically (and socially) charged nature of the whole thing, but what’s really great about it is that it holds up after repeated viewings. Mostly because it’s so fun to watch the action unfolding around Badu — the shocked expressions of passersby, the reactions of the innocent bystanders — it’s almost like a video within the video. And so, to shine a spotlight on some of her unheralded (and unwitting) co-stars, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite ancillary characters. These are the brave men and women who have captured our hearts and imaginations, whether they know it or not. It’s our salute to the unidentified citizens of Dallas, for their excellence in background acting. May they enjoy their 15 minutes. Guy in the Red Jacket (appears at 1:40 mark) : We like him because he is a gentleman, picking up Badu’s jacket (and shoes) as she discards them, then sprinting down the block in an attempt to return them to her. Perhaps realizing that he has stumbled into a music-video shoot, he eventually stops. He could be the thief she tweeted about over the weekend who ran off with her clothing. Also, he sort of resembles a blurry Namond Brice from season four of “The Wire.” WTF Dude (2:05) : Easily the most blatant Badu-gawker in the entire video, this gentleman in a gray button-down, jeans and sweet shades can hardly be blamed for a) taking a good long gander and b) being utterly perplexed by what he sees. How would you react if a multiplatinum recording artist sauntered by in the buff? The 2010 MTV Movie Awards are honoring the best mystifying moments at the cinema, and we have to say zombie Bill Murray and projectile-vomiting Megan Fox have nothing on our WTF Dude. Kid Out for a Stroll With His Grandfather (2:10) : Makes his entrance just after WTF Dude, and much like him, the kid’s not ashamed to stare. In fact, he does so twice, though Grandpa doesn’t seem to notice what’s going on. We’re not sure why he’s wearing a blue baseball cap and a matching blue shirt, but we applaud his commitment to coordination. Unless he’s a member of the Crips, which would just be weird. Mom Shielding Kids (2:53) : Kudos to this mom — in jeans and short-sleeve shirt, flanked by two young children — for not being distracted by the sight of a woman doffing her top in the middle of a busy intersection. Though her daughter attempts to sprint across the street, mom holds tight to her young one’s hand, even as she tries to process just what in the holy hell is going on. Hey, Mom, even we’re not sure at this point, and we’ve watched this video 15 times. Kevin Smith (4:05) : OK, so this isn’t actually the critic-baiting , Southwest-hating director, but any time we see a hirsute, slightly husky guy in jean shorts and a bowling shirt, we can’t help but think of Smith. Plus, he doesn’t even break stride when approached by a nearly nude Soul Queen and a camera crew, which leads us to believe that he’s probably got some on-set experience. Guy Twirling Keys (4:33) : He’s got something on a lanyard, and we love that he’s absentmindedly flailing it around just as Badu removes her bra. That’s dedication. Also, we wonder why he’s standing there. Is he on his lunch break? Perhaps waiting for the bus? These are the things that keep us awake at night. Conflicted Blond Couple (4:36): Man in striped shirt and jeans, woman in black top and jeans. While the woman immediately looks away when she sees a pedestrian with her lady lumps exposed, her man has no such discretion. We salute this woman for not applying a sharp elbow to the creepy guy’s ribs. Violence is never the answer … as Ms. Badu will soon discover. Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’ Nudity Could Have Gotten Her A Year In Jail

Dallas police said guerilla shoot broke public indecency laws; directors say they had bail money ready. By Gil Kaufman Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Erykah Badu literally was willing to bare it all for her “Window Seat” video . But when the singer and a small crew took to the streets of her native Dallas on St. Patrick’s Day to shoot the provocative clip, they did so without an official permit and, they said, with full knowledge that the guerilla adventure could land them in jail — for up to a year. “They definitely did not get a permit,” said Senior Corporal Janice Crowther of the Dallas Police Department of the video, in which Badu slowly strips out of her clothes until she is standing naked on the same spot where President Kennedy was gunned down in Dealey Plaza in 1963, and then is shot herself by an unseen sniper. “To shoot that video they would have had to get a special events permit from the events office and it would have had to specify what type of filming they were doing, what subjects they would use and any traffic control they would need.” Crowther said such a shoot would also typically require a police officer to be standing by while filming was going on. Not only did the Badu video not have that police presence, but if an officer had been on site, Crowther said they would not have allowed it to go on. Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’: Shot By Shot “That’s more than likely why they circumvented the permit,” she said. Directors Coodie and Chike of Creative Control told MTV News that they did not apply for or obtain any permits for the shoot and kept a keen eye out for any police while filming. “What was crazy was the fact that … it’s a high tourist area, so there was patrol cars all day, and I [was hearing] sirens, looking up and seeing some kind of sherriff’s car or something,” Chike recalled to MTV News on Monday. “So I was like, ‘This is gonna be interesting.’ Her contingency plan was get arrested — she was big on doing it.” “We had bail money and everything,” Coodie chimed in. “I think she really wanted to get arrested and even make a bigger message. You know what I’m saying?” As soon as it wrapped, they said, Badu was hustled into a van and whisked from the area. “And then people were like, ‘I’m calling the police!’ ” Chike said. “It was nothing but two or three people, it was nothing that crazy at all,” Coodie said. “There was that one lady, though, that was really crazy, she was like, ‘That was so offensive!’ ” A spokesperson for Badu’s label had not responded to MTV News’ requests for comment or details of the shoot. Had Badu been spotted by an officer, she could have been arrested for a class B misdemeanor charge of indecent exposure, which carries a fine of up to $2,000 and a jail term of up to 180 days, or both, Crowther said. But, considering that there were children present during the shoot, Crowther said that charge would probably have been bumped up to a Class A enhanced indecent exposure charge, which pushes the fine up to a maximum of $4,000 and up to one year in jail, or both. Because there were no officers who witnessed the nudity in the shoot first-hand — which Crowther said likely took less than 90 seconds to complete — it’s unclear what, if anything, Dallas police can do about it. “No charges have been filed thus far,” she said. “We need a witness to testify to prosecute a case, but people were probably so shocked, and it happened so fast, that we don’t have any record of anyone calling 911. We have not had any witnesses come forth to press charges.” If a witness does come forward and lodge a complaint, however, it’s still possible that Badu and her crew could face some police sanction, according to Crowther. If a police officer witnessed the shoot and comes forward, the charge could be stronger. What do you think of Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” video? Should charges be pressed for her public indecency? Notorious B.I.G.’s Music Gets New Life On ‘Video Remix Collection’

Ralph McDaniels and J.Period blend Biggie’s songs with new beats and visuals on the mixtape DVD, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Notorious B.I.G. Photo: Getty Images Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape DVD : “March 9: Video Remix Collection” Headliners : The Notorious B.I.G., Ralph McDaniels and J.Period Key Cameos : No guest stars, but you have to check for the blends. “Flava in Ya Ear” over the track from Jay-Z’s “P.S.A.” “Hypnotize” over the track from Eric B and Rakim’s “Paid in Full.” “One More Chance” over the instrumental from Mary Jane Girls’ “All Night Long” and the Gap Band’s “Outstanding.” Essential Info : Ralph McDaniels is hip-hop. He’s been documenting the culture since the beginning. In the early ’80s, McDaniels, then a college student, would tape footage of hip-hop godfathers like Grand Master Flash and Melle Mel, not because he had an outlet to put it on, but because he knew in his heart that the culture had to be recorded. Thirty years later, McDaniels can be considered an architect himself, with his New York-based video program “Video Music Box” becoming a staple in rap. It was the place where you could find all videos from new artists as well as the stars every day after school. Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, BBD, KRS-One and countless others not only sent their videos in, they gave McDaniels interviews at a time when we didn’t see much hip-hop on TV. One of McDaniels’ favorite subjects was the Notorious B.I.G. Uncle Ralph described Biggie as being very serious in the booth but a jokester that could rival the Kings of Comedy when he wasn’t working. McDaniels also remembers Biggie as a “student of the game.” “I have footage of him at a Big Daddy Kane concert, and he was just in the crowd,” McDaniels told Mixtape Daily. “He was a student of the game. He knew Kane was an MC from Brooklyn that came early. That told me a lot. He wasn’t anybody yet; he was just a cat trying to get on. To be around a guy like that, hilarious. I would want to be a Junior M.A.F.I.A. member just to be down with that cat there.” McDaniels recently teamed with J.Period to salute Big Poppa with a collection of remix videos called “March 9: Video Remix Collection.” “This thing was kinda the next evolution of the March 9th remix project I started on the 10th anniversary of Big passing with my man G. Brown,” Period explained. “I been speaking to Ralph for a minute — I love what he does; he likes what I do with the mixtapes — about finding a way to collabo. This seems like the best first step: Find somebody like Big, take the remixes and see what happens. When you set it to video, it takes it to life in a whole new way.” “I always like looking for something new, something different,” McDaniels said. “I was familiar with J.Period’s original CD mixtape. I was like, ‘This is kinda dope.’ That’s when we started talking about it. So I’ll take the visuals. Sometimes, the visuals don’t match, because there might be edits and all kinds of things like that involved. I have to find something that fits for that particular scene. I have to use my imagination and think about the fans as well. What would they like to see? Because I’m a music-video person, I live for the visuals. … We try to input some of these things in to the video mixes. Biggie don’t have a lot of videos he did, maybe only like five or six videos he was in. So we had to get creative. Thankfully, the ones we put out, they were ones he had videos for. But there’s some songs like ‘Party and Bullsh–‘ that there were no videos for. But there’s footage out there of him performing. That’s the creative stuff we had to work on fitting it together.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Jae Millz

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s Flesh-N-Bone Arrested At An Ohio Show

Rapper had two outstanding warrants for his arrest due to a domestic dispute with his mom 12 years earlier. By Christopher Campbell Flesh-N-Bone Photo: Valerie Macon/ Getty Images Rapper Flesh-N-Bone, of the Grammy-winning hip-hop group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, was arrested in Ohio on Sunday for assaulting his mother, according to The Associated Press. The incident occurred in Solon, Ohio, 12 years ago, and the rapper, whose real name is Stanley Howse, was in the local area with his act for a sold-out hometown performance at Cleveland’s House of Blues. The concert was part of the group’s reunion tour, which they kicked off last Wednesday, and marked Howse’s first time in the state in more than a decade. He apparently did not expect two outstanding warrants for his arrest to disrupt the show. Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s deputies planned to take Howse into custody after Bone Thugs-N-Harmony finished their set. However, the rapper spotted the police in the crowd and attempted to make a getaway with help from members of the audience. He was apprehended backstage by one of the deputies with the assistance of the Cleveland Police Department. Howse remained in jail Monday (March 29) with no legal representation reported. He is charged with domestic violence with a firearm and felonious assault. He allegedly struck his mother in the head with a gun in 1998, leaving her with a 1-inch gash on her forehead. Since that time, Howse has had other troubles with the law. In 2000, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison in California on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and probation violation after aiming an AK-47 at a friend. He served eight years. In early 2009, he was again arrested for gun possession, but the charges were later dropped. According to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s Web site, a live Ustream chat scheduled for Monday had to be canceled and rescheduled. Related Artists Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’ Video Is Meant To ‘Inspire,’ Directors Say

‘She wanted to show expression,’ Coodie of Creative Control tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid Erykah Badu in “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” video almost didn’t end with the singer getting shot on the grassy knoll where JFK was assassinated. Several endings were tossed around, including one where a naked Badu turned the camera away from herself and onto her camera crew, who were also going to be nude. The fatal ending was a group effort between Badu and the video’s directors, Coodie and Chike of Creative Control. “She’s evolving,” Coodie said. “So it’s almost like you have to kill off the other person to do that.” “It was also to tie [the JFK assassination] in,” Chike added. “He was assassinated there for what reason? There were reasons for his assassination that dealt with him doing things that went against the norm for positive reasons. People try to assassinate your character when you try to step against the grain. That’s where the gunshot in the video came. Also, she was inspired by the Matt and Kim video [for ‘Lessons Learned’], where they did something shocking in the end.” Badu’s video debuted Sunday on her Web site at 3:03 a.m. (Badu has a thing for the number three. Her album New Amerykah 2: Return of the Ankh will be released on 3/30, and they started filming the video at precisely 3:33 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day.) In the clip, Badu walks to the grassy knoll, stripping down along the way. Finally, she gets shot in the head, and as she lay nude on the concrete, the words “Group Think” leak from her head instead of blood. “It was this redneck out there,” Coodie recalled of the shoot. “She was yelling, ‘Put your clothes on! There’s kids out here!’ She kept going on. Then, there was people out there that was looking. I was like, ‘It’s just a freedom of expression.’ And they was like, ‘You’re right.’ This one guy said that. It was cool.” The directing duo, who also produced Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks” and “Through The Wire,” said they’ve seen a mostly positive reaction to “Window Seat” on the Web. “I’ve actually been seeing way more positive reactions than I have negative reactions,” Chike said. “That’s cool to see, just in the times today. I feel like five years ago, it might have been different. Society has grown, so we accept something like this more than normal, than we usually would. I was nervous. You know how you’re excited to put something out, then you get that second emotion: ‘What if people don’t respond to it how they should respond to it?’ I was nervous when I went on the comments first.” Although Badu’s actions in the video are slowed down through editing, “Window Seat” was shot in real time. It took the length of the song to shoot the video. Originally, Badu was going to sing as she walked but decided not to. Days before she went in front of the camera, Badu spoke to her children, all three of their fathers and other family members to make sure everyone was OK with what she was going do. Everyone supported her. Then she had her own insecurities to deal with. “That was a concern of hers,” Chike said about the singer getting naked. “Her body, she’s a vegetarian, she also has three kids. So she was like, ‘I haven’t worked out,’ but it was cool. Nobody was trippin’ on that. Everybody thought she was super sexy. She has big assets, thick assets. … That totally wasn’t the point of the video. [She was] not trying to show off those things.” “She wanted to show expression,” Coodie added. “It was inspired by the Matt and Kim video. She said when she watched that, she got teary-eyed. We needed to be free too. That was her whole thing. She hopes her video can inspire people as well.” What did you think of the “Window Seat” video? Let us know in the comments! Ricky Martin Officially Comes Out

‘I am a fortunate homosexual man,’ Martin writes on his blog. By Jocelyn Vena Ricky Martin Photo: Dan MacMedan/ WireImage Ricky Martin has officially come out of the closet . The Latin pop superstar, who became a father to twin boys in 2008, made the announcement on his blog on Monday (March 29). In the blog post, he writes that he decided to share the truth about his sexuality after he began work on his memoirs. “A few months ago I decided to write my memoirs, a project I knew was going to bring me closer to an amazing turning point in my life,” he wrote. “From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside. Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating. “For many years, there has been only one place where I am in touch with my emotions fearlessly and that’s the stage,” he continued. “Being on stage fills my soul in many ways, almost completely. It’s my vice. The music, the lights and the roar of the audience are elements that make me feel capable of anything. This rush of adrenaline is incredibly addictive. I don’t ever want to stop feeling these emotions. But it is serenity that brings me to where I’m at right now. An amazing emotional place of comprehension, reflection and enlightenment. At this moment I’m feeling the same freedom I usually feel only on stage, without a doubt, I need to share.” In the blog post, he notes that throughout his career he has been advised to not talk about his sexuality. “Many people told me: ‘Ricky it’s not important,’ ‘it’s not worth it,’ ‘all the years you’ve worked and everything you’ve built will collapse,’ ‘many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature.’ Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth,” he wrote. “Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.” He noted that there are many things that he is more afraid of than “the truth” about who he is. “If someone asked me today, Ricky, what are you afraid of? I would answer the blood that runs through the streets of countries at war … child slavery, terrorism … the cynicism of some people in positions of power, the misinterpretation of faith.’ But fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, it fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day,” he wrote. “To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment. “These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed. “What will happen from now on? It doesn’t matter. I can only focus on what’s happening to me in this moment. The word ‘happiness’ takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment,” he wrote. “Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution.” He then concludes the post by saying: “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.” What do you think of Ricky Martin’s announcement? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Ricky Martin

Lil Wayne Not Involved In Weekend Brawl, Rikers Island Source Says

Source says Wayne is doing ‘well’ in jail. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News From all indications, Lil Wayne is doing fine in prison. He began his sentence on March 8 and arrived at Rikers Island later that day, and last week, his friend and associate Mack Maine posted a message on Twitter saying: “Jus left Rikers Island … Spoke wit Wayne for 2hrs … He’s good. Told me to tell y’all wadup … Special website komin soon … #thank God … LUV.” On Monday (March 29), a source inside Rikers Island who asked that his name not be made public gave MTV News some observations about how Wayne is holding up. “He’s doing well. He’s adapting to the situation,” the source said, adding that Wayne was not involved in a brawl that took place at the facility over the weekend in which 13 officers and three inmates were injured, according to New York’s Daily News . The incident reportedly occurred after inmates refused to be locked in for the night, and did not take place in the area of the facility where Wayne is being held. The source also scotched a rumor that Wayne got into a confrontation with another inmate just days after his sentencing. “That’s a rumor I heard, but nothing substantiated,” the source said, adding that Wayne is usually in protective custody and, for the most part, has been getting a positive reaction from inmates. However, the source said that some inmates seem not to be aware of his situation. “While he’s walking the hallways, he’s told not to communicate with these guys,” the source explained. “So they’re a bit disgruntled because he’s not hollering back.” Wayne was sentenced to a year in prison on gun-possession charges and could be released after serving eight months , assuming good behavior. Justin Bieber Reacts To ‘Bieber Fever’ At Kids’ Choice Awards

In response to screams of support at Saturday’s show, Bieber says he’s ‘happy to have so many fans.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News The highly contagious Bieber fever — known to infect mostly teenage girls, and a few celebrities ( minus Miley Cyrus ) — was in full force in Los Angeles over the weekend. Some of Bieber’s biggest fans were screaming their undying devotion to the star at the UCLA Pauley Pavilion, where he performed for the Kids’ Choice Awards . “It feels great. I’m just happy to be here, happy to have so many supportive fans,” Bieber told MTV News on the orange carpet, just moments before he hit the stage to sing his hit “Baby.” “Tonight, I’m performing, and I don’t know, I’m just gonna show everybody a great time,” he said. “We just recently started performing with a band, so that was big stuff. … We’re adding a lot of new elements. It’s going to be fun.” Among the A-listers who may be coming down with a little bit of the fever is Snoop Dogg , who called the 16-year-old “kind of cool,” despite the fact that Snoop’s Malice in Wonderland and Bieber’s My World 2.0 both dropped last week. “I met him at ‘We Are the World.’ It was amazing,” Bieber said of Snoop. “He was a really cool guy.
