Raekwon Remembers ODB Before Rock The Bells Tour Launch

Wu-Tang’s Chef expects crowd to fill in late MC’s verses as they perform 36 Chambers. By Shaheem Reid Wu-Tang Clan Photo: LOUD For fans of the architects of hip-hop, the countdown is almost over, and the annual fest that mixes hot newcomers with rap trailblazers is almost upon us. Guerilla Union’s annual Rock the Bells Tour starts Saturday at L.A.’s NOS Center with a historic lineup that includes Snoop Dogg, Slick Rick, the Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One and Rakim. Each of the headliners will perform a classic album from their catalog, and special guest Lauryn Hill will be igniting the stage with a bevy of her hits as well. Wu-Tang has chosen Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) as the LP for their set . The Clan’s Raekwon calls Rock the Bells the “royal rumble of hip-hop.” And while the Chef said he’s excited about revisiting the Clan’s breathtaking debut, he’ll definitely miss the show-stealing presence of late comrade Ol’ Dirty Bastard. “Dirty had given us the energy booster that we need to believe that we are the best,” Rae told MTV News recently in New York. “I still think about him. … I think as I’m getting a little older, I’m getting a little more sensitive in certain places when it comes to my brother being gone. “It’s gonna be fun to get out here and represent and talk about him and see all them fans go crazy because they love Dirty,” he continued. “They love Dirty so much, I know for a fact that when them records come on, they’re gonna go crazy.” Rae expects the crowd to fill in verses for their beloved brother during records such as “Shame on a N—a,” “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’ ” and, of course, “Protect Ya Neck.” “That’s a beautiful thing,” Rae said about crowd participation. “When I think about my brother not being here, it still keeps me wanting to keep that Wu-Tang flag as high as it can be. He was the one that really gave us all the spirit.” Will you be checking Wu-Tang out at Rock the Bells? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Ol’ Dirty Bastard Raekwon

Rock The Bells Lineup Adds Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Premier

Lauryn Hill will perform her classic debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, on three tour stops. By Jayson Rodriguez Snoop Dogg Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ Redferns Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest and DJ Premier have been added to the 2010 Rock the Bells bill , joining a lineup that already includes such legendary acts as the Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim, KRS-One, and Slick Rick. As part of a novel concept this year, all of the participants will perform one seminal album from their catalog in its entirety, with the exception of Premier, who will instead lead a tribute to his late Gangstarr music partner, Guru . (The MC died in April of cancer-related causes.) Also joining the festivities is Lauryn Hill. The former Fugees frontwoman was announced as a “special guest” last month, but Hill’s involvement in the show was clarified on Tuesday (June 8). Hill is slated to perform her now-classic debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The singer will be featured on the Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. legs of the four-city trek. The Rock the Bells Tour spans four U.S. cities, kicking off on August 21 at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California, then making stops at the Shoreline Amphitheater outside San Francisco on August 22, Governors Island in New York on August 28 and closing at Merriweather Post Pavilion, in the D.C. area, on August 29. Among the albums set to be performed from start to finish are Snoop’s Doggystyle, ATCQ’s Midnight Marauders, the Wu’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and KRS-One and Boogie Down Production’s Criminal Minded. Slick Rick’s The Great Adventures of Slick Rick and Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid in Full will also get a full performance. “That’s gonna be interesting to see these cats do some of the records that really bust hip-hop’s cherry open,” Raekwon told MTV News about the concept earlier this month. “I can’t wait to see this because I never seen it like that before. The concept is great. It gives fans the opportunity to go back and rewrite their history, go back and check it out, see what made dudes who they are. … This [tour] is gonna allow races to come together and have fun for one night. This is gonna be the event of events. This is gonna be the Royal Rumble of hip-hop. I’m sure that everybody is gonna come out and represent this. It’s gonna be right. I can’t wait.” Also filling out the bill are Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello’s side project with the Coup’s Boots Riley, Street Sweeper Social Club, as well as Murs & 9th Wonder, Wiz Khalifa, the Clipse, Immortal Technique, Brother Ali, Jedi Mind Tricks, Supernatural, DJ Muggs with Ill Bill, Big Sean, Yelawolf and DJ Rocky Rock. If you could choose any hip-hop act to perform their album in its entirety, who would you pick and which album? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Snoop Dogg A Tribe Called Quest DJ Premier

Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon Says Rock The Bells Tour ‘Concept Is Great’

‘We never sung the whole album,’ Raekwon says of performing entire Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) debut. By Shaheem Reid Raekwon Photo: Universal This summer, the Wu-Tang Clan return to headline the heralded Rock the Bells Tour . But unlike the Killer Bees’ previous stage ventures for the annual outing, the Clan’s set will have a twist. The group will perform their classic debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) — in its entirety. “We never did that before,” Raekwon the Chef told Mixtape Daily last week. “We never sung the whole album, the 36 Chambers. “That’s gonna be interesting to see these cats do some of the records that really bust hip-hop’s cherry open,” Rae said. I can’t wait.” Rae said every time he gets to perform among the legends that Rock the Bells welcomes onto its treks, he feels another year younger. “It’s always good to get out there with my brothers. We going to get money, pay them bills, take care of them kids. Then getting back in front of them fans again and giving them what they want,” the

By Gil Kaufman The Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon Photo: Graham Denholm/ Getty Images This summer’s “Rock the Bells” tour will feature some of hip-hop’s most legendary MCs and crews performing iconic albums in full. Among the acts on the lineup announced on Tuesday (May 25) on the tour’s site are the Wu-Tang Clan , who will serve up their groundbreaking 1993 debut, Enter the 36 Chambers ; Rakim performing 1987’s landmark Paid in Full ; KRS-One doing 1987’s Criminal Minded and Slick Rick , who will run through his iconic 1988 debut, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. The tour announcement also mentions “special guest” Lauryn Hill, but does not elaborate on what role the former Fugees and solo star will play on the tour. With more names to be added later, the current lineup also features Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello’s side project with the Coup’s Boots Riley, Street Sweeper Social Club, as well as Murs & 9th Wonder, Wiz Khalifa, the Clipse, Immortal Technique, Brother Ali, Jedi Mind Tricks, Supernatural, DJ Muggs with Ill Bill, Big Sean, Yelawolf and DJ Rocky Rock. The tour will hit four cities, kicking off on August 21 at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California, then hitting Shoreline Amphitheater outside San Francisco on August 22, Governors Island in New York on August 28 and Merriweather Post Pavilion near Washington D.C. on August 29. “This time of year is always filled with anxiety, excitement, and even relief,” said Bells founder Chang Weisberg. “Rock the Bells fans have the craziest expectations, and the days and nights leading up to our initial announcement are surreal. Ultimately, our goal is to always present something that is historic. This year’s show is the epitome of that tradition. Some things new and fresh, some things classic and legendary, and something that you’ve never seen or may never see and hear again. That’s the formula. I am excited for this year’s festivals and hope everyone is as hyped up as I am.” A portion of the proceeds from the four shows will go to Haiti relief efforts through the Hip-Hop and Hope for Haiti organization.
