And that’s definitely the position New Jersey “American Idol” auditioner Pia Toscano is coming from. After wowing America last week and earning a spot in the finals, Toscano spoke to MTV News at Thursday night’s post-elimination bash about her plans for putting together a successful run on the show. “I definitely want to have those big ballads. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always taken to those huge voices: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. So I definitely want to bring that back,” she said of her plan to stick to the strategy that got her where she is now. “But I also want to have those fun dance hits as well.” After flying mostly under the radar so far this season, the raven-haired singer made headlines Wednesday when she performed a stunning cover of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You,” which stole the thunder of the rest of the female competitors that night and locked in her place in the top 13. Toscano, 21, was stunned by the reaction from the audience and the judges following her performance. Holding her hands in front of her mouth as Randy Jackson reminded her of the standing ovation she had just received, she seemed floored when he told her that her performance immediately ranked among the best performances in the show’s history. “That was unbelievable,” Jackson told her. “That’s how you do it!” Steven Tyler, after invoking one of his nonsensical Tyler-isms (“You know, after Monday and Tuesday, even a week says WTF” — WTF??), agreed with Jackson’s assertion that she was “unbelievable,” adding as well that it was “gorgeous.” Jennifer Lopez kicked the praise up a notch, calling the performance “out of this world.” “You were saving that for when it counts!” she teased Toscano. Talk about saving your best for last. Toscano said that after not getting much screen time during the early rounds of the show, she was glad that she peaked before the final cut-down. “I felt like I never really showed all that I could do on the show, and I’m so happy that I did save it for when it counted,” she said. “I’ve grown so much as a person and as a vocalist throughout this competition, and I’m so happy that that was my moment to shine.” Toscano will have to prove that she’s more than a one-trick pony Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performance and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week. By James Montgomery The Foo Fighters Photo: Steve Gullick Over the years, Dave Grohl has directed a handful of Foo Fighters videos — “My Hero,” “Monkey Wrench,” “All My Life” — and these generally fall under the category of “the ones where the bandmembers don’t wear funny disguises.” In fact, if there’s a unifying theme to his work, it’s probably that. But if you dig a bit deeper, you start to notice another similarity between Grohl’s videos: They’re all, on some level at least, performance clips. They’re artfully done, of course, but still feature the band doing what they do best: rocking hard. So, when it came time to direct the Foo Fighters’ brand-new video for “Rope” — which makes its world premiere Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV — Grohl didn’t stray far from his tried-and-true formula. “I’ve made a couple Foo Fighters videos, and it’s easy for me to come up with a treatment or direct the band because I know what we’re like, and I know what we look like when we play. So most of the Foo Fighters videos that I’ve done have at least a little bit of performance in them,” he told MTV News. “Some of them are entirely performance-based, like the new one. The video for ‘Rope’ was meant to really just look like the band performing the song in a really tight, claustrophobic space, not unlike our rehearsal space. I think practicing in this little rehearsal space that we have really influenced that idea, and we actually set up just as we do in rehearsal for the video.” Of course, as “Rope” proves, even the simplest of concepts can pack a wallop. As Grohl said, there’s a creeping claustrophobia to the new video, a rapidly ratcheting sense that the walls are closing in … a feeling that’s echoed on the band’s upcoming Wasting Light album . This not only adds another level to the clip, but makes it a worthy addition to Grohl’s ever-growing, exceedingly hairy body of work, too. “I’d say my body of work is thin in places, and some places don’t have hair where there should be, and other places there’s, like, lots of hair. But it’s pretty nice,” he laughed. “It’ll get big, it’ll get smaller, it just depends. But I’m very proud of my body of work. Let’s just say it’s waxed.” The Foo Fighters’ ‘Rope’ video premieres live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday on MTV and MTV.com, followed by an exclusive Q&A session from one lucky Foo fan’s house to be live-streamed on MTV.com. Is it just me or is Miley Cyrus aging extremely quickly right before our eyes? This is not the face of a hot young popstar in the prime of her life, this is the bloated face of an alcoholic soccer mom with a craving for chili cheese fries. What the hell? I had a feeling her head was too big for her body, but I just thought that was because she was really skinny. If her body ever grows in to this oversized face, we’re in big trouble. She’d better enjoy wearing those leather short shorts while she still can, because at Miley’s rate of expansion those things won’t last very long. Hopefully this is just a bad camera angle and everything will be back to normal soon. Fingers crossed.

So sad: An autopsy has confirmed police suspicions that the body recovered from the Mississippi River Tuesday is in fact, Brian Reed, the 29-year-old brother of Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed. Brian Reed was last seen jumping into the river about 30 miles northwest of New Orleans after an encounter with a sheriff’s deputy on Jan. 7. Authorities had tentatively identified the body on Wednesday, but were waiting to receive official confirmation from the Jefferson Parish coroner’s office, which concluded that the preliminary cause of death appeared to be accidental drowning. According to Reed’s mother, Brian Reed battled drug and alcohol problems and was suspected of stealing his younger brother’s car when he leaped into the river, reports The Washington Post. “That’s the unanswered questions that we have to go through,” Ed Reed said during a press conference. “That’s something that we have to live with, not knowing what happened that day.” “It’s been tough, but God is good and to have found our brother today brings closure in knowing he’s in a better place,” Reed said. “…Good will come up out of it. Hopefully another kid won’t go down the same road.” Funeral services are set for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mount. Zion Baptist Church in St. Rose, Louisiana. Source
