James Durbin Doesn’t Think He ‘Failed’ On ‘American Idol’

‘I’m still clicking up the track,’ latest castoff says of his post-‘Idol’ career. By Gil Kaufman James Durbin is eliminated on Thursday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX James Durbin had a weird feeling when he got to the “American Idol” studios on Thursday. “Something was off with the kinetic energy,” he said Friday (May 13) during a call with reporters. “I felt it in people’s body language. … There was a real somber feeling.” Asked if he was blindsided, then, by the news that he would be going home in fourth place on the show later that night, Durbin paused and said, “I’m not going to lie, I definitely was.” He said he “freaked out” a bit just before the show went on air and had a feeling that his ride might be over. With less than an hour of sleep since his surprise ouster, Durbin said the hours since his elimination had been a “whirlwind” of emotion. “I’ve been really thinking about why I came on this show and why I even auditioned in the first place,” he said. “It’s for my family and to try and give a voice to a genre of music that seems like it’s slowly fading away. I really accomplished a lot on the show, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.” While other fourth-place finishers, including rocker Chris Daughtry , have said not winning “Idol” was probably the best thing that ever happened to them, Durbin said he understood that sentiment, but “winning would have been just great too.” He said his first instinct when host Ryan Seacrest broke the news was to think about how badly he’d wanted to win and fight back the feeling that somehow he’d failed. But after some time to reflect, Durbin said he’d come around on that thought. “I haven’t failed at all,” he said, adding a refrain often heard from “Idol” finalists. “This is just the beginning.” The singer, who provided one of the most emotionally engaging moments of the season with his tearful farewell, compared the journey on “Idol” to a roller coaster, saying it has loops and corkscrews and that while some people think of elimination as the first step toward the crazy ride down the other side of the fame hill, he sees it differently. “I’m still clicking up the track,” he said of his wild ride yet to come. “I’m really, really stoked.” While some of his castmates have hooked up with movie starlets , Durbin said one of the biggest celebrity perks he enjoyed on “Idol” was becoming close to professional wrestler and “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Chris Jericho , whose show is filmed at the same studio as “Idol.” For the lifelong wrestling fan, who always idolized Jericho, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And given that Jericho fronts his own metal band, the boys bonded over body slams, life on the road and all things hard rock. Given the Hollywood-ready arc of his story — from his Asperger’s and Tourette’s syndrome to the death of his musician father from a drug overdose when James was 9 years old — someone asked who the singer might like to see portray him in a movie. At first, he was speechless and then said he might want to do the honors himself. But then he suggested Matt Damon, since some people have said he resembles the actor, and maybe Steven Seagal for his older incarnation, since he used to rock a Seagal-like ponytail back in the day. Durbin has lots of plans for his debut album. He’d like to work with Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, reunite with guitar legend Zakk Wylde and bring out his “secret weapon,” his best friend from home who is a shredding guitar player. As he’s said before, James wants to bring back the classic metal sound, starting with an iconic singer/guitarist pairing along the lines of Wylde and Ozzy Osbourne or Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. And given the chance, he’d like to re-create the sound of his favorite record, the 1983 debut from late Black Sabbath metal screamer and solo star Ronnie James Dio, Holy Diver. He wouldn’t give any details, but Durbin said he heard the song that might be his first single Thursday. “I really dig it,” he said of the unnamed tune. “It’s something I can really work.” He described it as having a heavy edge, but also being radio-friendly enough to get airplay. With no regrets, Durbin did point out his one potential misstep on the show when asked why his number might have been called Thursday. Referring again to his friendship with wrestler Jericho, he noted that the last song Jericho danced to on “Stars” was, yes, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” ” ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ eliminated James Durbin, Chris Jericho and Tony Soprano,” he said with a laugh. Demi Moore’s Hard Nipple of the Day

I’m convinced Demi Moore is walking around with such a hard fake, million dollars of plastic surgery nipple to distract from her Shitty Uterus and it’s ability to vaginally fart out some of the ugliest creatures I’ve ever seen….who for some reason feel entitled to become famous or in the lime light by moving the LA at their own will….setting themselves up to be made fun of for being so weird looking… Or maybe she’s just doing it cuz she wants the boys to notice her, cuz anyone who puts a million dollars into modifying themselves like a japanese import car, obviously wants guys jerking off to her… Either way, whatever the motivation is, she’s doing it….

Michelle Bella: Dr. Conrad Murray "Sounded Tired" the Morning Michael Jackson Died

Dr. Conrad Murray “sounded tired and he was like I’m gonna get some sleep whatever” just a few hours before Michael Jackson died, a stripper says. Michelle Bella, one of three women Murray was juggling at the time, met MJ’s personal doc at the Spearmint Rhino gentleman’s club in Vegas in ’08. Bella told detectives that on June 25, 2009, Dr. Murray left a message on her phone at about 8:30 a.m. It sounds like the physician was just beat. Bella told cops Murray had mentioned Jackson to her before and said: “I mean his schedule was obviously, you know … I know that he was like up all hours because of his work so when – so when he called, you know, he sounded tired and he was like I’m gonna get some sleep or whatever.” A long-held theory among law enforcement is that Dr. Murray may have actually fallen asleep during the time the drug [Propofol] was administered to MJ and may have awakened to find Jackson already dead from heart failure. It may make his claim that Michael Jackson killed himself even more dubious. On an unrelated note, you gotta read how Conrad met Michelle: Bella told cops about the magic moment when she met Murray at Spearment Rhino: “He came in there with his scrubs and he was there with like a client of his.” Bella, then studying to be a chiropractic assistant, says, “We were just sharing some like, you know, medical knowledge and I know he was intrigued with me.” Murray must have been intensely impressed with her medical knowledge. She “sat with him for about roughly like an hour and a half and he paid me $1,000.” So heartwarming.

Brooke Mueller: Back in Rehab, But Refusing Drug Test Until Charlie Sheen Takes One Too

Brooke Mueller has gone back to rehab, according to reports. The socialite refused her drug test Friday, one that she was required to take as part of her custody settlement with ex-husband Charlie Sheen. This followed a week in which she allegedly went off the rails. There’s no hard proof of her binging on drugs, but that pawn shop sighting is sketchy to say the least, and Sheen’s lawyers are going to court on Tuesday to raise the issue. Sources say Brooke’s return to rehab is a preemptive strike . A source close to Mueller tells E! News somewhat vaguely that: “Brooke is doing fine, she is continuing with the rehab program she has always done.” That doesn’t mean all is well with her and ex-hubby Sheen, either: “Brooke will not take a drug test until Charlie takes a drug test,” the source said . “Brooke will [comply with the deal] until he stops talking about her in public. He’s been violating their agreement from day one and she’s had enough.” As for how poor little Bob and Max are dealing with all this? Decrying recent reports and rumors about Mueller, the source says that “Brooke has been home taking care of the kids and the boys are doing great.” “They are with their mom, aunt, uncle and most of the time they are also with their grandparents. They’re living a very stable life and are very happy.” That’s good at least. We advocate as much grandparent time as possible. When Sheen was asked if he was aware of Mueller’s pawn shop incident, he said in a recent interview to E! News, “Yeah I know,” he declared. “She knows the rules. And the consequences are radical. And I told her don’t pick a f–king fight with a warlock because you’re going to lose.” Sheen is ponying up over $55,000 a month to Mueller in child support, so as wild as HE is, you can see why he’s probably fired up over this. Brooke Mueller Will NOT Take a Drug Test!

The troubled Brooke Mueller just refused to submit to a court-ordered drug test. Anytime “refused” and “court-ordered” are in the same sentence? Not good. Sources say Brooke has fallen off the wagon lately, culminating when she was spotted at a pawn shop Friday trying to hawk a watch and a stereo. That would be sad enough, but under her custody settlement agreement with Charlie Sheen, Brooke Mueller is required to submit to drug testing. Brooke in more sober times. Well, presumably . A test was scheduled for 6 p.m. yesterday. The people came to her home with the test, but her lawyer, Ron Rale, told them she wasn’t taking it. It’s unclear if Brooke was present at the time, or if she is still MIA. But either way, under the settlement, a refusal is considered a dirty test. It’s also unclear what Charlie and his lawyer will do now. But he’s already warned her that you don’t mess with a Warlock and expect to win. The plan for Charlie, according to sources close to the situation, is to ask the court for the temporary custody of the boys if Mueller goes to rehab. He’s concerned for Brooke, but his first priority is the boys’ safety. Can you imagine Charlie Sheen as the SAFER of two options? Actually possible! Stay tuned to the second craziest celebrity news story of the weekend (the fight that got Nicolas Cage arrested takes the cake) as it unfolds …

Steven Tyler To Release Tell-All Autobiography In May

‘Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?’ is Aerosmith frontman/’Idol’ judge’s second memoir. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Some rock-and-roll lives are so epic that they require more than one official telling. That’s clearly the case with colorful Aerosmith frontman and “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler , who is preparing to release his second memoir, “Does the Noise in My Head Bother You,” on May 3. According to the book’s publisher, HarperCollins, the long-in-the-works book promises to share “the unbridled truth, the in-your-face, up-close and prodigious tale of Steven Tyler straight from the horse’s lips … All the unexpurgated, brain-jangling tales of debauchery, sex & drugs, transcendence & chemical dependence you will ever want to hear.” Tyler (born Steven Victor Tallarico), 63, wrote about his wild life in 1997’s Aerosmith autobiography “Walk This Way,” but with his higher profile on “Idol,” now seems like the time to let his younger fans get a window into his 40-plus years of rock-and-roll high life. “I’ve been mythicized, Mick-icized, eulogized and fooligized, I’ve been Cole-Portered and farmer’s-daughtered, I’ve been Led Zepped and 12-stepped,” Tyler explains in promotional materials in his classic hoodoo jive talk about his colorful past. “I’m a rhyming fool and so cool that me, Fritz the Cat, and Mohair Sam are the baddest cats that am. I have so many outrageous stories, too many, and I’m gonna tell ’em all.” He’s added plenty of new drama since the last book, including a very public feud with his longtime bandmates , an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a few stage falls, a relapse, a split with his second wife and the death of his first wife, a battle with hepatitis C and throat surgery, and a triumphant return to the spotlight on “Idol.” It was unknown at press time, though, if the book will contain much material on his “Idol” gig. “Tyler tells what it’s like to be a living legend and the frontman of one of the world’s most revered and infamous bands — the debauchery, the money, the notoriety, the fights, the motels and hotels, the elevators, limos, buses and jets, the rehab,” reads the book description. “He reveals the spiritual side that ‘gets lost behind the stereotype of the Sex Guy, the Drug Guy, the Demon of Screamin’, the Terror of the Tropicana.’ And he talks about his epic romantic life and his relationship with his four children.” Are you excited for Steven Tyler’s book? Mindless Behavior Call Meeting Janet Jackson ‘Heaven’

Roc Royal, Ray Ray, Princeton and Prodigy open Number Ones Tour. By Vaughn Schoonmaker Mindless Behavior Photo: Johnny Nunez/ Getty Images In the age of Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Willow Smith and the cast of “Glee,” teen group sensations have slid off the radar after the boy band and girl group hurricane of the late ’90s and early 2000s. Mindless Behavior are here to change that. Filling the hot slot of Janet Jackson’s opening act, Mindless Behavior are currently traveling the country for her Number Ones Tour. MTV News caught up with Roc Royal, Ray Ray, Princeton and Prodigy in their dressing room at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City to find out what it means to be “mindless,” what it’s like opening for Janet and what we can expect from the 13-year-olds as they strive to headline their own tour someday soon. “Two years ago, we all auditioned for the group,” Princeton explained from behind his large designer sunglasses. “Our managers took us to Interscope, and they signed us to Streamline Records. And then, after that, we started working on our album, #1 Girl .” Mindless Behavior’s yet-to-be-released debut album will include featured artists Ciara, Lil Twist and Tyga. Regarding the band’s name, Princeton explained, “Mindless Behavior is our movement that we want everybody to join.” “Being mindless is having confidence and being yourself,” Ray Ray added. The boys intend for their album to find mass appeal. “Our music is very R&B and pop,” Princeton described. “When you listen to our first album … there are a lot of songs that adults and kids can relate to.” As far as subject matter, Ray Ray noted, “All of our songs talk about girls. We love the ladies.” With inspirations including Diddy, Eminem, Michael Jackson, Kanye West and Usher, the boys of Mindless Behavior bring wild synchronized dance moves, some high notes and some serious rapping to the stage. “When our manager told us that we were going to be on tour with Janet Jackson, we couldn’t believe it!” Ray Ray gushed. “The first time I met Janet, I was stuck. I couldn’t move.” Princeton recounted, “I kept telling them, ‘Is it just me, or is the room warm?’ I think it was just me because I was so nervous.” “When we walked in her room, it felt like we were in heaven,” Roc Royal remembered. Prodigy was tickled by the experience: “She’s really relaxed and quiet, and she looks gorgeous.” Janet even offered the young hip-hop artists a bit of advice: “She said to keep doing what we do and we’re very talented,” Princeton said, beaming. “Coming from Janet, that was big.” The boys said they have felt very welcome on Janet’s stage thus far on the tour. “Janet fans are amazing!” Roc Royal said. “There’s not one person in the crowd that’s sitting down or looking away or texting or doing something else,” Princeton added. “They’re always looking at us.” The fact that Janet was the headliner didn’t stop dozens of Mindless fans from waiting outside of Radio City on the three nights of performances, screaming toward all windows in sight with the hope that the boys were in one of them. “Every time we’re in New York, they’re outside waiting,” Princeton said, gesturing toward the nearby open window through which screams repeatedly traveled. “They inspire us to do better onstage,” Roc Royal noted. “And they like to give us gifts!” Ray Ray said, referring to the mountains of merchandise from the M&M Store piled around the dressing room. The boys of Mindless Behavior hope to treat their fans with a full headlining tour of their own sometime soon. “When we headline our first tour, it’s going to be something that people have not seen before,” Princeton promised. “It’s going to be something that the fans love,” added Prodigy. Roc Royal exclaimed: “Everything’s going to be mindless!” Are you a Mindless Behavior fan? Let us know in the comments below! Related Videos Opening Act: Artists To Look Out For

Project Blue Book Open Up About Their Miami Invasion

DJ Aero and Porter Robinson tell MTV News how Project Blue Book became one of dance music’s hottest tickets. By Adam Stewart Porter Robinson, DJ Aero and Tommy Lee When we talk about Project Blue Book , we’re not talking about the alleged top-secret government program said to be covering up things like Area 51 and little green men in Roswell, New Mexico. We’re talking about the hot music collective that’s been turning heads and making waves since their tour first launched back in February. But for Skrillex, Tommy Lee, DJ Aero, and up-and-coming beat-whiz Porter Robinson, the extraterrestrial connotation is apt too. The show these guys put on is totally out of this world. “It came together because we really needed a tour name to make this all work,” DJ Aero explained to MTV News. “We were going back and forth with [Skrillex] coming up with crazy names, and then he sent us an email with the history behind [the government’s Project Blue Book], and we were like, ‘Yeah, that sounds like us!’ ” “We were going to call it Meowington’s Tour!” Aero joked, referring to their pal deadmau5’s (a.k.a Joel Zimmerman) cat. “But we couldn’t put it together legally. [Joel] just wouldn’t give up the name.” “That would also be kind of tragic in light of recent events,” Porter added, making a jab about the injury deadmau5’s now-famous cat recently sustained. All kidding aside, though, as anyone who’s heard their music or been to their shows can attest, the group’s name fits their game. The Project Blue Book Tour has become nothing short of an invasion. After a successful U.S. trek during the winter months, the guys hit this year’s Miami Music Week with some spanking-new material. “We have five different tracks we’ve been playing out, especially for this Ultra Music Week,” Aero told us last month in Miami. “There’s a track named ‘Static’ and a track named ‘LFO Tool’ that we’ve been playing out every night.” Yes, you read that correctly, Tommy Lee and DJ Aero named a track after the audio plug-in tool developed by music mastermind (and longtime deadmau5 and Tommy Lee producer) Steve Duda. “I’ve been playing out two dubstep songs, one is called ‘The State,’ which is some libertarian bitchiness from me, and the other is called ‘Spit Fire.’ They’re just very high-energy, super aggressive dubstep songs,” Porter explained. “I’m also working this weird 100-beats-per-minute banger, which is very unusual. I don’t know many songs that are 100 beats per minute,” he continued. “It’s like slightly faster drumstep, and like slightly slower Justice music. It’s unique.” The trio of Tommy Lee, Porter and Aero, joined by Skrillex (with his infectious sound and obsessive following), have morphed into the one of the “it” acts to catch in 2011. But to paraphrase the old saying, behind all great men, is a great woman. In this case it’s Sofi Toufa , who tours and performs with the gang and has been making waves with her new Moguai collaboration on “Beat of the Drum.” So what’s it like for a girl in possession of one of the hottest voices in dance music to be on tour with all the boys? “Oh, ya know, it’s a little sweaty and smelly and stuff! No, it’s awesome. It’s fun, they’re awesome dudes!” Sofi gushed to MTV News about her Project Blue Book crew. “All these guys shower, which is awesome, so I’m really really happy about that!” “I’ve gotten told on more than one occasion that I smell good from Sofi,” Aero chimed in. “So I feel pretty good about it!” “I’ve gotten that too!” Porter added with a laugh. “It’s very practical; we hired her to get us cocky before our sets!” Unfortunately for Porter, he’ll have to find another morale booster as he says goodbye to Sofi, Tommy and Aero and hits the road with Skrillex and Zedd for the month long, 25-city OWSLA Tour, kicking off June 17 in Las Vegas.
