Is James Franco Joining The ‘Twilight’ Cast?

Actor shows up for Esquire interview holding Stephenie Meyer book, saying, ‘It’s for a project.’ By Eric Ditzian James Franco Photo: Getty Images What’s fun about James Franco is that you never know what to expect from him. He might pop up in some self-deprecating Funny or Die videos, or play a pillow-obsessed weirdo on “30 Rock,” or appear as a serial killer on “General Hospital.” Heck, the guy is starring in the latest reworking of the “Planet of the Apes” franchise . He keeps you guessing. So what are we to make of this new Esquire interview, in which Franco hints he’s getting involved with “Twilight”? When the interviewer first meets the 32-year-old actor, he’s cradling a paperback that he reluctantly admits is the first volume in Stephenie Meyer’s vampire series, saying, “It’s for a project.” Does that mean he could be joining the cast of “Breaking Dawn,” which is set to begin filming in the fall? Or is this mysterious project just about vampires or teenage drama? A rep for Franco did not return MTV News’ request for comment by press time. All we can say for certain, at this point, is that Franco is a fan of the book. “It’s crazy how much sexual tension there is,” he said. “It just builds and builds. I mean it never stops. It’s sort of explosive by the end. Crazy. Like they’ll blow up with it. And of course, they don’t. Which is the point too, I guess.” Franco did say that the project was “way, way off” and only “something I’m thinking about,” so Twi-hards should proceed with their Franco dreams with caution. Whether or not he joins the “Twilight” cast, it’s funny to note that his brother, Dave, actually auditioned for the role of Edward Cullen. And he’s not sorry he lost out on the part to Robert Pattinson. “I don’t want that kind of fame,” the younger Franco said. “Hell no. I don’t like the idea of losing my anonymity and not having a personal life.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

‘The Other Guys’ Captures Audiences At Weekend Box Office

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s new comedy took first place from Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception.’ By Josh Wigler Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in “The Other Guys” Photo: Sony Pictures The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Other Guys” ($35.6 million) #2 “Inception” ($18.6 million) #3 “Step Up 3-D” ($15.5 million) #4 “Salt” ($11.1 million) #5 “Dinner for Schmucks” ($10.5 million) The dream is over, as Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” is no longer the reigning champion at the weekend domestic box office — that distinction now belongs to “The Other Guys.” Starring an A-List crew of comedians and action stars including Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “The Other Guys” easily took first place in its first weekend in theaters with a $35.6 million debut, marking yet another successful endeavor from frequent collaborators Ferrell and director Adam McKay. Additionally, the strong debut for “The Other Guys” demonstrates that both Ferrell and Wahlberg still have major box-office appeal, a notion that was somewhat questionable after the disappointing performances of Ferrell’s most recent “Land of the Lost” and Wahlberg’s “Max Payne.” Despite slipping from the top spot for the first time since its debut, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring “Inception” remained a strong contender at the box office this weekend, settling for second place with $18.6 million. The high-concept action flick has amassed $227.7 million at the domestic box office since opening four weeks ago. “Step Up 3D” entered the weekend competition with plenty of fanfare but only danced up an estimated $15.5 million bronze medal by Sunday’s end. It’s the weakest debut for any of the “Step Up” films to date, but not by too large of a margin. Fourth and fifth place belonged to the Angelina Jolie-starring “Salt” and comedy flick “Dinner for Schmucks” with $11.1 million and $10.5 million, respectively. Upcoming Releases Rock music, romance and video game references collide when comic book adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” arrives in theaters next weekend alongside Sylvester Stallone’s action extravaganza, “The Expendables.” The two geek-baiting films debut against the considerably less violent “Eat Pray Love,” starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. Jackson Rathbone Addresses ‘Last Airbender’ Critics: ‘Art Is Subjective’

‘The critics in the U.S. … I just don’t think they really like M. Night Shyamalan anymore,’ ‘Twilight’ actor says. By Amy Wilkinson Jackson Rathbone at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards Photo: Mark Sullivan/ WireImage/ Getty Images Though it performed respectably at the box office, grossing nearly $130 million since its July 1 release date, M. Night Shyamalan’s fantasy flick “The Last Airbender” received an icy reception from critics — a reaction that star Jackson Rathbone says is undeserved. “The critics in the U.S. … I just don’t think they really like M. Night Shyamalan anymore,” Rathbone told MTV News while on the blue carpet for the 2010 Teen Choice Awards . “I don’t know why. It’s sad because he’s such an amazing director and an amazing person.”

Why ‘Breaking Dawn, Part 2’ Is Set For Fall 2012, Not Summer

Summit, film analysts refute rumors that release date was based on ‘Eclipse’ box-office performance. By Eric Ditzian Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Last month, as “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” got off to a stellar (if not record-breaking) start at the box office, MTV News squashed the widely held assumption that the second part of “Breaking Dawn” would definitely arrive in the summer of 2012. As Summit Entertainment exec Richie Fay told us, the studio was exploring multiple dates in mid- to late 2012, not just possible openings that would fall when school’s out of session. Now, Summit has officially announced that “Breaking Dawn, Part 2” will open November 2012 , and with that, another assumption seems to be taking hold among fans and on the Web: After “Eclipse” failed to wildly out-gross “New Moon” at the box office, Summit got spooked about a summer release date and fled to more familiar autumn territory. But based on our conversations with Summit and box-office analysts, that’s simply not the case. First off, it’s important to note that despite all this talk about a weaker-than-expected performance for “Eclipse,” its $289 million haul will eventually surpass the $297 million that “New Moon” pulled in last fall, according to Box Office Mojo . When you consider that sequels like “Shrek Forever After” and “Sex and the City 2” underperformed in the crowded summer-movie season, Summit has to be extremely pleased with the box-office business of “Eclipse.” So if it’s not a fear of summer that persuaded Summit to deliver both “Breaking Dawn” films in the fall, then what was it? A careful examination of the 2012 summer calendar. “The lesson is that it’s all about positioning a film at a time when it will face as little direct competition as possible,” explained Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com . “Summit was wise to stay away from summer 2012, because it’s shaping up to be a record-breaking season.” “The Avengers,” “Madagascar 3” and “Men in Black 3” are all set to drop that May, followed by “Star Trek 2” in June, and then new installments of “Spider-Man” (which already occupies the Fourth of July slot held this year by “Eclipse”), “Ice Age” and “Batman.” “Why compete with an amazing slate like that if you don’t have to?” Contrino added. “I’m sure ‘Breaking Dawn, Part 2’ would still open very well during a summer that crowded, but its audience would be devoured very quickly.” The point, then, is not that summer is a poor time to release a “Twilight” film but that fall simply presents less competition, which is not to say that there will be no box-office battle in autumn. “Breaking Dawn, Part 1” is set to open against “Happy Feet 2” on November 18, 2011, while the second in the two-part finale will compete with “Monsters Inc. 2” on November 16, 2012. But when you consider the more jam-packed summer season and the fact that an entire year will have passed between “Twilight” flicks — as opposed to the eight months between “New Moon” and “Eclipse” — the fall 2012 release date makes perfect sense. “There’s a mood and spirit to these movies that make them play really well in the fall. They’re darker, they’re more emotional than standard summer fare, and thematically, fall is a great fit,” said John Singh, a box-office analyst for Flixster . “It also allows the audience to build even greater anticipation — rather than seeing the follow-up just a few months later. This gives them a full year to anticipate the final film in a series that has generated hugely positive response from its fanbase.” How do you feel about the two “Breaking Dawn” films opening a year apart? Bristol Palin Confirms: I Dumped Levi Johnston!

“It’s over. I broke up with him.” – Bristol Palin on Levi Johnston After shocking most observers, her own family included, by getting back together with the father of her 19-month-old son, the daughter of former GOP V.P. candidate Sarah Palin confirms that she’s broken it off with the dude again. They are now 0-for-2 at the whole engagement thing. Bristol Palin says that the relationship soured on July 14, the very same day they announced their marriage intentions to the world via Us Weekly . As luck would have it, that was the day she learned: That he might have fathered a baby with Lanesia Garcia (he didn’t) That Levi may also have been putting it to Briana Plum (unclear) BRIEFLY HAPPY TIMES : Failed engagements of 2010 and 2008, respectively . In any case, Palin tearfully told People about feeling heartbroken, humiliated and trapped while Levi acted cool . “There was no remorse,” she says. “The final straw was him flying to Hollywood for what he told me was to see some hunting show but come to find out it was that music video mocking my family,” she says. “He’s just obsessed with the limelight and I got played.” That will do it every time. Bristol Palin has already moved back into her parents’ home in Alaska. For her part, Sarah Palin said in a statement: “I wish for Bristol to be able to move forward in life with her same forgiving, gracious, optimistic spirit, but from henceforth she’ll know to trust but verify. Bristol is strong, she is independent, and she knows what is right for her son.” Bristol says she’s not giving up hope of two-parent home for Tripp … but this is most likely the last chance she’ll give that jackass Levi. “I have faith that I’ll find it. I know I need a man who’s going to be completely honest with me, someone who loves me and Tripp and wants to be with him all the time. I also want someone who has religious beliefs and a good family.” Ouch, that’s gotta hurt if you’re the son of a drug dealer. Levi may still be in denial over the whole thing, according to reports. TMZ claims Levi thinks the whole thing is nothing but a big “misunderstanding.” According to Levi’s manager, Tank Jones, Bristol doesn’t have her story straight and Levi believes that the two simply broke up over “misinformation.” Jones says Levi is definitely not the father of an illegitimate baby (well, a second one) and that he did not shoot a music video “mocking” the Palins. As for their 19-month-old son Tripp, Tank says that Levi Johnston will continue to co-parent with Bristol and “take care” of his financial obligations. Tank also notes that Levi is “not happy” about the split

REVIEW: Nicolas Cage’s Magic Can’t Save Sorcerer’s Apprentice

To be a sorcerer, at least in the terms outlined in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, you’ve got to engage most of your brain, not the measly 10 percent most of us poor average Joes use. You also have to be able to harness electricity so you can mold fiery snowballs of energy with your hands and fling them at bad people. And pointy-toed leather shoes are not optional: Rubber-soled sneakers block the flow of energy. “Plus,” as Nicolas Cage’s sorcerer guru Balthazar tells his young student Dave (Jay Baruchel), “it helps to look classy.”

‘Breaking Dawn’ In 3-D Will Be ‘A Creative Decision’

‘A big factor is the perception of our audience,’ Summit’s Richard Fay tells MTV News of adopting the technology. By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner Photo: Han Myung-Gu/ WireImage Summit Entertainment understands the importance of 3-D. Still, there continues to be rampant speculation about whether “Breaking Dawn,” will open as a 3-D release when the first of a two-part finale arrives in theaters next year. But now, another movie on the studio’s lineup may provide some clues about where Summit will take the “Twilight Saga.” “They’re completely fascinated and intrigued by the technology,” said director Patrick Lussier, who recently wrapped production on Summit’s 3-D action flick “Drive Angry.” “I think Summit has been discovering, as they’ve been seeing the 3-D material and the ease we’ve been able to work with it, is that it’s an incredibly viable format to work in.” So will Summit’s “Drive Angry” experience — the movie was shot using 3-D cameras rather than converted in post-production — combined with the fate of “Eclipse” at the box office , convince them to deliver their biggest 2011 release in three dimensions? “That decision has yet to be made,” Summit distribution head Richard Fay told MTV News. “It’s still the source of a discussion.” While those talks inevitably touch on technological hurdles and monetary interest — owing to the premium-ticket prices that 3-D flicks command — Fay emphasized that the studio is more focused on creative concerns. “There’s certainly a financial part of the discussion,” he said. “And yes, there’s a certain amount of technology that has to be considered and accounted for. But it really comes down to the creative folks.” “In any of these roundtables conversations, [Summit CEO] Rob Friedman has always been concerned about the ‘Twilight’ patron,” Fay added. “His concern is always the people that come in to see this movie. He doesn’t want to turn them off or offend. That’s why it’s a creative decision. A big factor is the perception of our audience. What are their feelings going to be? If it lends itself to being a better movie because of 3-D, then that’s the technology we’ll use.” What are your thoughts on “Breaking Dawn” in 3-D? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
