Lady Gaga? Britney Spears? Fans Pick Their 2011 Summer Jams

Katy Perry, Pitbull, Chris Brown and Adele also found support from MTV.com readers. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Now that school’s out and folks are slathering on the sunscreen, we figured it was time to take the temperature of the annual Summer Jam Sweepstakes — the race to dominate the airwaves (and your tanning playlist) during the long, hot months of the year. So last week, we published our initial rankings in the race for the Summer Jam crown , a list that was topped by Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” with Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” following close behind. A whole host of other big-name stars — like Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Adele, to name just a few — also made the cut, along with some dark-horse candidates (like Foster the People, Maroon 5 and David Guetta) who are determined to make this competition close. Of course, our rankings had you talking too — in fact, the conversation in our comments section got so huge (we even heard from a Hall of Fame third baseman!) that we’ve decided to spotlight some of the best back-and-forth right now. What’s your pick for the Song of Summer 2011? Here’s what you had to say: “This has been Katy’s decade so far! She made pop music fun again.” — Tuffy Luvvy ” ‘Lighters’ by Eminem, Royce and Bruno Mars all the way, baby! It’s a long-shot, I know. I think Katy Perry will get it, but you never know.” — lilbittaflava “I like Katy, but ‘I Wanna Go’ from Britney sounds more like a summer song.” — Aaron “Britney Spears! ‘I Wanna Go’ just makes my summer great!” — Melissa Goulart “Britney Spears all the way! ‘I Wanna Go’ all the way! I’m still in love with Pitbull’s ‘Give Me Everything,’ and his album is amazing. Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ is sick, love it!” — RyanJaggerz ” ‘The Edge of Glory’ is a glorious pop anthem-masterpiece, no need for it to be crowned as a ‘jam.’ Adele’s ‘Rolling’ is heart-touching, breathtaking and also a masterpiece.” — Spyros Venturis ” ‘Moves Like Jagger’ by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera is amazing!” — SuperZonic Jbsz “Oh I couldn’t believe when I saw them, thank you so much MTV for putting them on the list … I love them, talking about of course FOSTER THE PEOPLE YEAHHHHHHH.” — hotalejandro ” ‘Tonight Tonight’ by Hot Chelle Rae! I could party to that every day of the summer.” — WhatShouldIDo? “You guys forgot about New Boyz ft. Chris Brown, ‘Better With the Lights Off,’ and Lupe Fiasco ft. Trey Songz, ‘Outta My Head.’ ” — booklady “All these songs have that ‘I’ve heard it all before’ sound to them. Nothing special about any of the songs on the list. A lot of the ‘artists’ on this list would be better off working a mop at a Waffle House. It’s Kanye’s fault.” — Mike Schmidt What do you think? Share your Summer Jam picks in the comments below! Britney Spears Tweets Support For Nicki Minaj After Cousin’s Murder

‘Keep up the amazing love and support you guys have for her,’ Spears writes. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images While Nicki Minaj has remained quiet on Twitter since her cousin’s death, her Femme Fatale tourmate Britney Spears sent love and support her way on the social networking site. “Please keep @NickiMinaj & her family in your prayers. … keep up the amazing love and support you guys have for her,” Spears tweeted late Tuesday. Minaj was performing at a show on Monday night in Winnipeg when it was learned that her cousin had been shot and killed in New York. The tour was off Tuesday night and will resume Wednesday in Minnesota. Minaj initially tweeted the news of the murder of her cousin, Nicholas Telemaque , on Monday evening. He was shot in Brooklyn near his home in the early hours of Independence Day, according to police. Police say that the 27-year-old was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso region. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The investigation is ongoing. A relative of Telemaque spoke to Radar Online shortly after the news broke, noting that Minaj is “devastated” over the loss. “He was shot in the chest as he walked towards his car close to his home. Nicki is absolutely devastated, as are all our family — she was very close to her cousin, but now he has gone,” Carol Clarke told the website, adding that she believed he was killed because of “mistaken identity.” “She has reached out to Nicholas’ mom, Victoria, to offer her words of comfort but she is too distraught. Nicholas was a quiet person but he could be the life and soul of the party, too,” Clarke added. “He did not run with gangs or anything like that.” Telemaque had reportedly been seen at C-PAC nightclub earlier that night. “His friends have told us there wasn’t any trouble that night and we believe it could have been a case of mistaken identity, but the police are still investigating the case,” she said. “We are still trying to make arrangements for his funeral, but I will really miss him because he was a good person.” Related Artists Britney Spears Nicki Minaj

Britney Spears’ ‘I Wanna Go’ Director Breaks Down Cheeky Clip

Chris Marrs Piliero explains the video’s ‘Half Baked’ and ‘Terminator’ homages, but what about those elusive seashells? By Kara Warner Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” music video Photo: Jive Britney Spears’ video for “I Wanna Go” — a dream-sequence-y, pop-culture-reference-packed tongue-in-cheek attack on the paparazzi — is so fun, it’s quickly becoming one of our favorites. And because we can’t get enough of it, MTV News sought out the vid’s creative mastermind, director Chris Marrs Piliero (who also directed Ke$ha’s “Blow”), to explain it to us, frame by frame. “This opening scene poked fun at the ridiculous rumors that surround Britney,” Piliero said of the clip’s opening press conference, during which Britney tells off a room of reporters. “That is our homage to ‘Half Baked.’ I was really stoked that we were able to include that little parody homage in the video and that Guillermo Diaz, who is the guy [in the scene] giving the thumbs up, is from the movie.” After strutting out of the press conference and squeezing the butt of an autograph-seeking fan (played by one of her dancers), Spears strolls down the street, passing by a baby in a stroller who whistles at her. “We were actually going to have three babies,” Piliero revealed. “But the other two were just crying and crying. and I was like ‘F— it, get ’em outta there,’ and the one baby, he ruled and was super cute, so we went with him.” Spears’ next saucy move is to flash a bunch of guys on the street: a young boy, his dad, a male driver getting a ticket and the cop writing it. “That little kid was awesome,” Piliero said of the young redheaded boy. “If you look closely, he’s actually squeezing his juice box all over this shirt. The cop is another one of Britney’s dancers. You might recognize him from the ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, he had blue hair.” Next up, Spears encounters a paparazzo on the street and grabs his camera and throws it to the ground. “That was a very genuine performance from Britney,” Piliero said of the scene. “I felt like she was letting out her inner emotion toward paparazzi. It was also really cold. I think she just went for it.” Cut to Spears on top of a taxi, microphone in hand with a long cord, which she uses to take out the various photographers who have surrounded her. “A lot of people think this was inspired by ‘Kill Bill,’ because I’m a huge Quentin Tarantino fan. I would totally own up to that if it was true,” he admitted. “But I actually intended for her to always having her performance with the microphone [throughout the video] for her performance setup, so I thought that was a good way to tie it all together and I didn’t want to give her a real weapon.” But Piliero was making an intentional pop-culture reference with the wording on the movie theater marquee in the background of the scene that reads “Crossroads 2: Cross Harder.” “I’ve always thought that ‘Die Hard 2: Die Harder’ is one of the most ridiculously awesome titles for a sequel ,” he said. “And I needed to put something in the marquee, and I thought it would be a really fun Easter egg for fans.” Now something odd happens with the paparazzi who’ve been hit by Spears’ microphone weapon — they are revealed to be robots or androids. “I love pop culture and this whole video is kind of a dream sequence,” Piliero said. “I think it’s natural to have fantasies and dreams with stuff inspired by pop culture, so that’s why the robot guys kind of have a ‘Terminator’-ish feel.” Before the “Terminator” ‘bots can move in on Spears, Diaz drives up in a sports car and whisks her away, where he celebrates by pouring a carton of milk all over himself. “Guillermo kills it in the scene with the milk, he’s hilarious,” Piliero enthused. “And I love Britney’s reaction there; both her reactions where she’s laughing are so good. A lot of people ask about the milk and what the deal with it is, a lot of people have theories too, I don’t need to say what the point is, because I love hearing what people say, so I’ll leave it at that. Same goes with the seashells too.” Cut to the final scene, where we realize that it was all a dream. Spears is at the press conference, shaken out of a daze when Guillermo steps in and tells the reporters, “No more questions,” then hands Spears a handful of those seashells that Piliero won’t explain. He looks back at the camera at the last moment and we see his eyes are robot red, an obvious nod to Michael Jackson’s zombie-green eyes in the last shot of “Thriller.” ” ‘Thriller is one of my favorite music videos ever,” Piliero said. “I remember watching it when I was five, that was what inspired me to become a music video director so I wanted to pay homage to it.” What do you think the milk and the seashells signify in “I Wanna Go”? Parental Notification Dominates Testimony At Hearing On Teen Health

More here:

Yesterday, the Legislature’s Program Review and Investigations Committee heard significant testimony on parental notification for minors seeking abortions at its public hearing on teen health. What You Need To Know About New FDA Sunscreen Rules The Family Institute of Connecticut played a key role in arranging this first-ever hearing on parental notification. Sen. Michael McLachlan (R-Danbury) testified about parental notification. He observed that Connecticut legislators want parental notification for teen tanning but not for teen abortions. “Connecticut is fifth in the nation for teen abortions. Connecticut’s teen abortion rate is fifty-five percent higher than the national average,” McLachlan stated. “Parental notification crosses the boundary between pro-life and pro-choice… parental notification is a reasonable expectation of this legislature,” he added. Legislators also heard heart-wrenching testimony from the directors of crisis pregnancy centers, who counsel teens considering abortion on a daily basis. 7 Top Tips To Alleviate Leg Cramps “Parental notification is a common-sense protection for Connecticut’s youth,” stated FIC Executive Director Peter Wolfgang. “Over thirty-six states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania have laws requiring parental involvement in a minor’s decision to have an abortion. If a school nurse can’t administer aspirin to a minor without a parent’s consent, it’s just common sense that the parent should be involved in a child’s decision to undergo a surgical procedure like abortion,” stated Wolfgang. “Currently, Connecticut law deprives teens of the benefit of guardianship when faced with the decision whether to obtain an abortion. It is not a decision that teens should make alone,” he added. “The lack of a parental notification law creates a loophole that is exploited by human traffickers and statutory rapists,” stated Wolfgang. In 2008, a West Hartford man, Adam Gault, was arrested for abducting a 13-year old girl and holding her captive as his sex slave for over a year. In the course of her captivity, Gault impregnated the girl and had her brought to the Planned Parenthood in West Hartford for an abortion. “If Connecticut had a parental notification law, Adam Gault would have been apprehended much sooner,” commented Wolfgang. “Right now, human traffickers and statutory rapists can cover up their crimes by obtaining abortions for their victims. Knowingly or not, Planned Parenthood aids and abets criminals like Adam Gault in covering up their unspeakable offenses,” he added. “Raymond Bechard’s new book, The Berlin Turnpike: A True Story of Human Trafficking in America, has drawn significant attention to the human trafficking of minors in Connecticut. Passing a parental notification law is an important step towards combating this problem and increasing scrutiny on human traffickers,” elaborated Wolfgang. “We also offer a special thanks to Sen. John Kissel (R-Enfield). It was Sen. Kissel who first suggested the idea that led to yesterday’s hearing at FIC’s February 3rd legislative breakfast. It was his good advice that led to FIC’s biggest ever pro-active victory, a public hearing on parental notification,” concluded Wolfgang.
