Chris Marrs Piliero explains the video’s ‘Half Baked’ and ‘Terminator’ homages, but what about those elusive seashells? By Kara Warner Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” music video Photo: Jive Britney Spears’ video for “I Wanna Go” — a dream-sequence-y, pop-culture-reference-packed tongue-in-cheek attack on the paparazzi — is so fun, it’s quickly becoming one of our favorites. And because we can’t get enough of it, MTV News sought out the vid’s creative mastermind, director Chris Marrs Piliero (who also directed Ke$ha’s “Blow”), to explain it to us, frame by frame. “This opening scene poked fun at the ridiculous rumors that surround Britney,” Piliero said of the clip’s opening press conference, during which Britney tells off a room of reporters. “That is our homage to ‘Half Baked.’ I was really stoked that we were able to include that little parody homage in the video and that Guillermo Diaz, who is the guy [in the scene] giving the thumbs up, is from the movie.” After strutting out of the press conference and squeezing the butt of an autograph-seeking fan (played by one of her dancers), Spears strolls down the street, passing by a baby in a stroller who whistles at her. “We were actually going to have three babies,” Piliero revealed. “But the other two were just crying and crying. and I was like ‘F— it, get ’em outta there,’ and the one baby, he ruled and was super cute, so we went with him.” Spears’ next saucy move is to flash a bunch of guys on the street: a young boy, his dad, a male driver getting a ticket and the cop writing it. “That little kid was awesome,” Piliero said of the young redheaded boy. “If you look closely, he’s actually squeezing his juice box all over this shirt. The cop is another one of Britney’s dancers. You might recognize him from the ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, he had blue hair.” Next up, Spears encounters a paparazzo on the street and grabs his camera and throws it to the ground. “That was a very genuine performance from Britney,” Piliero said of the scene. “I felt like she was letting out her inner emotion toward paparazzi. It was also really cold. I think she just went for it.” Cut to Spears on top of a taxi, microphone in hand with a long cord, which she uses to take out the various photographers who have surrounded her. “A lot of people think this was inspired by ‘Kill Bill,’ because I’m a huge Quentin Tarantino fan. I would totally own up to that if it was true,” he admitted. “But I actually intended for her to always having her performance with the microphone [throughout the video] for her performance setup, so I thought that was a good way to tie it all together and I didn’t want to give her a real weapon.” But Piliero was making an intentional pop-culture reference with the wording on the movie theater marquee in the background of the scene that reads “Crossroads 2: Cross Harder.” “I’ve always thought that ‘Die Hard 2: Die Harder’ is one of the most ridiculously awesome titles for a sequel ,” he said. “And I needed to put something in the marquee, and I thought it would be a really fun Easter egg for fans.” Now something odd happens with the paparazzi who’ve been hit by Spears’ microphone weapon — they are revealed to be robots or androids. “I love pop culture and this whole video is kind of a dream sequence,” Piliero said. “I think it’s natural to have fantasies and dreams with stuff inspired by pop culture, so that’s why the robot guys kind of have a ‘Terminator’-ish feel.” Before the “Terminator” ‘bots can move in on Spears, Diaz drives up in a sports car and whisks her away, where he celebrates by pouring a carton of milk all over himself. “Guillermo kills it in the scene with the milk, he’s hilarious,” Piliero enthused. “And I love Britney’s reaction there; both her reactions where she’s laughing are so good. A lot of people ask about the milk and what the deal with it is, a lot of people have theories too, I don’t need to say what the point is, because I love hearing what people say, so I’ll leave it at that. Same goes with the seashells too.” Cut to the final scene, where we realize that it was all a dream. Spears is at the press conference, shaken out of a daze when Guillermo steps in and tells the reporters, “No more questions,” then hands Spears a handful of those seashells that Piliero won’t explain. He looks back at the camera at the last moment and we see his eyes are robot red, an obvious nod to Michael Jackson’s zombie-green eyes in the last shot of “Thriller.” ” ‘Thriller is one of my favorite music videos ever,” Piliero said. “I remember watching it when I was five, that was what inspired me to become a music video director so I wanted to pay homage to it.” What do you think the milk and the seashells signify in “I Wanna Go”? By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Hugh Swingle Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” music video Photo: Jive Britney Spears looks like she’s having a blast in her new “I Wanna Go” video . It’s full of fun pop-culture references and has Brit seeking vengeance against the paparazzi . Now, the director of the kitschy clip, Chris Marrs Piliero, has opened up about working with the pop megastar. “Meeting Britney for the first time was really rad. She was really cool. I don’t think anyone has the right to be a diva, but there are some artists out there, they’ve been in the game long enough [that] if any one of those artists … might have the permission to be a diva, she definitely has earned it — and she wasn’t whatsoever,” he told the MTV Buzzworthy blog . So what’s Spears like? “She’s super polite; she’s ridiculously polite. She’s soft-spoken,” he said. “She’s really cute. The way she talks and interacts, you want to hug her. She was super professional, super game. … It was rad. It was awesome working with her. She’s a rad chick.” Another highlight of the shoot for Piliero was working with “Weeds” star Guillermo Diaz on one of the final scenes. In the last part of the video, Spears and the actor are riding in a convertible in the desert as Brit dances around. Diaz displays his comedic chops by doing things like pouring milk all over himself. “It was definitely a funny moment of the shoot. We let the cameras roll, and the reaction that you see from Britney is definitely a genuine reaction,” the director recalled. “When I was going through the footage, I loved the way that she responded. It’s so genuine and so funny. It’s perfect [and] it definitely is a perfect description of how we all felt about that scene.” Let us know what you think of Britney’s “I Wanna Go” video in the comments! From ‘Crossroads’ to seashells, here’s a look at the references in Britney’s latest video. By James Montgomery Britney Spears in her music video for “I Wanna Go” Photo: Jive Britney Spears’ new “I Wanna Go” video is, like some of her past clips, an all-out affront to the pesky paparazzi that follow her every move. But, unlike any video she’s done previously, this one tackles the issue with tongue firmly planted in cheek. See, “Go” is essentially one long dream sequence — instigated by the rote questions Spears is forced to endure by members of the media — and, as such, it’s packed with pop-culture nods to film and television (and whistling dogs too). And that fact not only makes it pretty funny, but it sets it apart from most of Brit’s other work. And though we’ve done pop-culture cheat sheets for her other videos , rarely have they been as much fun as they were this time out. So, without further ado, alphabetized and cross-referenced for your perusing pleasure, here’s our “I Wanna Go” cheat sheet:
‘It’s awesome,’ the die-hard Brit fan says of getting to record ‘Whiplash’ for her album. By Christina Garibaldi Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News With her album When the Sun Goes Down set to be released on June 28, and her first big-screen movie “Monte Carlo” hitting theaters on July 1, Selena Gomez has been on a whirlwind promotional tour (her recent hospitalization doesn’t seem to have slowed the young starlet one bit). Last week, in the midst of all that, a couple of tracks from her LP hit the Internet, including one co-written by none other than the pop princess herself, Britney Spears. MTV News caught up with the Disney star on Friday and we asked her about “Whiplash,” the uptempo Spears dance tune. Gomez, who is a die-hard Britney fan , said she was excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with one of her idols. “It’s awesome,” Gomez said of the leaked track. “It was an honor and I’m completely stoked.” But when she was initially given “Whiplash,” a track that reportedly failed to make Spears’ Circus album, the “Wizards of Waverly Place” actress was unaware that Spears had helped to write the song. “I just heard the song; I fell in love with it,” Gomez said. “They gave it to me, the producers who worked on it, and I came and sang and saw that she had co-written it, so I was very excited.” Yet the ties to Spears don’t end there for Gomez. Next month, she hits the road for her first headlining summer tour, and she’ll pay homage to the Femme Fatale. “We are working on a few cover songs. We are working on a Britney tribute ,” Gomez told MTV News earlier this year. “I wanna do a mash-up of all her songs and just go for it ‘ … Baby One More Time,’ and then I think we’re going to try to incorporate ‘Toxic’ and that phase. And then we might do some of her recent, new stuff.” Related Artists Selena Gomez Britney Spears
‘The nerves are gone now, and I just want to own it more,’ Nervo’s Liv tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Jeremy Cowart/ WireImage The Femme Fatale Tour kicked off Thursday night to rave reviews, with critics giving Britney Spears props for her over-the-top stage show. The show is all about the ladies, thanks to opening slots from Nervo , Jessie and the Boy Toys, as well as Nicki Minaj, with Spears acting as the show’s head mistress. MTV News caught up with Liv from the DJ act Nervo on Friday (June 17), nearly 24 hours after their first warm-up gig for Ms. Spears. “I’ve got to say, it was a real buzz for us to open the show; that’s the selfish highlight,” she told MTV News. “We were honored to be there. I thought the crowd got our house music.” Liv had the pleasure of finally seeing Spears in concert for the first time and couldn’t help but rave about her. “I thought she was brilliant. It was my first time seeing Nicki, as well, and she was brilliant,” she said. “I love ‘Slave 4 U.’ I was really happy she was playing her oldies.” When fans first heard that Spears and Minaj would be touring together, no one knew how the two would mesh. But, as it turns out, Liv said they work just perfectly. “They’re both very strong women. Britney was the same old Britney we love,” she said. “They complemented each other.” In fact, there’s a real sense of camaraderie on the road. “The nerves are gone now, and I just want to own it more,” she said. “It really does [feel like girl power]. It’s very exciting. We’re all girls. This business is crazy, and it’s fun we can all be in it together. “It really is a machine. We’ve done RV tours before with club DJs, and this is so far and beyond from the RV tours,” she said. “The catering is insane; three-course meals, three times a day. I’ve never seen what it takes to be a part of one of these pop shows, and it takes so much work. It’s full on. It’s great. It’s amazing that she can take it all in stride all these years later.” Will you be checking out Britney’s latest tour? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Britney Spears
