Michael Fassbender Looks Back On ‘Surreal’ 2011

From ‘X-Men: First Class’ to ‘Shame,’ Fassbender is one of the actors MTV News is most thankful for this year. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Fassbender Photo: MTV News Every once in a while, an actor with a breakout role will come along and capture the attention of both moviegoers and the people behind the films. Soon, you can find that same actor headlining films at festivals as well as scoring top billing on blockbusters. For 2011, that actor was undoubtedly Michael Fassbender , who wowed the art-house crowd in 2008 with “Hunger” and found wider audiences the year later with Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” as the British Lieutenant Archie Hicox, who reserves a circle of hell for people who waste good scotch. This past year was when he became a superstar. He helped lead a brand-new team of mutants to box-office success as a young Magneto in “X-Men: First Class,” and then delivered critically praised performances in “Jane Eyre,” “A Dangerous Method” and “Shame,” for which he’s receiving Oscar buzz. That’s why we’ve named Michael Fassbender one of the actors we’re most thankful for this holiday season. We sat down with Fassbender and gave him a chance to look back on 2011 and tell us why a different year — 2007 — meant everything to him. MTV : Every year at MTV, we choose a few actors that we’re most thankful for around Thanksgiving, and you’ve made the cut. Fassbender : Have I really? MTV : You have. Fassbender : Nice one. MTV : Obviously, a couple years back, when “Inglourious” hit, especially, that was a big moment for you, but it feels like this year has to be professionally the most satisfying year. Fassbender : No, I got to say, for me, definitely 2007 changed my life. MTV : “Hunger.” Fassbender : Yeah, Steve McQueen gave me an opportunity, a possibility to show some sort of capability in my profession. It was coming at a point when we were about to go into a recession. That was going to affect this business as much as any business — less jobs for less actors. For him to take a risk on an unknown in a lead role, it changed my life, really. From that, I had all these amazing experiences with Andrea Arnold, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Cary Fukunaga, David Cronenberg, Ridley Scott. MTV : It feels like this is where it all bears fruit. The seeds that were planted then, now it all starts to come out. Fassbender : Yeah, you start off and you just want to be working, so jobbing actors, you’re already thankful for that opportunity. To be in this position that I’m in now, it’s ridiculous. Somebody pull the plug on me now. I have to say I’m blessed. When I started out when I was 17, this was the pinnacle, to be working with people that I find inspiring, I can learn from. It’s a very privileged position. MTV : Was there one particular moment in this year of 2011 that was the most surreal, the biggest high for you? A lot of premieres, a lot of production work, a lot of press. Was there one moment you can pinpoint? Fassbender : Just lots of surreal moments. When I was sitting in a balcony in Venice — I’ve never been to Venice before — and I’m there with family and friends, and we’re like, “Wow, this is a trip, isn’t it?” We’re all sort of experiencing this together. You’re always sort of pinching yourself. Being on a Quentin Tarantino set. When I was 18, I did a stage version of “Reservoir Dogs” with my friends, where I directed, produced, played Mr. Pink. I mean, I was totally green. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing, but I knew that with hard work and enthusiasm, things get done. So then to be sitting on set with him, I was like, “This is weird.” Already at the audition with him was strange, because he reads all the other parts. That was surreal. To have this sort of reception we’ve had for both films in Venice, to be there with two films, all those things are pretty mad. For ‘Breaking Dawn’ Fans, Once Isn’t Enough

‘Twilight’ enthusiasts’ repeat viewings could keep flick box-office king. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Happy “Twilight” Tuesday ! It’s time for another installment in our resurrected series of columns dedicated to all things regarding Edward Cullen, Bella Swan, Jacob Black and the rest. Today’s topic: Just how long will “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1” reign as box-office king? Knowing the serious dedication the “Twilight” fanbase has to the film franchise, it’s no surprise “Breaking Dawn” dominated the box office during its opening weekend. And even with a slew of highly anticipated films opening this weekend — “The Muppets,” “Hugo” and “Arthur Christmas” among them — the fervor still surrounding “Breaking Dawn” and fans’ commitment to see the film multiple times means that the vampires and werewolves are very likely to hold the #1 spot for a while. “I have seen the movie twice,” Cade Johnson, of Salinas, California, told MTV News via email. “I would like to see it in theaters at least four times, maybe five,” he said. “It is definitely the best out of the four so far, in my opinion.” Yvonne R. Villani of Hiram, Georgia, has also vowed to see the film multiple times and has a strategy in place for how to keep herself immersed in “Twilight” goodness as long as possible: “I’ve seen this movie multiple times and plan on seeing it a few more times because I just really liked it!” she said. “I have been waiting all year and part of last year, since I read the book, for this movie to come out. I have ‘Breaking Dawn’ both in paperback and audio CD, so I figure I will start either reading it or listening to it again this week, then when I get to where the movie left-off, I will go see it again to remind myself of the differences and really compare.” “Twilight” expert Laura Byrne-Cristiano, who runs TwilightLexicon.com , said she’s noticed a lot of fans changing their opinions about “Breaking Dawn” the book now that the film version has opened. “I’ve also noticed a real shift in opinion that caught me by surprise so much so that I ran a poll about it,” said Byrne-Cristiano said. “When the novel ‘Breaking Dawn’ came out, it was a love/hate thing. But from what I’ve seen, people have really started to change their minds about it, and have come to like it. “The people who got into ‘Twilight’ after the movies came out seem to pick ‘Breaking Dawn’ as their favorite book by a landslide, which is something that never occurred to me in a million years because of all the backlash when it first came out.” So, what is it about these films that has fans so engrossed and committed? It’s a “clean movie” with universal appeal, according to fan and repeat viewer Alessandra Sorgato, who wrote to us all the way from Milan, Italy. “I’m glad that so many people can identify themselves with the characters of ‘The Twilight Saga,’ ” she said. “It kind of surprises me because Stephenie Meyer wrote a love story which is anything but ordinary — it’s not based on sex, adultery and things like that. Lately it has become quite unusual to see movies focused on morals like eternal love, true friendship, the value of family at the top of the box office,” she added. ” ‘Breaking Dawn’ is a ‘clean movie,’ still it’s very successful all over the world, and I love it.” Speaking of worldwide love and success, we found out via a quick Twitter poll that there are a slew of very dedicated fans out there who have already seen “Breaking Dawn” six times, with one on her way to a 20th viewing! “I will keep going till they stop playing it!” wrote Robyn Smyly . “I will see it 6 times and my fave scene is when Bella takes her ‘human minutes’ when they get on the island,” said Kalynn Drake . “I’ve officially seen it 5 times now as of yesterday afternoon. What can I say? I’m addicted,” admitted fan Jodi-Lynn . “I plan on seeing BD at least a dozen times in theatre, I’ve already seen it three times,” Mel Douglas chimed in. There are so many more where those came from, but the award so far for most viewings definitely goes to Fran Richards , who wowed us with this stat: “I have seen Breaking Dawn [Part] 1 a total of 19 times so far,” she wrote. “Doing a 5 show marathon today!” What would you like to see on “Twilight” Tuesdays? Jesus Take The Wheel: White Supremacist Teenager Admits To Murking Gay Classmate, Sentenced 21 Years

These kids were only in Middle School…Middle School! A California teen pleaded guilty on Monday to second-degree murder for shooting to death a 15-year-old gay classmate at his middle school who he said made unwanted sexual advances. The plea by Brandon McInerney, under an agreement with Ventura County prosecutors, brings to a close an emotionally charged case that previously resulted in a hung jury on a charge of murder with a hate crime enhancement. McInerney, who was 14 at the time of the shooting in 2008, will be sentenced to 21 years in prison without time off for good behavior when he appears before a judge in December, prosecutors said. The case drew wide attention because of its shocking premise: McInerney, in a fit of homophobic rage, killed classmate Larry King because he was offended by King’s dress and how the victim interacted with him. Prosecutors said McInerney, now 17, took a gun to E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard and sat in a computer lab with King before shooting him in the back of the head and then firing at him as he lay on the ground. King died two days later after he was removed from life support at a local hospital. King, 15, was openly gay, and McInerney’s attorneys argued he made sexual advances against their client. Ventura County prosecutors said McInerney targeted King because of his sexuality and they stressed that King, far from being the aggressor, was being bullied and was 30 pounds lighter than McInerney. Prosecutors also contended McInerney embraced a white supremacist philosophy that sees homosexuality as an abomination. Police found Nazi-inspired drawings and artifacts at his house, and a white supremacist expert testified at trial the hate-filled ideology was the reason for the killing. Defense attorneys acknowledged McInerney was the shooter but explained he had reached an emotional breaking point after King made repeated, unwanted sexual advances. They also argued their client came from a violent upbringing and juvenile court would have been the best venue to try him. So sad…this boy deserves more than 21 years. Source

End Of Days? Storms Send Cali Coastal Road Crashing Into The Pacific In Devastating Landslide

This definitely ain’t a good look for our homies on the West Side… ish is looking more like the “west slide” right now. Officials are assessing the damage from a landslide in San Pedro that was accelerated Sunday by storms that washed chunks of a buckled bluff-top roadway into the ocean. Rain exacerbated the slow-moving landslide that has left large, deepening crevices on Paseo del Mar, which runs along a coastal bluff near White Point Nature Preserve. By Sunday, the roadway had broken into pieces that crumbled into the gaping holes, while other sections fell into the ocean below. Officials have closed off Paseo del Mar from Weymouth and Western avenues, and are asking for people to keep their distance because the land remains unstable. City and county crews have for weeks been hustling to relocate sewer pipes, water lines and other infrastructure beneath the sinking roadway. It’s fortunate that there haven’t been reports of human injuries or deaths, but still — would you want to live anywhere NEAR this growing hole??? Source More On Bossip! UC Davis Cops Pepper Spraying Peaceful Protesters Placed On Leave! [Video]

These cops got crazy for no reason!: Two University of California, Davis police officers involved in the pepper spraying of seated protesters were placed on administrative leave Sunday, as the school’s chancellor accelerated an investigation of the incident and made plans to meet with protesters amid calls for her resignation. UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi said she has been inundated with reaction from alumni, staff, students and faculty over the incident Friday in which a riot gear-clad officer fires pepper spray on a line of sitting demonstrators. The protesters flinch and cover their faces but remain passive with their arms interlocked as onlookers shriek and scream out for the officer to stop. The officers placed on leave have not been identified. In a news release, the university said, “Videos taken during Friday’s arrests showed that the two officers used pepper spray on peacefully seated students.” The faculty association on Saturday called for Katehi’s resignation after video of the incident was circulated widely on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter on Saturday, saying in a letter there had been a “gross failure of leadership.” Katehi has resisted calls for her to quit, vowing instead to rigorously investigate the incident during which 10 protesters were arrested. “I am deeply saddened that this happened on our campus, and as chancellor, I take full responsibility for the incident,” Katehi said in a statement Sunday. “However, I pledge to take the actions needed to ensure that this does not happen again. I feel very sorry for the harm our students were subjected to and I vow to work tirelessly to make the campus a more welcoming and safe place.” Katehi also set a 30-day deadline for a task force investigating the incident to issue its report. The task force will be comprised of students, staff and faculty, Katehi said, and will be chosen this week. She plans to meet with demonstrators Monday at their general assembly, said her spokeswoman, Claudia Morain. The protest was held in support of the overall Occupy Wall Street movement and in solidarity with protesters at the University of California, Berkeley who were jabbed by police with batons on Nov. 9. As the video spread online and on television of an officer blasting pepper spray into the faces of seated protesters, outrage came quickly — followed almost as quickly by defense from police. However, a law enforcement official who watched the clip called the use of force “fairly standard police procedure.” Charles J. Kelly, a former Baltimore Police Department lieutenant who wrote the department’s use of force guidelines, said pepper spray is a “compliance tool” that can be used on subjects who do not resist, and is preferable to simply lifting protesters. “When you start picking up human bodies, you risk hurting them,” Kelly said. “Bodies don’t have handles on them.” After reviewing the video, Kelly said he observed at least two cases of “active resistance” from protesters. In one instance, a woman pulls her arm back from an officer. In the second instance, a protester curls into a ball. Each of those actions could have warranted more force, including baton strikes and pressure-point techniques. “What I’m looking at is fairly standard police procedure,” Kelly said. Images of police actions have served to galvanize support during the Occupy Wall Street movement, from the clash between protesters and police in Oakland last month that left an Iraq War veteran with serious injuries to more recent skirmishes in New York City, San Diego, Denver and Portland, Ore. Some of the most notorious instances went viral online, including the use of pepper spray on an 84-year-old activist in Seattle and a group of women in New York. Seattle’s mayor apologized to the activist, and the New York Police Department official shown using pepper spray on the group of women lost 10 vacation days after an internal review. In the video of the UC Davis protest, the officer, a member of the university police force, displays a bottle before spraying its contents in a sweeping motion while walking back and forth in front of the demonstrators. Most of the protesters have their heads down, but several were hit directly in the face. Some members of a crowd gathered at the scene scream and cry out. The crowd then chants, “Shame on You,” as the protesters on the ground are led away. The officers retreat minutes later with helmets on and batons drawn. Nine students hit by pepper spray were treated at the scene, two were taken to hospitals and later released, university officials said. UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza has said the decision to use pepper spray was made at the scene. “The students had encircled the officers,” she said Saturday. “They needed to exit. They were looking to leave but were unable to get out.” Katehi said the university is challenged by its capacity to balance freedom of expression with the need to feel safe. “These past few days our campus has been confronted with serious questions which will challenge us for many months and years to come,” Katehi said. Turn the page for the actual footage of the incident.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Screenwriter Invited Herself To Wedding

‘I was [Bella’s mom] Renee’s friend from California,’ Melissa Rosenberg says of scripting backstory for her ‘Part 1’ cameo. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz The wedding scene from “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit The first “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” teaser trailer , released back in June, gave fans a look at the wedding of Bella Swan and Edward Cullens. But equally interesting were the guests of honor featured in the wedding sequence, which introduced new characters like the Denali clan of vampires. But with the movie in theaters on Friday (November 18), one attendee in particular will likely have Twilighters geeking out. “The Twilight Saga” author Stephenie Meyer made her first cameo in the series back in 2008’s “Twilight,” playing a restaurant patron. But the author-turned-executive producer on parts 1 and 2 of “Breaking Dawn” couldn’t resist returning to the big screen so she could attend the wedding ceremony she inspired. In a blink-and-you-miss it moment, Meyer can be spotted sitting in the pews on Bella and Edward’s big day. But she’s not the only behind-the-scenes figure who makes a sneak appearance. “I’m right next to her!” “Breaking Dawn” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg recently told MTV News. Rosenberg understands, however, if fans don’t recognize her on the first viewing, because even she couldn’t find her cameo at first. She admitted to jokingly telling director Bill Condon that “there’s one guest at the wedding who’s not seen enough,” until Condon added a few more frames in the movie. But when Rosenberg still couldn’t spot herself among the guests, Condon took matters into his own hands. “Finally, during one screening, he stopped and said, ‘See! There you are!’ ” she said with a laugh. “It was Stephenie and then [producer] Wyck Godfrey and then myself and then [producer] Bill Bannerman, we were all in the same row at the wedding.” And as Meyer and Rosenberg are behind the “Twilight Saga” screenplays, it only makes sense that they took the time to come up with a backstory for their respective characters at the wedding. “Stephenie was married to Wyck, and I was [Bella’s mom] Renee’s friend from California,” Rosenberg explained. It sounds like there’s a fan-fiction to be written about the time between Meyer’s diner dinner and when she got invited to the Cullen wedding!” Did you spot the screenwriters in “Breaking Dawn – Part”? Erick Sermon Recalls ‘Pains’ Before Heart Attack

‘Go out there and check yourself, it don’t matter which age you are,’ 42-year-old EPMD rap vet tells ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Rob Markman Erick Sermon Photo: FilmMagic Rap veteran Erick Sermon is on the road to recovery after suffering a mild heart attack last week, he tells MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway. The EPMD rapper/producer called into Shade 45’s “Sway in the Morning” radio show on Tuesday (November 15) and described to listeners how things unfolded. After recording a track last Wednesday, the Green-Eyed Bandit was relaxing when he started to feel discomfort. “I sat on the sofa and I got two sharp pains on my left-hand side,” Sermon, 42, told Sway from the hospital where he has been recovering for the past five days. The platinum producer didn’t think much of the pain, though, and instead of seeking help, just shifted to a better position on the couch and kept watching TV. The next afternoon, Sermon began experiencing the pains in his side again and decided to head to the hospital. “When I got there, as soon as I hit the door, my whole left side cramped up on me and the heart palpitations started going really fast again and I started to get the pains again,” he recalled. The Long Island, New York, rap star seemed to have taken action just in the nick of time. According to Sermon, his blood pressure was “200 over 190,” and if he would’ve waited much longer, things could have gotten far more serious. “If I didn’t get there in time, I would’ve suffered a stroke first, then I really would’ve been in trouble,” he said.”So when I got to the emergency room, they did all these tests and said that the heart attack was a mild one.” Sermon’s health scare came just days after another hip-hop icon, Heavy D, died suddenly . Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the 44-year-old rapper/actor’s death. And in October, Rick Ross had his own health issues , suffering two seizures in one day; the Miami rapper has slowly been getting back into the swing of things. Sermon, who is still in the hospital after undergoing a procedure to unclog his arteries, warned listeners to take their health seriously. “Go out there and check yourself, it don’t matter which age you are,” he urged. With health in hip-hop becoming such an important topic of late, rapper N.O.R.E. will stop by “RapFix Live” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET to discuss the steps he’s taken to shed pounds and live healthy. Ross and Meek Mill will also check in on this week’s live stream. Tune in to “Sway in the Morning,” on SiriusXM Radio’s Shade 45 , Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon ET. Catch up with Rick Ross, Meek Mill and N.O.R.E. on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live” at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com! Related Artists Erick Sermon

Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music Album Will Be ‘Great Music’

‘I just sent ‘Ye like 12 beats the other day,’ producer Hit-Boy tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias Kanye West Photo: Getty Images As soloists, Kanye West ‘s G.O.O.D. Music roster has proven to be formidable hip-hop hitmakers. Now put Big Sean , Kid Cudi , Pusha T and Kanye West together on one album and expectations will no doubt run high. In October, West set things up when he tweeted, “GOODMUSIC.THE ALBUM.SPRING2012,” and the date couldn’t come soon enough. While label producer Hit-Boy couldn’t confirm the sonic direction of the compilation, he assured MTV News that it’ll be quality. “It’s going to be G.O.O.D. Music-esque, which is great music,” the “N—as in Paris” producer said when he sat with MTV News last week. It’s a safe bet that ‘Ye will remain chief producer, but that doesn’t mean he won’t enlist others as he did on his 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and his tag-team album with Jay-Z, Watch the Throne . “We actually already started a couple of ideas for that, just bouncing around stuff,” Hit-Boy confirmed. “I just sent ‘Ye like 12 beats the other day. He hit me like, ‘I need joints.’ So we’re just going in.” The California producer scored the most exciting track on WTT with “N—as in Paris,” but he revealed to MTV News that he made a few more records for the high-profile album that just didn’t make the final cut. “The crazy thing about the ‘Paris’ record is that record just came out of nowhere, pretty much,” Hit-Boy said. “I did other records that were talked about being singles and all types of stuff, so I was hyped over those records.” It seems that those records won’t go to waste either as a few, if not all, will end up on the G.O.O.D. Music album. “We made a lot of music around the time we were working on Watch the Throne so joints will end up where they’re supposed to,” he said.
