The Painted Lady: Jena Malone on Nowness.com . “Perched in a dreamy rose garden, a seductive and melancholic Jena Malone narrates this poetic 19th-century-inspired short by filmmaker and author Liz Goldwyn. Part of a series of works devoted to demystifying the sex industry, The Painted Lady casts the future Hunger Games: Catching Fire star—who made her name in Donnie Darko and Saved!—as a young woman who recalls an encounter with a lushly powdered call girl. As Malone’s distinctive voice glides over the hazy footage, intercut shots transform her baby-faced ingénue into a defiant, colorfully made-up femme fatale against a floral backdrop.” I couldn’t have said it better myself….this is Jenna Malone….who is now 27 ….who looks a bit too much like monster Rumor Willis for my liking…..in some art film shot 6 years ago…where she’s topless and smoking…like all aspiring actors should be….even when flat chested…and that is something you need to see….this glorious Friday…
Now under the guiding force of Disney , Star Wars ‘ next director is becoming a source of intrigue. Last week one major rumored contender – Steven Spielberg – said he is a no-go and now two other front-running prospects have weighed in with their interest. The studio, which recently nabbed Star Wars creator George Lucas ‘ Lucas Films recently for $4.05 billion and tapped Arndt to lead the way on Star Wars: Episode VII , which is set for 2015. Spielberg, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird were reportedly sent extended treatments written for all three planned Star Wars installments. He is in talks to write Star Wars: Episode VII , which will go into production in time for its 2015 target release. But the initial batch of front-running possible directors seem to be whittling down on their own volition, though the talk-downs may always be more about containing expectations than actual intent. But on the surface, J.J. Abrams appears to be bowing out, while another contender, Jon Favreau , is being less resigned to the prospect of taking on the reboot. “I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series…,” said Abrams to HollywoodLife. “I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!” Favreau, however, walked the fence, noting that he’s worked on the Skywalker Ranch with Lucas on Clone Wars and Iron Man to great success, adding to HollywoodLife: “I am just giddy, first and foremost as a fan, to see what happens with it. I think there is a lot of question marks of how they are going to do it, and who they are going to do it with, and what the story is going to be about; but to say that I am not excited about it is definitely an understatement. We’ll see.” Spielberg said last week that Star Wars isn’t his thing, telling Access Hollywood at the L.A. premiere of Lincoln , “No, no! It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre.” Arndt actually was brought into the mix by Lucasfilm before Disney took over. Part of the sale included the “pretty extensive and detailed treatment for what would be the next three movies – the trilogy,” noted Disney’s Jay Rasulo, according to Deadline. Speculation has mounted that the franchise’s original stars, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will reprise their roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. In addition to his Oscar-winning screenplay for Little Miss Sunshine and nomination for Toy Story 3 , Arndt has written the screenplays for the upcoming Hunger Games: Catching Fire and a Pixar project dubbed “Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside the Mind” for director Pete Docter. The people behind The Hobbit are no fans of what they perceive as imitators. Warner Bros., New Line Cinema and MGM as well as Hobbit producer Saul Zaentz are taking backers of low-budget pic Age of the Hobbits for trademark infringement. The plaintiffs say that movie label The Asylum, which is behind a slate of “mock-busters” that spoof Hollywood movies, is “free-riding on the marketing campaign of Peter Jackson’s upcoming string of Hobbit pics, beginning next month with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey . Producers of the Jackson film called Age of the Hobbits an “international and willful attempt to trade on the popularity and goodwill” of the filmmaker’s The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, according to BBC. And producers are not looking for any compromise either. They are asking for all “infringing and ad materials and packaging for The Asylum’s Hobbit to be destroyed, claiming it may “divert customers and potential customers away from the Hobbit films.” The Zaentz Co which controls the trademark rights to the Tolkien book has also threatened legal action. Age of the Hobbits is due for a DVD and online release December 11th, just three days before the U.S. opening of Jackson’s Hobbit . “Age of the Hobbits is about the real-life human subspecies, Homo Floresiensis, discovered in 2003 in Indonesia, which have been uniformly referred to as ‘Hobbits’ in the scientific community,” noted Asylum in a statement, adding that it is therefore “protected under the legal doctrines of nominal and traditional fair use.” Aylum also said a Google search of ‘hobbits’ and archaeology would turn up a dozen of disparate articles. Asylum’s previous “mock-busters” include Transmorphers , based on Michael Bay’s big budget movie Transformers , and The Da Vinci Treasure , which took its name from The Da Vinci Code , directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks. Whether you love or hate the idea of Disney acquiring and expanding the Star Wars franchise, you can’t say the House of Mouse isn’t treating Episode VII like the prestige project is deserves to be. Vulture reports that screenwriter Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar for his Little Miss Sunshine script, and was nominated for another with Toy Story 3 , is the leading candidate to write the new Star Wars script The website cites insiders who say that Arndt, who’s also the screenwriter for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire , has written a 40- to 50-page treatment, and will probably be one of the screenwriters on board when shooting begins in 2014. In addition to being a successful screenwriter who’s worked successfully with Pixar, Vulture notes that Arndt has lectured extensively on “why the original Star Wars ending is so creatively satisfying.” Turns out it’s not because there’s a big explosion at the end. Although the plot of Episode VII remains the subject of much speculation , Vulture indicates that Disney wants to bring back the three main characters from the original Star Wars : Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo. Reportedly, Harrison Ford is “open” to reprising that last role , despite his apparently conflicted feelings about the character that made him a bankable actor.
