Can Betty White Help Community Topple Big Bang Theory?

One of the most unfortunate scheduling reveals during upfront week came when CBS shifted their Monday night behemoth Big Bang Theory to Thursday at 8pm, placing it in direct competition with the ratings-deficient NBC sitcom Community . So how does Community plan on fighting back against such imposing odds? By hiring Betty White, of course.

Behar: Liberal Opinions Come from Being Smart; Conservatives Closed-Minded

It’s patently obvious HLN host Joy Behar has a disdain for the conservative point of view. But is it because she is ideologically liberal, or perhaps does she just think it is “cooler” to be liberal?  On CBS’s July 11 “Sunday Morning,” CBS correspondent and sometime fill-in “Evening News” anchor Russ Mitchell interviewed the HLN host of “The Joy Behar Show.” He asked her about views and where this view came from. “Her unabashed liberal opinions often lead to some heated debates with her ‘View’ co-hosts … especially with the politically conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck,” Mitchell said. “Where did this liberal streak come from?” Turns out, it isn’t because of a particular issue or set of reasons she is a self-proclaimed liberal, but because Behar suggests there’s a higher intellect if you’re a liberal. “It comes from being smart,” Behar said. And Behar has paraded this “smartness” on “The View” and her HLN show. She has attacked prayer as a substitute for thinking , accused former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin of intentionally making her children media targets and exhibited irrational hatred for Rep Michele Bachmann, R-Minn. , not unlike most of those “smart” people on the left that seem to think a backbencher congresswoman from Minnesota is a threat to civil society . Mitchell reacted to Behar’s response by asking what her “The View” co-host would have to say about her conclusion. Behar response: Conservatives are just closed-minded.

NBC Offers Additional 35 Seconds to Story of Controversial Medicare Appointment, ABC, CBS Still Silent

NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams became the first evening news broadcast to cover the recess appointment of Donald Berwick to run Medicare. Anchor Brian Williams asserted that “Republicans are angry, claiming it’s antagonistic.” He also observed, ” Berwick has spoken about the need to ration medical care to control costs.” NBC has offered the most reporting on Berwick: 20 seconds during the Today show on Wednesday and 35 seconds on Thursday’s Nightly News. Those 55 seconds are still more than ABC and CBS’s morning and evening news programs. Their total remains at zero. Yet, the same morning shows (on July 7 and 8) devoted 52 minutes to the important topic of Lindsay Lohan’s sentencing. Although Williams blandly explained that Berwick has “spoken about the need to ration medical care,” he offered no quotes. While talking to a British audience in 2008, he promised, “The decision is not whether or not we will ration care, the decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open.” For more, see CNSNews.com . A transcript of the July 8 segment, which aired at 7:17pm EDT, follows: BRIAN WILLIAMS: In this country, a new political skirmish in Washington over health care. It’s about an appointment President Obama made while Congress was out for the July Fourth break, a so-called recess appointment naming Harvard professor Dr. Donald Berwick to manage Medicare and Medicaid, skipping the usual Senate confirmation process. Republicans are angry, claiming it’s antagonistic. One top Democrat called the recess appointment troubling, but the administration fired back, saying this was one of many appointments being blocked by the Senate. Berwick has spoken about the need to ration medical care to control costs.

CBS Host Admits Levi Johnston Apology ‘Highly Under-Reported’

On Friday’s CBS Early Show, fill-in co-host Erica Hill confessed Levi Johnston’s apology for making false statements about the Palin family was “highly under-reported.” During the ‘Early Wrap’ segment, Hill told a panel of media pundits: “My favorite story of the week, which was highly under-reported…is that Levi Johnston came out and said….Some things he said about the Palin family were not true.” It’s interesting that Hill used the phrase “under-reported,” when CBS did not cover Johnston’s admission at all since he made the statement in a Tuesday interview with People Magazine. Meanwhile, the network, and the Early Show in particular, heavily promoted Johnston’s claims about the Palins last year.    In response to Hill, panelist Joe Levy, editor-in-chief of Maxim Magazine, dismissed the revelation: “Wow. So, a teenager who breaks up with his girlfriend says untrue things about her and her family? That is a shocker. I don’t think that’s ever happened before.” Fellow panelist, Daily Show correspondent Olivia Munn, chimed in: “I think he needs to apologize for his Playgirl spread first and then go to the Palins….Because America is hurt, first and foremost, and then some people in Alaska.” Earlier in the panel discussion, Hill asked for reactions to the heat wave. Levy complained: “I don’t know when we moved to the surface of Venus.” CBS contributor Mo Rocca later pointed out: “We should not confuse weather with climate, though, right? This shouldn’t necessarily be an indication of climate change.” Levy replied: “No, but it would be nice if the global heating deniers who thought, ‘hey, it was cold last winter, there’s no such thing as global heating, right?’ now had to eat their words and say ‘hey, there’s a heat wave so-‘” Implying that she was one such “denier” Munn interrupted: “I prefer you to address me by my first name, Olivia.” Rocca then joked: “But even Al Gore would say that this is just Earth’s second chakra, just acting up a little bit.”   Here is a transcript of the two exchanges during the July 9 segment: 8:33AM ET ERICA HILL: What I want to know is – I’m impressed that you all survived – you survived the heat wave. You live here in New York City, Mo, how did you do it? Surviving the heat wave? MO ROCCA [CBS NEWS CONTRIBUTOR]: I did the only sensible thing I could do, I spent the weekend in Houston. I really did, I went to Houston. HILL: Where it felt cooler and less humid? ROCCA: There was actually a chill. I had to borrow a pashmina. It was that cold, in comparison. HILL: That’s unfortunate. ROCCA: Yes. HILL: What did you make of the heat wave, Joe? JOE LEVY [EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, MAXIM MAGAZINE]: I don’t know when we moved to the surface of Venus, I don’t understand. I thought I’d be consulted if we were making a planetary move, but no, we just – literally the building down the street from me was on fire yesterday, the roof, big roof fire down the street. HILL: That fire was crazy, I saw it. LEVY: I didn’t know how they knew it was that hot. No, nothing? [LAUGHTER] HILL: It was a nice try, though. OLIVIA MUNN [CORRESPONDENT, THE DAILY SHOW]: I’m from Oklahoma – you know, right above Texas, fun fact – and it’s very humid there all of the time. So I – when I would walk out, when people would talk about the heat, I wasn’t really – it’s hot? ROCCA: But the wind comes sweeping down the plain, doesn’t it? MUNN: When I’m in a covered wagon it does. ROCCA: Right, okay, with the fringe on the top. We should not confuse weather with climate, though, right? This shouldn’t necessarily be an indication of climate change. LEVY: No, but it would be nice if the global heating deniers who thought, ‘hey, it was cold last winter, there’s no such thing as global heating, right?’ now had to eat their words and say ‘hey, there’s a heat wave so-‘ MUNN: I prefer you to address me by my first name, Olivia. HILL: Oh. ROCCA: But even Al Gore would say that this is just Earth’s second chakra, just acting up a little bit. HILL: Very nice. ROCCA: Thanks. …. HILL: My favorite story of the week, which was highly under-reported – and I’m glad you’re sitting down for this – is that Levi Johnston came out and said that he had- LEVY: He came out? HILL: No, no. ROCCA: That’s amazing. HILL: He came out and said. MUNN: Man, let her finish. HILL: Thank you, Olivia. Some things he said about the Palin family were not true, not true. LEVY: Wow. So, a teenager who breaks up with his girlfriend says untrue things about her and her family? That is a shocker. I don’t think that’s ever happened before. MUNN: I think he needs to apologize for his Playgirl spread first and then go to the Palins. HILL: And then – because that was more egregious ? MUNN: Because America is hurt, first and foremost, and then some people in Alaska. ROCCA: Just when he thought he was out, they pull him right back in. It’s amazing, that family. HILL: The bond. ROCCA: Yes. HILL: The bond. Mo Rocca, Joe Levy, Olivia Munn, good to have you with us this morning. MUNN: Thanks for having us.

Evening News Watch: NBC Trick May Have Enabled Big 3 Nets to Avoid Going Below Combined 19 Million Last Week

Last week, Matt Robare at NewsBusters noted the fact that the Big 3 networks’ combined year-over-year audience fell by a bit more than 1 million during the second quarter. Last week’s showing appears to be to a slight pickup over the previous week, but it may have been much worse. Here, per Media Bistro, is how the the week of June 28 as reported by Nielsen compared to the week of June 21, the last reporting week of the aforementioned dismal quarter: June 21 — NBC – 7,190,000; ABC – 6,740,000; CBS – 5,230,000; Total – 19,160,000. June 28 — NBC – 7,800,000; ABC – 6,740,000; CBS – 4,970,000; Total – 19,510,000. So how did NBC attract over 600,000 additional viewers during the week of June 28, increasing its audience by over 8%? The answer, according to Media Bistro’s Kevin Allocca, is that the network probably didn’t: On Thursday and Friday, “NBC Nightly News” was coded as “Nitely News” in the Nielsen ratings (similar to last summer) and the newscast was therefore excluded from the average over those two lower-rated days heading into the holiday weekend while Brian Williams was out. ABC and CBS averages are based on all five days. Clever, eh? In his coverage of last year’s NBC similar trick during the week of June 29 — a week where the reported combined audience was 20,180,000 — Media Bistro’s Chris Ariens observed that “The practice, however, is within Nielsen’s guidelines.” Some “guidelines.” That’s like a baseball team getting away with excluding its worst two innings, or an NBA team unilaterally deciding that the second half didn’t count. Given that one of its competitors lost ground week to week while the other just stayed even, it’s reasonable to believe that NBC’s June 28 full-week performance was no better than June 21. If so, the total audience at the Big Three networks really fell below 19 million. Oh, how the formerly mighty in the statism-compliant establishment media have fallen, and continue to fall. Morning Shows Devote 48 Minutes to Lindsay Lohan, a Scant 20 Seconds to Appointment of Controversial Doctor

Over the span of two days, the network morning shows have given just 20 seconds of coverage to the recess appointment of Donald Berwick, a pro-rationing doctor who will run Medicare. In contrast, Good Morning America, Today and Early Show devoted 48 minutes of coverage to every detail of Lindsay Lohan’s sentencing. On Wednesday and Thursday’s GMA, ABC hosts discussed Lohan for 14 minutes. CBS’s Early Show managed 12 minutes to the important topic. Both programs had no mention of Berwick, who once told an audience in Great Britain, “Please, don’t put your faith in market forces.” NBC’s Today, so far, has been the only morning show to mention Berwick at all. On Wednesday, news reader Lester Holt explained: President Obama is expected to appoint his choice to oversee Medicare and Medicaid today, while Congress is in recess. This means Dr. Donald Berwick won’t have to undergo Senate confirmation hearings. Republicans had wanted to question the Harvard professor and healthcare policy expert about comments he made on rationing medical care. However, this 20 second brief hardly explains Berwick’s comments, including this statement, also in Britain: “I hope you realize and affirm how badly you need–how badly the world needs–an example at scale of a health care system that is universal, accessible, excellent and free at the point of care–a health system that, at its core is like the world we wish we had: generous, hopeful, confident, joyous and just.” However, Today also allotted the most time to the Lohan story: 24 minutes over two days. For more, see coverage at CNSNews.com . Also see a blog by the MRC’s Geoff Dickens for more on the lack of coverage .

Local CBS Staff Join Hollywood Celebs in ‘The Dream Lives On’ Boston Pops Tribute to Kennedys

Less than an hour before CBS’s Craig Ferguson-hosted 10 PM EDT “ Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular” national broadcast on Sunday night, local anchors Jack Williams and Lisa Hughes from Boston’s CBS-owned television station , along with a couple of local actors, took to the stage to narrate the music-accompanied “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers.” ( Video: downloadable from NB twenty second wmv clip of Williams and Hughes in action.) Introducing the 20-minute production carried by WBZ-TV channel 4 in Boston in its 8-10 PM EDT coverage, Pops conductor Keith Lockhart ludicrously insisted it was “not political” — even though it takes its name from Ted Kennedy’s very political 2008 Democratic convention speech aimed at motivating Democrats to push for left-wing policies, starting with nationalized health care, and culminates by quoting the call to arms in that address: “If we set our compass true, we will reach our destination. The work begins anew, the hope rises again and the dream lives on!” That line was read by actor Morgan Freeman Jr. in the original May 18 production at Boston’s Symphony Hall ( mov video excerpt ) and coinciding with the concert at Boston’s Hatch Shell along the Charles River, the Pops trumpeted : On July 4, the Boston Pops will release a CD featuring the live recording of the world premiere performances of “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers,” which took place at Symphony Hall May 18 & 19 with guest narrators Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Cherry Jones… In liner notes for the CD (PDF) , composer Peter Boyer expressed a “deep admiration for the Kennedys” and related: [I]t was not until I began to research his life for this project that I became more fully aware of the remarkable scope of his legislative achievements , over more than four decades. For me, the most inspiring aspects of the Kennedy brothers’ legacy are a commitment to idealism, and a sense of enduring optimism for our nation and for mankind. Thus the title of the work, The Dream Lives On, is taken from one of Ted Kennedy’s last public speeches, at the Democratic National Convention in 2008. My May 16 NewsBusters post, “ Leading Actors Lend Their Voices to Boston Pops’ Tribute to the Kennedy Brothers, ” described: A production which “combines quotes from speeches by the Kennedy brothers with original text and video, accompanied by a dramatic orchestral and choral score” so it “pays tribute to the towering achievements and singular spirit epitomized by the Kennedy brothers – the call to public service, drive for social change, and the legacy of optimism for America’s future.”… A promotional video features “Tony Award-winning lyricist Lynn Ahrens” relating the lyrics she created for the concert: Now on the rain-slicked streets of Boston and across the wind-swept Cape Code sea, over the din of Washington’s halls and down the halls of history, their passionate words can still be heard, their highest ideals a clarion call; these three American brothers inspiring the best in us all. More celebrity performances are to come: Actor Alec Baldwin will take the lead for a July 18 performance at Tanglewood and actor Chris Cooper will narrate a Hyannis Village Green event on August 1.

CBS Legal Correspondent: Senate Democrats Can Blame Themselves for Kagan Confirmation Difficulties

There have been a lot of complaints from the left over the opposition Supreme Court Justice nominee Elena Kagan has faced from Senate Republicans in her battle to win confirmation. But Kagan proponents should have seen this day coming when Democrats in the Senate did the same things to try to slow the confirmations of Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito. On CBS’s July 4 “Face the Nation,” CBS legal correspondent Jan Crawford explained why. Previously throughout these types of confirmation processes, the Senate would approve a President’s nominee, assuming the candidate was qualified. But President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Judiciary Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. all set a new precedence when George W. Bush was president. “Historically, [Kagan] would have been confirmed like Justice Ginsburg was, 96-3, or Justice Breyer, 87-9, but things changed. I mean, things changed 10 years ago, when Democrats started filibustering President Bush’s qualified nominees,” Crawford said. “I had a talk about all this — I guess, what, five or six years ago with Mitch McConnell. You know, he said memories are long in the U.S. Senate. People remember what the Democrats — including President Obama, Vice President Biden, Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy — did. ” According to Crawford, this will ultimately change the public’s perception of the Supreme Court. “They not only voted against Sam Alito, who is just as qualified as Elena Kagan in really every way, had liberal support. They voted to block his nomination. So in some ways, what goes around comes around. She’s going to get confirmed, but there’s also a little bit of payback here, and she’s not going to get 96 votes like Justice Ginsburg. And the – – the — the problem with that is that it damages — ultimately, the loser, it’s not Elena Kagan. She’s going to get confirmed. It’s the courts. I mean, it makes the Supreme Court look in the people’s mind politicized. When you have these bipartisan votes on qualified nominees, the danger is the court itself looks political. And I think that’s a real problem long term.” And Crawford said she thinks this partisan gridlock needs to stop, regardless who is to blame. “But, you know, I mean, listen, I mean, in some ways, it’s like, you know, my 9-year-old will say, ‘You know, she started it,’ referring to my 6-year-old,” Crawford said. “At some point, somebody has got to be a grown- up and say, ‘Listen, I don’t care who started it. We’re going to stop it, and let’s realize what the stakes are here.'”
