Cobie Smulders on How I Met Your Mother, Reprising Robin Sparkles and On-Set Jam Sessions

She may not be a former Canadian pop star in real life, but Cobie Smulders plays one on TV. As Robin Scherbatsky on CBS’ s Emmy-winning How I Met Your Mother , the Vancouver-born actress plays a morning-news anchor who dabbled in bubblegum pop music in the early ’80s under the stage name Robin Sparkles. And while Robin’s clique of thirtysomething friends — played by Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan — have only uncovered two recordings to date, the music videos have been so popular that they have inspired dozens of fan parodies on YouTube. Aside from being a former pop star though, Smulders’ character is also the show’s consummate bachelorette who just this season won the heart of Neil Patrick Harris’ comically machismo bachelor. As How I Met Your Mother ‘s fifth season winds down, Cobie Smulders caught Movieline up on her character’s lost variety show with Alan Thicke, the scenes she hated filming this season and her favorite guest star to date. [ Spoilerphobes beware: Smulders revealed a few mild plot twists ahead in the series’ fifth season. ]

Helen Mirren to Play Nanny to Russell Brand

Unkempt up-and-comer Russell Brand has been attached to a remake of the Dudley Moore comedy Arthur for quite a while, and now he’s found a scene partner. Helen Mirren will be stepping into the role played by John Gielgud in the 1981 original, only now the character has been reconceived as Arthur’s longtime nanny. Producers originally went after Meryl Streep for the part, but hey, there’s still time for her to play the love interest. [ THR ]

Salt Gives Jolie a Sexist Makeover

How much did the upcoming action thriller Salt change when Angelina Jolie took the part meant for Tom Cruise? “In the original script, there was a huge sequence where Edwin Salt saves his wife, who’s in danger,” director Phillip Noyce told EW . “And what we found was when Evelyn Salt saved her husband in the new script, it seemed to castrate his character a little. So we had to change the nature of that relationship.” Yes, even gorgeous, imaginary action heroines have husbands who are threatened by their success. Thanks, Hollywood! [ EW ]

Sue Sylvester, Glee Cast Cover Vogue

This is an amazing video. While Glee returned to Fox last night with a new episode , the Internet is buzzing today over the song that aired after the installment itself concluded. Featuring Jane Lynch as her character of Sue Sylvester, and along with a couple other Glee cast members, the show actually put together a shot-for-shot recreation of Madonna’s “Vogue” music video. It’s elaborate, it’s entertaining and it’s incredible that a TV show went to this length in order to promote an upcoming episode (tune in next week for a lot more of the Material Girl !). Seriously, if this doesn’t make you a Glee fan, nothing will. Sit back and watch the video below. Sue Sylvester Vogue
