Kristen Stewart A ‘Gung-Ho’ Action Star In ‘Snow White’

‘Huntsman’ director Rupert Sanders also discusses the ‘fiendish’ Charlize Theron for MTV News’ Summer Movie Preview Week. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Pictures It’s clear from all we’ve seen from the “Snow White and the Huntsman” trailers, photos and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks that this film is a stepping stone for Kristen Stewart in many ways. When MTV News caught up with the film’s director, Rupert Sanders, recently, he explained how everyone involved in the project stepped up their game for this modern take on a medieval story. “Kristen is a very driven, visceral, intuitive actress. From a director’s point of view, it’s great to get into her headspace,” he explained. “We did a lot of work together on the script and character, and she really helped inform me how that character was feeling, which really helped my process getting the character onscreen. Kristen was doing a lot of her stunt work, she was riding horses, she was jumping from high precipices into freezing cold water, she was fighting dwarves — she’s gung-ho. Sanders said Stewart’s co-star Charlize Theron was equally gung-ho with respect to the lengths she went to take her beauty into a dark and horrible place. “[She] becomes fiendish,” Sanders said. “She was willing to get in tubs of black oil, surrounded by dead ravens, and crawl her way out. For a director, what’s great about these two actors is that they will go beyond what you ask of them, and I think it really shows in the performances they’ve given. They’re both very unlike any performance I’ve seen either of them deliver.” The first-time feature director promised that fans will not be disappointed by what they’ll see onscreen when the film opens June 1. “What I’m most proud of is that it’s not a popcorn movie in that respect. It’s big and it’s epic and there’s lots of battle sequences, but it really hits you,” he said. “There’s not a lot of weeping, but it’s a very intense ride. You’re really at the edge of people’s boundaries. There are new ways of seeing action, which I’m excited about. It’s a very modern take on a medieval film but doesn’t feel like we’re trying to do anything trendy or of the minute. It still feels practical.” It’s Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies . ‘Snow White And The Huntsman’ Costumes: An Exclusive Look

Colleen Atwood leads MTV News through the intricate fashions. By Kara Warner Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Studios Hey Kristen Stewart and reimagined fairy tale fans! Have we got a special treat for you: a brand new exclusive behind-the-scenes look at “Snow White and the Huntsman” with Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood. Over the course of the nearly four-minute featurette, Atwood, who has three Oscars to her name for “Alice in Wonderland,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Chicago,” walks us through some of the details and inspiration behind the intricate wardrobe worn by the film’s leading ladies, Stewart and Charlize Theron . “I’ve seen actors find their characters in so many different ways in my life. I think they don’t realize they’ve already found it, but the moment when they put on hair and makeup and the costume, they’re there, they’ve arrived,” Atwood said of watching actors try on her designs for the first time. “Sometimes because the costume goes on last after hair and makeup and everything, that feels like the hero, but it’s really the [actor].” One of Stewart’s most intricate costumes is her armor, which Atwood said they wanted to tell a story on its own. “There are a lot of messages in her armor. The concept is [Snow White] comes to a place in the story and decides to go to battle and lead her future people,” Atwood said. “She doesn’t have time to have armor made, so we took elements of different armor to compile a look and so [Stewart] could also do action in it.” Atwood added that Theron’s costumes were equally exciting to make. “You can’t design for [Queen] Ravenna without having Charlize to work the costume. We had a great time,” Atwood said. “She wanted to have fun with it and not be too strapped into the clich

Florence Welch Inspired By Evil Queen Ravenna For ‘Snow White’ Track

Welch says she got a lot of material for ‘Breath of Life’ from Charlize Theron’s beautifully wicked character. By James Montgomery Florence Welch Photo: Samir Hussein/ Redferns When Florence Welch was asked to write a song for the upcoming “Snow White and the Huntsman” soundtrack, she was given the opportunity to watch a select few scenes from the film itself … and almost automatically, she found herself drawing inspiration from a rather unlikely source: Namely, Charlize Theron’s wicked Queen Ravenna. “The Queen is just this incredible character; so hungry for life but so dead inside. She’s sort of eternal, but inside there’s nothing. She’s kind of like charcoal or something,” Welch told MTV News on Thursday (March 29). “[There are] these amazing scenes where she’s kind of picking out birds’ hearts and eating them. [She has] this thirst for youth and for life, but for what kind of life? This darkness, but she’s so beautiful, so it’s this kind of juxtaposition between beauty and, ultimately, death.” So, in a bit of a, uh, non-traditional move, Welch ended up writing a song called “Breath of Life,” which is sung very much from the perspective of the Queen herself (“I got a lot of material from her!” she laughed. “Beauty, death, life … it was pushing all of my buttons.”) So you can imagine her surprise when, after submitting the song, she found herself sitting in London’s Abbey Road studio, watching it all come together under the care of famed composer James Newton Howard. “We went in and demoed the track, these big, clattering drums, huge bass sounds and everything was very intense … and then we sent that to the guys in L.A. who composed it. And it was amazing to see the music we played being turned into this amazing orchestral thing,” Welch laughed. “You feel in a bit of a way like you’re kind of making it up as you go along, and then when you see it done, laid out before you in such a beautiful, orchestral fashion, it’s really incredible. And then we all went into Abbey Road and it was one of the best days of my life; I love choirs and I love choral music, and there was a 60-piece choir singing the vocal parts that I had written. When the baritones came in, I nearly wept, it was so emotional.” And thanks to all that, in a still-growing career that’s seemingly one highlight after the next, Welch said that writing and recording “Breath” was perhaps her favorite moment to date. Even if the whole 60-member choir thing did give her management team palpitations. “My manager was looking at me going ‘Do not get used to this. We cannot afford this 60-piece choir!’ ” she laughed. “It was just wonderful. Me and Isa [Summers, Welch’s Machine partner, and co-writer of the track] were in there, these young women who made music for love, but with not much money or much reason. … It was a really proud day for us. And, musically, for the composers at Universal to have understood the song and see it played out so beautifully, it was an amazing day. We felt a bit proper.” Who else do you hope to hear on the “Snow White and the Huntsman” soundtrack? Leave your pick in the comments section below! Weekend Receipts: Jump For Joy

Despite the stiff competition of the NCAA tournament and the local bar, the multiplex fared all right over St. Patrick’s Day weekend: The single new wide release 21 Jump Street was a hit, and The Lorax retained its blockbuster status in its third week of release. Not bad! Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. 21 Jump Street Gross: $35,000,000 (new) Screens: 3,121 (PSA $11,214) Weeks: 1 Despite (or because of?) its R-rating, the TV reboot/adaptation scored in a terrific per-screen average and stands to come in a sturdy (if distant) second next weekend to The Hunger Games . Great job, Sony! Next up: T.J. Hooker , starring Danny McBride. OK, never mind. 2. Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax Gross: $22,800,000 ($158,400,000) Screens: 3,769 (PSA: $6,049) Weeks: 3 (Change: -41.3%) The domestic total is extraordinary, but factor in the 30 or so foreign markets where The Lorax has yet to open (or at least be reported), and we might be on the cusp of a half-billion dollar phenomenon. In which case, how do we sequelize Seuss? Do we sequelize Seuss? 3. John Carter Gross: $13,515,000 ($53,172,000) Screens: 3,749 (PSA $3,605) Weeks: 2 (Change: -55.2%) Decent overseas numbers notwithstanding, you can cry for John Carter now. 4. Project X Gross: $4,005,000 ($48,131,000) Screens: 2,922 (PSA $1,371) Weeks: 3 (Change: -64.1%) It’s not too often that you see a film averaging less than $1,400 per screen coming in fourth overall, especially after a 64 percent drop. It’s even rarer to… 5. A Thousand Words Gross: $3,750,000 ($12,103,000) Screens: 2,952 (PSA $1,979) Weeks: 2 (Change: -39.3%) …surpass a fifth-place finisher with a higher average on virtually the same number of screens. And a mere 39 percent drop. Fluke of the Irish, etc. etc. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

New Snow White and the Huntsman Trailer: Yep, Pretty Dark

We’d already caught a glimpse of Snow White and the Huntsman ‘s Crayola-dappled Middle Earth before director Rupert Sanders let on about his darker vision for the fairy tale. But now, with a latest trailer making the rounds, it can be confirmed: SWATH ! Pretty dark! Not a whole lot to add, really, except that despite all appearances, I’d still take Charlize Theron’s character in Young Adult over her heart-hungry Queen in an Evil-Off, 10 times out of 10. ‘Snow White’ Trailer Focuses On Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart Rivalry

Clip show Theron’s cold-hearted Queen Ravenna on the hunt for Stewart’s sword-wielding Snow White. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart in the “Snow White and the Huntsman” trailer Photo: Universal “Snow White and the Huntsman” is certainly the antidote to “Mirror Mirror.” For every giggle that Julia Roberts throws about in the trailer for “Mirror,” Charlize Theron (Queen Ravenna) throws a cold stare and an even colder threat in a new “Show White” trailer released Monday (March 19). Bathed in dark images and darker themes, this “Snow White” blockbuster focuses on the bloodthirsty queen in her hunt for revenge and eternal power. The key to continue her tyranny and remain the fairest of them all is Snow White’s (Kristen Stewart’s) heart. Enter the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), who has been ordered to get that heart, or else. With the classical premise laid out, the trailer is full of a sword-wielding, chainmail-clad Snow White, out to use her innate good to destroy the queen’s evil. The trailer focuses on the good-versus-evil plot while teasing the film’s eye-catching effects and landscapes. Where Ravenna brings destruction, Snow brings light, love and life. Much of Stewart’s role in the trailer relies on her ability to look both tough and vulnerable. “I see what she sees,” Stewart’s Snow reveals at one point. “I can kill her.” The trailer closes with Ravenna pledging, “Let them come,” as her evil cackle plays out the trailer. When Theron and Stewart stopped by the “Today” show Monday (March 19), Theron talked about reviving fairytales for modern audiences. “I think these stories, thematically, bleed into a lot of stuff that’s relevant,” she said. “So I’m not shocked that we’re having an outbreak of a lot of these kinds of classic fairytales being retold. There’s a way to do them in different worlds, and I think that’s the case with this. They were definitely made for very specific audiences and very different audiences.” So, was Stewart shocked by turning “Snow White” into an action film? “It is [an action movie]. It had a reason,” she told the “Today” show on Monday (March 19). “It never felt like it was a movie where you were just trying to have a strong girl character be badass. You want to join the cause, like any good script you read. I believe in it so much.” What do you think of the “Snow White and the Huntsman” trailer? Leave your comment below! Rupert Sanders On Dark Snow White and the Huntsman, ‘Twilight Girl’ Kristen Stewart, and Tarsem’s Mirror, Mirror

It may be indicative of Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders’ fearlessness – or his newness, this being his feature debut – that, after presenting much-anticipated footage to fans yesterday at WonderCon, he nonchalantly dropped the vivid phrase “dwarf gangbangs” into a discussion about his dark (and yes, likely PG-13) allegorical fairytale actioner. (Now that’s how you get the attention of a certain demographic.) For the record, there are no such scenarios in June’s action-packed SWATH , but there were many more revelations and key insights to be had into Sanders’ take on the age-old tale, which stars Twilight ’s Kristen Stewart and debuts two months after that other Snow White movie dances into theaters. Sanders spoke with journalists Saturday at WonderCon, where Stewart made a surprise appearance at the SWATH panel. Herewith, find a Movieline 9 rundown of highlights from his wide-ranging thoughts on ths film, its dark elements, Stewart’s non- Twilight career, Tarsem’s Mirror, Mirror , and more. ON MAKING HIS FEATURE DEBUT WITH A BIG-BUDGET STUDIO TENTPOLE “I couldn’t get a small film, ironically,”said Sanders, who made his name directing shorts and commercials, most notably for Halo 3 . “It’s much harder to get a small film off the ground than it is to get a big film off the ground, but the high stakes gamble on the roulette table is that if it doesn’t fall on your color you’re in a small prison in Burbank for the rest of your moviemaking days. Hopefully, that won’t happen.” His first experience in a studio feature gig was, he says, surprisingly hands-off. “It was a high stakes risk both for myself and for the studio, who very kindly wrote a very large check to get it done, and they weren’t there whipping me into line which was great. I was really expecting to be shuttered in but they trusted what we were doing and they let us go, which is all you can really ask for on a shoot with a studio.” As for the once-in-progress big screen adaptation of Halo , which stalled a few years back? “No one called me!” SANDERS HAS NEVER SEEN TWILIGHT The director was impressed with Stewart on the strengths of her other films, dating back to Panic Room , and says it’s her other work that will help her eventually overcome audience’s dominant association of her with Twilight . “I saw her first in Panic Room and I saw her again in Into the Wild ,” he recalled. “I loved her in The Runaways , I loved her in Welcome to the Rileys . I think she’s going to be incredible in On the Road . “She’s a great actor and people just go ‘ Twilight girl, Twilight girl,’ which is testament to her. She’s kept this interesting pipeline of projects going on the side so she’s not just going to be that girl forevermore. She’s a great actor and she’s made incredibly shrewd decisions for someone who’s half my age. I’d never seen the Twilight s so I didn’t really care that much. I met her, I really got on with her, she’s a great actor, she was right for the character. That’s it. It’s as simple as that for me.” ON KRISTEN STEWART VS. BELLA SWAN Sanders knows his film and his star will be fighting to counteract the specter of Twilight . “I think what I realized is that she’s such a good actor that everyone thinks she’s Bella Swan. They believe that that’s her, and obviously an actor is playing a role – she is nothing like Bella.” “She was there as I was writing stuff, we would have conversations seeing through her eyes, we really worked hard on developing that character together and I was just amazed at her talent. She’s incredibly good at her craft. She’s incredibly instinctive, she’s incredibly intuitive. She will overcome fear like no one I’ve met when it comes to it. She didn’t really want to ride a horse – she had a bad horse-riding accident as a kid – when you’re riding fast on a horse with 200 other soldiers on horses riding behind you, through surf on a beach… that’s terrifying.” THE PREVAILING DARKNESS OF SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN , OR: EVERYBODY HURTS What Sanders believes grounds his fantasy fairytale is that all of his characters share a common tragic element — even Charlize Theron ‘s evil queen. “This queen took over a kingdom, she’s someone who’s suffered a lot of loss,” he explained. “She lost a family, she lost a tribe. She found her way into this kingdom like a Trojan horse, she moves from kingdom to kingdom hollowing them out from the inside, like a siren who attracts people to her beauty.” That sense of loss trickles down through SWATH , affecting every character’s journey. “The dwarfs lost everything; they were down in the mines, they’re noble gold miners who see light in the darkness and that’s why they were always the gold miners. When they came up from the mines the world was black and then they lost all the other people in their race. The Huntsman lost a wife. Snow White lost a kingdom, she lost both her parents and she lost the love of the people. So everyone’s dealing with loss in very different ways.”
