We’re inching ever closer to #1. With the calendar about to flip to 2013, THG is taking a look back at the year that was, specifically the stars who made it memorable via their songs, sex tapes, naked photos, arrests or – in rare cases – all of the above. Kate Upton clocked in at #6, and Justin Bieber #5. Now, following the royal selection of Kate Middleton at #4 , we present Celebrity of the Year #3… TAYLOR SWIFT ! The year will close with Swift’s “Red” atop the Billboard 200, marking the seventh time this year the album has risen to number-one. Moreover, it’s opening week sales of 1.21 million copies were the highest recorded in 10 years, with Swift becoming the only female artist to possess a pair of million-plus opening weeks over the course of her career. ” We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together ,” meanwhile, also hit the top of the charts – while symbolizing the true genius of Swift overall. She sells a mammoth number of records, and she pens personal tracks that create buzz over her personal life. Is she writing about John Mayer here? Jake Gyllenhaal there? Swift never says, but the conversation alone keeps her an integral part of the Zeitgeist. Of course, Taylor did engage in two high profile relationships as well. Everything seemed serious between her and Conor Kennedy, until the pair simply split and she quickly rebounded with Harry Styles of One Direction. They are still together. But Swift remains above the fray throughout; she is never caught in any scandal and continues to rake in the awards, winning two Grammys in 2012. There’s also this: Swift was just named the Most Charitable Celebrity of the past 12 months. Yes, it’s very good to be Taylor Swift. And with the 23-year old embarking on a new tour this March, it’s hard not to imagine her sitting once again on this same list a year from now.

When we think back on it, it’s actually pretty shocking that this guy is really 40 years old now. Long gone are the days of bleached-blonde hair, poppin vicodin, xanax, ecstasy, oxycotin, and washing it down with a bottle of vodka. This week television’s probing procedural Law & Order: SVU ripped inspiration from the headlines — or rather, the bestseller list — with a case involving the assault of the author of a Fifty Shades of Grey -style novel. (Starring My Girl ‘s Anna Chlumsky!) But what’s the takeaway here? What’s L&O:SVU really trying to say to E.L. James ? Chlumsky guest-starred as Jocelyn Paley, a successful writer whose bondage-fantasy lit phenomenon, 25 Acts , has burned its way up the charts. “Her book makes Fifty Shades look like a Disney story,” explains talk show host Adam Cain (Roger Bart), who then takes fantasies straight from Paley’s book over the rape-y line. As they do each week, the L&O:SVU crew then sets out to seek justice. But there’s a twist! (Uh, spoilers.) Paley’s not the real author of the kinky Fifty Shades stand-in, but has instead claimed credit and made a fortune off of someone else’s writing. Plagiarism: Another shade of grey! (Ok, not really.) In real life, James has tread both moral grounds. As Fifty Shades blazed a kinky trail through the suburbs and lady lit world, critics claimed its depictions of the BDSM community are off-base and promote regressive gender politics. Is protagonist Ana Steele an agent of her own sexual awakening or a pathetic young woman submitting herself to the irresistibly damaged Christian Grey ? The twisty question of authorship put on blast by L&O:SVU also has roots in James’ phenomenal success. First penned and shared online (for free!) as Twilight fan fiction — minus the supernatural stuff, but with all of the emotional desperation — Fifty Shades of Grey became a commercial property when James stopped going by her message-board friendly AKA Snowqueens Icedragon, re-named her characters to avoid copyright infringement, and turned her lusty fanfic into a book . So what’s going on here, L&O ? Does James owe more of a debt than she acknowledges to Twilight and the fan community that once welcomed her as their own? Are there repercussions to cashing in as James did without giving proper credit? Are the Law & Order writers not entirely objective in their deliciously entertaining, headline-ripping yarn-spinning ? Recall that cutting Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode inspired by Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark featuring Cynthia Nixon as a wacko drunk Julie Taymor doppelganger? Yeah, not judgmental at all. I do hope that the producers of the in-development Fifty Shades of Grey movie take note of this L&O: SVU episode and, in some way, acknowledge the meta-fictional incest loop of it all, because by the time the film spanks its way into theaters we’ll have dissected James’ novel — and the phenomenon surrounding it — every which way already. And if the big-screen adaptation is just a straight, lightly erotic retelling of Ana and Christian’s kinky courtship it’ll all seem so… vanilla . Oh, and one more thing: When will Richard Belzer record his Fifty Shades of Grey celebrity narration? She released her megahit Teenage Dream album two years ago, and it’s been a bit of blur ever since. She’s shot numerous, big-budget music videos, topped the charts, got married and divorced, toured the world, re-released her album and even managed to squeeze in filming her first-ever 3-D concert film, “Katy Perry: Part of Me.” It’s a sequence of events that would leave a lesser women exhausted. And it seems all that hustle and bustle is finally catching up with the purple-haired pop superstar. She said she’s now ready to chill out for a bit — finally. “I’m going into hiding,” she told MTV News on Tuesday night at her splashy film premiere in L.A. The lady in red added, “I want to go and write songs in the woods or something.” If it feels like you’ve been seeing a lot of Perry lately, well, that will soon change. “I’m gonna unplug, take my hair extensions out, feel my head again. I’m gonna unplug and recharge, if that makes any sense,” she said. “I’m gonna go away. I’m sure you know it’s time for me to go the f— away.” But before she does actually goes off the grid, she’ll be around a little bit longer as she promotes her July 5 movie release, which she said will show fans just how crazy her Teenage Dream era has truly been. Her film touches on not only the good, but also the bad, including her split from ex Russell Brand . “I wouldn’t say it’s so therapeutic, because the movie is so well-rounded with so many different things,” Perry said. “I guess some of it is just hopefully an inspiration for people. When they see it, they are like, ‘Oh, yeah, she goes through some sh– too. Bieber’s latest sold more than 374,000 copies in its first week, edging Madonna’s MDNA to claim the title of year’s biggest bow. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber’s Believe Photo: Most predicted it , and now it’s official: Justin Bieber ‘s Believe scored the year’s biggest chart debut, selling more than 374,000 copies and blasting the competition on the Billboard Top 200. Believe — Bieber’s fourth album to debut at #1 — slightly edged Madonna’s MDNA, which sold 359,000 copies when it was released in late March, to claim the title of year’s biggest bow, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It’s also the best first-week number any album has posted since Adele’s 21 rode a post-Grammy surge to sales of more than 729,000 copies in February. Bieber’s album also sold nearly twice the copies as its closest competition, Kenny Chesney ‘s Welcome to the Fishbowl, which opens at #2 on the chart with an impressive 193,000 copies in its first week of release. Usually that number is more than enough to take #1, but not this week. Fiona Apple ‘s first album in seven years, The Idler Wheel, debuts at #3, selling nearly 72,000 copies, followed by another returning alt icon, the Smashing Pumpkins , who sold more than 53,000 copies of their Oceania to take #4. The “Rock of Ages” soundtrack rounds out the top five, selling nearly 49,000 copies. Usher, last week’s chart champ (and Bieber’s mentor), is in at #6 with his Looking 4 Myself album, which sold 48,000 copies in its second week. Adele ‘s aforementioned 21 lands at #7 (more than 47,000 copies sold), followed by One Direction ‘s Up All Night (more than 41,000 sold) and Luke Bryan ‘s Tailgates & Tanlines (nearly 28,000 sold). Rush ‘s Clockwork Angels closes out the top 10, selling nearly 27,000 copies. Other debuts on the chart include the Dirty Heads ‘ Cabin by the Sea, which opens at #18 with sales of nearly 18,000 copies, “Once” star Glen Hansard ‘s Rhythm and Repose (#21, more than 16,000 copies sold) and the soundtrack to Pixar’s “Brave,” which bows at #33, with sales of nearly 12,000 copies. And while the story of this week’s Billboard chart is unquestionably Bieber, next week could be a different story. He’ll face challenges from both Linkin Park ‘s LIVING THINGS and Maroon 5 ‘s Overexposed, both of which could make his reign a short-lived one. Can Bieber make it two weeks in a row atop the charts?
