Exclusive: ‘Batman 3’ Cinematographer Hopes To Shoot ‘Whole Movie In IMAX’

‘I like IMAX more than I like 3-D,’ says Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan’s director of photography. By Eric Ditzian Christian Bale as Batman in “The Dark Knight” Photo: Warner Bros. Early on in the “Inception” preproduction process, director Christopher Nolan and director of photography Wally Pfister had a conversation that dragged on for weeks: After shooting a portion of “The Dark Knight” in IMAX, would they also shoot their Leonardo DiCaprio-starring thriller in the large-scale film format? “Finally I had to tell Chris that the way he was describing the film, so much of it wanted to be with a handheld camera and kind of running around,” Pfister told MTV News. “That’s just not physically possible with the IMAX camera. We ruled out shooting in IMAX.” Their thinking on how to shoot “Batman 3,” however, might turn out to be vastly different. “I can’t say until I read the script, but it would certainly be my preferred, amazing goal to shoot the whole movie in IMAX,” Pfister said. That sentiment jibes with rumors from last summer that suggested the next “Batman” could indeed be shot all in IMAX . At this point, though, Pfister is waiting to get his hands on the script and to find out when the threequel will shift into production. When it does, he’s hoping to work with IMAX cameras and hoping to avoid 3-D ones. “I must say I’m a huge IMAX fan. I like IMAX more than I like 3-D,” he explained. “Chris’ films are so densely layered and have so much going on visually in every way that IMAX helps enhance that because of the scope and the scale of it — it becomes a much larger canvas to paint on. That’s what we found on ‘Dark Knight.’ “I’m not a big fan of 3-D,” he continued. “I liken it to my View-Master I had 40 years ago. Are you really getting more out of the story with 3-D? When you separate those different planes and you’re creating artificial depth, it looks phony to me.” Nolan hasn’t jumped on the 3-D bandwagon either, saying in June, “I’m not a huge fan of 3-D.” Still, any decisions about how to shoot “Batman 3” will ultimately involve Warner Bros. and will certainly wait until Nolan and Pfister sit down and have a discussion similar to the one they had in the run-up to “Inception.” “We usually have lunch and he asks me, ‘Tell me what your thoughts are,’ ” Pfister said. “It’s very casual. It’s not very technical. And then we start to build toward, ‘How are we going to shoot this? Where are we going to shoot this?’ My preproduction is about four months long before principal photography begins. “I can’t imagine how we’re going to step it up [after ‘Inception’],” he added. “But we will.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Ranking the Inevitable Christian Bale/Mel Gibson Rant Mash-Ups

It was only a matter of time before some enterprising* individuals got some Christian Bale in their Mel Gibson — one big supercollider of alpha-male angst, venom and decibels headed for the ultimate explosion. YouTube Nation has wrought at least six to date, with surely more to come; Movieline, meanwhile, has gathered and judged them like the trailblazing (if predictable) pop artifacts they are. Your mileage may vary; tell me if so. Need I say they’re all NSFW ?

Taylor Lautner Would Ditch His Abs For The Right Role

‘If it was for a role that I was passionate about, I would definitely do that,’ says ‘Eclipse’ star. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner at the “Eclipse” screening in New York on Monday Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage Would Taylor Lautner ever drastically alter his body for a performance? It’s not an unreasonable question — after all, people like Christian Bale and even Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson have been known to drop extreme amounts of weight in the name of their acting careers. As the young “Eclipse” actor’s star continues to rise, it’s certainly a question that he’ll want to ponder as more and more acting opportunities float across his table. Speaking with MTV News at a special screening of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” in New York City on Monday, Lautner said that he would absolutely consider ditching his signature muscular physique — if the right film role came his way, that is. “If it was for a role that I was passionate about, I would definitely do that,” he told MTV. Although body alterations aren’t necessarily high on the list of changes Lautner is looking to make in the name of his career, the sometimes-werewolf heartthrob did say that he’s looking to branch out into new genres. He already has a head start on that mission with upcoming leading turns in espionage thriller “Abduction” and superhero flick “Stretch Armstrong,” but Lautner is hoping for even more diverse opportunities. “I want to challenge myself to everything,” he said. “I’ve got a really cool action thriller [in ‘Abduction’] and then an awesome superhero movie [in ‘Stretch Armstrong’], but I want to find a great drama script.” The one genre he’s not itching to dive into? Musicals. “No,” he laughed when asked about the possibility of singing on the big screen. “I mean, people actually tell me that I can [sing], but I think they’re just being nice — because I definitely can’t! No ‘Hairspray 2’ [for me]!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Farting Man-Boy, Elaborate Serial Killer and Bono Among New Oscar Voters

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — a group so white, old and out-of-touch you’d think you’re at a Republican convention — has decided perhaps more people would watch their dog and pony show if their choices were a little more hip. In an effort to pump fresh plasma into their dusty veins, the AMPAS has inducted a whole slew of new Academy members. Among the rarefied few are Adam Sandler, Christoph Waltz, Tobin Bell of Saw infamy, along with some much needed non-white, non-male voices like Mo’Nique, Zoe Saldana and Gabourey Sidibe. On the other side of the camera, noted-Miley Cyrus despoiler Adam Shankman is on the list, as are Bono and The Edge, and Christian Bale’s favorite cinematographer , Shane “f*cking distracting!” Hurlbut. Check out the full 135-person list after the jump.

Gidget is Your Newest Reboot

Gidget . It’s a brand with next to no name recognition for its target audience of teenage girls, and yet, it’s the next franchise to get a big ol’ Hollywood reboot. 300 producer Mark Canton is planning a TV and movie makeover for the Malibu surf bunny heroine, though when I read excited statements from executives and producers who talk about “reviving Gidget,” all I can think is “too soon.” [ Variety ]

Bret Easton Ellis on American Psycho, Christian Bale, and His Problem with Women Directors

Bret Easton Ellis has written six books, and all six have been optioned by Hollywood. Of those six, four were made into movies, and they run the gamut from iconic to underseen, acclaimed to lambasted. Each day this week, Ellis will tackle a different adaptation of his books for Movieline, giving his take on what worked, what didn’t, and what went on behind the scenes. American Psycho is by far the most controversial work that Bret Easton Ellis has written, and yet when it comes to the adaptations of his novels, Mary Harron’s 2000 film is the most critically acclaimed and well-regarded. It went through a bumpy production process that attracted directors like Oliver Stone and David Cronenberg and actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp, but the final result eventually became a calling card for both Harron and its star, Christian Bale, and it’s only grown in public esteem since its release.
