Fancy restaurants and Olympic-size swim pools: what the media won’t report about Gaza

http://www.tomgrossmedia.com/mideastdispatches/archives/001114.html THE LIES THE MEDIA AND NGOS TELL ABOUT GAZA * While prominent Western media continue to lead their viewers and readers astray with accounts of a non-existent “mass humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza, fancy restaurants (video below) and an Olympic-size swimming pool open there * Most Israeli towns don’t have Olympic-size swimming pools * Many Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza live a middle class (and in some cases an upper class) lifestyle that Western journalists refuse to report on because it doesn’t fit with the simplistic story they were sent to write * If you drop into the Roots Club in Gaza, according to the Lonely Planet guidebook, you can “dine on steak au poivre and chicken cordon bleu” http://www.rootsclub.ps/index.php In recent days, the international media, particularly in Europe and the Mideast, has been full of stories about “activist boats sailing to Gaza carrying desperately-needed humanitarian aid and building materials.” The BBC World Service even led its world news broadcasts with this story at one point over the weekend. (The BBC yesterday boasted that its global news audience has now risen to 220 million persons a week, making it by far the biggest news broadcaster in the world.) Yet the BBC and other media fail to report on the fancy new restaurants and swimming pools of Gaza, or about the wind surfing competitions on Gaza beaches, or the Strip’s crowded shops and markets. No, this would spoil their agenda. Playing the manipulative game of the BBC is easy. If we had their vast taxpayer funded resources, we too could produce reports about parts of London, Manchester and Glasgow and make it look as though there is a humanitarian catastrophe throughout the UK. We could produce the same effect by selectively filming seedy parts of Paris and Rome and New York and Los Angeles too. Of course there is poverty in Gaza. There is poverty in parts of Israel too. (When was the last time a foreign journalist based in Israel left the pampered lounge bars and restaurants of the King David and American Colony hotels in Jerusalem and went to check out the slum-like areas of southern Tel Aviv? Or the hard-hit Negev towns of Netivot or Rahat?) But the way the BBC and other prominent Western news media are deliberately misleading global audiences and systematically creating the false impression that people are somehow starving in Gaza, and that it is all Israel’s fault, can only serve to increase hatred for the Jewish state – which one suspects was the goal of many of the editors and reporters involved in the first place. STEAK AU POIVRE AND CHICKEN CORDON BLEU If you drop by the Roots Club in Gaza, according to the Lonely Planet guidebook for Gaza and the West Bank, you can “dine on steak au poivre and chicken cordon bleu”. The restaurant’s website in Arabic gives a window into middle class dining and the lifestyle of Hamas officials in Gaza. And here it is in English, for all the journalists, UN types and NGO staff who regularly frequent this and other nice Gaza restaurants (but don’t tell their readers about them). Please take a look at the pictures on the above website. They are not the kind of things you see in The New York Times or CNN or in Newsweek, whose international edition last week had one of the most disgracefully misleading stories about Gaza I have ever seen, portraying it in terms which were virtually reminiscent of Hiroshima after a nuclear blast. added by: crystalman

Man Wrongfully Imprisoned for Decades Happy to Start Relearning Life

Man wrongfully imprisoned for decades happy to start relearning life By Rich Phillips, CNN May 24, 2010 8:43 p.m. EDT Tampa, Florida (CNN) — Meeting 54-year-old James Bain, the one thing that stands out is that the smile never seems to leave his face. He appears happy and positive, and the bitterness that might be buried inside a man who was wrongly sent to prison for 35 years is nowhere to be found. “I kind of see myself as a man of God and being like Joseph,” he said. “In a sense, I feel like a bear, coming out of hibernation. Like, they come out to eat, mine would be coming out to enjoy what I have missed.” Bain has missed a lot. His life was returned to him and his family in December, when a Florida judge freed him after DNA testing proved he did not kidnap and rape a 9-year-old boy in 1974 in Lake Wales, Florida. With the help of the Innocence Project, a national public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA tests, Bain left a Florida courtroom and entered a world he had left a lifetime ago. He is now on the outside, in a world that has changed technologically and socially, and one in which he must now learn how to live — again. “I've been planning on going back to school, and getting ready to take my driving test again, and hoping to get a motorcycle license,” Bain said. In the backyard of his mother's home in Tampa, Florida, Bain said that he'd like to tour the country on his motorcycle. CNN spoke with him amidst grapefruit and orange trees that weren't even planted when he went to prison so many years ago. “You spend 35 years in prison, and just the little things, like a grapefruit tree or an orange tree … those had vanished for me,” he said. “I never thought I'd get a chance to see another one of these.” The past six months have been a whirlwind, and Bain has become a celebrity. He was brought to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the Martin Luther King Jr. Association for Nonviolence to ring the Liberty Bell on Martin Luther King day. When it was revealed that his favorite movie was “Titanic,” the owners of the Orlando, Florida, exhibit “Titanic — the Experience” invited him and his family to spend the day at the site, where characters from the movie tell the story of the sunken vessel. Noting the movie symbolized hope and strength for him while in prison, Bain said the film sends chills through his body. “To me, it means love and care for what you feel about other persons, like my sisters and mother. I think about that key word from 'Titanic,' 'Don't ever let go,' ” Bain said. Bain was invited to Orlando by Lowell Lytle, the man who portrays the Titanic's captain, Edward Smith. Lytle was touched by the torment James experienced while wrongly imprisoned. “It just hit me how horrible that must have been. That man's youth was taken away from him,” Lytle said. “I thought, I need to do something to help this man. If I can bring a smile to his face … to be able to take him through this exhibit here, and take him through an experience he will remember forever, that was fun for me.” During the past six months, Bain also has spoken to church groups and organizations. “I try to show whoever I'm speaking to about choices. That's my key word. Choice. Only you can make it because you have to live with it,” he said. “My choice was snatched. … It was taken from me. They didn't leave me no alternative. It's like the old saying, the right place at the wrong time.” But Bain insists that he's not bitter. He said he believes he's returned to a better society — a better country than the one he left in 1974. He points to the fact that an African-American was elected president. “I saw a big difference when the president changed, which I never dreamed would happen,” he said. “To see that change, that goes to show me, now, that there's a lot of good that we've done in this country.” Bain has been living with his mother in Tampa. He's been paid to speak in a couple of places, money that will help tide him over until his big payday. He and his attorneys have filed with the state of Florida for the restitution that Bain is entitled to — $50,000 for every year he spent behind bars, for a total of $1.75 million. That's a lot of money to most of us, but not nearly enough to make up for 35 years, Bain said. “Not even if they gave me $100 million,” he said. “Even if they gave me that, it still wouldn't replace what I lost.” He said it's the money that's keeping him on his guard — and is one reason why he doesn't yet have a girlfriend. “I just don't want no woman to want me for my money, to be honest with you,” he said. “… You don't know what they have planned.” added by: EthicalVegan

Eliot Spitzer to Replace Campbell Brown?

The candlelight vigils for CNN’ s kamikaze anchoress Campbell Brown are over, and so it’s time to get down to the business of replacing her at 8 p.m. And if we’re continuing in her spirit of candor, then this is as good an idea as any: Erstwhile NY governor, escort connoisseur and “budding pundit” Eliot Spitzer. “He’s a smart guy, extremely smart. And he communicates well,” an anonymous cable news executive told the NYT . “The question about him is, how much stench is on him, and is he likable enough?” Those are two questions, of course, the answers to which are not much and not really, which of course means he’s a perfect fit on CNN, right? On Way Out the Door, At Least Campbell Brown is Honest

Rather than wait for CNN to drop the ax on her and her 8 p.m. broadcast, Campbell Brown fell on her sword Tuesday. The news show host announced she’d be leaving the network because, in her words, “not enough people want to watch my program, and I owe it to myself and to CNN to get out of the way so that CNN can try something else.” No bias, no bull, indeed!

Edward Norton Uses Social Networking To ‘Do Something’ With Crowdrise

Edward Norton Hopes To ‘Do Something’ With Crowdrise By Kara Warner Edward Norton Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ Getty Images Edward Norton isn’t cut from the typical Hollywood actor cloth. The often stoic, socially conscious actor has used his celebrity for good for years. This week Norton launched yet another charitable-minded effort, Crowdrise, which brings the “power of crowd-sourcing and the fun of social networking to fundraising and volunteerism.” Following the success of his Maasai Marathon fundraising website for last year’s New York City Marathon, Norton and his partners, online retailers/ tech experts Robert and Jeffrey Wolfe, were approached by a variety of individuals and organizations asking for help in creating online campaigns. “We found ourselves talking and saying we could just build this out to a really user-friendly, open-source site and just share it [with everyone],” he told MTV News. “We could basically take the work we did and engineer a website where anybody can kind of plug in their own identity, their own cause and do this themselves. And we got kind of excited about that idea because we just thought even more than raising money ourselves, wouldn’t it be awesome if we made it really, really easy for other people?” Norton confessed that before the Marathon campaign he’d stayed away from Facebook and Twitter, but that afterward he saw the potential of using social networking for good. “It was the first I got a taste of the fact that the idea that you could maybe actually use that stuff for some substantive things, not just for social chatter,” he said. “And the marathon campaign was like a confirmation of that to me. So in a way Crowdrise was our attempt to make a social networking that is motivating people to act and actually do something, but with all the fun of social networking. So I think it’s pretty hip; it’s pretty fun.” Speaking of social networking, Norton is a relatively new Twitter user but follows an eclectic mix of people — Tony Robbins and Sasha Grey, for example. “I’ve never even met Tony,” Norton admitted of that particular connection. “But we have a mutual friend and when I was doing the Boston marathon campaign my friend said, ‘You know, Tony would really like this and probably twitter about it and he has, like, a million and a half followers.’ So I e-mailed him and he was really really generous about it. … Sasha, let’s see, my friends, the guys who wrote ‘Rounders’ wrote ‘The Girlfriend Experience.’ And so when I did the Boston marathon they said, ‘Hey, you know, we know Sasha and she’s got followers on her thing,’ and so same thing [as with Robbins].” Not that he wants to get crazy with pulling in more followers, but Norton said he’d like to fill his ranks on Twitter like Justin Bieber, CNN, and other popular accounts. “I can only dream of having Ashton Kutcher’s millions of followers. Or who else, Puffy &#8212l Puffy’s got a lot. Russell Simmons has got a lot.” Norton also made sure to point out to the “MTV crowd” that he and his Crowdrise team have made their website easy to use, with a little fun built in. “If you go to the homepage … the second paragraph there, it says, ‘You can go here to see how Crowdrise works,’ and then, you see it says, ‘Go here if you want to see an even more beautiful picture of a napkin.’ Awesome, right? Do you know that — this is totally not me making a joke — we’ve gotten thousands of pictures of napkins sent in to us. You have no idea how many people have sent us their pictures of a napkin.” The Academy Award-nominated actor has also recruited a slew of other famous faces to get involved by putting up their own pages on the site: Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell and Will Ferrell. “I think this site is the most fun that you can have making a difference without, you know, taking illegal substances,” Norton said. That, and the slogan on the homepage reads: “If you don’t give back no one will like you.” What do you think of Edward Norton’s Crowdrise idea? Let us know in the comments below!
