Jonas Brothers’ Secret Boy-Band Weapon: Instruments

‘It’s a rare thing for a boy band. … I don’t know of a whole lot of boy bands that do that,’ Nick Jonas tells MTV News. By John Mitchell Nick and Joe Jonas Photo: Todd Williamson/ WireImage The Jonas Brothers rode easily into the second round of our Battle of the Boy Bands , demolishing Menudo by taking 80 percent of the vote. But they are facing stiff competition from another group of three real-life brothers in round two: Hanson. With the JoBros back in the studio working on a comeback album, and with each brother (Joe, Nick and Kevin) pursuing his own solo effort, they remain one of the most active bands in the competition. So why vote Jonas? Read on. Strongest Chart Achievement Well, it certainly doesn’t get much better than having the #1 album in the country, and the Jo Bros have had two: 2008’s A Little Bit Longer and 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times. Longer is the real jewel in the Brothers’ crown, though, shifting an impressive 525,402 copies in its debut frame. On the strength of the hit single “Burnin’ Up,” the album held on to the #1 spot in its second week of release and continued to sell briskly on its way to going double platinum in the U.S. A Little Bit Longer remains the band’s best-selling album and even earned a spot on Rolling Stone ‘s list of the best albums of 2008. Standout Video Since they didn’t make much of an impression on mainstream audiences with their debut (see below), the brothers started anew when they joined Hollywood Records and amped up their pop sound for their self-titled sophomore album. The album’s first single, “Year 3000,” brought them plenty of mainstream attention, but its second single, “S.O.S.,” kicked things up even further. The song became the group’s first top 20 hit, buoyed by its video, which was filmed on the RMS Queen Mary superliner in the summer of 2007. With well over 93 million views, the “S.O.S.” video is easily the band’s most-viewed clip. Defining Tune For its sheer crossover appeal, it’s gotta be “Burnin’ Up.” The song is the JoBros biggest hit by far, debuting to strong enough digital sales to spur a #5 opening on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it their highest charting song to date. This single was a sales smash, moving more than 2 million digital downloads to become the band’s second platinum-selling song after “S.O.S.,” and it became a bona fide radio hit over the summer of 2008. As much as we love our boy bands, they aren’t often embraced by critics. However, this song, like its mothership album A Little Bit Longer, was. The acclaim Longer and “Burnin’ Up” earned helped the JoBros along to their lone Grammy nomination (for Best New Artist) in 2009. Debut Album The Jonas Brothers’ first album as a group — Nick released a solo album before he, Joe and Kevin united to create the band — was 2006’s It’s About Time. The record was pretty low-profile (to say the least), though it managed to make an impression in the Christian market and sell 62,000 copies in the U.S. The lack of interest the album generated for the band led to them being dropped from Columbia Records, though they were snapped up by Hollywood Records almost immediately. While it didn’t generate much heat for the boys in 2006, the album has become something of a collector’s item for fans in the years since, and because it is currently out of print, copies are rare and expensive on online auction sites like eBay. Biggest Competition The Jonas Brothers are currently embroiled in a tough showdown with Hanson, another brotherly threesome with an affinity for playing guitars and penning their own tunes (both boy-band rarities). Hanson is decidedly ’90s and the Bros are very of the aughts, meaning its unlikely they share a fanbase, but Hanson has one thing going for them that the JoBros don’t: nostalgia. People have a way of romanticizing their fond recollections of the recent past, so the Jonases have a real battle here. When we asked Nick Jonas why fans should vote for his group above all other boy bands in our bracket, he went straight for the very thing that sets the Jonas Brothers and their main competition, Hanson, apart. “I think that we are a good one to vote for because we play our own instruments,” Nick said. “It’s a rare thing for a boy band. … I don’t know of a whole lot of boy bands that do that.” Is that good enough to keep them in the competition? Only time will tell. Voting in round two of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Boyz II Men: The ‘Battle Of The Boy Bands’ Forefathers

By John Mitchell, with reporting by Jocelyn Vena Boyz II Men Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images Our Battle of the Boy Bands got off to a roaring start Monday as fans of new groups like the Wanted and One Direction and legacy acts like ‘NSYNC and New Kids on the Block hit our bracket hard to push their favorites on to the next round. One group that is in it to win it is Boyz II Men , who told MTV News they were among the “progenitors” of the entire boy-band genre. “We were kind of like the progenitors, the torch holders of a lot of the artists, of a lot of the boy bands that came about,” Nathan Morris told us. That’s not hyperbole, either — three of the top-10 longest-running #1 singles in the history of the Billboard chart belong to the band. Their top song, though, is actually a duet, and with 16 weeks spent atop the chart, it’s also the biggest single ever: “One Sweet Day” with Mariah Carey. Boyz II Men are one of just four artists or groups to have held the #1 spot for at least 50 weeks cumulatively. On the all-time list, they fall at #4, behind only (ahem!) Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Carey. (With 47 weeks, Usher falls just short at #5.) Clearly, the band has quite a few chart achievements under its belt. ‘American Idol’ Cast-Off Colton Dixon Took A ‘Risk’

‘I chose that song and I ran with it and I think I did me and I loved it,’ singer says of song choice that got him axed. By Kelly Marino Colton Dixon Photo: MTV News After a record 53 million votes were cast, America has allowed Elise Testone to continue on with her “vacation” in the bottom three on “American Idol” Thursday night as Colton Dixon — a potential favorite — was voted off. And while this may come as the second-most surprising elimination of the season, the Tennessean, who found himself in unfamiliar territory with the fewest votes, acknowledged he only had himself to blame. “It’s all good,” Dixon told MTV News backstage after the show. “There is always going to be peaks and valleys, but [Wednesday] night, I should have chosen a different song to begin with. And I know that. I knew I was going to be in the bottom three because of that. I was hoping I wasn’t going to leave, but stuff happens.” The Mohawked metal rocker was rolling through the competition after receiving praise for his versatility and unique twists on perfect song choices. But Wednesday night he fell flat when he chose to start off with Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” which turned out to be more of a “Bad Rendition.” Even Jimmy Iovine was confused, calling his performance somewhere between “1985 Billy Idol on MTV ‘TRL’ to ‘Spider-Man’ on Broadway” — and we kind of agreed . As the night went on, Colton failed to redeem himself when he took to the stage a second time to perform Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September.” Crouched over his piano, the skinny, tight-jeans-wearing contestant took a more somber approach to one of the grooviest tunes in soul music. However, despite any further confusion caused by the arrangement, he still stands by his motto: Stay true and take chances. “I loved ‘September.’ ” Dixon explained. “It’s been one of my favorites that I’ve done on the show, just because it was so different than the original. A lot of people don’t like change, or so much change, you know, and I definitely changed that song and I understand the feeling that the original gave off. But um, that wasn’t me and that wasn’t my style. I chose that song and I ran with it and I think I did me and I loved it. So in some cases, there is a balance, but if you’re feeling something, you need to run with it no matter what they are going to say. It’s a risk every week. So you have to be willing to take that risk, and I did.” The risk may have caused him the competition, but the 20-year-old said he’s glad he got to have one last moment to himself when it came to performing his swan song, Lifehouse’s “Everything.” “I wanted to end tonight the way I started it,” Colton said. “I felt like I strayed last night, and I hate that I did but I was ready to bring it back and bring my focus back. I wasn’t singing for the judges. I wasn’t singing for my family or anyone in the audience. I wasn’t singing for anyone at all. I was singing for my Lord, the savior Jesus Christ. And we had a good time on that stage so I’m so glad I got to do that song.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘Rock Of Ages’ Spotlights A Tom Cruise You’ve Never Seen

‘He’s a guy who loves challenges,’ enthuses director Adam Shankman, as part of MTV News’ Summer Movie Preview Week. By Amy Wilkinson Tom Cruise in “Rock of Ages” Photo: Warner Bros This summer, the city — and the cinema — will be built on rock and roll when ” Rock of Ages ” packs its ax, journeying from Broadway to a theater near you. Set in Los Angeles and featuring the biggest jams of the ’80s, the movie musical follows busboy/ aspiring rocker Drew Boley (played by Diego Boneta ) as he falls for new-in-town Sherrie Christian (played by Julianne Hough ) and lands a gig opening for rock legend Stacee Jaxx ( Tom Cruise ). All the while, greater forces are at work trying to convert the drug- and sex-fueled Sunset Strip into a safer, gentler piece of prime real estate, much to the chagrin of the bandannaed masses. In anticipation of opening night (June 15), MTV News caught up with director Adam Shankman (“Hairspray”) to chat about Tom Cruise’s crazy work ethic, ’80s nostalgia and the perils of working with a baboon. MTV News : Movie musicals are nothing new for you. What is it about translating a work from stage to screen that is so compelling? Adam Shankman : It’s a matter of, I guess, finding a story you enjoy telling and a medium you enjoy. I grew up doing musical theater, so it’s something that’s in my bones, and I love it. I feel it’s always informed a lot of the way I think and the way I approach material. It’s just sort of a natural thing for me to be doing, given my history with music and dance and all that. All I ever wanted to be in my life was a chorus boy, so how things turned out couldn’t be a bigger surprise to me. MTV : What was it specifically about “Rock of Ages” that drew you in? Shankman : I thought, “Holy moly!” Here’s an opportunity to make a musical truly for straight men. I mean, straight guys walk into the theater and they know every word of the music. So it’s a completely different experience from girls having to drag their boyfriends to boys dragging their girlfriends. MTV : There’s been a lot of ’80s nostalgia in pop culture lately. Is that an era you’re particularly nostalgic for? Shankman : I mean, that was my time. I graduated high school in ’82. My dad’s office was on Sunset. I saw my first concert at the Roxy. I was choreographing music videos in ’87 when, it happens, I actually choreographed a video for someone whose music is in the movie. It was, you know, the last time I remember everything being kind of innocent. Everything kind of shifted then, suddenly fun became drug addiction and crazy, casual sex became AIDS. It was the end of all of that. MTV : Diego Boneta, who plays Drew, is a fairly under-the-radar talent right now. How did he land the role? Shankman : His audition just sort of stopped me in my tracks. I saw it on my casting website. I’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of guys on there, and his stopped me because there was no acting — he just was that guy. And he also sang so great. In the best casting moments, you’re looking at somebody and saying, “How much do I have to do with this person to get them there?” I just looked at him and he just dropped into it very easily and naturally. And then, of course, there’s that face. MTV : One of the film’s many familiar faces is Tom Cruise, though I have a feeling this is a Tom Cruise we’ve never seen before. Shankman : We have definitely never seen him do this before. A lot of the joy in this for him was just the adventure of trying something that was so foreign. I think part of the reason that he said yes to doing it was that he was so stunned that he was asked, and he thought, “Oh my god, of all the millions of things I’ve done in my career, nothing has ever been like this.” He’s a guy who loves challenges. MTV : We did see him sing in “Top Gun.” Shankman : Not like this. MTV : For fans of the original, how closely does the film hem to the Broadway musical? Shankman : It’s pretty close. I mean, I changed who the villains are. They were Europeans in the play, and I wanted them to be more L.A.-based so it had more of a local resonance. The character Lonnie, the Russell Brand character, isn’t the narrator. I didn’t think the movie should have a narrator. But in terms of spirit, the boy-meets-girl and what happens to the boy and girl is very close. MTV : Is there a favorite musical number for you? Shankman : I never cease to be in awe of “Pour Some Sugar on Me” because it was Tom on his first day of shooting, and he spent the day performing it for a giant crowd, and Def Leppard showed up on set and were there. That was an incredibly crazy, magical day. MTV : Conversely, there’s always a scene or two that give a director pause. Any particularly difficult moments for you on the set? Shankman : Well, I have one of those that turned into one of the best scenes in the movie. There’s a giant protest outside of the Bourbon, where Catherine Zeta-Jones and all the anti-Bourbon moms and all the rockers are fighting and they do a mash-up of “We Built This City” and “We’re Not Going to Take It.” Then, you know, we had the baboon there and the baboon got loose, and it was a nightmare and nobody could move because it was going to eat your face off. And then we were standing there for 20 minutes stuck on the street. Bizarre, bizarre day. On top of which, it was just really daunting because there was a lot going on. We had Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson and all these rockers there from that period. It was insane. ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Gives Gavin DeGraw The Boot

Pop singer had to participate in a dance-off with Jaleel White before getting the bad news. By Kelley L. Carter Karina Smirnoff and Gavin DeGraw on “Dancing With the Stars” Photo: ABC The savvy producers at ABC’s hit reality dance competition switched things up for fans during Tuesday night’s “Dancing With the Stars” elimination show. Instead of making fans sweat it out until the final minute to find out which celebrity dancer and his/her professional partner would be given the boot based on a combination of judges’ scores and fan votes, they turned the tables a bit. The bottom two couples — pop singer Gavin DeGraw and his partner Karina Smirnoff and childhood actor Jaleel White and his partner Kym Johnson — had to duke it out on the dance floor. The couples danced side by side in a duel of cha-chas, with the judges having the final say about who would be saved and who would be going home. In the end, it really wasn’t much of a shocker. DeGraw was told he’d danced his last dance on the show — he’d been the bottom scorer on Monday night, as was pretty much the case since the competition began. Monday night’s theme was Latin night, and his samba failed to impress the judges. That said, the judges told DeGraw that they based their decision solely on the dance he turned in Tuesday night, however, and not what he’d done in previous performances. “It’s been amazing to be part of the show,” DeGraw said after learning that he’d be going home, adding that Smirnoff was a great mentor. Next week, the celebrities take on Motown week.

‘The Voice’: Surprise Exits And A Maroon 5 Debut

Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton hit the stage with their teams, while Maroon 5 premiered ‘Payfone’ with Wiz Khalifa. By John Mitchell Jesse Campbell on “The Voice” Photo: NBC Things were shaken up Monday night (April 16) on “The Voice” with the surprise introduction of “instant eliminations,” a new rule forcing each judge to send one of their team members home at the end of the episode. The first judges forced to send one of their own packing were Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton , whose teams took the stage Monday. An additional member of each team will be voted off by the public on Tuesday. Each of the superstar judges — with the notable exception of Cee Lo Green — also hit the stage to perform, with Levine’s band Maroon 5 even debuting a new song with Wiz Khalifa . First to hit the stage was teenage country girl RaeLynn. Before performing, she and her coach Blake bonded over being “real country.” I’m a real country artist,” RaeLynn boasted, and Blake suited her up with the perfect song, hitmaker Jason Aldean’s “She’s Country.” RaeLynn’s performance of the song won over all the judges. “Man, I’m gonna say, you make me want to sing country,” Christina championed. But Blake had the biggest words of praise. “This is the most proud moment I’ve had of any person on my team,” Blake said of RaeLynn’s performance. Next up was fan and judge favorite Jesse Campbell, who delivered an expectedly excellent rendition of Beyonc

Christina Aguilera Crushes Tony Lucca on The Voice

“Mickey Mouse Club” connections only get you so far apparently. Last night on The Voice , Christina Aguilera offered some less-than-glowing words for the falsetto-singing Tony Lucca, one of Adam Levine’s proteges. After a rendition of “In Your Eyes,” Christina called him “one-dimensional,” said she thinks there are better voices on the show, and hopes The Voice doesn’t become about “celebrity sway” that keeps fan favorites like Tony in the competition. Adam’s response: “Wow. That was honest.” The Voice: Christina Aguilera Shreds Tony Lucca Popular with fans and celebrities alike, Lucca got the support of Justin Timberlake, a MMC alum along with Aguilera and Britney Spears , on Twitter Monday. Will he survive? He’ll have to be one of the top three vote-getters among Adam Levine’s six team members – or get Levine to save him with the fourth spot. Think it’ll happen? Tune in tonight to find out.
