TBS Starts Own Emmy Campaign for Conan O’Brien’s NBC Tonight Show

Hoping August’s Emmy Awards are a bit more awkward than usual this year? So is TBS. In an act that can only be described as full-on taunting, the network has taken out a series of “For Your Consideration” ads for The Tonight Show with Conan O’B rien with the hopes of landing O’B rien an Emmy nomination and placement on the NBC telecast. “Conan’s great work in 2009 and 2010 deserves Emmy consideration. We’re very excited to have him join TBS later this year,” said Turner Entertainment Networks president Steve Koonin, presumably with a massive, sh*t-eating grin. The ads make no mention of NBC — or Jay Leno — but they do make jokes about Coco’s skin and Twitter following. So there’s that. Take a look after the jump.

Is Conan O’Brien Still Worth NBC Ad Rates on TBS?

In April, TBS lured Conan O’B rien over to its cable channel with a compensation package worth of a broadcast network star: an estimated yearly salary of $10 million, an 11pm time slot, and ownership of his show. It’s an expensive gamble, but TBS plans to milk its Coco commodity for all it’s worth — and when it comes to the amount they’re charging advertisers, they may have gone overboard.

Conan O’Brien vs. Stephen Colbert vs. Jon Stewart: It’s a Dance-Off!

In November, Conan O’Brien will return to late night with a talk show on TBS. For now, though, he’s continuing to go across the country with his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour. It stopped in Radio City Music Hall last night, and audience members were treated to the funniest dance-off since Step Up 2: The Streets . Who did O’Brien go up against? The Comedy Central duo of Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. When all was said and done, one man lay dying on the floor, while another asked for his time slot… Comedian Dance-Off

Kevin Eubanks Bids Farewell to The Tonight Show

You didn’t see this on Friday night because you stopped paying attention to Jay Leno a long time ago, but Kevin Eubanks ended his stint as bandleader on The Tonight Show after 18 years — and yes, apparently NBC is folding the five-month sojourn to The Jay Leno Show into Tonight Show history. Who knew?! Anyway, as Leno is prone to do, his goodbye speech to Eubanks was filled with faux-sincerity, but you do get the feeling that Jay will really miss him. If only because it’s doubtful that replacement, American Idol band leader Rickey Minor, will be a ready-made laugh track and comedy foil. After the jump, watch the tribute video The Tonight Show put together for Eubanks, which — surprise! — is actually kinda funny. Well, for Jay Leno.

Emmy Awards Prepare For Final Jay vs. Conan Tonight Show Cage Match

It seemed like the dust had finally settled around NBC’ s 11:35 P.M. time slot. Conan had been escorted off the Warner Bros. premises to circulate the continent on a comedy tour that turned out to be just as therapeutic for its host as for its audience members and Jay Leno resumed his Tonight Show perch as if nothing weird or backstabby ever happened. So by the time that Conan announced that he was abandoning network late night for TBS , it seemed like the two would never go head-to-head again… until we heard about this year’s Emmy ballots.

NBC Accuses Conan of Lying to 60 Minutes, Inadvertently Paints Themselves as Heartless

Last Sunday, Conan O’B rien used his first contractually-permitted television interview in months to relive his traumatic Tonight Show shakedown. Scarred, Coco did his best to not badmouth NBC or Jay Leno outright, instead using phrases like “I would not have done that if positions were reversed.” In fact, the comedian only really lobbed two accusations NBC’ s way, allowing the rest of his heartbreak to go unspoken — er, spoken by his wife Liza. Unsatisfied, NBC sources placed an anonymous call this morning to clear up a few lingering issues.

It’s Time for Conan to Move On [Late Night Wars]

Conan O’Brien on 60 Minutes: What Becomes of the Broken Hearted

What’s another 37 minutes between friends? That’s how long into the broadcast 60 Minutes waited to air Steve Kroft’s interview with Conan O’B rien, the first time the former Tonight Show host appeared on television since February 20th. And while most of the juicy details had already been previewed — as it turns out, Conan would have handled this entire situation a bit differently than Jay Leno — the interview still held some surprises. Namely, how the Great Late Night War of 2010 left the nominally unwavering Coco fairly damaged.
